Jim Bickel

Todd Goebbel

Associate Head Coach/ Defensive Coordinator

Jim Bickel enters his third year as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for Ohio Dominican. Bickel previously served as head football coach at Capital University in nearby Bexley. ODU’s defense helped lead the Panthers improve to 7-4 in just their second season of Division II play. ODU held Tiffin to minus-17 yards rushing, the best defensive effort by any GLIAC team in 2011. In the regular season finale, the Panthers forced three Indianapolis turnovers, the same amount the Greyhounds committed the entire season entering the game. Four Panther defenders garnered All-GLIAC honors, including Eisen Hardy, who was the GLIAC leader in passes defensed, and Justin Bell, who forced four fumbles, returning two for touchdowns, and had four picks. In 2010, Bickel oversaw a unit that produced three honorable mention All-GLIAC selections in Manju Jabbie, Jason McCurdy and Vincent Vasquez. McCurdy ranked among the conference leaders in interceptions with four, while Vasquez paced the GLIAC with 12.5 tackles per contest. Bickel spent nine seasons at Capital, including two (2008-09) as head coach, when he left with the best winning percentage in school history (.600). Prior to being named Capital’s ninth head coach in 2008, he was the associate head coach/defensive coordinator for the Crusaders. During his tenure at Capital, Bickel’s stamp on the program was an aggressive defense that produced a national defensive player of the year; seven All-Americans; a school record 50 quarterback sacks (2007); and a school-record 27 interceptions (2002). He also mentored two OAC Linebacker of the Year honorees (2003, 2008); two OAC Defensive Back of the Year winners (2005, 2007); and an OAC Offensive Lineman of the Year (2009). While with Capital, Bickel was twice named the Ohio Athletic Conference Assistant Coach of the Year after helping lead the team to three straight playoff appearances from 2005-07. Bickel has been part of college football in Central Ohio since 1977, when he became an assistant coach at his alma mater, Denison University. In 21 seasons with Denison, Bickel coached both offensive and defensive lines for a combined nine seasons and was defensive coordinator for 12 seasons. While defensive coordinator, he helped lead Denison to two North Coast Athletic Conference Championships (1985-86) and one NCAA Division III playoff appearance (1985). He also served as an assistant professor of physical education and an assistant baseball coach. Prior to joining Capital’s football coaching staff, Bickel served as defensive coordinator for Otterbein College. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communications and Economics from Denison and a master’s degree in Physical Education from The Ohio State University.

Offensive Coordinator/ Quarterbacks Coach

Todd Goebbel is in his third season with Ohio Dominican, working as the Panthers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2012 campaign. Under Goebbel’s tutelage, ODU has enjoyed its most prolific rushing attack in school history. Running back Mike Noffsinger set the school single-season and career rushing records and was honored as a Harlon Hill Trophy candidate as one of the best players in Division II in 2011. Jeremy Fudge emerged as one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the conference, leading all GLIAC quarterbacks in rushing while also completing over 60 percent of his passes. The Panthers finished 2011 as the third-best offense in the GLIAC, averaging 31.9 points per game, and were also the third-best rushing offense in the conference and 27th in the nation at 211.7 yards per game. In his two seasons directing the offense, Goebbel has had seven players earn All-GLIAC accolades, including Noffsinger and center Andrew Carpenter twice. Goebbel came to ODU from Marshall University, where he spent five seasons as the Thundering Herd’s receivers coach. During that time, Marshall saw steady improvement among its receiving corps and in special teams, which Goebbel coached for his first three years. Under his tutelage, Emmanuel Spann earned all-conference honors as a kick returner in 2006 and Chubb Small ranked among the CUSA leaders in the department in 2005. Goebbel brought a combination of quality, depth and balance to the Marshall passing game, which was evident in 2007 when five wideouts posted 276 or more receiving yards. Prior to joining the Marshall football coaching staff, Goebbel served as Ohio State’s defensive quality control coach for one season. In that role, he coached the specialists and assisted with special teams, assisted with film breakdown of the opponents, scouting and self-evaluation of the Buckeye defense. Goebbel helped take the Buckeyes to an 8-4 record that included a win over Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl. Goebbel, a native of Delaware, Ohio, attended Kent State University and was a three-year starting quarterback for the Golden Flashes, winning MVP honors as a sophomore in 1996 while being selected as captain as a junior in 1997. Following the 1997 season, Goebbel transferred to the University of Northern Iowa, where he was the starting quarterback in 1998 and earned Gateway Conference Newcomer of the Year honors. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1998 and briefly played for the Buffalo Destroyers of the Arena Football League. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Quincy University. In 1999, Goebbel coached tight ends at the College of Wooster and the following season was named the quarterback and wide receiver coach at Tiffin University. He coached at Tiffin for two years before moving on to Quincy University, where he served as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. During those two seasons as offensive coordinator, Quincy was ranked 13th and 10th nationally in total offense.
