GETTING THE NURSERY READY FRONT DOORS WITH IMPACT

B2 - athome - Sunday, April 22, 2012

Tired of mowing the lawn each week?

Lose it!

North Shore landscape designer Susan Wyatt tells how Losing the lawn is very low maintenance, water wise, and has great visual and curb appeal, says Wyatt. “It’s budget- and timefriendly as you save money on mowing, feeding, edging, and having regular maintenance done such as aerating and moss removal.” Last summer, Wyatt helped a North Vancouver family lose their lawn, and replaced it with a new low-maintenance look for the front garden that included a seating area and a water feature. “We decided to remove the lawn and existing garden altogether and “go lawnless” as the existing garden had many problems and was no longer appealing to the clients,” says Wyatt. She replaced the existing lawn and garden with a combination of a new circular seating area, a water feature with three basalt gurglers, and a dry creekbed flowing down the slope, all surrounded by plants that are water wise and low maintenance.

“When doing a garden this way, visual elements — rock, water features, and ornaments — play a much bigger role for needed impact.” Ornamental grasses and sun-loving perennials were used extensively throughout for this sunny south -facing site. The clients are continuing to add plants at their own pace. Landscape fabric was used under the composted bark mulch. Bark mulch needs to be topped up every two to three years, and a light raking is needed occasionally to keep its appearance fresh. Going lawnless is a very bold step but if you want to save time on garden maintenance and still have a great looking garden, it’s the way to go, says Wyatt. Make your garden great

The addition of a water feature to a garden offers a visual treat and can bring a sense of serenity to the space. Ponds can be included in any size of property. They can be tucked in the corner of a patio or extend to cover a large area.

You don’t have to spend hundreds (or thousands) on a landscape architect to add major impact to your garden. Look at these simple — and affordable — ways to pump up the wow factor.

Initially you will have to decide what type of pond you want and how big it will be. Linda Adkins guides you through a full range of choices before moving on to the construction phase. There are a number of options to contain the water for your pond, including pre-formed molds made from plastic or fiberglass, pvc liners, or concrete. Adkins discusses the pros and cons for

1 Never underestimate the power of planters. Set them

around the edge of your patio to separate the space from the yard or put them right in the garden. Fill them with tall ornamental grass for added privacy as well as visual interest. For a designer touch, pick an affordable and chic looking artisanal planter like an authentic terra cotta pot in celebrity potter Guy Wolff’s collection, available exclusively in Canada in select Loblaw banner stores.

each material and what types of finishing would be required for each one. Fountains, waterfalls, cascades are all presented in detail as means to improve the health of your pond and also add interest. She provides an explanation on the filtration choices, as well as recommendations for water, plants, and fish. Whether you are considering a small water feature to add a focal point to your garden or an expansive pond with loads of surrounding plantings, Adkins advice will help steer you in the right direction. 2 Vines can be so helpful — especially if the view of

your backyard includes a chainlink fence or the side of a shed or garage. Use colourful, fast-growing vines like Honeysuckle or Virginia Creeper. If you’re beautifying a wall, you’ll need a lattice, which you can buy in sheets at the hardware store.

3 Hanging baskets always look stunning on a porch or a

veranda. Choose a bright basket and use multiples to create a look of balance, such as the new PCGigantico Suncatcher Pink Lemonade Petunia featured in the 2012 President’s Choice Lawn and Garden Insider’s Report. It’s an easy way to brighten up a deck, balcony or front porch.

4 The sound and motion of water gently falling from a

fountain brings serenity to your garden — and looks fantastic. Place a water feature in the corner of your patio or right in the garden bed, as long as it’s on a sturdy base.

5 Lighting adds so much to a garden. Aim a spotlight

up the base of a tree into the branches for some real drama. Strings of white lights around bushes are a special touch—and you can even place them throughout topiary forms to emphasize the shapes.

6 Accessories are affordable and make a difference.

Add some instant character by setting up an antiquestyle bench padded with comfy cushions. Or hang a mesh hammock under some shady trees and drape it with a cozy fleece blanket.

Baby on the way Expecting parents eagerly anticipate the arrival of their new bundle of joy. After nine months of waiting to see what he or she looks like and wanting to cuddle their newborn, the baby’s arrival is a momentous event. As most people know, for such a little person, babies seemingly need a ton of gear and other items. One thing the baby will eventually need is a nursery to call home. Although newborns do spend the first few months of their lives often tucked in at night in a bassinet or co-sleeper cradle in mom’s bedroom, chances are your infant will nap or gradually spend increasing amounts of time in his or her own room. Outfitting the nursery with the essentials can mean comfort and convenience.

To some parents, every baby product out there is a necessity. But in reality, there are maybe a handful of things to put into the nursery — at least for the time being — to adequately provide for the baby. • CRIB - At some point in the near future, baby will be doing most of his or her sleeping exclusively in the crib. Although that can seem like a far-off goal now that your little one prefers to sleep in your arms while watching late-night television, after a few months junior will become comfortable with his or her room and may even enjoy the security the crib provides. Before selecting a crib, be sure to check for recalls and ensure the brand and model are not on the list. The crib should be sturdy and meet guidelines for minimum spacing between spindles. Older, hand-me-down cribs are not recommended. Although dropside cribs may offer ease of placing baby inside, some of these types of cribs have been recalled in the past for faulty railings that trap the infant. A stationary sided crib is another choice.

Outfitting the nursery with the essentials can mean comfort and convenience. Position the crib away from items that can be pulled into the crib by curious hands. Try to keep it away from windows for draft reasons and also to avoid window-fall accidents. Cribs should be free of breathing obstructions, like stuffed animals or puffy side bumpers. • CHANGING TABLE - Most parents prefer a convenient changing table that also stores diapers and toiletries. Although it may not always be possible to travel to the nursery for every diaper change, you can still equip the nursery with a table or another sturdy place to change your infant. Some dressers double as changing tables in their design. A small loveseat or a guest bed in the nursery can also be a place to change the baby and provide a comfortable place to rest when he or she is waking up in the middle of the night. It is important never to leave a baby unattended on any surface because you never know the moment when he or she will learn to roll over or move enough to fall off of the changing surface. • SAFETY DEVICES - Although infants are too young to get into much trouble, babies eventually become very active and curious. Take the time now to baby-proof the nursery. Select window coverings that cannot be pulled down or do not feature cords that can present a strangulation hazard.

All outlets should be blocked with a safety plug or some sort of cover to deter little fingers from seeking them out. Secure cords to lamps and other electronic devices in cord keepers. Latches for drawers, closets and other doors can deter baby from getting into places that can be dangerous. Door knob covers enable adults to open doors but are too tricky for toddlers to figure out.

When selecting furniture, look for items with rounded corners, which are safer should a child fall into the furniture. And use a latch to secure top-heavy dressers or armoires to the wall so they cannot fall on a child. • MENTAL STIMULATION - Young children are constantly exploring the world around them. At a very young age their vision is still developing, so large, bold visuals can help stimulate visual comprehension. Some parents opt to have vivid wall murals painted in the nursery. But bold, framed artwork or photos can also draw the eye of your little one and keep him or her engaged. Research indicates that listening to music can help stimulate the brain and may even benefit a child’s intellect. Music can also be soothing to a baby, especially one alone in his or her nursery. You can consider a small radio or CD/MP3 player in the room to create a more soothing atmosphere.

Make an Entrance Beauti-Tone, Canada’s Paint Experts, has identified the 10 best shades to add show stopping colour to that powerful little rectangle, the front door. Bev Bell, creative director of Home Hardware Stores’ Beauti-Tone Paint and Home Products Division says: “Your front door sets the impression for your entire house and is truly a space to let colour speak volumes. The right colour can make a design statement that is powerful, welcoming and drop dead gorgeous. It will make your neighbours’ jaws drop, for all the right reasons.” Selecting the perfect shade is key. Outdoors, colours look very different, less intense than they do indoors. “To compensate, you need to throw caution to the wind and go bold. Choose saturated hues that are darker than the colours you would have envisioned for your front door,” says Bell. “And make sure to take it outside. See how different lighting will affect the colour by viewing a colour sample on the door over the course of a day, from first thing in the morning to late at night.” Beauti-Tone’s 10 Best Front Door Colours were chosen for their strong character, welcoming personality and stunning good looks. BeautiTone Canada’s paint experts have rated the colours to have excellent colour fastness (won’t fade) and high coverage (less work).

To ensure you come home to a place that looks just the way you always dreamed, marry that perfect front door colour with these two simple hints: • If you have an aluminum storm door, make sure it stops weather, not traffic. Make a strong colour statement by using Beauti-Tone latex Rust Coat to paint storm doors to match entry doors. That way, they won’t grab all the attention. • Don’t let your garage door take top billing over your front door. If painted the same colour, your eye is drawn to the larger block of colour, the garage! Instead, try painting the garage doors in a similar colour to the surrounding exterior wall for a more cohesive look. Manufactured in Canada by Home Hardware, Beauti-Tone is sold at Home Hardware, Home Hardware Building Centre, and Home Building Centre stores across the country. For decorating ideas and information on BeautiTone paint drop in to your local Home Hardware store or visit Beauti-Tone under the Paint and Decor tab at www.homehardware.ca. PHOTO CANSTOCK

Even with our increased awareness of healthier living, it can be difficult to always make the best and most efficient choices. These values apply to the houses we live in as well. For example, with initiatives like the R-2000 Standard and Energy Star for New Homes, you can work with your builder to incorporate energy efficiency upgrades into your home before it’s built, to ensure that the upgrades you choose reflect your family’s lifestyle. Seventh Generation says the new package uses 66 per cent less plastic than a conventional standard-size detergent bottle while it cleans the same number of loads. The container’s plastic spout and cap are also recyclable at curbside, though the flexible plastic liner is not. (North Shore Recycling currently accepts only rigid plastics with the recycling symbol and marked 1,2,4 or 5.) Also new is the formulation of the detergent itself, which is now twice as concentrated as before, resulting in double the water and shipping energy savings. It’s biodegradable, hypoallergenic, and free of dye and synthetic fragrance. Seventh Generation’s Natural 4X Laundry Detergent, in scented Geranium Blossoms & Vanilla or unscented Free & Clear, is regularly priced at $19 and good for 66 loads.
