John Martin: Dear friends of Northwestern

Dear Friends of Northwestern and especially Friends of the Northwestern Foundation:

As I sit down to pen this, my fi nal letter to you as Chairman of our Foundation, my feelings are bittersweet. Thanks to all of you, as well as our fi ne and dedicated staff, these last twelve months have seen a very substantial increase to our Foundation’s assets. We now have twenty endowed chairs and two lectureships, more than any other regional University.

It has been ten years since I was asked to join the Board of the Foundation, and then asked to serve on your Executive Committee. I’m incredibly proud of those years and hope that I’ve helped to some extent in the increase in endowed Chairs as well as overall growth of the Foundation.

We have helped in fundraising for the “Ranger” statues that now grace the campus here in Alva as well as the Enid campus and soon the new Woodward campus. A special thanks to Tom and Brenda McDaniel and Harold and Sue Ann Hamm for their generous contributions that made those symbols of Northwestern a reality.

The construction happening on the Alva campus as well as the new Woodward campus helps all of us and our students to start the university’s 111th year in fi ne fashion. Our students’ academic experience will be enhanced with the use of newly constructed or modernized physical plant as well as scholarship help we at the Foundation continue to provide.

Our investment policies have been continually monitored and the investment mix of 65% equities and 35% other fi xed interest bearing instruments has been attained. We, the members of your Northwestern Foundation Executive Committee and Investment Committee, continue to work hard to make sure our goals are met and most of all that our constituents, our students, are assisted in every way possible to make their university experience a meaningful and long-lasting experience. The goals we have set for your Foundation are lofty ones but I have all the confi dence in the world that those goals will not only be met but that we, together, will exceed them.

It has been my pleasure and privilege to serve on the Foundation Board, The Executive Committee and now for the past two years as your chairman. Thank you for the honor.

Sincerely,

John K. Martin Chairman
