In their mix of design, sculpture, ornament and painting the modules carried some imaginative quality that was implied in their thick three-dimensionality and in the tradition of the relief, as old as painting itself and renewed by the cubists and constructivists of the early avant-gardes. Projected from the wall, the modules emphasized the obsolescence of the frame and expected forms of painting.
