RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONIES WELCOME TO O’FALLON! The results are in! Thank you to each of you who took the time to complete the 2013 Membership Survey. This survey will help to guide our programs and services for the betterment of our organization. Before I get into the results, I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who participated in Operation Thank You and to those of you who took time out of your day to talk with our volunteers about how our organization can serve you better. We truly appreciate the feedback and understand that by serving our member businesses better we will achieve our vision of being the catalyst for prosperity. Although Operation Thank You has officially ended, and our Membership Survey has closed, know that you are always welcome to contact staff or Board members to discuss how the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce can continue to improve. Now, onto the results. You told us that on a scale of 1-5 (5 being excellent) we are a 4.52; although that number is great and something we’re proud of, we will continue to strive towards a perfect 5! Members also told us the main features that they take advantage of are our networking opportunities, community exposure/involvement and referrals. The survey also told us to work on more informal networking opportunities as well as increased advertising opportunities to other members. These are all areas that the Board will be researching to expand and/or increase in order to serve you better. Again, thank you for your participation, and I look forward to seeing you at our May 28 general membership meeting. Adam Hopper 2013 Chairman of the Board

The O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce and the City of O’Fallon are excited to welcome these new businesses to the community and to help them celebrate with a with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony.

Jeremy’s Baby Back Ribs 1 Rack of Baby Back Ribs- skinned 1 Stick of Margarine or Butter Your choice of seasoning- we prefer Fat Pat’s Rib Rub (sold at Jeremy’s Market) Foil Jeremy’s BBQ Sauce- Original or Kansas City Style Rub down the rack of ribs with your choice of seasoning, place it in a foil wrap with a stick of butter or margarine on top. Let it cook on the grill or in the oven at 350* for 1 hour. If you are cooking on the grill, unwrap after 1 hour and place on the grill plates for a few minutes on each side to get that crispy texture. Then cover with your choice of BBQ sauce and enjoy!

SHADOWRUN

CONTINUED FROM COVER PAGE Independence Day while stationed half way around the world. Participants will have fun as well as challenge themselves while at Camp Phoenix in Afghanistan. “Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen enjoy the shadow runs because they are great for morale, and they allow for us to be normal and not have to wear a service issued PT uniform for the run.” Maj Eric Peterson said when asked why they enjoyed shadow runs. “I would like to thank the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce for allowing us to participate in this great event.” The run committee will be providing each runner with a free registration that includes a bib, t-shirt, goodie bag and award medals; plus there will be booth set up at the O’Fallon Firecracker Run where residents and runners can personally thank these brave soldiers. Maj. Eric Peterson who will be leading the race in Kabul said he will be sending photos of their race, a banner signed by all the soldiers and an American flag flown in combat.

Again, I can’t express how thrilled we are to be working with Maj Peterson and the SPARTANS!” said Erin Williams, President/CEO of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce.

O’FALLON RECEIVES STORMREADY RECOGNITION

T

The City of O’Fallon was recently recognized as a StormReady community by the National Weather Service, which sponsors the program. To be recognized as StormReady, communities must demonstrate severe weather readiness and meet communication and other guidelines established by the National Weather Service in partnership with federal, state and local emergency management programs. “We can be proud of O’Fallon’s designation as a StormReady community,” said Police Officer Andy Stowers. “As we saw this month, with spring storms following on the heels of severe winter weather, it’s important to know when major storms are coming and be prepared to deal with them.” StormReady is a voluntary “grassroots” program and there is no cost to apply. Sponsored by NOAA’s National Weather Service, StormReady puts the focus on improving communication and severe weather preparedness in communities. It also helps

community leaders and emergency managers strengthen local hazard mitigation and refine emergency response plans. To earn the designation, communities must: • Establish a 24-hour Warning Point and Emergency Operations Center • Establish multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and alert the public • Create a system that monitors local weather conditions • Promote public readiness through community seminars, severe weather spotter training and by conducting emergency exercises • Incorporate severe weather threats into the community’s hazard mitigation and emergency response plans The StormReady program benefits communities by: • Improving the timeliness and effectiveness of hazardous weather warnings for the public • Providing clear, detailed recommendations which will help communities establish and improve effective hazardous weather operations

8 | BUSINESS CONNECTION | MAY 2013

• Supporting hazardous weather mitigation programs that have achieved a desired performance level • Providing an incentive to communities which, once they are recognized, can identify themselves as being StormReady • Helping ensure that the community is prepared for other civil emergencies. For more information about StormReady, visit www.stormready. noaa.gov/publications.htm. Visiting Angels Westplex Ownership Change, Lamartinas Announce Retirement We are pleased to announce that we have finally made the difficult decision that it is time to retire. As a result, we will be transitioning out of the Visiting Angels office over the next couple of months. Making this change in our lives possible, are the new Visiting Angels owners– Joe and Amy Deters of Wildwood, MO. Joe and Amy will be an excellent addition to the management team that you’ve come to know over the years. They bring a high degree of passion and experience to the table and we believe they are the perfect candidates to nurture the legacy that we have been building over the past four years. While a change of this nature may create feelings of uncertainty, we will make every effort to create a smooth transition. Most aspects of our office routine will remain the same under the new owners. Our office staff – Jen, Michelle, Donna, Lana and Natalie will continue in their office roles and you, like our other caregivers, will continue with your current clients and schedule. In fact, most aspects of Visiting Angels will continue in the same way as in the past. We will be working with Joe and Amy over the next several weeks to transition the office seamlessly and continue the excellent services provided by Visiting Angels. Thank you for your ongoing contributions to Visiting Angels. Please call me if you have any questions. Sincerely, Mark & Gerri Lamartina

LEMONADE DAY

CONTINUES FROM COVER PAGE Lemonade Day 2013 St. Charles County is being organized by the civic group Partners for Progress (PfP) in cooperation with the Economic Development Center (EDC), Charter Communications, Lindenwood University, and surrounding area Chambers of Commerce. “We want to help local youth learn how to take their dreams and turn them into a working business plan using the same principles required to start any big company,” said Greg Prestemon, PfP president. “As we inspire kids to work hard and make a profit, they are also taught to spend some, save some, and share some by giving back to their community,” he added. For this inaugural year of the local program, the goal is to have 250 lemonade stands operating in St. Charles County on June 15th. Event organizers estimate 200,000 youngsters across America and Canada will be participating in the 2013 program. An informational event for interested youngsters and their parents will be held in May 11, 2013. For more information about Lemonade Day 2013 St. Charles County, please click here or call Curtis Stuesse at 636.441.6880 x 257.
