I’m hoping you all have survived the recent ‘weather bombs’, looks like we are well and truly into winter. We have just spent the last two days with the NZIPP Board and Regional Chairs at Policy and Planning. It was great to meet all the Regional Chairs, and get an understanding of the important issues for them. I know we went away with some great ideas and things we will be working on to continue the development of NZIPP.

If I ever hear a photographer question what NZIPP offers them they’ll be shot down very quickly with this reply: “There are over 70 education and business development opportunities offered Nationwide ever year by the NZIPP – so there is no excuse to get off your butt and get involved!” I’ve just returned from our annual NZIPP Policy and Planning meeting with all the Regional Chairpeople, NZIPP staff, and the NZIPP Board. I’m really impressed with the level of activity most region’s are now offering. With guest speaker’s at most regional meetings, Infocus, and several major Regional events like Tonic, there’s plenty on offer to keep members creatively inspired and up with the very latest in best practice.

Registrations for Infocus will open in June. I’ve heard a few murmurs about Queenstown being expensive to get to and accommodation prices. If you’re thinking this, have you actually had a look at airfares and accommodation options? Or is that just the perception you have in your head - because really that IS all it is - a perception. Airfares from Auckland at the moment are only about $100 one way; from Wellington are $110, and from Christchurch are as low as $60! Forward thinking members have already booked holiday homes – often quite luxurious - between several of them, and accommodation is working out to be as low as $50 per night. We’ve even managed to keep Early Bird registration costs as low as last year with a major international speaker coming! We’ve worked hard to provide you with a programme that offer’s more than just “show and tell” presentations. With interactive sessions and off site workshops making the most of the stunning Queenstown location, plus a mix of business and art. The NZIPP Board and staff work extremely hard to make Infocus and the Iris Awards a great event (and it’s a major financial undertaking), so we’re hoping you will all enthusiastically support it. Make it a priority for your professional development budget this year. You’ll have a great time – of course, and there’s that added bonus of spring skiing this year too. You will notice there have been more changes on the NZIPP Board this month with a farewell from Gary Hewlett, so he can dedicate time to his business interests and avoid any conflict of interest between Image College and NZIPP education activities. Auckland portrait photographer and long standing NZIPP member Russell Hamlet has taken on the role in “caretaker” position until the NZIPP AGM in September. Nicola Inglis has been busy getting NZIPP’s “social media” face online with Facebook. Check it out and become a fan – well click that “like” button anyway - and keep in touch with all the latest news as it happens. Until next month… Regards

Commercial Directors Report

I’m writing this report while sitting on a plane heading home after a couple of busy days of the annual NZIPP Policy & Planning Meeting, NZIPP Board Meeting, and Commercial Q assessments. A full on couple of days, but well worth it. This was the sixth consecutive P&P meeting I had attended as either a Regional Chair or NZIPP Director. I must say that the tone on conversation, level of participation by attendees, and general “vibe” just keeps getting better and better. One comment made by an attendee (who attributed it to Shelley AmerioHiggins) that struck home with me, was that membership of an organisation such as the NZIPP is like gym membership. You can’t simply pay your subs and expect results. So stop for moment and think about this statement. When the meaning sinks in read on...... Too many people do just pay their subs and expect miracles. It doesn’t work like that, certainly not on this planet. If you get involved and active in Institute activities you will see the results. Did you know that last year there were something in the order of 60-70 separate meetings, seminars and events held by the NZIPP nationwide. If you can’t see at least a few that are relevant and beneficial to you, or are still asking what’s in it for me, I suggest you look in the mirror.

Around the time you are reading this, the Australian’s will be holding the annual PMA show and APPA awards. Here’s hoping to see a few Kiwi’s do well. June also sees the AIPA run the Image Nation seminar over two days in Auckland, this may be of interest to commercial members. NZIPP members get the benefit of registration at discounted rates. For further information see www.imagenation.co.nz Don’t forget Infocus in Queenstown in September. New Zealand’s longest running, and largest annual event for professional photographers. There are still heaps of very good airfares available so don’t use the excuse of travel costs to stop you from attending. The programme has been designed to have content that will appeal to wide a range of photographer’s abilities and specialties, with something for everyone. Of particular note will be keynote speaker Michael Grecco. I’ve seen Michael speak in New York City. Trust me you won’t be disappointed. Check out his new website at www. michaelgrecco.com, while there have a look at the behind the scenes time lapse videos of his shoots. He’ll also be holding a Masterclass the day after the Gala Awards dinner, spaces will be strictly limited and likely to sell out quickly. The Masterclass will be a case of first in first served, so don’t procrastinate when Infocus registrations open later this month. If you are considering entering the Iris Awards this year which are being judged during Infocus, be aware of several changes that affect some categories. The Commercial category now requires that images have been commissioned, intended for and resulting from commercial/corporate applications. You are also required provide a title that describes the intended usage of the image. This is to help judges put the image in context with the intended use.

In addition the Editorial/Photojournalism category requires that images must have been commissioned and/or published, and intended for media use in books, magazines, newspaper, or web. Images must not be composites. If you do want to enter highly post-produced images consider the Illustrative or Creative categories. There is also a new Travel category for images illustrating a destination or culture. The rules don’t state that the images need to have been taken overseas and I think there is a wonderful opportunity to push boundaries here and provoke the judges. Finally the government is changing the GST rate to 15% from 1 October. This may be a good time to make a review of your pricing and accounting systems. Hopefully you are all GST registered, and if you are turning over more than $60,000 p.a. you must be registered. If you are turning over less than this maybe you should consider other career options. During the Pricing and Best Practice Workshops run recently by Craig Robertson and myself, it is clear that a photographer running a very modest business wanting an average income needs to turnover around $100,000 p.a. to make it viable. Now back to GST, most photographers dealing with the general public charge prices that include GST. It is normal practice for commercial photographers dealing business to business to provide estimates that exclude GST. As you can claim back all the GST you pay when buying products and services for your business, in theory the GST rate increase (and associated price changes) should have a net effect of zero on your business. For those that include GST in their pricing may however desire to keep invoice totals that include GST below certain price points. For example a job for a commercial client charged at $1,775 + GST today is $1,996.88 including GST. After 1 October it would need to be $2041.25 including GST, which may psychologically be a lot more as it breaks the $2k barrier. Whatever you do don’t let your commercial clients talk you down with the “it’s costing us more now” argument, just like you they can claim 100% of the GST they pay. The only figure that really matters for business is the GST exclusive price. Have a great month and remember to join the NZIPP Facebook page for your regular fix of professional photography news.

Most of you will, by now, have heard of The Image College, my photography training business. One if the biggest decisions I had to make when it was being conceived was whether I could manage three roles at the same time running Love Images (my photography business), The Image College, and as national Portrait Director for you guys. After a lot of soul-searching I decided that you all deserve someone who can more fully commit to the position that I have been honoured and humbled to fill. So at the same time as announcing the launch of The Image College in early April I also tendered my resignation as NZIPP Portrait Director. Craig asked me to stay on in a caretaker role until the position was filled, and as that has now been achieved I am standing down, with Russell Hamlet taking up the reigns. I want to thank you all for the support and encouragement I received during my tenure, and also to those of you who are supporting The Image College by attending the two education events announced so far. I have been proud to serve photographers in New Zealand with the NZIPP, and will continue to do so as I bring more and more high profile speakers to our beautiful little corner of the world to educate and entertain you. Thank you, and keep warm and safe over the coming winter months.

For those of you who don’t know me I have been a member of the NZIPP for 17 years or so, and enjoyed every moment and every person .I have benefited hugely in my business through associations made, have been saved by the gear lent, intellectually stimulated by judging and visiting mentors, and above all learnt so much through the ups and downs of making a living in this great industry of ours. As I gave a presentation the other night to Auckland members it struck home to me again what lucky buggers we are really. We get the opportunity to make a great living creating, capturing and selling memories. Our only inventory is a bit of ink and paper that are leveraged well beyond their actual worth. The power, and hence the value is the love your clients have for each other. No images no memories. When you walk from that sitting knowing that they got all you had to give .Our professionalism and the result, combined with the emotional content for them, is a recipe for joy on all sides. I am always fascinated by how many of our members relate to pricing, how many suffer angst over it and eventually undervalue themselves.

We are in this game because we are people lovers and generally speaking givers by nature. This can be a problem for some of us (not me I can tell you) when it comes to pricing and selling your work. Look at operators who are successful. They don’t give themselves away. It saddens me that a lot of photographers who deserve more don’t make the kind of living they dream of making. Any of us can make as much as we want. A mistake often made is relating to your own prices and making them what you yourself could afford. It’s a standing joke amongst me and my mates that none of us can afford each other. Of my peer group (developers, retailers, professionals etc etc) a common thread exists of having the confidence to back ourselves. As I said in my presentation if you went to a surgeon, you want to meet a confident and self assured person. And you know they won’t be cheap. With due diligence your clients have come to you. Clients who let us into their lives want just that from us. They have trusted us with the most intimate of responsibilities. “Cheap things aren’t good, and good things aren’t cheap”. If your work is crap then it’s not worth much. You can learn fast from fellow members and all the opportunities this institute offers. I suspect though that this is not the case for most. I am in awe of the work that many of you produce. Ask yourself then if you are earning at the level you would like. And if not why not?. If you do beautiful work for your clients and sell it any price (as Mahlon Burch made a great point), six months later if you offered to buy it back at 5 x the amount would they sell it back to you. I doubt it!

This month I’m excited about the number of Q submissions. There were so many it has taken us a little longer than usual to convene the panels to assess them. Thanks for your patience! Why so many? Well, I’m chalking it up to the power of Facebook. I got my wedding Q ages ago, and I’ve been meaning to get around to submitting my portrait Q for almost as long and every time I would let the deadline go past and think ‘next time’. So this time I started a Facebook group to push me, and all the other people who were promising themselves ‘next time’. We called ourselves the ‘Q Tryhards’ and we have supported each other, asked the questions we all had, and roped in some experts to answer them. The group will continue to exist as long as people want it, so if you let this last deadline go past and you’re still muttering vaguely about ‘next time’...do yourself a favour and mark August 4th in your diary now, then email me or message me on FB about joining the ‘Q try-hards’! We know Facebook is great at connecting people (including the dorky kid from High School you don’t really want to connect with). So we have started our own NZIPP Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/NZIPP The primary aim of the NZIPP Facebook page is to connect NZIPPers and other interested photographers to each other, and to the latest interesting happenings. You know how it works, hit the link and ‘like’ us :-) And we’re going to be blogging soon too...watch this space!

Meanwhile...Iris Awards are on my mind. David Oliver had a lot to say at his recent Palmerston North seminar about the importance of personal work. I know Gerald Wilson talked about this too when he spoke to a recent regional meeting in Tauranga. Your personal work keeps you honest, it keeps your creative fires stoked and it’s essential. Us wedding photographers have it good because we have our busy season and our personal work season. Honours Council Report

It appears that members are already starting to think about entering the Iris Awards this year. I’ve been receiving many enquiries from members wishing to know where they stand in terms of award levels, and wanting to know how many points or awards they need to become an NZIPP Associate, Master, Fellow or in a couple of cases Grand Master. To do this yourself you need to do the following: •

Go to the NZIPP web site www.nzipp.org.nz, and login to the NZIPP Members area using your membership number and password.

If you can’t remember your membership number or password then email web@nzipp.org.nz, & our Web Administrator will get in contact with you.

Upon gaining access to the NZIPP Members area click on the Member Profile menu option, then click on the tab titled AWARDS

Here you will find out what awards you currently have. At the top is your Honours summary i.e. Associate, Master, Fellow + Bars

Followed by your Awards Summary. You’ll notice that there is a 4 year activity> 10 points: Yes or No information. What this indicates is whether or not you have gained the necessary 10 points in the last 4 years in order to be valid to achieve another award this year.

At this point you’ll need to do your own calculations to work out exactly what awards you need in terms of Gold, Silver and Bronze awards to achieve your next level. Details of exactly what you need can be found by clicking on the Help button on the top right hand side of the screen.

Detailed below is a chart of what is needed for each level. From 2009 the following points and conditions are required to achieve the various Distinctions/Honours. To move to the next level of distinction, all conditions in that row must be satisfied:

Get thinking about your images now. Remember you have ten chances of becoming an award-winning photographer at this year’s Iris Awards in Queenstown. It’s only three months away now!!!!!

Potential clients using the Find a Photographer function will first search by region, then by qualification (Commercial, Wedding, Portrait – remember you’re only listed in categories in which you have a Q). If 10 listings come up, & only two have galleries loaded to grab that buyer’s attention, guess who’s going to get the job! In addition those that have galleries loaded will appear at the top of the results list, & those who don’t have galleries will appear at the bottom - so loading your profile and gallery is really worth the effort. Don’t delay – login to the NZIPP membership system using your member ID & password, & go to the Q Profile tab of your membership record. Check out the Help pages for guidelines on how to use the new system, & don’t forget to save & submit your new profile. Once submitted your profile is queued & will be available online once approved. This is not an automated task so can take up to 24 hours.

Obituaries

Obituaries Dinesh Parmar - NZIPP Auckland Dinesh Parmar was primarily a Wedding and Portrait Photographer based here in Auckland. He shot a lot of Indian weddings, and for those of you who have attended such events realise what a daunting task it is. He was outstanding at it, and quickly built up a reputation as someone who produced beautiful creative images. He was always generous with his time and advice, and even in the last few days never lost his sense of humour, he will be sadly missed by all those who knew him. Dinesh was 45 and leaves a wife and two young children. Tony Brownjohn Auckland / Northland Region Dinesh Parmar

Ian Hawthorn - Geelong, Australia Ian was hugely influential to myself and many other photographers in the late 70’s. Around 1978 he conducted a two-day workshop in Wellington and demonstrated studio portrait posing, lighting for individuals and groups, and to do low light church interior portraits of the bride and groom. Quite frankly he was just what I needed then for putting together family groups that looked relaxed and symmetrically posed. He was a keen observer of human behaviour, and made the interaction between people look natural in his portraits.

Shooting a wedding couple at one-second exposure was not what most Kiwis were doing at the time. He showed a whole new style that had atmosphere and sensitivity. From then on “altar” wedding photographs surfaced at Print Judging. I also had the pleasure of enjoying Ian’s talent again at the Hamilton NZIPP convention. He was very philosophical and lost a few people at that time. Ian had a bad car accident and pretty much retired from photography, but he slowly recovered and took up painting, having several exhibitions. Lena and I were lucky enough to visit Ian and Marleen at their home a few years ago. I expected to see the photographer turned painter doing landscapes, not terribly well. How mistaken was I ! His paintings were mostly abstract nudes and in vivid colours. They were bold and different. I left with a copy of his book that celebrated the lives of well-known local identities. He used a wide angle technique that had the subject in context. All superbly lit, and arranged. This book “One Man’s Eye” has been considered some of Australia’s finest portrait photography. Ian was honoured by the AIPP, if I remember rightly, as one of the first Fellows. At 85 he must have packed a lot into his time. He was simply inspirational. Regional Updates Canterbury / Westland Region Eli Reed -Christchurch Art Gallery - 17 May 2010 It only took one week and the word was out. Eli Reed, Magnum Photographer, is in town. Keen photographers – professionals and amateurs filled the auditorium at the Christchurch Art Gallery and they knew they were onto something special. Eli Reed generously shared his work with us for over an hour. Slideshows of the Lost Boys of Sudan, Black America, the Middle East, Barack Obama before and after becoming President, stills photography for the movie industry, and much more. Image after image flicked past, too fast to really soak them up, but it gave us a good indication of the work he has been doing over the years. He said he believes in photographing the world as it is, not how we would like it to be.

Christchurch Art Gallery Auditorium r

He was asked about the ethics of publishing photos of people in public places. He said that as an artist in the public eye, he believes his work is important for the overall good. He can’t use his images in advertising without a model release, but otherwise he believes his work can’t be stopped by thinking about having someone’s permission to use their photo in his work. He added that photographers have to watch that they are respectful and not making fun of someone in their public images. He also discussed traumatic images such as the 9/11 image of a man falling from the tower. He said that it is a very uncomfortable image, but that was not a normal event. He said he has seen a lot of blood but it doesn’t bother him, but you can’t step aside and say “I shouldn’t do this” because it’s part of history. When asked if he ever let his own anger come into it, he said there is no such thing as being objective. He only gets bothered if they try to touch him but he’s good at martial arts. He doesn’t usually get mad, he just gets reasonable, and it’s better if he stays calm and documents what is going on. Eli was asked what being a Magnum photographer means to him. He said that Magnum is a good group of people, beavers, serious about photography. It is inspiring and it raises the bar. It’s a collective of likeminded people, not an agency and they get nervous if they make a profit! He was asked if he had any regrets. He said yes, being involved in a really bad movie called Belly. He spoke of how he is now doing 50/50 still/videography work and he believes the demand for video is growing. He enjoys it and his last 5 jobs have involved still and videography.

Waikato / BOP Region We were very fortunate to have Ollie Dale (Auckland Region Chairperson) speak at our last meeting and sharing “all his pies”. Ollie is the proud dad of two, and shared some fantastic photos taken of his kids - a very special moment where big bro meets little sis - all shot on video and then edited to selected stills so as not to miss a single important frame.

Ollie has a very vivacious mind and is always coming up with new and innovative ideas. He has been photographing a lot lately with his tilt shift and getting fascinating candid portraiture results. It’s all about having fun and Ollie’s work reflects this. Ollie is not only is a successful photographer, he is also editor for e-magazine “NZ Photographer”. Thanks Ollie - was great to have you there! Special thanks to this months print judge Chris Traill. This month’s highest print scores were Sasha Kahaki (88) and Kelly Comins (84).

Auckland / Northland Region Our monthly meeting for May was held at Russell Hamlet’s country studio, out in Coatesville, north of Auckland. Russell is one of Auckland’s most established portrait photographers, and not only opened up his home and studio for the Auckland members to visit but also spent the evening educating the members about how he does what he does so successfully.

Touted by some as “one of the best meetings in ages”, Russell presented a candid look into how he approaches portraiture photography, the importance of the processes he goes through, and some best practises for portrait and wedding photographers alike. Without giving away too many of his personal business secrets, we were all treated to a rare look behind the scenes of a successful photographer, and most people who braved the first rain (torrential at times) to land on Russell’s property in 8 months left with either pages of notes of ideas for their own business, or a better understanding of what’s made Russell’s business so successful. Regional Updates Welcome to Kate Watkins Hi All, Kate Rhiannon Murphy Watkins (Kate Watkins) arrived on the 27th May 2010. She’s really strong and healthy, weighing in at 3.8 kg / 8.5 pounds. Peta’s doing really well – she was able to rest prior to the birth, and the operation was quick and without problems, and Kate’s has started feeding well. Welcome to Skye Quax Blair and I welcomed our beautiful little girl Skye Grace into the world on her due day 10th of April. She had her first official photoshoot at 1 week old where mum and dad fought over the camera to photograph her. We are all doing really well, she is a dream baby, very relaxed and we are loving our new role as mum and dad. She’s looking forward to her first big trip to Queenstown in September! Something that makes you grumpy? Having a vision in my head and not being able to make it work! And I’d also have to say that the work that goes into newborn shots is very underestimated. It can be extremely challenging to get the shot you want. Website or blog site that you enjoy? Are you a collector of anything? Anything that I can put a baby in that doesn’t look to ‘proppy’ Name one thing not many people know about you: This was a really hard one to answer. I’m such an open book I’m not really sure what people wouldn’t know about me. Hmmm but maybe that I was a complete JPEGer, never even considered shooting RAW till about 6 weeks ago. Now I have to admit I should have tried it years ago! Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Having someone else cook for me. List five things you would need to survive, if left alone on a deserted island. Hmmm sunblock – I’m way too fair skinned to be out in the sun that long with no protection! Sunglasses, Facebook,, coffee, and my family – I know that my 4 kids count as more than one thing and technically I’m not alone. But I really couldn’t live without them and their craziness. Without them I’d be building a raft made of palm trees and flax faster than Tom Hanks in Castaway!

Content Aware Fill This is one automated feature that saves me a lot of retouching time. I’m usually sceptical of completely automatic approaches becuase I can always find some images to confuse them. That said, it seems to work on about 85% of what I throw at it and as it can get the job done in a fraction of the time I use it often. The technology is incorporated into the Edit:Fill menu item and also the Spot Healing Brush. Here’s what I’ve found it useful for:

Filling in corners and gaps created when using Photomerge. I use Photomerge often to get views I can’t get with a single shot. In the past I would be faced with cropping the image to eliminate the blank corners or cloning and stretching the corners to fill in the blanks. Edges filled in automatically. Removal of wires, objects, intrusions. The Spot Healing brush tool now has a ‘content aware’ option. By running it across something like the wire in this picture, it will remove the wire but keep intact any existing hard lines such as the edges of the building, shadows etc. This new feature does make the older clone tool look clumsy by comparison. Industry News EYECON Mentors Canon New Zealand has unveiled the first two mentors for the EYEcon 2010 photographic competition, NZIPP member Lauretta Goode and Peter Meecham. NZIPP member Lauretta Goode graduated with a bachelor of media arts majoring in photography and after working at the Waikato Times as a photographer she launched her own company to enter the world of weddings. Now a qualified master photographer of the NZIPP Lauretta is excited to be involved both as a judge and a mentor of EYEcon and thinks that an experience like this will leave a lasting impression on an aspiring photographer. Hard on the Heels of All Black Heritage Canon New Zealand has partnered with legendary kiwi photographer Peter Bush to support his exhibition, ‘Hard on the Heels’ - a tribute to Peter’s career capturing over six decades of the All Blacks. Mike Johnston & Peter Bush

The exhibition, which will tour 13 venues across the country over the next two years, features more than 100 of Peter’s most memorable All Black shots and is testament to his photographic skill and passion for the game. Taken over 60 years there is a mix of personal favorites and great moments in history; alongside the controversial, contentious and humorous behind-the-scenes shots of teams on tour and relaxing post-game.

Corporate Situations Vacant, Classifieds, Buy/Sell Members Gallery for Sale In 2003 I established a gallery featuring my own work mostly portrayng landscapes and aerials of Mount Maunganui and the Bay of Plenty. I relocated my studio a few years later to an adjoining building. With the majority of my business now relating to portrait photography, photo-workshops, and some publishing. I have decided to concentrate on those areas and sell my gallery, but retain the studio.

I’m hoping a good keen person with a flair for retail will take on the gallery, continue to sell my decor work, and augment the business with associated photo related products and services, perhaps including wedding work. I am celebrating being a superannuitant, and realise I can’t be everywhere at once. It is time to move on as they say. I believe my branding is second to none in the greater Tauranga area. Over a 36-year period we have created five businesses, including two Prolabs, a studio, a retail shop and a gallery. Add to that three books, several calendars, about 18 pro seminars, workshops for amateurs, 15 trips to Aussie AIPP conferences, NZIPP involvements etc. The Tulloch name is therefore well known and respected. Although I will retain my name, the Tulloch brand will be on the gallery images.

Our gallery is in the heart of the Downtown Mount. It is a nice modern shop at street level with large windows. Our clientelle are predominantly locals buying for their business premises, apartments or as gifts. We regularly sell to kiwis who live overseas and are home visiting family. My work is in such farflung places as Egypt, New York, London, Sweden and Australia. Add to this 50 Cruise ships visiting Mt Maunganui next year, and the potential is excellent.
