It’s that time of the year when many of us are celebrating the holidays with our family and friends. I had a great time with Team NRPS at the Great Santa Run a couple of weeks ago. We all had a great time spending time with each other though it was kind of hard to keep track of each other in the “Sea of Santa’s.” We have some great events planned for 2013. Many of you have inquired about the state conference. The date is set for September 17-20 in Incline Village. Pandora and her team are hard at work on the planning and recruiting
those that would like to join them. More information will be in the NRPS magazine coming out next month. CPRP Prep course will be held on January 25th at Sun Valley General Improvement District. It is a free event for NRPS members and following will be a social at Olive Garden. If you are interested in attending either the CPRP prep course or the social, please RSVP at secretary@nrps.org. We will be working on elections for new board members in the next couple of months. Please consider running for a position. If you have questions about what
each position entails, contact me or one of the board members for some insight. And don’t forget about renewing your membership for 2013. As I always say, don’t be just a member…be an active member of NRPS. Have a fun and safe holiday season. Here’s to 2013! Jayne

Aquatics Committee The NRPS Aquatic Committee is made up of aquatic professionals throughout the southern Nevada area. Members meet the 2nd Wednesday every other month to discuss aquatic trends, programming, staffing, operations and hot topics. In addition, the committee organizes several events throughout the year; Health & Safety Expo, Southern Nevada Lifeguard Games and a Recreational Swim Meet. Becoming and NRPA Board Member How to Become an NRPA Board Member NRPA is looking for both professional and citizen leaders who are passionate about parks, recreation, and environmental conservation. Have you ever thought about being a board member or know someone you think would excel as one? NRPA is looking for both professional and citizen leaders who are passionate about parks, recreation, and environmental conservation. Candidates should be active leaders who wish to further the mission of the association and have demonstrated talent and expertise in the field or in their community. NRPA values and seeks diverse leadership as defined by race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, appearance, and geographic location. We also encourage candidates from all types and sizes of park and recreation organizations. Naughty of Nice? The Naughty List of Holiday Foods 'Tis the season of temptation -- and the evidence suggests most of us give in. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows the average person puts on a pound during the holidays and never loses it. This adds up to serious weight gain over the years. For those with high cholesterol or high blood pressure, land mines abound on the dinner table. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid the holiday food trap. Naughty: Fancy Finger Foods Be careful at the office holiday party -- canapĂŠs and other fancy appetizers are often full of fat. Each one is tiny, but the calories add up quickly when there is an endless parade of hors d'oeuvres. Nice: Chilled shrimp, veggies, and fresh fruits are nutritious low-calorie appetizers Naughty: Caramel Popcorn Large tins of flavored popcorn have become a popular holiday gift. Although popcorn itself is a nutritious whole-grain snack, slathering on sugary caramel or other sweet syrups is a recipe for weight gain.
Nice: Stick to plain popcorn -- the crunch is just as satisfying without the extra calories Naughty: Egg Nog Alcohol, heavy cream, eggs, and sugar make a frightening combo -- a single cup of egg nog contains about 340 calories and 19 grams of fat.
Nice: Make low-calorie egg nog with skim milk, egg substitutes, and artificial sweeteners. Naughty: Mixed Drinks Cocktails can be surprisingly high in calories. One serving of a white Russian made with light cream has about 350 calories.
Nice: Mix up a wine spritzer by adding a splash of wine and sparkling water to pomegranate or cranberry juice. This not only shaves calories, but also contributes to your fruit servings for the day. Naughty: Cakes and Cookies Carbohydrate cravings may increase during fall and winter. You don't want to give in by reaching for too many sweets, but it's not good to ignore the cravings either. Carbs taste good and make you feel good triggering the release of serotonin, a brain chemical that boosts mood.
Nice: The solution is to control portions or snack on complex carbs, such as whole-grain cereal or crackers.

Grant Opportunities The Finish Line Foundation is offering grants to community-based athletic programs that address active lifestyle and team-building issues. Organizations committed to helping kids lead healthy, active lives or supporting kids with disabilities or disadvantages are eligible to apply for one of the Finish Line grants. http://www.finishline.com/youth-foundation-grants/youth-grant,default,pg.html Note: Grant requests may need to emphasize the mail order capacity of Nevada locations as the Finish Line physical stores are located in the Reno and Las Vegas/Henderson Areas. Finish Line Youth Foundation Special Grants FOUNDER'S GRANT (Emergency Funds Grants) $5,000 - $25,000 These grants would be awarded to qualifying organizations that have an emergency need that would somehow be keeping the organization from providing current services. Examples would be natural disasters or other unforeseen circumstances that require special funding to help build or develop facilities or equipment needs. LEGACY GRANT $10,000 - $75,000 The Legacy Grants will be awarded to qualifying organizations in need of improvements and/or renovations to existing buildings, grounds, and property or for new facilities and/ or grounds. How To Proceed: As with all other grant applicants, please start with the Online Eligibility Quiz. Once your organization is found to be eligible to receive FLYF funds, you will need to provide the following information: Abstract/Need Statement - An in-depth description of the project/funding need and stated objectives - specific statements of anticipated project outcomes, should be measurable, and directly related to project evaluation, budget and the project's sustainability. Also include a description of existing facilities so that comparison of final project to existing conditions can be made. Summary of Funds Raised - Description of fund raising efforts and amounts already pledged/received to date. NRPS Membership The Nevada Recreation and Parks Society (NRPS) is a non-profit, professional organization, founded in 1958. Its main purpose is to promote the growth and development of Nevada recreation and parks. NPRS is affiliated with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA). NPRS has several levels of membership to meet the needs of all parks and recreation professionals, students, retirees, agencies, and affiliates. PROFESSIONAL This category includes persons who are or have been employed full time in an executive, leadership or supportive staff capacity within a public or private agency or department of recreation or parks or educational institution. ($30) RETIRED PROFESSIONAL This category includes any persons over 45 years of age, who has been a Professional Member of NRPS, NRPA, or an NRPA Affiliate for a minimum of ten (10) years and has officially retired from a qualified professional position. ($15) ASSOCIATE This category includes persons who are employed part time or volunteers within the recreation and parks field, and who subscribe and agree to the aims and objectives of this society. ($15) STUDENT This category includes persons who are enrolled full time in high school, colleges or universities with an interest in parks and recreation or an allied field. ($10) AGENCY This category includes the Agency Director and members of the policy or advisory board or commission. Dues are based on full time employee (FTE) equivalent. ($250 – 20 FTE’s or more; $150 – under 20 FTE’s) ORGANIZATION/INSTITUTION AND AFFILIATE This category includes national, state, and local organizations, hospitals, colleges, universities, clubs, and local, state or regional societies and organizations. ($50) COMMERCIAL This category includes all vendors, commercial and for-profit organizations who subscribe and agree to the aims and objectives of this society. ($50) HONORARY May be bestowed upon those persons approved by this society’s Executive Board.
