8:00am Holy Communion 10:30am Parish Communion* The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn* 1. Meekness and majesty, manhood and deity, in perfect harmony the Man who is God. Lord of eternity dwells in humanity, kneels in humility and washes our feet.

2. Father’s pure radiance, perfect in innocence, yet learns obedience to death on a cross. Suffering to give us life, conquering through sacrifice, and as they crucify prays: ‘Father, forgive.’

O what a mystery, meekness and majesty. Bow down and worship for this is your God, this is your God!

3. Wisdom unsearchable, God the invisible, love indestructible in frailty appears. Lord of infinity, stooping so tenderly, lifts our humanity to the heights of his throne.

Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950), arr Christopher Norton (b 1953) © 1986 Kingsway Songs (Ancient & Modern – 728)

Collect Almighty God, you have broken the tyranny of sin and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts whereby we call you Father: give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that we and all creation may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Zechariah 9.9-12 Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem; and the battle-bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.

Second Reading – Romans 7.15-25a I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Gradual Hymn* 1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast.’ I came to Jesus as I was, Weary and worn and sad; I found in him a resting-place, and he has made me glad.

2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘Behold, I freely give the living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live.’ I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him.

3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘I am this dark world’s light; look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright’: I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I’ll walk till travelling days are done. Words: Horatius N Bonar (1808-1889) Music: Kingsfold, melody from English Country Songs 1893, collected by John A F Maitland (1856-1936), harmonised by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) (Ancient & Modern – 669)

Gospel – Matthew 11.16-19,25-30 At that time Jesus said, ‘To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market-places and calling to one another, “We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.” For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon”; 19the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!” Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’

Offertory Hymn* 1. Alleluia, sing to Jesus! His the sceptre, his the throne; alleluia, his the triumph, his the victory alone: hark, the songs of peaceful Sion thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood.

3. Alleluia, bread of angels, thou on earth our food, our stay; alleluia! here the sinful flee to thee from day to day: Intercessor, Friend of sinners, earth's Redeemer, plead for me, where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea.

2. Alleluia, not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; alleluia, he is near us, faith believes, nor questions how: though the cloud from sight received him, when the forty days were o'er, shall our hearts forget his promise, ‘I am with you evermore’?

4. Alleluia, King eternal, thee the Lord of lords we own; alleluia, born of Mary, earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne: thou within the veil hast entered, robed in flesh, our great High Priest; thou on earth both Priest and Victim in the eucharistic feast.

Words: William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898) Music: Hyfrydol, melody by Rowland Huw Prichard (1811-1887), harmonised by Compilers of English Hymnal 1906 (Ancient & Modern – 422)

Communion Anthem* Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, make they way plain before my face. For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety. Words: Psalms 5.8, 4.9 Music: Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

5

Communion Hymn* 1. Just as I am, without one plea but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come.

4. Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve: because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come.

2. Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come.

5. Just as I am, thy love unknown has broken every barrier down; now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come.

3. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need, in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come.

6. Just as I am, of that free love the breadth, length, depth, and height to prove, here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come. Words: Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871) Music: Saffron Walden, A W Godfrey Brown (b 1936) (Ancient & Modern – 451)

Post Communion Prayer O God, whose beauty is beyond our imagining and whose power we cannot comprehend: show us your glory as far as we can grasp it, and shield us from knowing more than we can bear until we may look upon you without fear; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Final Hymn* 1. Forth in thy Name, O Lord, I go, my daily labour to pursue; thee, only thee, resolved to know in all I think or speak or do.

3. Thee may I set at my right hand, whose eyes mine inmost substance see, and labour on at thy command, and offer all my works to thee.

2. The task thy wisdom hath assigned, O let me cheerfully fulfil; in all my works thy presence find, and prove thy good and perfect will.

4. Give me to bear thy easy yoke, and every moment watch and pray, and still to things eternal look, and hasten to thy glorious day;

5. For thee delightfully employ whate'er thy bounteous grace hath given; and run my course with even joy, and closely walk with thee to heaven. Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Song 34, Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) (Ancient & Modern – 476)

6

Set up thyself O God a- | bove the | heavens : and thy | glory a-bove | all the | earth.

7

They have laid a net for my feet and press’d | down my | soul : they have digg’d a pit before me, and are fallen into the | midst of | it them- | selves.
