8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Team Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn* 1. What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary's lap is sleeping? whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping? this, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds worship and angels sing: haste, haste to bring him praise, the babe, the son of Mary.

2. Why lies he in such mean estate, where ox and ass are feeding? Come, have no fear, God’s Son is here, his love all loves exceeding: nails, spear, shall pierce him through, the cross be borne for me, for you: hail, hail, the Saviour comes, the babe, the Son of Mary.

3. So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh, all tongues and peoples own him, the King of kings salvation brings, let every heart enthrone him: raise, raise your song on high while Mary sings a lullaby, joy, joy, for Christ is born, the babe, the Son of Mary. Words: William Chatterton Dix (1837-1989) and Compilers of New English Hymnal, 1986 Music: Greensleeves, English traditional melody, arranged by John Stainer (1840-1901) from Christmas Carols New and Old 1871 © Hymns Ancient & Modern Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 88)

Gloria in Excelsis* 1. Glory be to God in heaven, peace to all throughout the world. Thanks and praise to God our Father, love in action is unfurled. Gloria in excelsis Deo Gloria in excelsis Deo

2. Jesus Christ is born among us, Son of God light of the world. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Love in action is unfurled.

3. Here on earth Christ’s life he gave us; living, dying, ris’n on high. God we praise your gen’rous spirit. All our needs you full supply Words: Rachel Firth (b 1973) Music: Iris, French traditional carol, harmonised by Martin Shaw (1875-1958)

Collect Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image and yet more wonderfully restored us through your Son Jesus Christ: grant that, as he came to share in our humanity, so we may share the life of his divinity; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 61.10–62.3* I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

Second Reading – Galatians 4.4-7 When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

Gradual Hymn* 1. While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground, the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around.

4

2. ‘Fear not,’ said he (for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind); ‘glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind.

3. ‘To you in David's town this day is born of David’s line a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; and this shall be the sign:

5. Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God, who thus addressed their joyful song:

4. ‘The heavenly babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swathing bands, and in a manger laid.’

6. ‘All glorybe to God on high, and to the earth be peace; good will henceforth from heaven to men begin and never cease.’

Words: based on Luke 2.1-20, Nahum Tate (1652-1715) Music: Winchester Old, ascribed to George Kirbye (c1565-1634) in Thomas Este’s The whole booke of psalms 1592, possible derived from Christopher Tye’s The Actes of the Apostles 1553 (Ancient & Modern– 89)

Gospel – Luke 2.15-21 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Offertory Hymn* 1. The first Nowell the angel did say was to Bethlehem’s shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay keeping their sheep on a cold winter's night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! 2. Then wise men from a country far looked up and saw a guiding star; they travelled on by night and day to reach the place where Jesus lay:

3. At Bethlehem they entered in, on bended knee they worshipped him; they offered there in his presence their gold and myrrh and frankincense: 4. Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord; for Christ has our salvation wrought and with his blood our life hath bought:

Words: West-country carol, possibly 18th century, adapted by Michael Arnold Perry (1942-1996) Music: The First Nowell, English traditional melody, arranged by John Stainer (1840-1901) from Christmas Carols New and Old 1871 (Ancient & Modern – 86)

Post Communion Prayer Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son shared at Nazareth the life of an earthly home: help your Church to live as one family, united in love and obedience, and bring us all at last to our home in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn* 1. See, amid the winter's snow, born for us on earth below, see, the Lamb of God appears, promised from eternal years! Hail, thou ever-blessed morn! Hail, redemption's happy dawn! Sing through all Jerusalem: Christ is born in Bethlehem! 2. Lo, within a manger lies he who built the starry skies, he who, throned in height sublime, sits amid the cherubim!

3. Say, ye holy shepherds, say, what your joyful news today; wherefore have ye left your sheep on the lonely mountairi steep? 4. ‘As we watched at dead of night, lo, we saw a wondrous light; angels, singing “Peace on earth,” told us of a Saviour's birth.’ 5. Sacred Infant, all divine, what a tender love was thine, thus to come from highest bliss down to such a world as this! Words: Edward Caswall (1814-1878) Music: Humility (Oxford), John Goss (1800-1880) (Ancient & Modern – 83)
