Annual Report 2010 Foundation

01

Letter from the President I am delighted to present this annual report of the NSU Foundation. Over the past several years, the foundation and alumni staff members have re-dedicated themselves to the mission of directly contributing to the university’s success by increasing the number of NSU alumni and friends who directly assist the institution. As this report will confirm, they and you continue to raise the bar of accomplishment and opportunity. Since our last report, John Gyllin has accepted an opportunity in Florida near his family. We appreciate John’s enthusiasm and dedication and wish him genuine success. Vice President Mark Kinders and his team searched diligently for the next development leader. I am pleased that Peggy Glenn-Summitt, a 1990 NSU graduate, was enticed to return and employ her myriad experience and skills to lead our overall development strategy. I urge you to connect with her as she has actively moved into this leadership position. I offer a particular note of appreciation to the foundation and alumni board members. Each offers their time, talent, and resources in dedicated and appreciated service to the university. Their devotion is mirrored by the foundation and alumni staff members who constitute one of the most successful teams at NSU. As this report reflects, this past year was filled with activities and projects designed to realize the goals of our plan, Charting the Second Century. Despite the historic global and national economic challenges, Northeastern and its foundation and alumni association continue to attract new donors and active alumni members. The data is encouraging. For 2010, NSU’s total number of donors and scholarship dollars awarded were the highest in our history. This was the second year of the NSU President’s Circle, where we honor donors who contribute $1,000 or more annually. Over the past year, the President’s Circle membership has increased by 26 percent. For the generosity and continuing faith in NSU and its direction of all of NSU’s supporters, we are truly grateful.

NSU’s horizon is bright with new projects and a sense of growing confidence in our capacities to meet the continuing challenge of change that surrounds us. We are avidly pursuing the completion of the Capitola “Cappi” Wadley Center for Reading and Technology in Bagley Hall in Tahlequah. Due to the faith and generosity of Gregg Wadley and Dr. Betsy Brackett, this important center for learning will begin to serve the needs of teachers and students throughout the region within the next academic year. Soon we will have advanced architectural renderings for the NSU Multipurpose Arena at Tahlequah. You will be receiving additional information on this major project in the coming weeks. NSU’s Tahlequah landscape continues to change with multiple projects underway. In April, we dedicated Second Century Trail on the Broken Arrow campus, providing healthy lifestyle opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and the community. And at Muskogee, the roof is on the emerging third building as our joint venture with Connors State College moves from idea to active learning space. This collaborative effort by both institutions will directly benefit the citizens of Muskogee and the surrounding region. The core of NSU’s mission is creating a culture of learning that serves the interests of the people of eastern Oklahoma. This pledge translates daily into the actions of over 1,000 faculty and staff, and nearly 10,000 students into a vibrant learning and living community, rich in history and eager to write its story of service and success in the coming years. Northeastern State’s future is as bright as our collective commitment to help students learn and to provide the funds required to effectively support the faculty and staff. I invite you to commit and connect to NSU and the people who create exceptional opportunities for learning.

Dear Friends,

Employee giving has also increased with the College of Education achieving a 60 per cent giving ratio. Giving levels from employees, alumni, foundations, and friends are vital to the university’s future. State Employee giving has also increased with the College of Education achieving a 60 percent giving ratio. Giving levels from employees, alumni, foundations, and friends are vital to the university’s future. State support has declined over many years, and there is little indication that this level of support will increase soon. Yet the cost of delivering quality education has not declined.

Letter from the Director

northeastern state university foundation | 2010 annual report

Dear Friends,

02

In my new role here at my alma mater, I look forward to meeting you, reintroducing you to NSU, and showing you how your donations make a difference in our students’ lives. In fact, I’m one of many examples of former scholarship recipients who have returned to NSU to make sure that current students continue to have the resources available to learn, discover, and become informed citizens. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, John Gyllin, and the Interim Director of Development and Executive Director of the NSU Foundation, Jerry Cook, who made sure we stayed the course as we continue to chart our second century. In fact, during this transition, we celebrated all-time highs in number of donors (2,299) and dollars for scholarships ($502,782). We will build on this expanded donor base to help more students, provide enhanced facilities for them and the community, and make sure NSU continues to meet the economic needs of our region. Many people have asked me about the biggest changes at NSU since my student days over 20 years ago. The most obvious change is the addition of impressive campuses in Muskogee and Broken Arrow. But a close second is the role of technology on all three campuses. Class discussions continue beyond the classroom via blogs and virtual blackboards, speaker presentations can be streamed live to the other campuses, students have wireless access to the Internet almost anywhere on campus, class polls can be taken within minutes via cell phone, and paper forms have been placed online. The NSU Alumni Association’s real-time posts on Facebook updated fans across the country on the women’s basketball team’s nail-biting victory over Abilene Christian University in the Lone Star Conference Tournament,

and a few days later, NSU’s selection as host for the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Women’s Basketball Tournament was streamed live from Indianapolis to the Webb Educational Technology Center. Technology has transformed every aspect of the university, including development, alumni services, and the NSU Foundation. For example, this Annual Report is being published online. Donors can make monetary gifts at www.nsugiving.com and receive an e-mail acknowledgement almost immediately. The alumni association is surveying members and nonmembers online to guide its strategic plan and enhance the benefits and opportunities offered. The Green & White Network is a monthly alumni e-mail highlighting what’s new at NSU. Phonathons are more automated, though the person who calls you is still an actual student benefiting from a scholarship provided through the foundation. Indeed, with all this technology, personal interactions are more valued. So we look forward to seeing you at Homecoming October 10-15 and Emerald Ball December 10 or as part of the train ride to NSU’s opening football game in San Antonio over Labor Day. We’d love for you to drop us a line to let us know about the birth of a child or grandchild, a professional award, or your new job. We invite you to give us a phone call when you’ve moved so we can update your records and continue to provide you the latest NSU news. We also ask that you let us know when you’re in Tahlequah and come visit us at the Branscum Alumni Center. We hope to thank you in person for your support, which helps NSU retain its strong sense of community and history while embracing change and graduating students who are socially responsible and globally aware. But until then, on behalf of former and current NSU scholarship recipients who — like me — received a quality college education their families could not otherwise afford, thank you!

reating the NSU Foundation’s first vocal music scholarship program for the university was more than just a way to help talented singers realize their goal of a college education for Lloyd and Linda (’92) Spyres. It was also a way to honor Linda’s mother, Zelma Lou (Rogers) Summers, and share her passion for music with future generations of NSU students. “She has been a sweet mother her whole life and she had a lovely voice,” Linda says with tears in her eyes as she recounts her mother’s many talents. “She’s a wonderful woman and a great mother-in-law,” Lloyd echoes. A talented singer, including opera, “Lou” honed her vocal music talents while attending college in the Portland, Oregon area. “She has such a beautiful voice and studied voice in college as her major,” recalls Linda. “She could sing opera, and was proficient in so many things.” With a wealth of talented vocalists in northeastern Oklahoma, the Spyres wanted to help future singers realize their dreams of a college education through the scholarship. “I understand the NSU Foundation has never had a vocal music scholarship,” says Linda. “We have so many talented students who participate in the university choir and the music shows during the summer. Many kids can’t afford a college education in this economy, so a little bit of aid can go a long way for them.”

Lloyd & Linda Spyres

04

After moving to Tahlequah in 1989, Linda studied psychology, sociology, and humanities at Northeastern. Linda and Lloyd, a retired meteorologist, run a local travel agency in Tahlequah, Vacations R Us. The couple also devotes time to volunteer activities including the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Cherokee Country, Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the American Association

of University Women. Both have also served on the Tahlequah City Council; Lloyd served in the ‘90s and Linda was recently elected to her first term. “My dad was a chaplain in the Army and he always told me that service was important to those who needed it,” says Linda. “Both of our parents instilled that sense of community service in us.” “We’ve passed that concept on to our children, as well,” adds Lloyd. “You can’t take it with you, so you might as well use it to help others.” The Spyres, who recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary, have taken a special interest in the Northeastern State basketball teams in the past several years. The couple initiated the annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser during the fall semester to raise money for the basketball teams, and have recruited help from their son in serving the meal. During the basketball and football seasons, they can also be found cheering on the RiverHawks at nearly every home game. “We love the university and all the opportunities it gives back to the community,” says Linda. “You don’t have to give a lot. You can give a small portion every year, time or money, as every little bit helps.”

Honoring the Past

The wall has received financial support from several campus and alumni groups, including NSU Rugby, Fast Forties, Nifty Fifties, Lambda Chi Alpha, and the President’s Leadership Class. These groups will be honored with etched bricks, paver stones, or a bleacher plaque incorporated into the project. “The wall, in so many ways, reminds us of the history of this university in all of its forms and the great history of this institution as the home of the Redmen,” said NSU President Don Betz. The monument, located on the foundation of the original rock wall that served as bleachers on the site of the 1936 Gable Field next to John Vaughan Library and Haskell Hall Annex, will highlight the unique heritage of Northeastern and celebrate the institution’s 84 year history as the Redmen once it is completed.

“The area was really beautiful because the old stadium was such a historic thing,” said Ron Cox, director of the NSU Fitness Center and a ’64 graduate of NSU. “We watched so many great players play here and made so many great friends.”

The wall will honor all Redmen who attended classes at Northeastern from 1924 to 2007, with an emphasis on athletics, but also recognizing the contributions of the band and student organizations.

The wall is one of the oldest remaining structures on campus and dates back to the time that Northeastern adopted the name Redmen.

The Redmen mascot was officially adopted in October 1924, chosen by a vote of the faculty to replace the name “Warriors.” The university officially adopted the RiverHawks mascot in fall 2007.

“The wall surrounding the stadium was built during the Great Depression of the 1930s and was primarily built by manual labor,” said Dr. Jack Dobbins, retired NSU athletic director and a ’51 graduate. “There was very little, if any mechanized equipment so it was constructed by laborers using picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows. They did an amazing job.”

“It’s not just a tribute to athletes, it’s a tribute to anyone who had any association with the university from 1924 to 2007,” said Dobbins. “To me, they are all Redmen and they are a part of the history of the wall.”

“This is the ideal location to have a monument and create a bridge between the Redmen and the RiverHawks,” said Tim Foutch, Vice President for Operations and an ’81 graduate of NSU. “The Redmen and the RiverHawks — it’s a marriage that was originally difficult, but now it’s one that we are very

proud of and one that we need to reinforce through this symbol. This wall is a natural foundation to build on.” Foutch said the construction project is “60 to 75 percent” complete and that nearly all concrete work is finished.”We have some stairs on the west side that must be completed, then the concrete construction will be done,” he said. “We also have lighting on order. We will install retro-style lighting reminiscent of the period that the stadium was built.” Other construction to be completed includes the installation of benches, seats and images etched in marble and granite, which will be mounted to the wall. Those interested in helping complete construction of the Redmen Heritage Wall may access a dedicated Web page and make online contributions at www.nsugiving.com/centennialcampaign/redmen.php.

ake a step into Bagley Hall or the Broken Arrow Education Building, and you’ll discover what can happen through the generosity of Northeastern’s faculty and staff.

The College of Education has created resource rooms for students on each campus with funds donated through the Employee Giving Program. “Our faculty and staff in the College of Education saw the results of their giving happen right before their eyes,” said Anita Thompson, Development and Grants Officer for the College of Education. “These resource rooms allow our students the opportunity to practice with math manipulatives, materials for making bulletin boards, and other resources they will need once they are classroom teachers or counselors,” added College of Education Dean Kay Grant.

The college developed a strategic plan that includes goals and strategies to focus the efforts of faculty and staff in creating a successful learning environment for students. “The strategic plan allows our people to see what needs to happen,” said Thompson. “The employee giving program allows donors to specifically designate what project or department they want to donate to.”

The College of Education saw 60 percent of its faculty and staff participate in the Employee Giving Program in 2010, the largest margin of any college or department on campus. “With the third floor

to give back to the university. Sweeney graduated with a degree in biology in ’94 and Master of Education in ’05. Dr. Grant often uses the example of the ants and the potato chip. “One ant can’t move the chip alone, but working together, from the smallest to the biggest, they really can make a difference. We incorporate that idea in everything we do,”Grant said. “We want to give everyone the chance to be included, to feel like they have the opportunity to give and support the college. We focus on synergy; we want everyone to participate, no matter how small.” The college is raising the bar for 2011 with a goal of 70 percent participation in the employee giving program. “We’ve tried to foster and develop a sense of camaraderie, the idea that we really can make a difference if we all pitch in together,” said Grant. “Our faculty and staff have really stepped up to help.”

The couple had three daughters, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dr. Leon P. Woods, Jr. 1932-2011 Growing up in Tahlequah, Northeastern State University was like a second home for Dr. Leon P. Woods, who passed away January 2, 2011 in Fort Smith, AR. Born September 11, 1932 in Muskogee, OK, Leon was the son of Leon Perry and Mary Evelyn Ruble Woods. His father taught math and served as dean of men at Northeastern. He met the love of his life in eighth grade, Mary Ann Daniel, to whom he was married 56 years.

After graduating from NSU in 1953, Leon attended the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1956. He worked three years in the United States Public Health Service before beginning his surgical residency in Denver, CO. He completed his surgical training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and went on to serve as chief of general surgery at the Durham, NC Veterans Hospital, and assistant professor of surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. In 1966, he joined the Holt Krock Clinic in Fort Smith, AR, where he practiced thoracic and cardiovascular surgery until his retirement in 1992. He enjoyed giving back during his retirement, serving on numerous community boards, including the NSU Foundation, Fort Smith Little Theatre, and Fort Smith Crime Stoppers. He also donated the L.P. Woods House to NSU in 1987.

Dr. Marjorie Holland 1922-2011 A devoted teacher and public servant, Dr. Marjorie Holland passed away March 6, 2011 in Tulsa. A 2011 NSU Centurion, Marjorie was a retired NSU professor of English, and had served as dean of the College of Arts and Letters and dean of the Graduate College. Marjorie was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Hope, AR, the daughter of Clell Andrew and Lucille (King) Dildy. She graduated from primary school at Hope, and attended

While attending the university, she met and married Kenneth Holland, on July 11, 1948. The couple had one son, Michael. Marjorie and Kenneth dedicated their lives to educating young minds to become passionate leaders for the future. She taught at East High, a preparatory school in Memphis, and English at Arkansas A&M University at Monticello before coming to NSU in 1963. Marjorie’s contributions to the university included expanding the curricula of the graduate college from six master’s degrees in education to two master’s of arts degrees, four master’s of science degrees and seven master’s of education degrees. She served on the North Central Accreditation and Faculty Research Committees, and the NSU Foundation Board of Trustees.

McCabes establish mission endowment

The Student Volunteers for Optometric Service to Humanity chapter at NSUOCO received a mighty boost in funding from Henry and Jo Ann McCabe.

McCabe, chairman and CEO of McCabe Industrial Minerals Inc. of Tulsa, said he and Jo Ann were inspired to help those abroad in need of eye care after reading an issue of National Geographic Adventure magazine featuring the Himalayan Cataract Project.

HOYA, NSU create Mankiller optometry scholarship

HOYA Vision Care will donate $25,000 to the NSU Foundation over the next five years to fund the HOYA Vision Care Wilma Mankiller Scholarship for Native American Students at NSUOCO.

NSUOCO and HOYA supported naming the scholarship for the late Mankiller. Dr. Michelle Welch, associate dean of NSUOCO and director of clinical services, remembered the former principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, and NSU’s first Sequoyah Fellow, as a positive, strong leader. Applicants for the HOYA Vision Care Wilma Mankiller Scholarship must be American Indian, hold a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average, and be entering their first or second year of studies at NSUOCO. First-year students will receive preference.

Bezan scholarship Focuses on geriatrics

Dr. Debra Bezan, emeritus faculty member, has established the Dr. Debra Bezan Geriatric Optometry Scholarship endowment through the NSU Foundation. A member of the first class to graduate from NSUOCO in 1983, Bezan established a private practice in Muskogee and joined the college as an adjunct instructor. After a short stay in California, she returned to private practice in Tulsa and teaching at NSUOCO. Bezan developed a passion for treating older patients. Her practice encompassed nursing home and home care patients and she taught geriatric eye care courses. The Bezan scholarship will be awarded to students entering their final year of optometry study. Applicants must possess a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and demonstrate a particular interest in geriatrics and aptitude for working with older patients.

rowing up, the three Walker brothers spent many days visiting the Northeastern campus, waiting to pick up their father, Dr. James Walker, at the entrance to historic Seminary Hall. The brothers chose to remember their father and his 31 years in the NSU English department by placing a memorial bench outside the south entrance of the building.

12

“We picked that location because it’s where we picked up Dad every day when we were kids,” says Dr. Matt Walker, a Tahlequah dentist and member of the NSU Foundation Board of Trustees. “It was a nice tribute for my father from his family.” The Walker family’s ties to NSU are strong. Matt and his brothers, Andrew and John, are all NSU alumni and were the first group of three siblings to graduate from the University of Oklahoma School of Dentistry. Their grandfather, Dr. C.L. Lombardi, was the 50th faculty member hired at NSU, teaching industrial arts for nearly 40 years. Their grandmother, Dr. Betty Lombardi,

was a long-time NSU English instructor. “Buying a bench to honor our dad was a way for my family to contribute to the beautification of campus,” says Matt. “When I was growing up, people were always commenting on the beauty of our school and the campus.” Benches may be purchased through the NSU Foundation for $1,500. Donors may select an area on campus to place the bench, including areas significant to the person or people being honored. “It’s a good opportunity to honor someone you care about and to contribute and beautify the university,” says Matt.

Ways to Give

S northeastern state university foundation | 2010 annual report

upport for Northeastern and the NSU Foundation comes in many forms. Flexible options allow you to demonstrate your commitment and maximize your support of the university’s mission. All gifts to the NSU Foundation are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the law.

Gifts of Cash Cash is the most common form of gift that comes to the NSU Foundation. Your gift of cash, like other gifts, can be directed to a fund, specific scholarship, or program. Gifts of Securities or Real Property Contributions of stock or real estate with appreciated value are another way to lend support. When the NSU Foundation acquires your gift of appreciated stock or property, you receive a tax deduction equal to its fair market value and avoid costly capital gains tax on the increase in value. Gifts-in-Kind Your donations of software, licenses, services, vendor products, and other property also support the mission and programs of NSU. These gifts-in-kind allow us to use our resources for other needs while you get a credit for your support. Contact us for guidelines and acceptance policy regarding gifts-in-kind. Charitable Gift Annuities A deferred gift, such as a charitable gift annuity, is a great way to make a significant contribution. In exchange for your gift of cash or property, the NSU Foundation guarantees you a lifetime of income. Charitable Remainder Trust Your charitable remainder trust can be funded during your lifetime or through a testamentary disposition. Each provides life income for designated beneficiaries, which can include you.

14

Life Insurance Naming the NSU Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of your life insurance policy is also an option, especially when your policy has a face amount that is much greater than the amount you can afford to give in cash. This ensures that future premium payments made by you are tax-deductible. Pay the entire policy, or make annual contributions to the NSU Foundation for the cost of premiums.

Wills and Trusts The NSU Foundation can also be named as beneficiary in the wills and trusts of Northeastern alumni and friends. You can elect to leave all or part of an estate to benefit the University. The NSU Foundation Guardian Society honors individuals with outstanding discernment—a special group of visionaries who look beyond the here and now to the then and there. This “Hall of Fame,” as it is often called, includes friends of Northeastern who are heroes to the students whose lives are changed through their generosity. By naming the NSU Foundation in their wills, these individuals have designated all or a portion of their estate to be used for endowment or other special purposes. Honorees also include those who have arranged a charitable gift annuity with the NSU Foundation. These philanthropic Hall of Famers are sharing their assets with NSU, while maintaining an economic stream for their lifetime. Members of the Guardian Society include donors who have placed major assets in a charitable trust, to meet personal income needs in their lives, and to benefit the NSU Foundation in the years ahead. They deserve a standing ovation for their foresight. Other members have made the NSU Foundation a beneficiary of their life insurance or retirement plan accounts. These donors invest in the future of Northeastern, and in doing so, reaffirm their commitment to permanence.

The Ultimate Gift Wills and Estate Planning The will is the most widely used estate-planning tool in America today. A simple document that is easily drafted and updated, it remains the most popular method of planned giving for almost every charity, including the NSU Foundation.

 Restricted

Bequest Any of the above bequests with a specific purpose for the property, such as establishing a scholarship or endowment

Leave a Lasting Legacy with an endowment When you establish an endowment with the NSU Foundation, you …  Enable

Perpetual Support Your gift toward an endowed fund creates never-ending support for students, faculty, and programs.

 Ensure

a Strong Future Your endowment is an investment in the future of Northeastern State University. As it grows, the university gains additional support.

 Enact

a Lasting Legacy Your endowed fund is a wonderful way to pay tribute to a family member, loved one, classmate, or professor. Created in perpetuity, your endowment has a long lasting legacy associated with NSU. Endowed funds are reminders of the great support provided by those who came before.

While a will can be a simple and effective option for many, a trust might allow assets to be distributed to heirs without the delays or costs of probate. Be sure to consult with a qualified professional before you draft your will or trust, and review it often. Sample language is available for any of the bequests listed above. For additional information on wills, bequests, or planned giving in general, please contact the NSU Foundation at 918.458.2143.
