ANNUAL REVIEW 2012/13

Building a United Future Newcastle United Foundation turned five at the end of 2012-13 and, while our charity is one of the youngest in the Premier League, we have come a long way in five years. We exist to take the club into the local community, quite simply, to use the local passion for football to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children, young people and families in our region. Using the Newcastle United brand we have a unique ability to engage, inspire and motivate people that others cannot reach. In five years, we have raised £4million that has been invested directly back into the local community and so far we have worked with 139,000 children, young people and families across a range of sporting, education, youth and health projects. We have selected our “Foundation XI” for 2012/13 to feature in this annual review and we hope you enjoy reading about some of the people we helped last season.

The challenges facing our region when we launched are still prominent today including high levels of poor health, low educational attainment and above average youth unemployment. While our Foundation does not claim to be able to solve all of these issues, we know we have a role in leading change in the region and we take that role very seriously. This report is only a snapshot of our work so if you are inspired by these stories and want to know more about how we can help you or you can help us, please get in touch. We are especially grateful to the residents of Helen McArdle Care who knitted the giant football scarf you see in the photos and to Inter-vention for their sponsorship. The work of the Foundation would not be possible without the supporters who invest both time and money year after year. Thank you.

Cameron and Joshua Rodham Project: Football Coaching “We want children of all abilities to play the beautiful game and reach their own potential”. Tony Threlfall, Football Development Officer Six year old Cameron from Cramlington signed up to a Foundation Holiday Soccer School with his brother Joshua, aged nine. Less than a year later Cameron and Joshua were both invited onto the Foundation’s Advanced Coaching Programme where they impress the coaches every week with their hard work and enthusiasm. The boys have set their sights on stardom at St James’ Park. The Foundation runs in school, after school, weekly, holiday, advanced and girls’ only football coaching all year round.

Harry Purdy Project: Match Fit “It’s the first time Harry has been able to fully join in a sports programme at school”. Debra Purdy Harry is a pupil at Holywell Village First School in Northumberland. In 2013, the eight year old took part in the Foundation’s Match Fit programme along with the rest of his Year 4 class. Harry has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Helped by Foundation staff, Harry fully participated in

the programme demonstrating an improved knowledge of health and nutrition after six weeks. Harry was also asked by Barclays to present Alan Pardew with his ‘Manager of the Month’ award in December 2013. Match Fit is a six week fitness, football and nutrition course for primary school children. Match Fit Families offers the same course for parents and children to learn together.

Jaddai (Jak) Kambeya Project: United 4 Employment “The course boosted my confidence and ultimately helped me get a job. Jaddai (Jak) Kambeya Jak was out of work and lost. He enrolled on the 10 week United 4 Employment programme, which included a two week work placement as an assistant football coach. Jak quickly made friends and got help to update his CV, learn about job search techniques and enrolled at Newcastle College. Full of confidence after graduating from the programme, he soon found a job with a major high street retailer. United 4 Employment offers two week and 10 week courses for unemployed young adults who want to move towards education, training or employment.

The Moore Family Project: Toon Times “The Foundation provides opportunities for the families we work with that they would not normally have. Ant Lea, Key Worker, Crossroads Care The Moore family from Gateshead love football. But as a family with five children and two disabled parents (mum Claire has mental health problems and dad Paul has very severe mobility problems) going out and enjoying a fun activity together is extremely difficult and very rare. When the Foundation linked up with Crossroads Care in Gateshead, the family signed up for Toon Times, creating special memories when they came to their first football match together, Newcastle United v Reading. Toon Times is a Newcastle United heritage education programme for schools and community groups. 2014 will see a major exhibition open at Discovery Museum in Newcastle.

Kasim Azam Project: National Citizen Service (NCS) “NCS was life changing for me. I loved the team building activities most of all as they improved my leadership skills which will help me in the future. Kasim Azam 17 year old Kasim signed up for NCS during Summer 2013 after leaving school. He took part in two residentials, a variety of outdoor activities and even planned a garden makeover for a local community centre. Above all, Kasim loved being part of a team, showing himself to be a natural born leader. He is now studying Business at Newcastle College. NCS is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 16 and 17 year-olds to build skills for work and life, while meeting new friends and taking on new challenges in the local community.

Jamie Foster Project: Football For All “If it wasn’t for the Foundation I wouldn’t be active at all”. Jamie Foster Jamie, 14 from Cowgate, is severely sight impaired. Before he started playing football with the Foundation his favourite hobby was playing Xbox games. Two and a half years later and four stone lighter, Jamie is a confident teenager with aspirations to represent GB at the Paralympics in 2020. Football For All delivers in school football coaching sessions and after school football coaching centres for children and young people with disabilities.

2013 - 2018 Five Year Strategic Plan

Strategic Objectives

Our new five year strategy sets out our priorities for 2013 to 2018. It builds on our previous Business Plan which aimed to establish the Foundation as a well-run and respected regional charity when it was still in its infancy.

We want to help a further 250,000 people by 2018 by focusing on six strategic objectives:

Despite a challenging economic environment for charities, we want to grow and extend our reach into new communities, focusing on delivering our programmes in more schools and community venues. A recent mapping exercise has shown that there are communities and schools we are still not reaching and consultation with participants, stakeholders and partners shows there is a need for our services.

1 Continue to deliver a quality programme of activities which reaches 50,000 people a year 2 Increase the reach of the Foundation and access to its work by the wider community 3 Increase knowledge and understanding of the work of the Foundation and the value it brings to the community 4 Capture the impact of the Foundation’s projects 5 Maintain financial sustainability 6 Maintain high quality and effective management and governance

Dom Collins Project: Foundation Volunteers “Coaching young children is inspiring. Dom Collins Dom, age 24, has been a Foundation volunteer since 2012. After graduating from Sunderland University with a degree in Sports and Exercise Development, he knew he wanted to use his skills and his passion for football to help others. Dom, who has cerebral palsy gives his time once a week as a Volunteer Football Coach, working with other disabled young footballers and families. Volunteers are a vital part of Newcastle United Foundation activities. The individuals who give their time play a crucial role in helping us achieve our aims.

Nicola and Fraser Project: Family Football “An excellent way of getting families to look at their lifestyle and see where to make improvements”. Nicola Mitchison Mum Nicola and son Fraser from Ashington enrolled on a Family Football course in September 2013 at Thomas Bewick Primary School. At first Fraser was reluctant to take part and shy about joining in group activities. During the next six weeks Fraser’s confidence grew and, with some practical ideas from the Foundation, the pair pledged to make small changes that would make a big difference to their family’s health. Not only do they go swimming together once a week, Fraser now plays for his local football team, cheered on by Nicola, his biggest fan! Family Football is a six week course for parents/carers and children to promote enjoyment in learning.

Joe Deverdics Project: Kicks “I’ve gone from doing nothing to enrolling at college and am now the Foundation’s first apprentice community coach”. Joe Deverdics, Apprentice Community Coach Joe, age 18, was a Newcastle United academy player at Under 9 before he was released. He left school at 16 and for a while was not in work, training or education until he spotted a Prince’s Trust Get Started in Football course delivered by the Foundation. Inspired by what he learned, Joe joined the Foundation’s Kicks project, playing football every Friday night with other local young people. He started volunteering at sessions and decided to enrol at TyneMet College. Seeing his potential, the Foundation offered Joe a full time apprenticeship as a Community Coach in September 2013. Kicks uses football to engage hard to reach young people, targeting disadvantaged communities which suffer from higher rates of crime and anti-social behaviour.
