Scott Miles, Sports Information Director Scott Miles is entering his second year as the sports information director at Ohio Dominican University. Miles, a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), helped develop and launch www.ohiodominicanpanthers.com in December, 2010 and also started and co-hosted the weekly “Panther Spotlight” coaches shows. Miles graduated from nearby Capital University in December, 2008, with a degree in English-Professional Writing and worked as a student assistant in the sports information office, running the department on an interim basis in the summer of 2008. The Solon, Ohio native interned with the Ohio High School Athletic Association from 200809 and spent a year as the athletic media relations intern with the University of Toledo, serving as the primary media contact for seven varsity teams while assisting with coverage of the football, men’s and women’s basketball, soccer and baseball teams. Outside of his work in sports information, Miles spent two summers as an intern with the Lake County Captains, a minor league affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, and called baseball games for the Delaware Cows of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. He also announced football, volleyball, basketball and baseball games for Capital and was the sports editor of the campus newspaper. Ryan Beigle, ODU Assistant Sports Information Director Ryan Beigle enters his sixth season as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach and assistant sports information director at Ohio Dominican University. Beigle was named the second head tennis coach in school history in August of 2006 and, as a full time member of the ODU athletic department, became the first assistant SID in school history. A 2002 graduate of Bethel College, Beigle received his degree in Education while playing men’s tennis for the Pilots from 1996-00. Beigle helped lead the Pilots to back-to-back NCCAA National Championships in 1999-00. Prior to joining the Panther staff, Beigle gained valuable experience coaching both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Marian High School in Mishawaka, Indiana. While at Marian he helped lead the women’s team to a 65-15 overall record in his six seasons. He also led the men’s team to a 28-12 overall record in three seasons. Beigle also spent the 2005-06 seasons as the head women’s tennis coach at his alma mater. During his two seasons at Bethel, he led the Pilots to a 30-17 overall record and was named the 2006 NCCAA Coach of the Year while leading the team to a NCCAA National Title. Beigle took over an extremely youthful but talented Panther squad on both the men’s and women’s teams in 2006. Beigle and the women’s team made a return trip in 2009. He has twice been named the AMC women’s Coach of the Year and was honored at the NAIA National Tournament in 2009 as the Wilson/ITA Region III Coach of the Year. Beigle also led a youthful men’s team to their first AMC Tournament title and the program’s first NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2009. 2012-13 PREVIEW

Despite entering the 2012-13 campaign with one of the youngest rosters in the conference, Ohio Dominican’s women’s basketball team has attacked its pre-season preparation with a newfound sense of urgency as the Panthers prepare for their third season of Division II and GLIAC play. With no seniors and five first-year players on the team, ODU will have plenty of new faces on the court this season, as well as a new captain steering the ship as Lynsey Warren takes over as the head coach after serving as ODU’s top assistant last season. “We have lofty goals for this year,” Warren said. “We don’t just want to compete in this conference, we want to win. We’re trying to create a culture of winning and a championship mentality. That has to happen from the weight room to conditioning to the class room to practice every day. We’re driving it home that they have to learn what it takes, and I think they’re doing that.” The lack of senior leadership can actually work to a team’s advantage, Warren pointed out, in that it accelerates the growth process of the entire roster. “It makes them grow up a little faster,” Warren said. “You don’t have a senior to lean on and say, ‘She’s going to do it.’ It’s going to fall on our juniors and sophomores to step up, and

I have all the faith that we have a good group ready to take on that role.” The Panthers do return eight letterwinners from last year’s squad, including a pair of starters in junior forward Katelyn Stuckey (Millersburg, Ohio) and sophomore guard Kacee Hockenberry (Haviland, Ohio). Stuckey, who averaged 8.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last year, will be counted on to lead a young post unit as she’s the lone returner who logged significant minutes in that group. “Katelyn’s really skilled and can score on anyone in the post, and we need her to do that,” said Warren of the 5-10 Stuckey. “I like to say that she uses her size disadvantage to her advantage because she can create her shots.” Joining Stuckey in the frontcourt will be sophomore Olivia Zwayer (Lewis Center, Ohio), who appeared in seven contests last year, and a trio of freshmen in Melissa Scherpenberg (Cincinnati, Ohio), Alex Hallenbeck (St. Johns, Mich.) and Morgan Cnudde (Corunna, Mich.). “Olivia moved from the wing into the post this year, which has helped her focus a lot,” Warren said. “Her biggest challenge is staying consistent. She can do things really well but needs to do it more frequently. The rest of the posts are freshmen, and while the transition for any college player takes time, in the post it takes a little more time. The high school game isn’t as physical and they can get away without playing as much with their back

to the basket.” ODU has more experience on the perimeter, highlighted by the return of Hockenberry, who was a preseason All-GLIAC selection. The 5-5 guard averaged 7.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest as she started all 26 games at the point. “Kacee has a lot of experience from last year and is the top guard we have,” Warren said. “She’s really quick and competitive, which is a great combination because she gets after it.” The Panthers also have a pair of juniors with experience in Mykeila Mast (Millersburg, Ohio) and Christina Pentaudi (Dayton, Ohio). Mast, who played in 19 games last season, has developed into a more complete basketball player, while Pentaudi, who has been slowed by injury, brings a lot of the leadership qualities that coaches look for out of their players. “Mykeila has grown so much from last year, and her maturity and comfort level have really improved,” Warren said. “She’s a really strong defender who can pick up anyone full court and give them trouble. She’s also a strong offensive threat, taking the ball to the basket and also has an outside game. Christina is the type of player that everyone respects even when she’s not out there. People know what she’s put in and how much she cares.”

in the backcourt in sophomore Paige Stought (Pickerington, Ohio), a versatile player with length and size, while sophomore Holly Brunswick (Fort Recovery, Ohio) and freshman Rachael Torey (Sterling Heights, Mich.) will also vie for minutes. Stought played in all 26 games, averaging 17.2 minutes per contest, while Brunswick is working her way back from an injury. “Paige is a basketball junkie and has a really high basketball IQ, which is her strength,” Warren said. “Holly has been a pleasant surprise – we didn’t know what she was capable of, but she is quick and athletic and has a deadly first step. I’ve been ecstatic with Rachael and how she’s done so far. She picks up on things so quickly and is the most coachable kid I’ve ever coached.” For the Panthers to reach their goals this season, they have to stay disciplined and focus on the “little things that result in big plays later,” Warren said, and work as a unit. “Our team motto is ‘Together’ and we work on enhancing that every day,” Warren said. “It’s everyday life, not just on the court, being together in everything we do. And on the court, it’s knowing, demanding and expecting that all five people have to play together, and all 13 have to be ready to play. We’re so much like a family off of the court that you will see that pay off on the court.”

COACHES

Lynsey Warren Head Coach

Lynsey Warren was named Ohio Dominican’s sixth women’s basketball coach on July 24, 2012 after serving as the team’s top assistant in the 2011-12 season. “I’m extremely excited for this opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program,” Warren said. “I want to thank Athletic Director Jeff Blair, the administration and the entire athletic department staff for their support. They had the faith to give me the position in the interim role and now have put it in my hands for the future, and I’m grateful for the chance. I also want to thank my family and all of my former coaches that I played for and worked for who helped get me to the point that I am today.” “We are thrilled to have Lynsey as the next head coach and are confident she is the right person to take the program to the next level,” Blair said. “Her experience in working with the team this past year, as well as all of her experiences in the GLIAC as a player and coach, made her a tremendous choice for this position. Lynsey’s passion and enthusiasm for the university and the team also helped set her apart, as did the respect that she has gained from both her peers and her players.” Warren, a Columbus native who attended nearby Bishop Watterson High School before playing volleyball and basketball collegiately at Ashland University, joined Ohio Dominican’s coaching staff prior to the 2011-12 season. As the lead assistant, she was responsible for every aspect of the program, including recruiting, game

preparation, individual skill development and strength and conditioning. During the season, Warren served as the acting head coach for two weeks, highlighted by leading the Panthers to a GLIAC victory over Northwood. She has also overseen all facets of the program since Nathan Bellman’s resignation to pursue other opportunities following the season. “I can’t wait to develop this program,” Warren said. “It has a ton of potential to contend both in the GLIAC and at the national level in Division II. It will be a challenge but I’m looking forward to it. We have a great group of studentathletes here now and we’re looking to keep building a winning culture here. We know that to be the best you have to beat the best, and if we can win in the GLIAC we have the potential to advance far in the tournament.” Prior to arriving at Ohio Dominican, Warren was the assistant coach at Division III Kenyon College, helping the Ladies to a 15-12 mark and 8-6 record in the NCAC. She also spent a year as the graduate assistant at her alma mater Ashland. A three-year letterwinner with the Eagles, Warren tallied 803 points, 467 rebounds, and a .522 field goal percentage while helping the team to an overall 57-33 record (.633). As a freshman, she averaged 7.8 points per game off of the bench for an Eagles’ squad that won the GLIAC South Division championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Warren’s most successful individual season came as a senior in 2008-09 when she led the team in points per game (14.0), field goal percentage (.530) and blocks (30) en route to an AllGLIAC South Division second-team selection. Warren’s athletic prowess also included four years as a starting setter on the Eagles’ volleyball team, where she garnered All-America status her junior and senior seasons and keyed Ashland’s run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2006. Warren received her bachelor’s in Business Administration in 2008 and a Master of Education in Sports Sciences in 2010 from Ashland.

ODU’s mission is grounded in our identity as a Catholic and Dominican liberal arts institution. The University’s motto - “To contemplate truth and share the fruits of that contemplation with others” - serves as our guiding principle of teaching and learning. ATHLETIC FACILITIES

Panther Field

Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now considered one of the finest college baseball facilities in the country.

Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improvement to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artificial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The field has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent additions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the field with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket office, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the finer facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.

Panther Softball Field

Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer

Alumni Hall

Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One fulllength basketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleachers were added to the far side of the court. After the renovation all of the coaches now have an office on the second floor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spacious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.

Panther Courts

Men’s and Women’s Tennis Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently resurfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Panther Valley/Frank Damian Field Baseball

First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Valley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below street-level and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The field is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left field line and a visitor bullpen along the right field line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther

Over the years Panther Softball Field has evolved into one of the nicest facilities in the state of Ohio. The brick dust field is routinely praised by Panther opponents as the epitome of what a field should be. With its dimensions of 210 to the corners and 225 to straight away center, this softball complex features enclosed dugouts, a scoreboard, bullpens beyond the left field line, and an underground irrigation system.

Hitting Facility Located next to the softball field is the hitting facility for both the baseball and softball teams. The hitting facility provides a place for both teams to refine their skills through the harsh Central Ohio weather. With the retractable nets, the hitting facility contains three batting cages complete with pitching mounds and pitching machines.

Panther Training Facility Along with the addition of the new stadium in 2004, the Panthers added a 7,500 square foot training facility west of the main parking lot. The facility is equipped with the latest in hammer strength weight training equipment and ODU’s second athletic training room. Offices for athletic training personal are also located in the new facility.

Cumberland Trail Golf Club The Panthers are fortunate to call Cumberland Trail Golf Club their home. The course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 1999 and measures up to 7,205 yards from the back tees. Known for its excellent conditioning and difficult design, Cumberland Trail ranks fourth in Central Ohio among public golf courses, according to Mid Ohio Golfer, and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest. The greens at Cumberland Trail are considered by many to be the finest in the Columbus area and challenge even the best putters. The ODU golf team has unlimited access to the facility which includes a driving range and large practice green.

Golf Practice Facilities ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at one of two practice facilities. Bridgeview Driving Range, located just 6 minutes from campus, serves as the outdoor practice facility during the Spring and Fall Grass tees, a large putting green, and an excellent short game practice area are just a few of the benefits available to our teams. When the weather turns cold, ODU players practice at “The Dome”, the largest indoor driving range in Ohio. “The Dome” measures a full 90 yards from front to back and the indoor temperature is kept around 60 degrees. It provides the perfect environment for the golfers to improve during the cold winter months.

He was elevated to the position of assistant athletic director in 2005, a role he held until 2010 when he was named the acting athletic director. The Bellefontaine, Ohio native played a critical role in ODU’s successful transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and entrance into the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2010. Currently, he is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the athletic department and its 18 varsity intercollegiate sports while serving as a member of the ODU Director’s Council, as well as on the Compliance, Athletic and Hall of Fame Committees. Blair is a 1998 graduate of the University of Findlay, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in sports management and was a four-time varsity baseball letterwinner. During his time as the Athletic Director at ODU, the Panthers won 14 conference titles and qualified for 12 national tournaments. Off the field, the Athletic Department has set high academic standards for its students as the athletes have earned a higher combined GPA then the general student body. Prior to taking over the athletic department at ODU, Blazer spent 14 years at Urbana University, where he served as Athletic Director, Men’s Golf Coach and a tenured Associate Professor in the Division of Business and Economics. Blazer has served the NAIA as a Region IX representative on the Council for Affiliated Conferences and Independents since 2003. He has also served as chairman of the Mid-States Football Association in 2000 and again in 2006 and was chairman of Men’s Golf in the American Mideast Conference for nine years. Blazer is also a member of the United States Golf Association and serves on the Board of Directors with the Ohio Publinx Golf Association. The 29 winners from all divisions were recognized during the 44th Annual NACDA Convention at the James J. Corbett Luncheon at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida. Blazer received his Bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in business administration and his Master’s degree in teacher education from Wright State University.

Sandy Rowley - Senior Woman Administrator A former Ohio Dominican student, assistant coach, and now in her 24th season as head coach of the Panther volleyball team, Sandy Rowley embodies the Panther persona. Rowley has been a fixture in the Panther athletic department for more than 25 years. She has the spirit and passion to continue as head coach for many years to come. THE GLIAC

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University (then Institute), and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to that time, all GLIAC member institutions were located in the state of Michigan. On Dec. 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full-time members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after the 2007-08 season.

The GLIAC entered a new era during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. Also under his leadership, the conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The Conference expanded on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, joined the GLIAC. The League will further expand on July, 2012 when Malone University and Walsh University, both located in the Canton, Ohio area, become the 15th and 16th GLIAC members. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC Management Council is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2012-13. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.
