Letter from the Headmaster

Dear Oakridge Parents, Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. Whether your family is new to The Oakridge School or returning for another year, we thank you for entrusting your children to our dedicated team. Since 1979, the Oakridge faculty has inspired bight, college-bound students to seek excellence in academics, arts, and athletics. This mission, along with the partnerships formed between families and the school, serves as the foundation for a successful Oakridge experience. I trust you will find this “Guide to Getting Involved to be a helpful resource. The Oakridge Development Office has created it to inform you of the numerous opportunities for parents to engage in our community while simultaneously partnering with the school. By participating in one or more of these capacities, you will assist the school in achieving its goals and have opportunities to establish important parent networks. Please review this booklet to discover meaningful ways to become involved at Oakridge. If you have questions about finding your place to serve, please contact the Development Office. Thank you, in advance, for your support. Go Owls! Sincerely,

Jonathan M. Kellam Headmaster

Overview

The Oakridge School The Oakridge School, established in 1979, is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school with a total enrollment of approximately 900 students in the Early Childhood Center (ECC) through grade 12. Located in Arlington, Texas, The Oakridge School attracts students from thirty-two cities and ten foreign countries. The school, with its dedicated and experienced faculty and a superior academic program emphasizing personal development, aims to provide an education of highest quality to academically qualified students, to motivate each student to perform at his or her maximum potential, and to prepare students for a life of achievement and participation in society. The Oakridge School is a non-profit institution governed by a Board of Regents. The school is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) and holds membership in the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). With the acquisition of forty-seven and a half acres adjacent to the school, Oakridge has embarked on a capital campaign to build a first-class state-of-the-art Athletic Complex and has secured the future for Oakridge at its present location.

Overview

Our Mission To inspire students to seek their full potential in academics, the arts, and athletics in a challenging and nurturing environment that cultivates social responsibility, mutual respect and personal integrity.

Our Vision To attain national recognition as a college preparatory school that provides educational excellence grounded in responsible character development and ethical leadership.

Philosophy We believe the role of The Oakridge School is to provide a challenging educational program that emphasizes the total development of each child, encompassing basic skills as well as cultural, emotional and physical development, which prepares students for higher education and life. We believe an environment that employs a variety of teaching techniques and learning activities best enables each student to achieve as an individual and as a member of a group. We believe an orderly environment stressing personal and academic self-discipline provides an atmosphere most conducive to success. We believe in academic excellence, in high moral and ethical standards, in honor, in the respect of the opinions and the rights of others, in the realization and acceptance of the consequences of an individual’s actions, and in the pursuit of knowledge as a lifelong experience. We believe the graduates of The Oakridge School should be men and women of good character who have developed a healthy respect for self, and awareness of the privileges and obligations of citizenship, and a keen sense of empathy for and responsibility to fellow human beings.

How can you get involved? How can you help? The answer is two-fold. Every school needs an active parent body in order to thrive. The Oakridge School uses an online registration process for our volunteers in order to make our process more efficient, cost effective and timely. Volunteers register online for all Parents’ Club and school-sponsored volunteer opportunities beginning in the late summer and throughout the school year.

How to Register: 1. Go to www.theoakridgeschool.org/parentsclub 2. Click Volunteer Here 3. Enter your contact information 4. Select the volunteer opportunities of interest 5. Submit Serving as a parent volunteer is vital to enriching your child’s education at The Oakridge School. We hope you will take an active part in your child’s education by attending school events, volunteering to help out with projects when needed, sponsoring activities, or joining organizations that work for the school’s benefit, such as the Oakridge Parents’ Club and The Owl Booster Club. But perhaps most importantly, volunteering is an expression of your interest in and commitment to, your child’s daily life. Please visit www.theoakridgeschool.org/ parentsclub for more information on how you can get involved this year!

Oakridge Annual Fund

Philanthropy at The Oakridge School begins with the Annual Fund Gifts from all members of our community are significant to The Oakridge School. They support its mission, people and programs. Your contribution to The Oakridge School Annual Fund is key to the school’s current and future success. The Oakridge School Annual Fund is the FUNDRAISING PRIORITY and plays a critical role in supporting the needs of the students, the campus and its programs. The Annual Fund COVERS THE GAP between what it costs to educate a child at Oakridge and to operate the school. TUITION ONLY PAYS FOR 95% of operating costs. We need to make up the difference to pay the total expenses for: • • • • •

Super Supper & Auction

Saturday, February 28, 2015 Omni Hotel Fort Worth The Super Supper and Auction has been a part of The Oakridge School since it was founded in 1979. This annual event generates funds for campus improvements and educational enhancements across all grade levels. This gala includes a festive dinner and dancing; online, silent, big board and live auctions; a tuition raffle; and much more. Parents, staff, and friends volunteer time and resources to ensure this evening’s success. This year’s theme, The Disco Ball, will be more exciting than ever. We will kick off the Online Auction in December and offer a “Free Ride” by raffling 2015-2016 tuition for one student. As you know, the money raised at the annual Super Supper & Auction is an important factor to the top-notch educational experience we have all come to enjoy and expect as part of the Oakridge tradition. We hope that you will become involved on whatever level you can – donate items to the auctions, join one of the numerous committees and give of your time and talents, reserve tables and seats for the ultimate event, or purchase items on-line. In any capacity, we welcome your involvement in this Oakridge tradition. For more information on how you can be involved in this year’s Super Supper and Auction, please contact Angela Kasko at 817-308-0529 or the Development Office, 817.451.4994 ext. 2785.

The Owl Booster Club The Oakridge Athletic Booster Club, The Owl Club, is made up of individuals and businesses that support the school’s Athletic Programs. The funds raised are used to supplement existing sports programs and benefit all Oakridge athletes, both girls and boys. A group of dedicated volunteers ensures the Booster Club concession stand is open for home games as a service to our athletes, families and the visiting teams. The Owl Club even has a mobile concession cart providing service to the spectators in the bleachers. The “Spirit Shack” is open at each home football game and proceeds of these sales are used to purchase needed equipment and necessities for our athletic teams and physical education programs.

The Owl Club also provides food, volunteers and/or support for: • • • • • • •

The Owl Club Golf Classic

The Owl Club Golf Classic Monday, May 18, 2015 Waterchase Golf Club Two Tee Times: 8:00 am & 1:30 pm Each spring The Owl Club hosts the annual Oakridge Golf Classic. This fundraising event is an annual tradition at Oakridge and helps raise funds for improvements and additions to the athletic programs at the school. Proceeds from the tournament go to The Owl Booster Club to pay for equipment such as bleachers, scoring tables, goal posts and other items. Because of the success of last year’s tournament, the Booster Club was able to make improvements to the baseball and basketball programs and support the Oakridge Athletic Complex campaign as well as The Oakridge School Endowment fund. The tournament gives parents and friends of the school an opportunity to support the athletic department, as well as have a good time. Many golfers enjoy a relaxing day of golf, while others are very competitive hoping for a 1st place win and the chance to have their name engraved on the prestigious Broadus Cup! The event concludes with an Awards Ceremony, dinner and prizes. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Ryan Worthington 817.239.9811 or Matt Worthington, 817.296.0862 or the Development Office at 817.451.4994 ext. 2785.

The Oakridge Athletic Complex THE OAKRIDGE ATHLETIC COMPLEX This is an exciting time in the history of our school. Amazing things have happened when the Oakridge community has worked together for the good of the children and the mission of the School. In 2011, the Board of Regents adopted a new strategic plan which included a continued commitment to the ongoing development of the Oakridge Athletic Complex. The next phase of the Complex development will be the construction of the new baseball and softball complex which will be built east of the tennis courts. We are embarking on an exciting campaign to “FINISH THE FRONT and we are counting on YOU for your philanthropic investment!

FINISH THE FRONT CAMPAIGN DETAILS A total investment of approximately $3 million will be required to construct the Baseball/ Softball Complex. The project will include fully equipped baseball and softball facilities and an additional concession stand building with restrooms that will serve both the Tennis Center and the Baseball and Softball Complex. This phase will also include the construction of significant infrastructure consisting of the extension of the utilities: water, sewer, and electricity; the main east and west road with additional parking; an eastern entrance off Pioneer Parkway; and pedestrian walkways.

If you are interested in a naming opportunity, please contact Michele Cole, Director of Development or Andy Broadus, President. Through your philanthropic support, the Oakridge athletic program will achieve even greater levels of excellence. Together, we will better serve our student-athletes. We invite you to become a part of this legacy by becoming more than you are today, by becoming part of this vision of spirit – by becoming one of the “Greatest Names in Sports.” For more information, please contact Dr. Michele Cole, Director of Development, 817.451.4994 x2768 or Mr. Andy Broadus, President, 817.457.6683.
