China reduced its extreme poverty rate from 84 percent in 1981 to 13 percent in 2008 and lifted 662 million people out of poverty. Although extreme poverty occurs mostly in rural areas, urban slums also have high poverty rates. Preliminary survey-based estimates indicate that the Millennium Development Goal of halving poverty from its 1990 level by 2015 has been achieved at the global level in 2010.
