the building, which suggests that this and some of the other carved stonework were not designed for the gatehouse but were brought up from Low Furness and used here second hand. The rooms on the ground level no longer contain any special features but are in the positions usually occupied by the guardroom and porter’s lodge. In 1537 the abbey was dissolved and its estates dissipated. The courthouse was given to the National Trust in 1932 by the owner Mr H.S. Cowper, F.S.A.
