6:00pm Word, Worship & Response Home is where the heart is Welcome and Opening Responsory Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

Hebrews 11:16

City of God, how broad and far outspread thy walls sublime! unharmed upon the eternal Rock the eternal City stands. We stand before the throne of God with countless crowds from every nation and race, tribe and language. Blessing and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honour, power and might be to our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn

1. Colours of day dawn into the mind, the sun has come up, the night is behind. Go down in the city, into the street, and let's give the message to the people we meet. So light up the fire and let the flame burn, open the door, let Jesus return. Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow, tell the people of Jesus, let his love show.

3

2. Go through the park, on into the town; the sun still shines on;, it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again; the people of darkness are needing a friend. 3. Open your eyes, look into the sky, the darkness has come, the sun came to die. The evening draws on, the sun disappears, but Jesus is living, his Spirit is near. Words: Sue McClellan (b 1951), John Paculabo (1946-2013) & Keith Ryecroft (b 1949) Music: Light Up The Fire, Sue McClellan (b 1951), John Paculabo (1946-2013) & Keith Ryecroft (b 1949) Š 1974 worshiptogether.com (The Source – 69)

Confession The saints were faithful unto death and now dwell in the heavenly kingdom for ever. As we celebrate their joy, let us bring to the Lord our sins and weaknesses, and ask for his mercy. Jesus Christ, risen master and triumphant Lord, we come to you in sorrow for our sins, and confess to you our weakness and unbelief. We have lived by our own strength, and not by the power of your resurrection. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us. We have lived by the light of our own eyes, as faithless and not believing. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us. We have lived for this world alone, and doubted our home in heaven. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us.

4

Absolution Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive us our sins, open our eyes to God’s truth, strengthen us to do God’s will and give us the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect O God, you declare your almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace, that we, running the way of your commandments, may receive your gracious promises, and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn

1. One more step along the world I go, one more step along the world I go, from the old things to the new keep me travelling along with you: And it’s from the old I travel to the new; keep me travelling along with you. 2. Round the corners of the world I turn, more and more about the world I learn, all the new things that I see you’ll be looking at along with me:

5

3. As I travel through the bad and good, keep me travelling the way I should; where I see no way to go you’ll be telling me the way, I know: 4. Give me courage when the world is rough, keep me loving though the world is tough; leap and sing in all I do, keep me travelling along with you: 5. You are older than the world can be, you are younger than the life in me; ever old and ever new, keep me travelling along with you: Words: Sydney Carter (1915-2004) Music: Southcote, Sydney Carter, arr John Barnard (b 1948) © 1971 Stainer & Bell Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 757)

First Reading – Hebrews 11.1-3,8-16 Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old – and Sarah herself was barren – because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, ‘as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.’ All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

6

Second Reading – Luke 12.32-40 Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.’

Sermon Home is where the heart is

Hymn

1. Holy Spirit, living breath of God, breathe new life into my willing soul. Bring the presence of the risen Lord to renew my heart and make me whole. Cause your word to come alive in me; give me faith for what I cannot see, give me passion for your purity; Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me.

2. Holy Spirit, come abide within, may your joy be seen in all I do. Love enough to cover every sin, in each thought and deed and attitude. Kindness to the greatest and the least, gentleness that sows the path of peace. Turn my striving into works of grace; breath of God, show Christ in all I do.

3. Holy Spirit, from creation’s birth, giving life to all that God has made, show your power once again on earth, cause your church to hunger for your ways. May the fragrance of our prayers arise; lead us on the road of sacrifice, that in unity the face of Christ may be clear for all the world to see. Psalm 33.12-22 12

Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.

13

The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind.

14

From where he sits enthroned he watches all the inhabitants of the earth—

15

he who fashions the hearts of them all, and observes all their deeds.

16

A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.

17

The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save.

18

Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love,

19

to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20

Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and shield.

21

Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.

22

Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever, world without end. Amen.

Intercessions The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. For ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace We are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God, through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Hymn

1. And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Saviour’s blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain? For me, who him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

3. He left his Father’s throne above – so free, so infinite his grace – emptied himself of all but love, and bled for Adam’s helpless race. ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me!

2. ’Tis mystery all! the Immortal dies! Who can explore his strange design? In vain the first-born seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, let angel minds inquire no more.

4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature’s night; thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

5. No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own. The last two lines of each verse are repeated. Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Sagina, from The Bouquet, 1825, Thomas Campbell (1800-1876) (The Source – 21)

Blessing May God the Father bring us to the home which his Son prepares for all who love him. Amen. May God the Son give us the will to live for him each day in life eternal. Amen. May God the Holy Spirit give us the assurance that our citizenship is in heaven with the blessed and beloved, and the whole company of the redeemed. Amen. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.

Traidcraft Sales & Dates The sales for July amounted to a healthy £256.58 – as ever thank you so much to all who support the regular stall. Dates for August are today at Oakham after the 10:30 service and again on 28th, the 4th Sunday this month rather than the third – a change to the normal pattern as I will be on holiday. Thank you. Denise (722729).

Oakham PCC

At the PCC meeting on 13 July it was agreed to proceed with the boiler project following the grant of a Faculty from the DAC. The boilers will be situated on the north wall of the parish office. Tenders for the work will now be sought with a view to starting work in November and completion by Christmas. A Faculty has also been granted for the Memorial Garden replanting, which

13

will begin in October. There has been no response from the DAC following their queries about the Clock project, but letters seeking sponsorship have been sent out locally. A Faculty application has been submitted for the hanging of the banner of ACM Sir Jock Kennedy, and it is hoped this can be installed by Remembrance Sunday. Deanery matters included a report that the Deanery Eucharist on 7 July was attended by about 90 people. The NSPCC have moved their Christmas concert booking to Thursday 1 December to avoid late night shopping on Monday 5 December. Full minutes are available to view by the North Door at Oakham Church.

Braunston Bats

Braunston Church’s resident population of circa 600 bats are active again, creating a significant workload during the summer months to keep the church clean. We urgently need volunteers who can spare an hour or two every month or so to vacuum floors and clean pews and furniture etc. If you would like to help please contact Sue Willetts (01572 722150 or sue.willetts@oakhamteam.org.uk) or sign up on the sheet in the church.

Stamford Academy Language Courses

Stamford Academy's 10 week (20 hour) Modern Language Courses are

14

scheduled to start in the week commencing Monday 26 September 2016. Please see the website for further details if you are interested.

Traidcraft The Traidcraft stall will be present in Church after the 10:30 team service today. Please do have a look at what Traidcraft has to offer and even if you don't need to buy anything consider making a donation to the very worthwhile work of Traidcraft Exchange. If you would like any more information about the work of Traidcraft in the field of Fairtrade don't hesitate to get in touch. Denise 722729.

Greenbelt 2016 Families and individuals will be attending the Sunday morning service at the Greenbelt Festival on Sunday 28 August, where Archbishop Justin Welby will be answering questions put to him by young people. For more information and to book tickets visit the Greenbelt website: www.greenbelt.org.uk/local-churchoffers/. Tickets for the service are free for us who live in Peterborough diocese and you can ‘top up’ your ticket to include the afternoon for £25 whilst under 25s go free for the whole day. If you intend to come, please be in touch with Dominic and we will arrange to meet up on site and provide lifts for any who need it.
