visitor’s first impression of your home will be formed long before the front door is even opened. It goes without saying that a sweeping gravel drive and a columned doorway with beautiful plant pots will make a very different impression to a cobbled path through an unkept lawn area. Let us have a look at what can be done to give your home that all important first impression and what estate agents like to call the kerb appeal. For years, entrance and driveway gates were possibly the ugliest part of many houses. Even the added technology of being able to open them from the comfort of the driving seat did nothing for them aesthetically. Why not invest instead in beautifully crafted, large wooden doors, which show off the wood’s natural grain and characteristics, or perhaps an ornate wrought iron design will suit your property more. Terracotta pots of all shapes and sizes will increase depth and texture. You can even add your own touch by painting them in bold splashes of colours. And finally, for those who work from home why not consider a simple wooden cabin as a home office, perhaps with wi-fi and a coffee machine? Whatever your fancy, somewhere to escape to sometimes is just what we need. n

Just adding a little movement to your life can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, improve joint stability, improve your range of movement and help maintain flexibility as you age. But possibly most importantly of all. excercise will reduce stress. Look for small ways to walk more. When you get the mail, take a walk around the block or take the dog for an extra outing each day. General housework will use an amazing amount of calories as will working in the garden, raking leaves or sweeping the terrace. These kinds of activities may not be ‘vigorous’ exercise, but they keep you moving which is the main aim. Creating a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to mean drastic changes. In fact, drastic changes almost always lead to failure. Making small changes in how you live each day can lead to big rewards. This comes as a bit of a surprise, because to my eyes, the orange paint really adds to the car’s kerb appeal, and picks out the Discovery’s neat lines far more successfully than the more muted colours you usually see. Equally impressive is the

Discovery’s surprising agility on the road, while the low noise levels make it an effortless long-distance cruiser. Yet it’s the feeling of security it gives you in adverse weather that’s really impressive, and not just the four-wheel-drive traction and highset driving position. Now after 3 months in our hands, the Discovery had proven its worth in virtually all conditions, but it never ventured much further off road than a gravel car park. Given its impressive rugged credentials, that seemed like a waste. So I booked myself in for a half day’s offroad driving tuition at one of the brand’s nine Experience centres around the UK. Ahora, tras 3 meses en nuestras manos, el Discovery ha demostrado su valía en prácticamente todas las condiciones, aunque nunca se alejó mucho de la carretera más que a un estacionamiento de grava. Dadas sus robustas e impresionantes credenciales, eso parecía un desperdicio, así que me reservé media jornada para conducir fuera de la carretera en uno de los nueve centros de prueba de la marca en todo el Reino Unido. Opté por un viaje a Eastnor Castle en Herefordshire, que tiene cientos de kilómetros de pistas en una finca de 5.000 acres. Antes de salir, fui guiado a través del sistema Terrain Response del coche, con sus ajustes de control de tracción para fango, surcos, rocas y nieve. Luego, entramos en vías fangosas y encontramos nuestro primer obstáculo: un descenso viscoso, casi vertical. Before setting off, I was guided through the car’s Terrain Response system, with its traction control settings for Mud, Ruts, Rocks and Snow. Then we hit the muddy tracks, and met our first obstacle: a slimy, near-vertical descent. I voted for turning around, but my instructor Simon calmly urged me to edge forward while setting the hill descent control speed. Amazingly, the Discovery clawed its way down with barely a hint of a slide. And when the time came to go up a similarly steep slope, it scrabbled up effortlessly. At the end of our session I was left staggered by the Land Rover’s abilities, and surprised at how much fun you can have going slowly It also reminded me of the Discovery’s huge spread of abilities; it can switch seamlessly between MPV, estate car, executive express and rugged off-roader. I won’t miss the car’s thirst for diesel, but in all other respects it has been a talented family wagon. As we handed back our test vehicle I couldn’t help but think the Discovery’s new owner will be getting an extraordinarily capable allrounder and I envy their purchase. nuggled in the foothills of the Sierra Almijaras is the enchanting village of Cómpeta. The village is at an altitude of 636m, 49km from Málaga and 18km from the coast. Its location at the apex of the triangle made up of the coast between Algarrobo and Torrox Costa, with roads leading from both, provides a perfect base for touring and enjoying the great outdoors. The roads from the costa wriggle up the mountain with Maroma (2066 m) looming in the distance providing a spectacular backdrop. Both roads to the village are good roads and en route you can stop off at Torrox village for a tapas in a typical Spanish atmosphere. e have all seen Spain from the air as we fly into Malaga but how many of us have seen it from a light aircraft with just 4 seats? We recently met up with Ignacio Gil, the flight instructor at ‘Real Aeroclub de Málaga en Aéroclub de la Axarquia’, for a 1 hour flight experience. The trip was to coincide with our son Harrison’s 18th birthday, so we kept it a surprise from him until the very last minute. The look on his face as we arrived at the airfield and the planned mornings activity became apparent to him, was just fantastic. Ignacio took the time to show us around our plane for the morning, a 4 seater Piper Warrior III, just one of the planes at his disposal at the aeroclub. He explained to us in very simple terms exactly how the plane flies and how it is controlled in the air. He took great care to make sure that Harrison 52 OCIO magazine

fully understood, which as it was his birthday, we thought was very considerate… little did we know what was to come! After the usual safety/security checks and obligatory photo session, we took our seats with Ignacio and Harrison seated in the front with us immediately behind in the rear seats. After a further, short explanation, Harrison was charged with taxiing the plane to the runway for take off. Then the big surprise came, and not just for Harrison. Ignacio announced that Harrison was to pilot the plane as we take off. Of course we were in a dual controlled plane so Ignacio would always be able to take control should it become necessary. With no time for the rear seated passengers to question the decision, we were rolling along at speed and under Ignacio’s instruction, Harrison took the plane to the air, we were up, up and away…WOW!

I cannot put into words how exhilarating the flight was, and how safe it was, even though Harrison was flying a plane for the first time in his life. Ignacio was monitoring and teaching Harrison the whole time, whilst making sure the flight was also fun for him too - how coud it not be! The landing was the only time Ignacio took charge of the controls during the whole flight, explaining that the landing required a little more experience than Harrison had at the moment. Safely back on hard ground the smile on Harrison’s face was still evident as we said our goodbyes to Ignacio, vowing that we would return for more in the future. Ignacio was a perfect host, instructor and gentleman, creating an unforgettable experience not only for Harrison, but for us as well. We cannot wait to return and repeat the experience.

INFORMATION: The Real Aeroclub de Malaga does not operate commercial flights. It operates as a flying club for pleasure flights, flying lessons and of course the flying experience as we enjoyed. odos hemos visto España desde el aire mientras volábamos por encima de Málaga, pero ¿cuántos de nosotros la hemos visto desde un avión ligero con tan sólo 4 asientos? Recientemente nos reunimos con Ignacio Gil, el instructor de vuelo en el Real Aeroclub de Málaga en Aeródromo de la Axarquía, para experimentar 1 hora de vuelo. El viaje se hizo coincidiendo con el 18º cumpleaños de nuestro hijo de Harrison, por lo que mantuvimos la sorpresa hasta el último minuto. La expresión de su rostro cuando llegamos a la pista de aterrizaje, y la actividad planificada por la mañana, hizo evidente en él, que era algo simplemente fantástico.

Ignacio se tomó su tiempo para mostrarnos nuestro avión por la mañana, un Piper Warrior III de 4 plazas. Disponen de tres aviones y un biplano antiguo de 1.953 la Bücker 1.131. Él nos explicó en términos muy simples cómo vuela exactamente un avión y la forma en que se controla en el aire. Él se aseguró con sumo cuidado de que Harrison entendiera completamente, y como era su cumpleaños, nos pareció que esto fue muy considerado de su parte ... ¡poco sabíamos de lo que se nos avecinaba! Después los habituales advertencias de seguridad y sesión de fotos obligatoria, tomamos nuestros asientos, con Ignacio y Harrison sentados a los mandos, y nosotros inmediatamente detrás en los asientos traseros. Después de una breve explicación adicional, Harrison fue rodando hasta la pista de despegue. A continuación, vino la gran sorpresa, y no sólo para Harrison. Ignacio anunció que Harrison iba a probar hacer el despegue del avión. Ignacio siempre con posibilidad de tomar el mando del avión dado que dispone de doble mando continuo. Sin tiempo para los pasajeros sentados detrás a cuestionar la decisión, ya estábamos rodando a gran velocidad y bajo las instrucciones de Ignacio, Harrison llevó el avión al aires, estábamos arriba, arriba y lejos ... ¡GUAU! No puedo expresar con palabras lo estimulante que fue el vuelo, y lo seguro, a pesar de que Harrison estaba haciendo volar un avión por primera vez en su vida. Ignacio estaba monitoreando y enseñando a Harrison todo el tiempo, además de asegurarse de que el vuelo era al mismo tiempo muy divertido para él - ¡Cómo no podía serlo! En el aterrizaje fue la única vez en la que Ignacio se hizo

cargo de los mandos durante todo el vuelo, y explicó que el aterrizaje requiere un poco más de experiencia de la que Harrison tenía hasta este momento. De vuelta a tierra firme permanecía aún una sonrisa en la cara Harrison que perduraba cuando nos despedimos de Ignacio, prometiendo que volveríamos en el futuro. Ignacio fué un anfitrión, instructor y caballero perfecto, creador de una experiencia inolvidable, no sólo para Harrison, sino para nosotros también. No podemos esperar para poder volver y repetir la experiencia. INFORMACIÓN: El Real Aeroclub de Málaga no opera vuelos comerciales. Funciona como un club de vuelo para vuelos de placer, lecciones y, por supuesto, la experiencia de volar por volar como disfrute. pain is the world’s largest exporter of fresh strawberries, annually shipping approximately 285 thousand tons of this Spanish delicacy to international destinations in Europe and beyond. Additionally, it is the second largest source of this berry in the world, thanks in no small part to the innovation and dedication of strawberry producers in Andalusia, the region that is responsible for 90% of all Spanish strawberries. The market success of Spanish strawberries is unparalleled. Not only is Spain the second largest producer of this fruit, but it has also dominated international markets as the world’s leading strawberry exporter for more than five years. In terms of export destinations, figures show that the most significant markets by far are European, with Germany and France accounting for the lion’s share of around 90 thousand tons and 74 thousand tons, respectively.
