MIA

NORTH TERMINAL Miami International Airport’s North Terminal moved one step closer to final completion on Tuesday, July 20, with the completed renovation and re-opening of 16 gates (D-1 to D-19) in the former Concourse A, which has been re-named and is now an extension of Concourse D. North Terminal’s security checkpoint #1, which provides direct access to the 16 new gates, also opened on July 20. The eight gates closest to the checkpoint are fully operational and the additional eight will start serving flights in September when the North Terminal SkyTrain, a rooftop automated people mover system, begins service. The SkyTrain can transport passengers from one end of the mile-long concourse to the other, connecting flights within a few minutes. Since the North Terminal’s Regional Commuter Facility and its two passenger gates opened for American Eagle passengers at the end of July, only six of the facility’s 50 gates now remain to be opened next year. Additionally, MIA’s strong performance helped maintain “A” ratings and stable financial outlooks with all three major bond rating agencies for a July bond sale that is expected to be the final financing necessary to finish the airport’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). In its bond rating report for MIA in June, Fitch Ratings noted, “The airport’s strengths include a well-balanced traffic profile between origin/destination and connecting passengers that serves domestic and international travel and enhanced management oversight of the capital improvement program.” O

MD-80

RELOCATION

Odebrecht partnered with American to make possible the move of a 39-ton plane donated by American to the George T. Baker Aviation School. The job required lifting the plane from Miami International Airport over SR112 and LeJeune Road.

“Moving the airplane was truly an engineering feat, requiring extensive collaboration between American, Odebrecht and almost a dozen companies and government agencies,” said Peter Dolara, American’s Senior Vice President based in Miami. “It was a tough job, but we couldn’t be more thrilled for the students, who will get invaluable hands-on experience with a commercial aircraft.” The move took place around 1 a.m. on May 20. Miami-Dade County and airport officials had to close a runway and surrounding roads, remove fencing, and build a temporary gravel road to transport the plane to the school, located adjacent to MIA. Even before that plane was in the school, the students had already gained experience with the MD-80, prepping it for the move by taking off the wing tips and jet engines. “On behalf of the Baker students, faculty, and staff – THANK YOU! Each of your commitment to see this through was a truly remarkable experience.” Sean Gallagan - Principal, George T. Baker Aviation School. O

CULTURE PROGRAM This past May 7th marked the beginning of the Introduction to the Odebrecht Culture Program in the US. It included valuable speakers such as Board Member, Renato Baiardi and Project Executive, Lucas Prado. The Culture Program is a tool created by the Organization to help members get to know, understand and practice the Odebrecht Entrepreneurial Technology (TEO). The purpose is to make sure members know why it is important for them to develop certain Competencies and specific Characteristics so they can better succeed.

2010 MIAMI CORPORATE RUN On April 29, more than 70 of our team members joined the 20,000 people who took over the streets of Miami to participate in the 25th Annual Corporate Run, which this year benefited the American Red Cross. Congratulations to Kim Perantoni (00:24:20) and Alf Newman (00:22:40) - the 2010 Odebrecht winners. o

The Program has gotten excellent feedback from participants: “For 15 years I thought I knew TEO. I was wrong!! The information received was so valuable that it will greatly help in everyday work activities.” Sam Ballan “Beyond my expectations. Odebrecht is always beyond my expectations.” Ana Buitrago “Absolutely great program to enhance one’s maturity level and guiding oneself to be a future leader.” Kanwar Lobana “I really enjoyed this meeting. It really got me engaged in the company and TEO.” Umut Artuk The first group to participate on the Program was composed of 40 Team Members, and will have its closing on August 30th. Continuing on the road to success, a second group is already scheduled to begin the Introduction to the Odebrecht Culture Program on August 31st. The program will continue in 2011. o

LIFE

by Emílio Odebrecht

Firmly established personal relationships are the bedrock for cultural unity, team spirit and a shared commitment to both the individual and collective success in any organization.

An excellent internal climate is always the result of leaders’ attitudes and behaviors when they base their relationships with their team members (the people they lead) on sensitivity, respect, consistency, discernment, and constructive follow-up of each individual’s expected performance. The basic prerequisite for building relationships like these is the existence of a rich humanistic ingredient, whether it is present at the official or informal level. However, a favorable environment is also essential. During over 40 years of experience as a business executive, I have learned that there are no ranks in the hierarchical ladder or vertical organization charts in a leadership-based organization. Vertical structures tend to symbolize centralization and identify the presence of authority at the top of the pyramid. The power of the chairman, top executives and their direct assistants emanates from the top down. It so happens that this authority does not lie within the company. It always lies with the client. The supreme source of power in any company is its individualized client, and everyone in that company – from worker to chairman – must be at the service of that client. This is a horizontal structure, and as I have said, the commitment to service flows along the line connecting shareholders and clients. This establishes spheres of responsibility, each with its own delegated authority. It is precisely this sort of environment that produces a high degree of cooperation among teams, which will be greater and better to the extent that people are convinced they have a voice and are considered equal, while naturally respecting the relative weight of each individual’s responsibilities. For leaders who believe it is important to get to know people well, this helps them establish relationships based on discipline, which produces respect and builds trust – the solution to all the risks inherent to both formal and informal relationships. Such knowledge is a prerequisite for ensuring that leader-team member relations are freed from the bonds that formal roles and excessive pomp and ceremony impose on human relationships, and can be shaped by respectful informality. This is the best way to work when everyone shares a common aim: getting the best tangible and intangible results for the organization and its members. O

SOCIAL ACTION

BAYNANZA 2010 On April 17, nearly 8,600 volunteers charged their way to the 27 cleanup sites throughout Miami-Dade County and collectively helped to get rid of several tons of trash from the shorelines and nearby islands of Biscayne Bay. More than 20 volunteers from Odebrecht and the AirportLink project participated in the event. o

FOSTER AND ADOPTIVE PARENTS ASSOCIATION

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, Odebrecht and its joint venture partner were honored by the Miami-Dade County Foster and Adoptive Parent’s Association for toys donated to foster and adopted children during the 2008 and 2009 Holiday Season. Shamele Jenkins, President of the Board, gave a heart-felt testimonial about how the toys Odebrecht has donated in the past two years have brought joy to numerous kids and families during the holiday season. Odebrecht’s Tommy Valentine was emotional and stated “I do this because I don’t want any child to wake up and not have toys on Christmas morning.” o

CAREER EXPO On May 27, Miami Jackson High School hosted its “Career Exposition, From College to Careers Exploring our Future,” to acquaint students with various career opportunities available and the different roles they can play in society. Odebrecht was represented by volunteers from the AirportLink (Metrorail) project – Elizabeth Lamborghini, Mark Poropat, Alex Brito and Jacqueline Contney. Many of the students who take part in the school’s Architectural Drafting Program were extremely interested in learning about Odebrecht, its projects its our people.
