letter from editor well imagine every type of weather going on at one time. freezing blizzards with ferrous lighting and hurricanes with 3 tornados and a huge monsoon . would be a crazy experience right well thats what you get when you read this magazine. shane, doing this project i learned a lot about hurricanes how they form. the different levels and damage they can do overall it was very fun and helpful. justin, from this project, i have become an expert about blizzards and everything about them. i have learned about what damages they can do, how harmful they are, how they form, and how to be safe during a blizzard. overall this project has greatly increased my knowledge in blizzards. Bay. From this project I learned how to be safe from storms and how they form. IF you were to get trapped in one of those it would be really scary. Like in my story Marcus is experiencing a monsoon. I also learned that there are two different types of monsoons. A dry and wet one. Dylan: I have learned all about tornados that i could imagine. I have learned about how they rate the tornados They put them in F categories. There are F1,F2,F3,F4, and F5. So in this magazine I hope you learn all about Extreme weathers! this magazine is important because it gives a lot of info about weather and if your were ever in a situation you would know how to get out.

INDIANA WEATHER Weather in Indiana is pretty crazy. But here we are lucky that we don’t receive storms such as monsoons or hurricanes. Blizzards and thunder storms are the most common. Temperature in Indiana averages at around 6o degrees F. In the summer its 90, in the fall its 50, in the winter its 20, and in the spring its 70.

We have a suburban climate and all 4 of the season occur here. Most of our weather comes from affects off of Lake Michigan. Thunderstorms occur when strong updrafts are balanced by downdrafts. Then it downpours! Lake effect snow happens in Northwest Indiana because the clouds can only reach that far. Cool air glides over warm air and that produces snow. !

Floods usually come from hurricanes after affect.

!

The maximum temperature recorded in Indiana was 116 degrees in 1936. The

Minimum was -36 degrees in 1994. And Indiana has had a total of 8 F5 tornadoes.

It was a warm Hurricane afternoon. the city was abandoned. A news chopper was circling up ahead as, a hugh Hawaiian cyclone started to maneuver in. It crashed across the hot sandy beach ripping chairs and tables every where. `1

[5]

Information As the wind hurled the news chopper men talked. Well what is the power of this hurricane well according to the saffir-scale its about a 3, thats pretty major. well the gulf is not the most come’n place to see a hurricane. that would be in the pacific or on the coast of the pacific. This hurricane is taking place on april 14 that right in between hurricane season, from june to november. these rippling winds are very deadly causing the most deaths from hurricane’s. because it could blow something over and that could fall on someone. those crashing wave’s are very destructive. they cause the most damage, property and town wise. because they just destroy every thing in its path. Do you know what the biggest and most deadly hurricane was i’m going to guess Katrina. well it was sandy it caused 50 billion dollars of damages. What is exactly is a hurricane and how do they form. it’s a violet wind storm that consist of water and rotates and they form if, the water is warm in that area and if the wind patterns are blowing clockwise. Did you know that there are at least 6 hurricanes every year.

MASSIVE MONSOONS

did you know that monsoons kill an average of 400 people

[7]

Winds were whipping wild and wiry. It felt of warm and cool air mixed on purpose by mother nature to send a message. The feeling of of tiny spikes flicking my cheeks. Fog started clearing the buildings in the distance. Tiny silver and blue droplets flew from the sky. Sirens were sounding in my ear. There was some sort of storm nearby, and that big bully had its path set and was 20 clicks off the coast in the Gulf. I walked inside my house and checked the news. There was a warning for a monsoon. Its a really nasty storm that consists of lots of rain, damage, lighting, and thunder. It was about 70 degrees outside but the humidity made it feel like 80. Clearwater, Florida was looking kind of grey in the sky and the water was a deep blue and the waves were crashing up on the shore about 20 feet away from my house. Many people have left Florida. Today is June 1, 2050, Im 40 years old and I’m retired from being a Navy SEAL, serving in SEALs team 6 not 5 years ago, but an injury from saving 3 teammates forced me to leave so that’s why I live in Clearwater. I love to chase storms. I don’t have a girlfriend and because every girl thinks I’m crazy. Friends forgot about me when I went off to be a SEAL. They would say things like “Marcus you’re crazy” or “Marcus you’re gonna get yourself killed.” I never listed to people and that’s why I won a Medal of Honor in Iraq. So I live trying to prove people wrong. This is the next step to becoming a legend and remembered when I die. And in order to accomplish that I have to go into the heart and soul of that monsoon and survive!

!

Monsoons usually occur most commonly from Arizona to Mexico in North America. People think the

spot hit is only affected but honestly the whole country is. Torn down and damaged power lines make it tough to communicate. Monsoons flood and destroy crops and supplies. That makes the economy go down. Then, the water cycle is fort of messed up but eventually fixes itself. Since there is so much water on the land, evaporation to clouds comes to a minimal. That’s why after monsoons there are huge droughts and its very dry. Wildfires destroy forests and cause farther damage to communities. Many tips during monsoons are to stay inside, stock on food and supplies, including having a radio handy. Electricity is post probably going to go out so extra batteries are recommended as well. Average rain in Florida is about 60inches a year. But a monsoon will raise that to about 40 inches just in the storm! Humidity should be up around 50% and the dew point at 55. June to early November water is warm and cold air forces warm air up because it is more dense. Wind changes direction rapidly and air pressure is low at the surface. That’s called a thermal low.

[8]

Now is my chance. Finally, the monsoon’s worst has reached the beach. Lightning and thunder was surrounding everywhere. The sky was violent and rain droplets pounded Earth’s surface like a rain of bullets. They stung! I was outside with nothing but a blanket and a camera. I was not prepared at all if I was to get hurt. No one knows I’m here and my only proof is the camera that I’m holding. I really have not thought this out. I need to survive. “Oh my god, oh my god , oh my god!” I prayed very quickly. Then it hit me! The storm hurt so much and I quickly buried myself in a blanket behind a cinderblock in the parking lot on the beach. Sand was flying around and stinging my skin and slipping into my eyes. My teeth were all gritty. I blocked everything out by barricading myself with 3 more parking blocks for a base and I stacked more on top of those kind of like a roof. Then, I covered myself with the blanket and set up the camera so that the lenses were barely outside. The storm was passing Clearwater very quickly. And what do you know, after 4 hours of being very hot. I heard no more wind. I climbed out and the place was a mess and the atmosphere was dead. That big bully was moving on.

[9]

Bewildering Blizzard

60 feet snow drifts of snow caused California/ nevada mountain to be closed for 3 months.

[10]

It was a freezing winter day in Rochester, New York. The blistering cold weather was tearing at my skin while the wind was howling at my ears. I then immediately ran inside feeling a wall of warmth hit me as soon as I walked in. “Grandpa!” I yelled, “It’s so cold out and I almost blew away, I could barley make it to our house because it was so snowy!” He said, “That is called a blizzard.” He went on to tell me what a blizzard is, he went off of the deadly 1972 Iran blizzard. “About 30 years ago a week long devastating blizzard tore through the country of Iran, taking 4,000 innocent citizens lives. Completely taking out both towns of Iran, Kakkan and Kumar, leaving no survivors.” “This blizzard was so deadly in Iran because of the cool, damp, breezy climate they have.” I was confused on how these raging winter storms occur, so I asked, his response was, “It happens when warm air

masses rise into cold dry air. It also needs below freezing air needed to make moisture to make clouds and precipitation form.” I then assumed that the blizzard in Iran was so deadly because there was extremely low visibility and because people outside died from hypothermia. My grandpa then asked, “Do you know why it gets so cold during a blizzard?” I asked why and he said, “Because of wind chill, wind chill is the rate of heat loss on the human body resulting from the combined effect of low temperature and wind.” I understood. I then questioned, “Well, are you then safe after a blizzard is gone?” He replied with, “Not necessarily, see after a blizzard, usually an ice storm rolls through, an ice storm is a winter storm with freezing rain that leaves a coating of ice.” “Usually from these storms the most common precipitation is, freezing rain, sleet, and snow.” I started to worry but then he reassured me that the worst blizzards happen in [11]

the great plains of the U.S. I then asked, “Do we have to worry about lake effect snow?” He said, “Sometimes it is part of a blizzard, but we do not have to worry about it that much, lake effect snow is when cool air masses glide across a lake with warmer water, producing snow.” Wow grandpa! All of these interesting facts are so cool but, how can i be safe during this deadly storm?” He responded with, “Well thats easy! If you are outside too long you can suffer from hypothermia, if you are outside, you can hurry into the nearest heated building or wrap up in blankets. If your at home with no electricity, light candles, make a fire. and wrap up! you can be prepared by starting making a fire, and warn friends and family.” Thanks grandpa, that was great!”

Supercell tornadoes form? thunderstorms can produce Most tornadoes form from violent tornadoes with winds thunderstorms. You need warm, moist air from the Gulf exceeding 200 mph.at are of Mexico and cool, dry air from Canada. When these two air masses meet, they create instability in the atmosphere. A change in wind direction and an increase in wind speed with increasing height creates an invisible, horizontal spinning effect in the lower atmosphere. Rising air within the updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical. An area of rotation, 2-6 miles wide, now extends through much of the storm. Most strong and violent tornadoes form within this area of strong rotation.`

some other factors for tornadoes to form?

Several conditions are required for the development of tornadoes and the thunderstorm clouds with which most tornadoes are associated. Abundant low level moisture is necessary to contribute to the development of a thunderstorm, and a "trigger" (perhaps a cold front or other low level zone of converging winds) is needed to lift the moist air aloft. Once the air begins to rise and becomes saturated, it will continue rising to great heights to produce a thunderstorm cloud, if the

[13]

atmosphere is unstable. An unstable atmosphere is one where the temperature decreases rapidly with height. Atmospheric instability can also occur when dry air overlays moist air near the earth's surface. Finally, tornadoes usually form in areas where winds at all levels of the atmosphere are not only strong, but also turn with height in a clockwise or veering direction.

This is what tornadoes look like?

Tornadoes can appear as a traditional funnel shape, or in a slender rope-like form. Some have a churning, smoky look to them, and other contain "multiple vortices", which are small, individual tornadoes rotating around a common center. Even others may be nearly invisible, with only swirling dust or debris at ground levels as the only indication of the tornado's presence.
