MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

A

s is the case with many of the important figures in US History, I was born in Doniphan, Missouri, okay so that might be a stretch to say many. My childhood was spent in Piggott and Berryville, Arkansas, and attended college at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro until I joined the Naval Reserve. After training, I moved to Little Rock, and in 1989 made my way to St. Louis; however didn’t find St Charles County until 1992. My wife Jennifer is a Maryland Heights native, and in a moment of weakness agreed to marry me. Twenty two years later we have three wonderful children and I’m still alive, which I count as a sign that I have been a successful husband. Our oldest son will be heading to Lindenwood University this fall to major in communications, while my next son begins his Junior Year at Fort Zumwalt West, and my daughter finishes her career at Twin Chimneys elementary. With the exception of the time I spent at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, being trained as a Navy Corpsman, the past thirty years have been working in the communications industry. For the first ten years, I was an on-air personality in various radio formats from Country to Urban to Rock. The next ten years were spent as a creative services director for two radio groups with multiple stations. These latest ten years have been in the world of media sales with the last four plus with Charter Media. This long and varied career has

given me a unique view of the changing marketing landscapes, and today I have the opportunity to work with a client base of small and regional businesses in creating campaigns that help grow their customer base and their bottom lines. My curious nature has served me well to dig into the problem areas of a clients business, which you need to fully understand before you can craft a plan that addresses the challenges, and gives a clear path to achieve your goals. Few things give you a more satisfied feeling then helping a client confront a problem and see the solution you craft together bring the success their business desires. Along with my marketing position, I also enjoy an active voice-over career with many local and a few national clients. It feeds my fire from my first days in radio and allows another outlet for creativity which I love. So whether its Bandana’s BBQ, UMSL, Pundmann Ford, or others, there is a good chance you hear my voice everyday on St Louis Radio or TV. In April of this year, I was appointed to the St Charles County Council representing District 3, and began my career in politics. It has been a great education in how our County Government works, but perhaps the most enlightening so far has been how few people have any idea who their County Council person is or what district they live. District 3 stretches from O’Fallon/Dardenne Prairie through Cottleville and Weldon Spring on the south end and St Peters to the North. I’m enjoying this new challenge and

4 | BUSINESS CONNECTION | AUGUST 2013

I look forward to working with my neighbors on ways to keep our County growing and thriving. The one common thread in my activities is my love of working with people. Whether it’s through the many roles I have been honored to serve with Rotary clubs in St Charles County and throughout our district of Eastern Missouri, or the Barnes St Peters Progress West HealthCare Foundation board, or others, I find the people you get to meet along the way make all the difference in your life. Everyone has a story, and according to my wife, I am on a mission to hear them all. If you can make time in your busy life to stop and listen to the stories people all around you carry with them, you’ll find you can make a new friend because you were interested in what they had to share, but almost every time you learn something that can help you grow as well. In my position as an Account Executive at Charter Media, I find my greatest joy in meeting a small business owner and learning why they would risk so much to open the business they are building. Most love what they are doing and appreciate someone willing to lend a hand to help them overcome challenges which help grow their passion...their business. I’m looking forward to getting to know the stories we are lucky enough to have within the O’Fallon chamber and the people behind them. The knowledge we have to share will make all of us better, if we just stop and listen.

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONIES WELCOME TO O’FALLON! The membership of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce continues to amaze and impress me! At the beginning of this year I issued a challenge to all of our members to become an active member of their Chamber of Commerce and to make it a priority to attend networking and committee functions. Well, I’m excited to tell you that for the second quarter in a row our participation numbers are increasing, this time by 14% over last year! This is no surprise to those of you who have made Chamber functions a priority, you’ve witnessed month after month of packed Business After Hours, Morning Schmooze attendance doubling and full banquet centers at our Membership Meetings. Once again, I’ll ask that you keep up the good work in attending our functions to get the greatest return on your chamber investment.

The O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce and the City of O’Fallon are excited to welcome these new businesses to the community and to help them celebrate with a with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony.

JLJ Technology 2427 Hwy K | O’Fallon, MO 63368

Speaking of ROI, have you checked out our new calculator? Yes, the O’Fallon Chamber now has a tool online to help our members calculate the return on their Chamber membership. The calculator takes into consideration the average annual value of each new customer, the amount of leads from membership, and the amount that is converted to a sale. If you have a moment check it out at www. OFallonChamber.org/Membership-ROI, I’m sure that you’ll be astounded as to the value of your Chamber membership! As the Chairman of the Board I can assure you that your ROI is something that we are always thinking about and striving to improve. At the July Board of Director’s meeting, after a couple months of discussion and research, the Board approved the opportunity to begin issuing Certificates of Origin. Although you may not have had the need for a COO yet, all businesses who ship oversees are required to have one. By offering the certificates the O’Fallon Chamber is now better able to serve our member exporters while also helping to generate non-dues revenue for our organization. You can read more about this new step for the Chamber on par 1 and 13.

hank you to everyone who made the 29th Annual Firecracker 10K, 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run on Thursday, July 4th a huge success! Over 1,400 runners and a couple hundred spectators made this the biggest year ever. With unheard of July weather, (it was 68 degrees when the run started) all of our runners had a fantastic morning and then were treated to a plentiful runners only area full of eats and drinks from donations from local businesses. With an event this large we couldn’t have done it without all of our committee members and volunteers who showed up early and worked hard. We truly appreciate all of the help from the City of O’Fallon, and the O’Fallon Police Department. The Firecracker Run is held each year in order to promote our members as well as raise funds for the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce so that we can keep our membership dues at a level that is affordable to all of our businesses. With such success the run exceeded the budgeted goal. We are already planning an even netter 30th annual run!

RECYCLING

ECERTIFY

that all electronics are properly handled and recycled, and that all hard drives are wiped.

Certificates of Origin are mandatory to validate goods for export to most countries, however mailing or sending them via courier, or traveling to the chamber offices for manual processing has proven inefficient and costly. Through eCertify with the O’Fallon Chamber, exporters can submit their certificates electronically which will eliminate courier costs, reduce administration costs, reduce errors, improve turnaround time, and provide prompt notification of acceptance via the same electronic method.

Electronic items will be accepted at no charge no matter how old or in what condition they are in. CRT Monitors and Tube Televisions will only be accepted with a $15 donation. Items accepted includes: PC towers, Laptops, Networking equipment, CD/DVD and floppy drives, Cell phones, Satellite receivers, Wire, Cables, AC Adapters, Lithium Ion batteries, Memory, Medical Equipment, Power supplies, UPS, PC Fans, VCR, DVD Players, printers, Phones and Phone systems, Heatsinks, Basically any type of computer equipment. The O’Fallon Jaycees and Adonis Recycling would like to partner with any local businesses to provide them with electronic recycling services year round when the time comes to upgrade office equipment. “We realize that not everyone can take advantage of the single recycling day and want to be able to provide businesses with a green and secure way to get rid of their old office equipment.” said Joe Freeman, President of the O’Fallon Jaycees. Proceeds from the event will go to the O’Fallon Jaycees. The O’Fallon Jaycees is a non-profit organization serving as the Young Professionals group of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce in the St. Charles County region. The mission of the group is to provide the opportunity for young individuals to develop the leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship, and fellowship necessary to create positive change.

“Our exporters and freight forwarders are looking for ways to increase efficiency, reduce time and speed up delivery when it comes to Certificates of Origin,” said Erin Williams, CEO/President, O’Fallon Chamber. “eCertify allows us to provide a proactive approach for an overall community beneficial service.
