8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Introduction Dear friends, forty days ago we celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we recall the day on which he was presented in the Temple, when he was offered to the Father and shown to his people. As a sign of his coming among us, his mother was purified, as we now come to him for cleansing. In their old age Simeon and Anna recognized him as their Lord, as we today sing of his glory. In this eucharist, we celebrate both the joy of his coming and his searching judgement, looking back to the day of his birth and forward to the coming days of his passion.

Processional Hymn*

Hymn

1. When candles are lighted on Candlemas Day the dark is behind us, and spring’s on the way. A glory dawns in every dark place, the light of Christ, the fullness of grace. 2. The kings have departed, the shepherds have gone, the child and his parents are left on their own. 3. They go to the temple, obeying the law, and offer two pigeons, the gift of the poor. 4. But Anna and Simeon recognize there the Christ-child who came at the turn of the year. 5. The old who have suffered and waited so long see hope for the world as they welcome the young. 6. They gaze at God’s wonderful answer to prayer, the joy of the Jews and the Gentiles’ desire. 7. They see before Mary a heart-piercing grief, but trust is complete at the end of their life.

3

8. For Mary will follow, with tears in her eyes, her Saviour and Son to the foot of the cross. 9. The candles invite us to praise and to pray when Christmas greets Easter on Candlemas Day. Words: Elizabeth J Cosnett (b 1936) Music: Lourdes, French traditional melody © 1992 Stainer & Bell Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 616)

Collect Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty, whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh: grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts, by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Malachi 3.1-5 Thus says the Lord God: See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight – indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years. Then I will draw near to you for judgement; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow, and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.

Second Reading – Hebrews 2.14-18* Since the children share flesh and blood, Jesus himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death,

4

that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Gradual Hymn

1. In our darkness light has shone, Alleluia, still today the light shines on, Alleluia; Word made flesh in human birth, Alleluia, Light and Life of all the earth, Alleluia!

3. All who now in him believe, Alleluia, everlasting life receive, Alleluia; born of God and in his care, Alleluia, we his name and nature share, Alleluia!

2. Christ the Son incarnate see, Alleluia, by whom all things came to be, Alleluia; through the world his splendours shine, Alleluia, full of grace and truth divine, Alleluia!

4. Christ a child on earth appears, Alleluia, crown of all creation’s years, Alleluia; God’s eternal Word has come, Alleluia, he shall lead his people home, Alleluia!

Words: based on John 1.1-14, Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926) Music: Redland, Malcolm Archer (b 1952) (A&M 359) (Ancient & Modern – 101)

Gospel – Luke 2.22-40 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. (as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’ Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the

5

consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed – and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.

Offertory Hymn

1. New light has dawned, the Son of God is here, a holy light no earthly light outshines; the light has dawned, the light that casts out fear, the light that evil dreads and love defines. 2. The light of glory shines to angels’ song, the shepherds run to where a baby lies; a servant of the Lord, who waited long, acclaims the light to lighten Gentile eyes. 3. And priestly men sit listening to a boy, they see the dawning light within his face. Such words they hear those Christ-child lips employ! Amazing words of wisdom, truth and grace.

6

4. O Christ, the light who came to us on earth, shine through the shadow cast by human sin; renew the faith you gave at our new birth, destroy the dark, and let your light come in. Words: Paul Wigmore (b 1925) Music: Woodlands, Walter Greatorex (1877-1949) – AM 394 (Ancient & Modern – 112)

Anthem Nunc Dimittis – Geoffrey Burgon (1941-2010)

Communion Hymn

1. Like a candle flame, flickering small in our darkness, uncreated light shines through infant eyes.

2. Stars and angels sing, yet the earth sleeps in shadows; can this tiny spark set a world on fire?

God is with us, alleluia, come to save us, alleluia.

3. Yet his light shall shine from our lives, Spirit blazing, as we touch the flame of his holy fire. Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1988 Graham Kendrick / Make Way Music (Ancient & Modern – 74)

Post Communion Prayer Lord, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon and Anna, who lived to welcome the Messiah: may we, who have received these gifts beyond words, prepare to meet Christ Jesus when he comes to bring us to eternal life; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.

7

The Candlemas Procession Kindling of the Flame

Within your temple we ponder your loving kindness O Lord. As your name, so also your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with justice. A single candle is lit. The light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel. The Nunc Dimittis is sung as the light is passed around the congregation.

1. Lord, now let your servant go his way in peace. Your great love has brought me joy that will not cease.

3. Light of revelation to the gentiles shown, light of Israel’s glory to the world made known.

2. For my eyes have seen him promised from of old, saviour of all people, shepherd of one fold.

4. Glory to the Father and his only Son, with the Holy Spirit ever three in one.

Words: James Seddon (1915-1983) Music: North Coates, Timothy Richard Matthews (1826-1910) © Mrs M Seddon / Jubilate Hymns (Ancient & Modern - 397)

Prayer Lord God, the springing source of everlasting light, pour into the hearts of your faithful people the brilliance of your eternal splendour, that we, who by these kindling flames light up this temple to your glory, may have the darkness of our souls dispelled, and so be counted worthy to stand before you in that eternal city where you live and reign, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Processional Hymn The ministers and choir lead the procession to the font, followed by the people. As they process they sing the following hymn.

1. Of the Father’s heart begotten ere the world from chaos rose, he is Alpha: from that Fountain, all that is and hath been flows; he is Omega, of all things yet to come the mystic Close, evermore and evermore.

4. O how blest that wondrous birthday, when the Maid the curse retrieved, brought to birth mankind’s salvation, by the Holy Ghost conceived, and the Babe, the world’s Redeemer, in her loving arms received, evermore and evermore.

2. By his word was all created; he commanded and ’twas done; earth and sky and boundless ocean, universe of three in one, all that sees the moon’s soft radiance, all that breathes beneath the sun, evermore and evermore.

5. This is he, whom seer and sybil sang in ages long gone by; this is he of old revealèd in the page of prophecy; lo! he comes, the promised Saviour; let the world his praises cry! evermore and evermore.

3. He assumed this mortal body, frail and feeble, doomed to die, that the race from dust created might not perish utterly, which the dreadful Law had sentenced in the depths of hell to lie, evermore and evermore.

6. Sing, ye heights of heaven, his praises; Angels and Archangels, sing! wheresoe’er ye be, ye faithful, let your joyous anthems ring, every tongue his name confessing, countless voices answering, evermore and evermore. Amen.

Words: Corde natus ex parentis, Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (348-c413), translated by Roby Furley Davis (1866-1937) Music: Divinum Mysterium, melody from Piae Cantiones 1582, harm Compilers of New English Hymnal 1986 (Ancient & Modern – 80)

9

Final Responsory Father, here we bring to an end our celebration of the Saviour’s birth. Help us, in whom he has been born, to live his life that has no end. Here we have offered the Church’s sacrifice of praise. Help us, who have received the bread of life, to be thankful for your gift. Here we have rejoiced with faithful Simeon and Anna. Help us, who have found the Lord in his temple, to trust in your eternal promises. Here we have greeted the light of the world. Help us, who extinguish these candles, never to forsake the light of Christ. The candles are extinguished Here we stand near the place of baptism. Help us, who are marked with the cross, to share the Lord’s death and resurrection. Here we turn from Christ’s birth to his passion. Help us, for whom Lent is near, to enter deeply into the Easter mystery. Here we bless one another in your name. Help us, who now go in peace, to shine with your light in the world. Thanks be to God. Amen. The ministers and people depart.

6:00pm Evensong The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book, and the hymns are taken from New English Hymnal.

Baptism Visiting – Request for Help We are privileged that dozens of people bring their children to All Saints Oakham every year for baptism. We keep in touch with these families after the baptism, and we need some more volunteers for this work. Could you join this team? The role is not onerous: you would be asked to take on perhaps half-a-dozen children – to send a card on the anniversary, and drop in a newsletter three times a year to invite the family to relevant church activities. Each time, you could use the delivery as an opportunity for a visit, or if you

haven't time, just put it through the door. If you could help with this, please speak to Jackie Vecqueray (756613) or Revd. Iain Osborne.

Foodbank Update The Foodbank is currently short of the following items – sponge puddings, packets of smash, long life fruit juice, long life milk, deodorant, shower gel/soap, shaving foam/gel, washing-up liquid, washing powder/gel, large size nappies & toilet rolls. We have plenty of cereals and porridge, baked beans, tea, sanitary items, pasta and pasta sauces, fizzy drinks & cordials and most tinned goods at the moment. Thanks as ever for your ongoing generosity – your support has been such at Harvest & Christmas that the warehouse is creaking!

New Rural Dean It has been announced that the new Rural Dean of Rutland, to succeed Lee, will be Revd Jane Baxter, Vicar of Lyddington.

Easter Chicks If you can help with knitting chicks for Easter please can you contact Margaret Tyler (01572 724799 or margaret.tyler@oakhamteam.org.uk). Pattern available.

Collections We are organising a collection Julie and Phillip Hutchinson as they leave us next week. They have been involved with All Saints Oakham and the Oakham Team for some 40 years

and this is the end of an era for them. All monies should go to Debbie Sowter or Hilary Knight, churchwardens at Langham, or can also be left in Charlotte’s pigeon hole or given to Ann or Alison, Oakham chucrhwardens, clearly marked as for Julie and Phillip. The Oakham churchwardens are also organising leaving presents for Lee and Guli, and if you would like to make a contribution you can do so directly to them, or via the village churchwardens.

St John & St Anne St John & St Anne is an Almshouse Charity providing quality homes for retired people in receipt of a state pension. If you can live independently, and are looking to downsize but cannot afford to buy property locally, please call for further information – 01572 756950 or visit the website www.stjohnstanne.co.uk.

Music at Lunchtime – To a Wild Rose In addition to the regular Wednesday concerts, there will be a short series of four Friday concerts this winter, in which John Dobson will play Edward Macdowell’s four piano sonatas, which symmetrically surround the set of Woodland Sketches that give Edward Macdowell the Fur Elise moment – the ever popular and beautifully simple To a Wild Rose. Each of the sonatas will be preceded by this miniature along with one or more of the set of ten pieces.

Treasurer Wanted The Friends of All Saints Church is a social group, which conducts events and outings throughout the year for all members of the church community and also helps to raise money for a chosen charity each year. The committee are still looking for someone, who could act as Treasurer, to join their small and friendly group. This would not be an onerous position and would only involve meetings five or six times a year. If you feel that you could help, or if you would like a bit more information, please contact Liz Plummer (01572 720506, 07969 202624 or liz.plummer@oakhamteam.org.uk).

Traidcraft Stall Pattern The stall will be in Oakham Church after the 10:30 service next Sunday and 11 February. An amazing amount of £1066 is the total for sales from last year’s Christmas catalogue, thank you SO much to everyone who made a purchase, it really does make a difference. Thank you for your continued support. Denise (722729).

Kairos Prison Mission Kairos will be repeating last year’s very successful mission to Stocken Prison from 12-16 March 2018, and will be seeking help to bake biscuits, create a prayer chain, and to join the visiting team during the week itself. Cathy Dyson will be preaching at Oakham about the mission on Sunday 25 February. .
