The beaches and locations of the Outer Banks can be the perfect backdrop for your wedding events. We are lucky to have some of the most unique venues on the East Coast, including lighthouses, miles of gorgeous beaches, event homes, piers, amazing restaurants, and top-rated golf courses. Our mission is to help you use them to create the wedding of your dreams! Each year brings more excitement for us here at the Outer Banks Wedding Association. We are thrilled to announce that we have won a Summit International Award for Outer Banks Bride Magazine! We have also won a Summit Award for our social media campaign, which includes our Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest accounts, as well as our blog. Although we are now an award-winning association, we decided to do some market research to learn more about the popularity of the Outer Banks among places to get married. Our findings further solidified that the Outer Banks is a premier wedding destination. Our Wedding Welcome Center, which opened last year, has also been a great success. The association continues to grow, and we found it was important to have staff to be available to brides, as well as to handle our day-to-day business. Our Welcome Center is the ideal place for brides to meet with our staff to gather information, pick up the latest copy of Outer Banks Bride Magazine, and find wedding vendor information. We are
proud to stand behind nearly 300 wedding professionals who are eager to help you begin planning. Whatever your wedding dream includes, we have vendors who can cater to your every whim. The Wedding Welcome Center is located in Nags Head at Milepost 10 and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We encourage you to make a point to visit us the next time you are at the beach! This year we will be hosting our 16th Wedding Weekend and Expo to showcase all that the Outer Banks has to offer for your wedding events. The luck of the Irish played a hand in matchmaking this couple. When the Irish groom met his later bride-to-be at a Saint Patrick’s Day get-together, it seemed too good to be true. “As cheesy as it sounds,” said Catie, “I knew from the moment I saw him that I would spend the rest of my life with him.” For the next two weeks, she was afraid to check her voicemail fearing no message from Eugene. When she finally mustered the courage to check it, she was relieved to hear his voice asking her on a date.

When it came to planning the pinnacle day of their journey thus far, the Outer Banks was the place held special in their hearts. “Of all of the beautiful and awesome places we’ve seen together, the Outer Banks was a special getaway for us and our families,” said Catie.

Less than a year into their relationship, Catie and Eugene decided to continue as a long-distance couple. Although hard on them for the two years it endured, the trips they took together made it worth the struggle. Catie and Eugene would often visit the Napa Valley wineries whenever she visited him in San
Francisco. When Eugene was finally able to move back to New York to be near Catie, they were able to drive cross-country together. They shared in the awe-inspiring sights along the way with breath-taking experiences like viewing the stoic faces of Mount Rushmore to the relaxing hot springs in Yellowstone. When the time came to pop the question, Eugene whisked Catie back to Napa Valley for the proposal after six exciting years of dating.

Growing up in New Jersey, Catie vacationed with her family on the Outer Banks most summers. She remembered these as some of the most precious memories she has now that her four siblings are living all over the states. She and Eugene began making this tradition their own and spending some time during the summer in Duck with a few of their closest friends. Just like Catie, Eugene fell in love with the area and it easily became the location of choice for their wedding day. “To get to spend the greatest day of our lives together and share the beauty and magic of the Outer Banks with our family and friends was the best gift we ever could have received on our wedding day,” said Catie. A wedding brings families together, letting them catch up on all that they have missed in each other’s lives. Catie and Eugene wanted to take full advantage of this rare opportunity to bring all of their close friends and family to the Outer Banks for an entire week of wedding celebrations and special family time. From watching friends cook breakfast with their kids to hearing the chatter from aunts, uncles and cousins, Catie and Eugene took in every moment in hopes of freezing these images in their memory for a lifetime. Instead of champagne at their reception, they shared their travels with attendees by toasting their special day with Cakebread wine made in the Cakebread Vineyards of Napa Valley, where Eugene proposed.

In January of 2012, the couple visited the Outer Banks Wedding Association’s Wedding Weekend, where all of the planning got started. Catie knew that she wanted the day to reflect “sophisticated elegance and classic beauty.” From talking with their chosen vendors to hours spent on Pinterest, Catie slowly brought her desired look into one event. From the “here comes the bride” wooden sign to the pieces that made the reception centerpieces, Catie was able to put her personal touch on every part of the wedding. This was probably Catie’s favorite part of the planning process. “I had a lot of fun creating the overall design of my wedding and doing the DIY projects with my mom, sisters and friends,” said Catie. “It led to a lot of very fun weekends together,” she continued. Catie’s vision was reached with perfection while all of her loved ones were gathered around her and her new husband, which is exactly what the lucky couple had hoped for this day. Catie and Eugene have now moved from New York and live in her hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey and plan to continue the tradition of summers on the Outer Banks for years to come.

From the Bride: “Cakebread Wine was used instead of a champagne toast as a special tribute to getting engaged at Cakebread Vineyard in Napa, CA. We chose to get married in OBX because I went on family vacations there growing up and Eugene & I now continue the tradition and take summer vacations there with our best friends and their children. We rented the Wild Horse home, and invited our friends and family to come vacation for a week and stay in the home with us, then at the end of the week we got married. It was a week that we will remember for the rest of our lives, not only because we celebrated our marriage but because we were able to spend a full week with everyone we love together under one roof. There are not many times in life to ever have that opportunity. We have amazing family and friends and cherish every second of that week.� - Catie

All of the large milestones in this couple’s relationship- the “I love you,” the proposal- took place on a beach so it only made sense for the couple to tie the knot on one too! With Tim spending part of his military career as a helicopter pilot, it only seemed fitting to fly himself and his bride to their wedding unbeknownst to their guests. Tim and Sandra met online and hit it off from the very beginning. They love to travel, visiting Costa Rica, Afghanistan and beyond.

Ryan and I really enjoyed shooting Courtney and Tony’s wedding! The house in Corolla was beautiful. The weather looked a little questionable and it even sprinkled a little but we were able to get some great outdoor shots. We really enjoyed our time with this couple, and I even ran into them the next day at one of my favorite local restaurants, Food Dudes. We wish them the best.

Devon and Sean opted to think out of the box and have a sunrise wedding for their close family and friends. The ceremony began in near darkness on the beach at 5:50 am, with the sun rising as they said their vows to each other. All of the DIY elements in this wedding made it truly unique. From the custom-made wood invitations and homemade signage to the lawn games and handmade oversized Jenga game, the couples’ personal touch could be noticed in every detail of the wedding.

Stefanie and Jeremy simply wanted to get married in a beautiful setting surrounded by their friends and family. Having a young son, Jackson, helped this couple focus on the details that were important to them. Jeremy is a chef, so great food was a must. During Expo weekend last year, Stefanie and Jeremy were able to quickly pull all of their vendors together with their planner’s help. Once the vendors were selected, Stefanie and Jeremy let those vendors do what they do best – create a picture perfect wedding day.

Valentine and Josh didn’t have to think twice about the location of their wedding. To achieve the rustic southern feel, Valentine and her sister spent most of the engagement year collecting glass bottles that would be used to create unique centerpieces. From the expo in January of 2013 to the day of the wedding in April, Megan only had three months to plan this gorgeous affair! The wedding of Megan and Nathan was an intimate affair held at the majestic Oceanfront Event home “Station One,” managed by Corolla Classic Vacations attended by close friends and family. On that special late spring day, the weather cooperated for a beautiful beachfront ceremony held in front of the Pine Island home followed by a scrumptious seafood buffet, dancing and a night filled with precious memories.

Becca was diagnosed with Guillan Barre Syndrome in October of 2011 where she was hospitalized and lost all ability to use her legs or speak. Throughout the process of hospitalization and healing, Casey never left her side. With hard work and the loyalty of her loved ones, Becca was able to learn to walk, eat and speak again. The experience brought the couple to the realization that they never wanted to be apart, and Casey proposed in November 2012. Becca was able to walk down the aisle and repeat her vows to the love of her life as a beautiful bride in April of 2013.

Sean and Heather worked as a true team during the planning stages of this wedding. The lovebirds split the duties between them to ensure all of the details were perfect for their big day. All of Sean and Heather’s friends and family were in attendance, including the couple’s fur baby, Monty. Although rain made an appearance during the ceremony, the happy couple did not let it put a damper on their day. They simply embraced the weather, which allowed for beautiful lighting for sunset shots on the sound.

Many couples refer to fate when speaking of how they met and fell in love. Most believe fate plays a hand in the choosing of our soul mates but many wouldn’t describe your wedding details being decided by fate. Our 2013 Dream Wedding winners, Lauren and Tim, use the word fate frequently when speaking of their experience with their Dream Wedding here on the Outer Banks. “I have been vacationing every year on the Outer Banks since I was a little girl. Now, it is a place where Tim and I vacation together with our families,” Lauren explains. “Tim proposed to me on a sunset beach in Kill Devil Hills and the Outer Banks represents some of the greatest moments of our lives. Some of the happiest, funniest and most enjoyable memories have been created for us here, so it seemed completely natural for us to marry in a place that symbolizes family, love and memories for us.” While Lauren and Tim had yet to set a wedding date, one thing was certain, they envisioned the Outer Banks as their wedding destination. Having decided on the destination, Lauren and Tim opted to come to the 2013 Wedding Weekend and Expo to get a jumpstart on their planning, never imagining what fate had in store for them. “When we put the Dream Wedding tickets into the spinner, I felt a weight had been lifted for me. I knew whatever the outcome, it was up to fate and whatever was meant to be would happen,” said Lauren. In December of 2011, Lauren’s mom passed away after losing her battle with breast cancer. While many brides rely on the advice and love from their mothers, the reality of planning this exciting and life-changing event without her mother seemed unbearable. Having pushed back their wedding date due to Lauren’s loss, this year’s Expo was nothing more than an idea-gathering trip; a way to get ahead in the planning process. “I had gone back and forth on whether to enter the giveaway but ultimately we decided that it was an opportunity we just couldn’t pass up,” she said. Lauren had no inclination or feelings that she would win. Watching the crowds gather, a bride rarely lets her mind entertain the idea that it could be her, and

Lauren wasn’t any different when fate stepped in. With each passing bride you think, “It isn’t going to be me,” remembers Lauren. “When I heard my name, I was in complete shock. I couldn’t speak a word or even scream. I just couldn’t believe it. My mom always used to say ‘God works in mysterious ways’ and I truly believe this to be true.” She continued, “I know the struggle I would have had planning my wedding on my own without my mom and I just felt at that moment that she did this for me. She gave me this gift, this amazing gift so that I wouldn’t have to do it without her.” In the days and weeks that followed, the Dream Wedding couple met the Dream Team, a collection of some of the most talented wedding vendors on the Outer Banks. The planning process was in full swing, spearheaded by Kerri Catino-Nason of The Proper Setting, one of the regions most experienced wedding planners. Planning everything from engagement pictures to the couple’s Stand Up Paddle Board session, “Kerri left no detail to chance,” explained Lauren. “The persistent planning that Kerri did for our event allowed us to have complete confidence that everything would turn out as I dreamed.” It was important to the couple that each detail of the day translated into a personalized love story about them and their loved ones. Catino-Nason worked tirelessly with our couple to ensure their $100,000 wedding giveaway was truly a dream come true. Envisioning a formal black and white wedding on the beach, Lauren wanted both elegance and the organic simplicity that comes with a beach wedding. “Kerri filled the void that not having a mother to plan my wedding with left,” said Lauren. “I knew that our wedding day would be perfect because she was involved.” With sweeping views of the Atlantic and the unspoiled beaches of Cape Hatteras, Lauren’s dream of an elegant beach wedding on the Outer Banks would be fulfilled in Avon. “There’s nothing like a beach wedding,” said Lauren. “The serene coastal waters are a beautiful backdrop to any wedding, no matter the style.” There could not have been a more ideal setting to host Lauren and Tim’s black and white soiree than the picturesque and quintessential Hatteras Island venue, the Beach Klub at Koru Village. Kim and Wes Stetson, the creative minds behind Holiday House Weddings and Events, carried the traditional damask design element throughout the ceremony beginning with a

we wanted to capture on our wedding day and delivered photographs we will treasure for years to come.” As many brides will attest, it’s important to trust your vendors and establish a relationship with them, especially when planning a destination wedding. “Tim and I felt completely blessed for the chance to be given a beautiful wedding we could never have given ourselves, and blessed to have been able to share the day with the family and friends we love the most.” Lauren’s fondest memories are of time spent with family and friends on the Outer Banks and her dream of a classically elegant wedding on the beach became a reality thanks to the talented team of wedding vendors. This celebration was a grand finale to a week filled with classic Outer Banks activities like Stand Up Paddle Boarding with REAL Watersports, golfing at Nags Head Golf Links and a sound front rehearsal dinner hosted at Affairs at Austin Creek. The ultimate

table runners and toppers, while outfitting each table with a damask lamp, lush table arrangements and mercury glass containers, all romantically lit by candlelight. Wanting to showcase their fondness for the Outer Banks, Lauren requested Outer Banks town names, along with a history of the town, be framed and placed at individual tables. Creating beautiful bouquets wrapped with lace from Lauren’s mother’s wedding dress was just one of countless details included in this dream day. “The Stetsons of Holiday House Weddings and Events delivered a ceremony and reception we could never have dreamt on our own,” remembered Lauren. “The sky was the limit on what they were willing to do for us. We couldn’t have been happier to see our dream of a classic wedding come to life.” Capturing the day’s emotions was the talented husband and wife team at Genevieve Stewart Photography & Film. “Genevieve and Chad listened to all of our ideas for the memories

stunning white sand scroll down the aisle and delicate paper damask cones filled with flowers serving as chair markers. The true statement piece at the ceremony, however, was the custom designed damask topped canopy with a crystal curtain backdrop and hanging blooms, as well as a beautiful silver altar table. Each damask detail was meticulously tied together to bring to life Lauren and Tim’s vision. After professing their faithful vows among family and friends, the celebration moved to the exquisitely decorated 4,000 square foot pavilion at the Beach Klub. Guests enjoyed cocktails under specialty lighting, which created a romantic atmosphere around the pool, before heading into the reception area. The focal point of the reception was the Italian bistro lighting and a jaw-dropping custom clear and black crystal chandelier over the dance floor. Leaving no detail overlooked, Holiday House continued to carry the damask theme throughout the pavilion by creating custom

Information on Obtaining a North Carolina Marriage License North Carolina Law If you are going to be married in North Carolina, you must obtain a North Carolina marriage license prior to your ceremony. Marriage licenses are issued by the Register of Deeds office of any county in North Carolina. You do not have to obtain your marriage license in the same county in which you will be married. A marriage license issued in any county in North Carolina may be used in any other county in the state. If both the man and woman to be married are at least 18 years of age, you may obtain your license by personally appearing before the Register of Deeds with proof of identification and eligibility to be married. In most counties the acceptable form of identification is a government issued picture ID car which contains your date of birth and your social security card. If you are under the age of 18 you should contact the Register of Deeds office where you wish to obtain your license for those requirements. If either person is divorced, you should contact the Register of Deeds office where you will obtain your license to determine that county’s requirement for proof of your eligibility to be married. The Register of Deeds charges a $60 fee for the license and many do not accept personal checks or credit cards. There is no pre-marital physical or blood test requirements, and once your license is issued you may use it immediately (no waiting period), but no more than 60 days from the date it is issued. A marriage ceremony may be performed by an officiant who is an ordained minister of any religious denomination or minister authorized by a church, or a magistrate. The ceremony must also be witnessed by two persons who area at least 18 years of age. It is the responsibility of the officiant or magistrate to have the completed marriage license returned to the Register of Deeds office that issued the license within 10 days after the ceremony. As you peruse the pages of this magazine, you may be surprised to see images of a vintage motel, first time bride in her 60’s or a same sex couple among the pages of white flowing dresses and pink blush flowers. With the emergence of social media sites like Pinterest and a public that is increasingly open to celebrating their wedding with a no hold bars attitude, nontraditional weddings and vow renewals are on the rise. No longer is the bride with the pink blush flowers the only one saying “I do” on the Outer Banks. Today, you’ll see weddings, vow renewals and commitment ceremonies of all styles right here within our magazine and on our blog. The Outer Banks Wedding Association’s goal is to provide all couples with the tools and ideas to celebrate their joy and journey here in our beautiful coastal area. There are so many options here to find your style and our inspiration is not limited to the twenty-somethings traditionally seen in the bridal magazines.

The Sea Foam motel was the favorite for first time bride, Marriette. In true southern fashion, all the motel goers were invited to watch the ceremony from their balconies, the reception complete with picnic baskets and pastel Adirondack chairs. Sanctuary Vineyards were the perfect place for one couple who decided to have their ceremony on the Outer Banks. It offered the trendy vineyard and barn setting popular in other areas of the country, just a short drive from the beaches of the Outer Banks.

Susan and Bob opted for the tranquility of the beach for their vow renewal ceremony. After Bob was diagnosed with cancer, the couple decided to host an intimate ceremony on the beach with close friends and family to celebrate their love. Months after their journey to our coastal shores, Bob passed from this world to his eternal home. We are blessed that the North Carolina coast will always share a special place in the hearts of Susan and Bob’s loved ones.
Cheryl Pigott is an accomplished writer and award-winning publisher from North Carolina. She grew up visiting the Outer Banks as a teen in her little green VW. Now, she shares her OBX love with her husband, Andy, and four children by visiting the four-wheeled drive beaches of Corova and Hatteras in a much larger SUV.

Essential Tips For a Memorable Wedding Day Many times, brides can get bogged down with all of the logistics of planning their picture-perfect wedding. The Outer Banks Wedding Association and its vendors are here to help make the planning process and that special day as stress-free and memorable as possible. Here are a few tips to help make your first day as Mr. & Mrs. as magical as possible.
• Keep your vendors and bridal party members organized with a timed itinerary telling them where to be and when. This will help ensure everything flows smoothly in a timely manner. Allow some wiggle room in your itinerary- you can’t possibly have it scheduled exactly down to the minute! • Have a Wedding Day Emergency Kit on-hand for any uh-oh’s that happen throughout the day. Band-aids for blisters, clear nail polish for manicure knicks and Tide-To-Go pens will surprisingly come in handy and keep the dreaded Bridezilla at bay.

• Ask your caterer (and dessert baker) to set two to-go plates aside for you and your new husband to enjoy when you retreat to your honeymoon suite. You’ll be so busy enjoying your guests and dancing the night away, you may forget to eat! • Hire a coordinator to take care of the day-of tasks that you won’t have time to handle. You will want to focus on the fun, special moments throughout the day, not what vendor needs to be where!
