FESTS FOR MONTHs Southern Indiana has all your summer festival wants BY ELIZABETH DEPOMPEI

OUTHERN INDIANA — Once you turn this page, you'll see that your Southern Indiana summer calendar is pretty packed. You can't be in two places at once — life hasn't quite caught up with science fiction yet — so we've narrowed down our list of local festivals to help you make those tough choices from June until August. Admittedly, we had a hard time picking just one festival for each of the summer months, so how about two? From hometown celebrations and SoIn art expositions to festivals that will give you butterflies, here are our top summer fest picks:

START WITH JUNE

Summer doesn't technically start until June 21, but Jeffersonville Mainstreet Inc. is getting a head start on the warm weather fun with its 20th annual JEFF Festival. City pride and family fun will take over Big Four Station from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 3 — and the fun is free. Jeffersonville Mainstreet Executive Director Jay Ellis said that's part of what makes the festival so great. "I think that it's just like a big community picnic, really," Ellis said. The festival's classics will return — face painting, pony rides, inflatables, food and live music. But this year Junior Mainstreet, a youth group spin off of the main or-

ganization, had some new ideas for the festival. In addition to all-day events, the festival will have scheduled events, including a tricycle parade, a potato sack race and a frozen T-shirt race. There will also be oversized games like Kerplunk and Jenga, Ellis added. For more information about JEFF Fest visit www.jeffmainstreet.org. Then turn your eyes to New Albany for another June summer staple: Art on the Parish Green. It's not every day you bump into dozens of regional artists and get to ask them about their techniques and inspirations, or watch them craft what could be their next masterpiece. But on June 10 and 11, you'll be able to do just that. Hosted at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in New Albany, Art on the Parish Green welcomes artists from Southern

Indiana and the surrounding region to show off their work and connect with locals. Event volunteer and parishioner Fran Fach said 80 to 90 artists are expected this year, with roughly 20 percent of those artists being new to the festival. Artists must apply for booths. "One of the things about our festival is that we require that the artist be there," Fach said. "This is a chance for the artist to really meet with the public and develop a personal following, and a chance for the public to see the people who do those earrings that I love (for example)." The art on display in years past has included paintings, metal work, glass blowing, wood work, knitted accessories, jewelry, home goods and more. continued on page 4

The festival also tries to please kids and teenagers, Fach said. The YMCA hosts a Kid's Art Place on the parish green, with face painting and crafts. There's also a booth featuring local high school student's art. Fach said including the kids is about making the event family friendly while encouraging a new generations of artists and art lovers. TURN IT UP A NOTCH IN JULY

While Southern Indiana has plenty to offer in the coming months, it would be a mistake to not mention Louisville's summer highlight: Forecastle. Between July 14 and 16, big-name music acts like Weezer, Cage the Elephant, LCD Soundsystem and Odesza will take the stage at Waterfront Park in Louisville. Tickets for the event have been on sale since March 31, but there are still options for general admission and VIP tickets throughout the weekend. Beyond music, Forecastle offers a uniquely Kentucky feature — bourbon. And lots of it. This year, the festival partnered with the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to track down rare and hard-to-find bourbons, many of which will be exclusive to Forecastle. And if you're craving your Southern Indiana home, just hit the Big Four walking bridge. Visit forecastlefest.com for more information and to purchase tickets.

Monarch butterflies stop on a local crape myrtle tree after being released at the Monarch Celebration in New Albany. 4 / SoIn Days of Summer / 2017

Maybe going elbow to elbow with sweaty concertgoers isn't your thing, or maybe your eardrums just need a break. What better way than to head to the peaceful grounds of a New Albany nursery and witness the flight of a Monarch butterfly? Organized by the Arts Council of Southern Indiana, the 7th annual Monarch Celebration will be held July 15 and 16. Arts Council Board President Matthew Presley said the two-day schedule is an expansion from the usual single afternoon. "We just saw growing crowds over the past few years and we saw the opportunity to bring more events and extend the format of the event to make it a full weekend," Presley said. The event will be held at a new location, too. Instead of setting up butterfly shop in a parking lot, the celebration will take place at Hidden Hill Nursery and Sculpture Garden. Presley said the nursery makes for a better environment for learning about the Monarch butterfly. Large biodomes decorated with light will also make for a new, and likely awe-inspiring addition this year. Families will be able to interact with butterflies inside the tent and gawk at the lighted domes outside. Organizers are also aiming to marry the celebration with the geographical migration path of the Monarch. continued on page 7

CELEBRATE SELLERSBURG IN AUGUST

The people of Sellersburg have celebrated their smalltown community every summer for more than 30 years. Aptly called Sellersburg Celebrates, the three-day festival has grown from filling up a school parking lot to sprawling across a community park while maintaining its charm, said event volunteer Candi Graves.

Graves has attended the event regularly since she was a child. About three years ago, she joined the army of volunteers that make the event possible. "It's just something I wanted to do, to give back some time," Graves said. That's what Sellersburg Celebrates is all about, she said. It's a chance for residents to enjoy their hometown while contributing to the community, whether it's through donations and volunteering, or just showing up. Any money earned during the event goes back to improving the town, such as landscaping or park maintenance. Any little bit can help. And if small-town philanthropy isn't reason enough, go for the food, rides and music. The festival is held at Sellersburg Township park. For more information, visit sellersburgcelebrates.org or search "Sellersburg Celebrates" on Facebook.

After celebrating itself Aug. 24 through Aug. 26, Sellersburg will host yet another beloved summer event. Art in Speed Park is scheduled for Aug. 26 and Aug. 27. In its 27th year, Art in Speed Park dubs itself a "fine arts fair." Artists and artisans who make it through a "rigorous jurying process" will display their art in the park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. "We strive to cultivate community, creativity and culture by increasing public knowledge and appreciation for fine arts and fine crafts by creating opportunities that connect the artists and our community," the event's website reads. There will also be music and food, activities for the kids and a serving of local wines and craft beers. For more information, visit artinspeedpark.com. Need a little more festival in your summer? River Run Family Fun Park is ramping up its offerings this year in its third season as New Albany's premiere spot for family fun in the sun. New this year are swimming lessons, something aquatic center director Brian Gentilini is excited about. The center will be offering three different two-week session for children ages 4 to 14, with six skill levels. “We have such a nice facility and we have a lot of amenities that are perfect for swim lessons,” he said. “And at $30 a swimmer for the full two weeks it's the best deal in town.” Sessions run June 5 to 16, June 19 to 30 and July 10 to 21. As they move forward, Gentilini hopes to offer more new things each year. He said visitors can look for water exercise classes and expanded swim lessons to include mother and baby lessons in the future. continued on page 10

FUN IN THE SUN Southern Indiana parks prepare for summer visitors BY JOHN BOYLE

S

newsroom@newsandtribune.com

OUTHERN INDIANA — With summer approaching, Southern Indiana residents will soon flock to parks in the region to enjoy the warm weather. Officials from local parks have planned several events for the summer months in order to make the season as pleasant as possible for visitors. Events centered around everything from science to cars to movies will give people a variety of reasons to get outside this summer.

NATURE AND HISTORY

Charlestown High School Key Club members tell stories and provide historic information about the Ohio River side entrance to Rose Island in Charlestown State Park during a tour of the former attraction.

Lovers of nature will have no shortage of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in the coming months. Falls of the Ohio State Park will host several events focusing on the Ohio River. On June 3, a free fishing event will be held at the park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adults and children will have the opportunity to fish alongside park officials and DNR fisheries biologists. No fishing license is required to participate. The park will serve as a base location for volunteers during the Ohio River Sweep on June 17. Volunteers will take part in a multistate effort to clean up the banks of the Ohio. Those who participate will receive a free shirt. Groups will gather at 8:30 a.m. and work until 11:30 a.m. Events are also planned at the Falls for archeology and paleontology enthusiasts. The fourth annual Falls Fossil Symposium on Devonian Fossils will take place on Aug. 12-13. Five fossil experts will speak to attendees from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first day. On Sunday, participants will be taken on a field trip from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to view fossils firsthand.

On Sept. 9, "Digging the Past! A Celebration of Archaeology and Fossils" will provide people of all ages the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning activities for $2. During the event, participants will learn how to use stone tools, identify artifacts and take part in a mock dig. Park officials will lead a guided hike to the fossil beds. An earthquake simulator will also be provided by the Indiana Geological Survey. Charlestown State Park will host Full Moon Hikes every month this summer. Hikers will hit park trails at 10 p.m. on the nights of June 9, July 7, Aug. 4 and Sept. 8. At Charlestown State Park, hikers can also participate in the Rose Island History Tour. The amusement park there was a popular destination in the 1920s until it was destroyed by the 1937 Flood, after which it was never rebuilt. From May 26 to Oct. 29, hikers will venture into the abandoned ruins every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.

FAMILY FUN

choose from this summer. Fans of cinema will be able to catch public showings of family-friendly movies at two venues. Starting June 3, the Jeffersonville RiverStage will host its "RiverStage Twilight Cinema" series. Films will be shown every Saturday night except for June 24 and July 29. Games and entertainment will open at 7:30 p.m., and showtimes will start once it becomes dark outside. Clarksville Parks and Recreation begins its "Movies in the Park" series on June 2. The event will be held at Gateway Park on the first Friday of every month until October, with movies slated to begin at dusk. On Aug. 4, families can show up to Gateway Park before that evening's movie for the annual "Touch-ATruck" event. At the event, kids will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at a variety of vehicles such as police cars, fire trucks, construction equipment and limousines. A full night of fun can be enjoyed at the Clarksville Family Campout at Colgate Park on June 9. During the

day, families can walk from their campsite and pay $5 a person to visit Clarksville Cove Family Aquatic Center, where they will be allowed to remain one hour after the center closes to the public. Registration ends June 2, and a fee of $10 will be charged for each campsite. For families in New Albany, Binford Park is hosting the "Tots Bubbles and Balloons Blast" on June 20. A bubble party featuring games and music will be thrown for children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with two one-hour sessions at a cost of $1. A maximum of 40 children will be allowed in each session, so preregistration is required by calling 812-948-5361.

OTHER EVENTS

Owners of classic cars, muscle cars and hot rods are invited to congregate at Gateway Park on June 23 for the "Clarksville Cruise-In and Concert." The first 150 car owners to arrive will receive a free dash plaque. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., car lovers will be able to browse through the assortment of vehicles on display. Afterwards, a free

The registration deadline for vendors is Aug. 9. For $20, vendors get two spaces in the parking lot for their booths. A $10 fee will be charged for late registration. Booths will be set up at 7 a.m., with the sale running from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

BEATLES: Abbey Road on the River a family-friendly event CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13

Abbey Road on the River will headquarter at Big Four Station, a park that Jacob said will transform the dynamics of the event. While Abbey Road was technically in downtown Louisville, the stages were sequestered from the commercial district. In Jeffersonville, it’s quite the opposite. “People are going to be leaving and going to the restaurants on Spring ... there’s going to be a different sense of urbanism,” Jacob said. While many diehard fans will be back this year, Jacob expects to tap into a new audience, too. “You’ve got thousands of people crossing the [Big Four] bridge anyways, so now they’ll be looking and seeing four stages going full throttle,” Jacob said. “Some of those people may decide to get off the bridge and go to the festival.” Hoosiers who have never been to Abbey Road on the River should consider taking on chance on it this year, he said. “When you come, you’re just going to be in the environment of hanging out in the sun, having a beer, having a 16 / SoIn Days of Summer / 2017

corndog, hanging out with your kids listening to music,” Jacob said. “And if you’re a devout Beatles fan, then you can get into it in a deeper sense. Just going to well-organized music festivals, where there’s music all over the place and it’s safe and clean — it’s close to a religious experience. It’s a way to get everything out from the work week.” Jacob emphasized Abbey Road is a family-friendly event — in fact he

believes it’s the most family-friendly music festival in the region. Bewley said it’s important Southern Indiana “rolls out the red carpet” to welcome in the festival. “I think one of the biggest things about this event is there has not been a large Indiana presence when it was in Louisville, so I think now having it in Indiana is a time for us Hoosiers to get out and really showcase that we can support events like this,” she said.

• FOOD AND DRINK — Fair food will be sold by mobile vendors, as well as Budweiser products and mixed drinks by Four Roses. Guests can also dine at the many restaurants within walking distance of the park. • PARKING — There are several thousand parking spots within walking distance of the park, including $10 daily VIP parking passes. Check out the website for a detailed map. • MORE — Festival will also feature guest speakers, including international Beatles scholars, as well as merchandise and large sculptures from the Jeffersonville Art Alliance to take pictures with. — Information from arotr.com

Summertime Soundtrack Sounds abound at concerts across Southern Indiana BY DANIELLE GRADY

N

danielle.grady@newsandtribune.com

othing pairs quite as well with a summer evening as live music. Outdoor concerts are the go-to Friday night activity for Jessica Bergman, her husband, Matt, and their 7-year-old son. “He can go around and get ice cream and dance and play, and we can actually sit down for a minute and have a beer and listen to good music,” Jessica said. The Bergman family attends New Albany’s Bicentennial Park Summer Concert Series, but there are plenty of live music events in Southern

Indiana to choose from during the warmer months. Some, like Jeffersonville’s Coca-Cola Summer Concerts Series and Concerts in Warder Park are held weekly. Others, like the ones planned by Clarksville’s Parks Department, occur alongside other family-friendly events. Still others, like Indiana University Southeast’s Summer Pops Concert are annual, one-time events that draw loyal crowds. All are a chance to put a soundtrack to those endless summer days.
