COACHES

Paul Page

Head Baseball Coach

Paul Page enters his 26th year as the head baseball coach at Ohio Dominican University. Page is the winningest coach in school history and was ranked amongst the winningest NAIA coaches before ODU transitioned into the NCAA. With over 30 years of coaching experience, Page developed the Ohio Dominican program into one of the premier baseball programs in the NAIA and guided the Panthers NCAA and GLIAC ranks. He earned his 800th win during the 2008 season and left the NAIA level with 864 victories, which ranked in the top 13 of the NAIA in career wins. Page also compiled a winning percentage of .683 in the NAIA, which ranked him fifth overall among active coaches at that level. He won his 900th career game on April 15, 2012, against Wayne State. In 1988, Page was hired as Ohio Dominican’s third athletic director and head baseball coach. As athletic director, he helped build the ODU athletic department into a conference and national power until 2004 when he decided to focus strictly on the baseball program. A tireless worker, he is credited as a key initiator of many ODU athletic department fundraisers and the improvement and expansion of athletic facilities. He played an important role in the planning and development of Alumni Hall, which opened in 1989. In the dugout, Page has been named conference coach of the year five times and twice named district baseball coach of the year. He has guided the baseball program to a 907-452-6 (.667) overall record in 25 seasons. Page has established the program as a national power, winning 11 regular season titles, nine conference tournament championships, six regional championships in thirteen appearances, and made six NAIA World Series appearances. ODU has won at least 30 games in a season a remarkable 21 times in Page’s tenure, including 10 40-win seasons. In 1996, the Panthers notched a 36-20 record and finished fifth at the NAIA World Series, the best finish in school history. ODU would go on to appear in the NAIA World Series from 2001-03, 2005 and 2008 as well, and the Panthers would finish the 2005 campaign with a school-record 47 wins. In his time at ODU, Page has produced 39 All-Americans and 20 Academic All-Americans. Under his tutelage, former Panther southpaw Jonathan Sanchez reached the big leagues and helped the San Francisco Giants to the 2010 World Series title. Former Panther pitcher Ryan Robowski climbed to the AAA level with the Detroit Tigers organization in 2011 as well. Page, a Williamstown, West Virginia native, graduated from Muskingum College in 1973, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in history and was an all-conference catcher. After his days as a Muskie, Page continued his education at Mississippi State. He coached for two seasons under legendary coach Ron Polk as a graduate assistant

before receiving his Master’s Degree in health and physical education in 1978. From there, Page became the assistant coach at Marietta College and established himself as one of the premier hitting coaches in college baseball. He was a key component in the Pioneers’ two national championships and developing a number of all-conference offensive players. Page and his wife, Sally, reside in Westerville. Their son, Wes, was an Academic AllAmerican infielder for Ohio Dominican.

COACHES

JT Feldkamp

Matt Davis

Catching Coach

Assistant Coach

Former Ohio State standout Matt Davis, who also spent seven years in professional baseball, enters his first season as an assistant coach for Ohio Dominican.

Former Panther catcher JT Feldkamp remains in Panther Valley this season as he joins the Ohio Dominican coaching staff.

Davis helped lead the Buckeyes to three consecutive Big Ten titles from 2001-03 and was a First Team All-Big Ten selection following the 2003 season. Davis, a seventh-round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians in 2003, left OSU as the school’s all-time leader in saves and also set the single-season appearance mark.

Feldkamp was a Second Team All-GLIAC performer for ODU in 2011, batting .313 with a pair of home runs and 20 RBI. He walked 14 times to just six strikeouts and registered a .437 on-base percentage. Feldkamp also had six multi-hit efforts and four multi-RBI games this spring.

Davis spent parts of four seasons in the Indians’ minor league system and also played in the White Sox system and with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League for two years. He appeared in 286 games in seven years in the minors and recorded 67 saves.

In his career, Feldkamp made 123 starts and was a .316 lifetime hitter with 11 home runs and 81 RBI, to go along with a .428 on-base percentage.

After his playing career, Davis worked as the pitching coach at Mason High School and also as the assistant coach at nearby Upper Arlington High School. Recently, Davis spent two years as the head varsity baseball coach at Novinger High School in Missouri.

Billy Tecklenburg Assistant Coach

Billy Tecklenburg returns to the Ohio Dominican dugout as he begins his collegiate coaching career with the Panthers in 2013. Tecklenburg, who will work primarily with infielders, hitters and baserunners, was a member of the ODU baseball program from 2009-12. Despite battling injuries, he still appeared in 101 games in a Panther uniform, making 69 starts, and batted .312 with 29 RBI and 44 runs scored in his four seasons. A native of Troy, Ohio, Tecklenburg graduated from Ohio Dominican in 2012 with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics and History.

SEASON PREVIEW

After falling just shy of a GLIAC Tournament bid in 2012, Ohio Dominican’s baseball team has one goal in mind for the upcoming season: consistency. The Panthers closed last season with a 24-24 overall record, with a 16-18 mark in GLIAC play. With several key upperclassmen returning, the development of a large contingent of freshmen and sophomores and several transfers, head coach Paul Page believes ODU has the talent to succeed this season – if the Panthers can achieve their day-in, day-out goals. “We feel like we have a number of guys who have potential to be exceptional players, whether they’re freshmen, transfers or returners,” said Page, who begins his 26th year at the helm of the Panther program. “But they simply haven’t done it yet at this level, and that’s going to be our biggest challenge this spring is for them to play at that consistent level.” Last year, ODU ranked third in the GLIAC in batting with a .302 average, but was just seventh in total runs scored. The pitching staff, meanwhile, was fifth in earned runs allowed, but also walked the third-most batters. “Our team average and offensive numbers were close to top of league, but our runs weren’t,” Page said. “We didn’t do a good job with runners in scoring position and we didn’t have guys who could drive the ball into the gap or out of the park with consistency. This year, we think we have guys in the program who ability to do that.” The following is a positional breakdown of the Panthers entering 2013. INFIELD A mixture of veteran players and newcomers will comprise the four infield positions for ODU, led by sophomore Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) at second base. Bartolone had a stellar start to his rookie campaign, batting .333 with eight RBI in 12 games before an injury derailed his season. “Vince’s return is tremendous because he’s very knowledgeable,” Page said. “He knows how to go about his business in the batter’s box and he’s reliable in the field.” At first base, junior Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio) will be joined by sophomore Austin Butler (Pickerington, Ohio) and freshman Collin Parcher (Napoleon, Ohio). Raschilla batted .314 with a pair of home runs last season, while Butler hit .327 with a pair of homers as well. “Anthony has continued to work hard and improve,” Page said. “Butler did a nice job last year and was a dependable hitter for us. Collin has shown flashes of being a middle of the lineup type hitter. He’s a big guy who has pop in bat and a good understanding in the box.” With the graduation of Tyler Zaidel, a pair of players will vie for time at shortstop in senior Chase Westphal (Brecksville, Ohio) and freshman

12

http://www.ohiodominicanpanthers.com

Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio). Westphal made 26 starts, primarily at second base, last season. “Chase was a really good role player for us at second and short last year who has good hands, can turn double plays and is a real asset to the ballclub,” Page said. “Jacob was a surprise to us because his growth has been off the charts. He’s a big, strong player who can hit in the middle of the lineup.” At third base, sophomore Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio) will have a chance to be the everyday starter. A transfer from Ohio State, Jaskot appeared in nine games for the Buckeyes last spring. “Phil has the potential to be a big bat,” Page said. “He’s a very strong guy who wants to succeed and has the tools to be a run-generator.” Also in the mix for playing time in the infield this season is freshman Dylan West (Westerville, Ohio), a speedster who can play up the middle, and sophomore Ian Sullinger (Lexington, Ohio), who did not see game action in 2012. CATCHERS The graduation of Zack Dascenzo, who hit .333 last spring, leaves a void behind the plate that will be filled by sophomores Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio) and Kevin Lydic (Dublin, Ohio). Tisdale, who split time between the dish and the outfield in 2012, hit .340 with two homers and 17 RBI while earning honorable mention All-GLIAC and Daktronics All-Midwest Region Second Team honors for his utility role. “Kyle has been consistently good for us,” Page said. “He’ll be our starting opening day catcher and hit in the middle of the lineup. He had a really nice freshman year and is more mature now.” Lydic missed last spring with an injury but brings a strong presence behind the plate. “Kevin is a very good defensive catcher,” Page said. “He’s a very good receiver, can block pitches in the dirt and he can throw the ball.” OUTFIELD John Bowron and Evan Shaw combined to make 91 starts in the outfield for the Panthers last season, and their departures have opened up playing time for several returners and a transfer as well. Senior Ryan Rovnak (Poland, Ohio) will move from the hot corner to left field this season. He batted .287 in making 29 starts in 2012. Junior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela), meanwhile, is projected to take over in center field after earning All-American honors at the junior college ranks. “Ryan has really improved offensively,” Page said. “He’s a really good athlete and good baseball player. Jossue has the talent to be the best position player in our program for the last five or six years. He can run, throw and hit

SEASON PREVIEW DONE

with power. If he doesn’t press and try to do too much, he is an All-GLIAC type performer, a game-changer.” Competing for time in right field will be junior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) and sophomore Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio), while freshman Austin Greene (Dublin, Ohio) and sophomores Matt Jurevicius (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Kyle Suminski (Fraser, Mich.) will also vie for time in the outfield. Rudolph batted .304 with a team-high four home runs last season, while Jurevicius and Schluessler combined to make 16 starts in the outfield. Junior Christian Prince (Hudsonville, Mich.), who saw time at first base and at DH in 2012, could also earn some innings in the outfield this spring. Prince batted .362 with 17 RBI last season. PITCHERS ODU’s returning pitchers from 2012 combined to make 40 of the team’s 48 starts and is highlighted by a pair of seniors in Nick Venditti (Brecksville, Ohio) and Alex Borgan (Pickerington, Ohio). Venditti led the Panthers with 12 starts and 77.1 innings, tallying a 5-5 record with a 4.42 ERA and punching out 61. He ranked in the top 10 in the GLIAC in starts, innings pitched and strikeouts. Borgan missed most of 2012 with an injury but did register a 3-1 record in his limited time. “Nick had a great year last year and we know he’s capable of doing that again because of how hard he works,” Page said. “Alex has a chance to be an all-conference pitcher. We thought that last year because he really developed his breaking ball and was prepared to be a No. 1 or No. 2 pitcher.” The Panther staff has more depth this year than in the recent past, bolstered by the development of sophomores Cole Carpenter (Zanesville,

Ohio) and Daniel Mooney (Wauconda, Ill.). Carpenter made eight starts and Mooney appeared in three ballgames last season, but both have taken big strides in their offseason work. “Cole and Dan have really shone so far,” Page said. “They have the tools to be elite pitchers at the D-II level. They’ve taken big steps forward in command and understanding and patience and poise and the things that make pitchers successful.” Also returning to the Panther rotation is junior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio), who followed up a strong freshman campaign by winning four ballgames last spring, and sophomore Alberto Canales (West Park, Fla.), who paced the Panthers with a 6-1 record last season. “Both Sean and Alberto are returning from injuries in the offseason but are both working hard and capable of putting up big numbers,” Page said. “We’re looking for more consistency from Sean this season. Alberto has thrown the ball well at times and also needs to be more consistent.” A slew of other pitchers will also earn time on the mound, led by Bartolone in relief. He did not allow an earned run in his seven outings last season and Page called him “the most poised pitcher on our staff.” Also returning is sophomore Tucker Hughes (Sabina, Ohio), who made 10 appearances last spring, along with classmates Marques Pagan (Cleveland, Ohio), Austin Monnin (Napoleon, Ohio) and Josh Henderson (Fairfield, Ohio). Freshman Ryan Colegate (Centerville, Ohio) has a chance to make an immediate impact, while freshman Drew Murray (Somerset, Ohio) can earn innings along with sophomore Sam Bohon (Worthington, Ohio) as a left-handed reliever.

University Overview Ohio Dominican University is an accredited four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1911 in the Catholic and Dominican traditions. The university has more than 3,100 students and offers undergraduate degrees in over 50 majors as well as six graduate degree programs. Ohio Dominican uses a studentcentered approach, with a commitment to quality teaching and learning and a number of academic programs of distinction. Academics are at the heart of everything done at Ohio Dominican University. Institutions of higher learning exist to provide education for their students, and that education starts in the classroom. It continues, of course, on athletic fields and in residence halls, in rehearsals and clubs, in the library and the lab, but it begins with the relationship between students and their instructors. ODU’s mission is grounded in our identity as a Catholic and Dominican liberal arts institution. The University’s motto - “To contemplate truth and share the fruits of that contemplation with others” - serves as our guiding principle of teaching and learning. ODU’s core curriculum, taken by all students, focuses on seven learning outcomes that collectively identify the institution’s expectations for what all students will be able to be and do as Ohio Dominican graduates. Additionally, students complete a sequence of courses in one of

The University is significantly expanding the level of on-campus student extracurricular activities and improving residential life. At the same time, Ohio Dominican has expanded its extracurricular offerings, providing a greater number of on-campus activities for both residential and commuter students. A central focus has been the addition of a new Student Center and expansion of athletic programs, which attract student athletes and non-athletes alike, and foster alumni participation. Student organizations and activities at ODU offer events and activities that relate to areas of academic interest, student government, artistic performance, multicultural identity, media, athletic, social, honorary, religious and service organizations. Ohio Dominican student activities and events are open to all students. Over the past 10 years, Ohio Dominican has followed an aggressive expansion plan for its facilities which include three new residence halls; additional sports and recreation facilities; development of Sunbury Road as a gateway to the campus; the new Bishop James A Griffin Student Center and a new science facility, Battelle Hall. The 2010 - 2011 academic year was a special time for the institution as its students, faculty, staff, alumni, community leaders and friends celebrated the University’s Centennial anniversary. The Centennial theme, A Century of Transforming Lives, reflects ODU’s Dominican heritage, history and tradition. This celebration encourages the University community to reflect upon the transformative effect that Ohio Dominican has had on the lives its faculty, students, alumni, staff and friends. Ohio Dominican is focused on becoming the preeminent Catholic institution of higher learning, providing quality programs in both the liberal arts and the professions, committed to the fundamental value of liberal education, and deeply rooted in its Dominican tradition. Ohio Dominican is known for its student-centered and innovative approaches to teaching and learning; its commitment to excellence in academic and co-curricular programs; its commitment to service and community responsibility; its outstanding campus facilities and resources; its global outreach in response to educational needs; and its reputation for distinction in values-based higher education.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

Panther Field

Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now considered one of the finest college baseball facilities in the country.

Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improvement to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artificial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The field has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent additions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the field with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket office, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the finer facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.

Panther Softball Field

Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer

Alumni Hall

Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One fulllength basketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleachers were added to the far side of the court. After the renovation all of the coaches now have an office on the second floor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spacious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.

Panther Courts

Men’s and Women’s Tennis Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently resurfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Panther Valley/Frank Damian Field Baseball

First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Valley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below street-level and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The field is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left field line and a visitor bullpen along the right field line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther

Over the years Panther Softball Field has evolved into one of the nicest facilities in the state of Ohio. The brick dust field is routinely praised by Panther opponents as the epitome of what a field should be. With its dimensions of 210 to the corners and 225 to straight away center, this softball complex features enclosed dugouts, a scoreboard, bullpens beyond the left field line, and an underground irrigation system.

Hitting Facility Located next to the softball field is the hitting facility for both the baseball and softball teams. The hitting facility provides a place for both teams to refine their skills through the harsh Central Ohio weather. With the retractable nets, the hitting facility contains three batting cages complete with pitching mounds and pitching machines.

Panther Training Facility Along with the addition of the new stadium in 2004, the Panthers added a 7,500 square foot training facility west of the main parking lot. The facility is equipped with the latest in hammer strength weight training equipment and ODU’s second athletic training room. Offices for athletic training personal are also located in the new facility.

Cumberland Trail Golf Club The Panthers are fortunate to call Cumberland Trail Golf Club their home. The course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 1999 and measures up to 7,205 yards from the back tees. Known for its excellent conditioning and difficult design, Cumberland Trail ranks fourth in Central Ohio among public golf courses, according to Mid Ohio Golfer, and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest. The greens at Cumberland Trail are considered by many to be the finest in the Columbus area and challenge even the best putters. The ODU golf team has unlimited access to the facility which includes a driving range and large practice green.

Golf Practice Facilities ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at one of two practice facilities. Bridgeview Driving Range, located just 6 minutes from campus, serves as the outdoor practice facility during the Spring and Fall Grass tees, a large putting green, and an excellent short game practice area are just a few of the benefits available to our teams. When the weather turns cold, ODU players practice at “The Dome”, the largest indoor driving range in Ohio. “The Dome” measures a full 90 yards from front to back and the indoor temperature is kept around 60 degrees. It provides the perfect environment for the golfers to improve during the cold winter months.

THE GLIAC

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University (then Institute), and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to that time, all GLIAC member institutions were located in the state of Michigan. On Dec. 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full-time members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after the 2007-08 season.

The GLIAC entered a new era during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. Also under his leadership, the conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The Conference expanded on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, joined the GLIAC. The League will further expand on July, 2012 when Malone University and Walsh University, both located in the Canton, Ohio area, become the 15th and 16th GLIAC members. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC Management Council is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2012-13. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.
