Collect Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us your gift of faith that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to that which is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Amos 6.1a,4-7* Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts: Alas for those who are at ease in Zion, and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria! Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory, and lounge on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the stall; who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and like David improvise on instruments of music; who drink wine from bowls, and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! Therefore they shall now be the first to go into exile, and the revelry of the loungers shall pass away.

Second Reading – 1 Timothy 6.6-19 There is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will bring about at the right time – he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honour and eternal dominion. Amen. As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides

3

us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

Gospel – Luke 16.19-31 Jesus told this parable to those among the Pharisees who loved money: ‘There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.” But Abraham said, “Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.” The man who had been rich said, “Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house – for I have five brothers - that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.” Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.” He said, “No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.” Abraham said to him, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”’

Post Communion Prayer We praise and thank you, O Christ, for this sacred feast: for here we receive you, here the memory of your passion is renewed, here our minds are filled with grace, and here a pledge of future glory is given, when we shall feast at that table where you reign with all your saints for ever. Amen.

THURSDAY 6 OCTOBER 7:30pm – RUTLAND THEOLOGICAL SOCIETY Oakham Methodist Church Richard Adams: When is a parable not a parable? Richard, a former Chair of Rutland Theological Society, is a retired primary school Head teacher, writer and broadcaster. He is best known for regular contributions to Radio Leicester's Thought for the Day, his touring productions with Minimum Theatre, and several books, of which the best known (long out of print) are So God Said to Me and Seen God Lately?. Formerly a Methodist local preacher in the Melton Mowbray circuit, he now lives in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire (near Blackpool) and continues to write plays and preach regularly in the North Fylde circuit. Ever ready to turn traditional religious thinking inside out, in this talk he proposes to explore the likelihood of stories of Jesus - usually regarded as historical events - being parables about Jesus, and to assert that when it comes to the church's teaching, doctrine and creeds, nothing is set in stone; but our personal Christian faith depends on what we choose to believe.

Oakham Sunday School We are in the happy situation of having a Sunday School which has grown and the ages of the children now cover a larger range. In consequence we have split it into three groups – (1) Sunday School for children between 4 and 11 (Primary School age) will meet every Sunday of term times except for third Sunday when it is Family Communion in Church, and they will continue to meet in the Church Hall from 10:30am, joining the congregation at the distribution of Communion. I remain Leader of Sunday School; (2) ASH (All Saints Hub) are the children who are in the first year of Secondary School aged 12/13. They

9

will meet in one of Oakham School’s rooms (to be confirmed), but near the school chapel. Their Leader is Rebecca Falconer so please contact her if you have any questions. They will meet on the second Sunday as a separate group, be in Church for the third Sunday, and meet together with ASK on the fourth Sunday. These children are encouraged to attend church for the first Sunday as they have outgrown Sunday School; (3) The new ASK (All Saints Kids) group is for the children older than those already mentioned, and the Leader is Guli Francis-Dehqani. They are encouraged to be in church on first and third Sundays and will meet on second Sunday on their own in the Mayhew Room and on the fourth Sunday with ASH in the Oakham School room. If there are changes, the Leader of your child’s group will let you know. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful group of children and so grateful to those who teach and help. Thank you to you all. Robin Robson.

Clergy Appointment

Our curate Revd Dr Dominic Coad has been appointed as Team Vicar in the Benwell and Scotswood Team, in the Diocese of Newcastle. Dominic’s last Sunday will be Sunday 30th October when we will have a joint Team Service at Oakham Parish Church at 10:30am. This service will be followed by pre-cooked light lunch, and we need about 20 volunteers to cook a dish for about 10 people each. If you

10

can help please phone Marilyn (01572 723184), Araminta (01572 757827) or Jackie (01572 756613). There will be no sign-up for the meal; all will be welcome. The Churchwardens at Oakham are coordinating a collection for a leaving gift – please send any contribution to them directly or through your village Churchwarden. Dominic will be licensed by the Bishop of Newcastle on Monday 28th November. It is hoped that some people from Oakham will be able to travel to support Dominic, and more details will follow. We send the warmest of good wishes to Dominic on this appointment and to him and Frances as they prepare to move.
