DEAR FRIENDS,

T

he scripture that inspired Sister Mary Virginia Connelly, SSND, to build Notre Dame Preparatory School’s Hampton Lane campus was taken from the Book of Proverbs:

Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars…Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.

Proverbs 9: 1, 6

The stone pillars of our school’s façade represent the values of prudence, knowledge, discretion, counsel, judgment, strength, and understanding. And while everyone who enters our school sees the literal pillars, the figurative ones come alive in so many other ways… in the kindness shared among students, in the encouraging words and helpfulness given by caring teachers and staff, in the hours parent volunteers devote to activities, in the expertise Board members share in committees, in the difference alumnae are making in the world. In short, NDP’s pillars are its people, and the values we hold dear—academic excellence, spiritual depth, social justice—are lived out with compassion and kindness and through their time, commitment, and service to our school. The photograph to the left shows a few of our strong pillars and within these pages are the names and stories of many more! I am deeply grateful to all the individuals listed in this report for their demonstrated support of our 2018-2019 Annual Fund, which is essential to our school’s financial livelihood. I am also profoundly thankful to those donors listed within who have supported the early stages of our Limitless Campaign, a historic fundraising effort for NDP (details of this exciting effort are on page 16). My appreciation overflows for each person in our community who, in his or her own way, ensures the pillars of Notre Dame remain strong for today and tomorrow! Thank you for your past support and your future commitment to Notre Dame Preparatory School! May God bless you and your family, and may Notre Dame, Our Lady, continue to hold you in her heart!

NDP’s Italian Pilgrimage

ooking out over the sea of people, we feel the throb of anticipation.

Yes, it is hot. Yes, it is crowded. Yes, the views are not ideal. Still, we wait eagerly, excitedly. Then the cheering begins, off to the left from where we sit. Just like “doing the wave” at a baseball game, the spectators begin standing, cheering, and waving their arms as he goes by. Soon he rounds the corner and approaches where we sit. The shouting rings in our ears. We see him smile; we wave back and cheer. We know we are in the presence of someone extraordinary.

I’m reminded of the words of Atticus Finch from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” We do that through theater and it changes us…forever.

1. Pioneering spirit—NDP began with the pioneering spirit of the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), which was founded by a young German girl possessing a dream to teach and which grew into an international order dedicated to transforming the world through women’s education. Since NDP’s founding in 1873, the school has witnessed the trajectories of countless women pursuing education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Alumnae contributions in medicine, research, engineering, art, design, and more provide both inspiration and support for students today.

of an institution where spirit and people have been leading the way in STEAM education for nearly a century and a half. Gateway to Service

W

by Steve Pomplon, Director of Social Service

hen Lizzie Majchrzak, NDP’s assistant director of Social Service, walked through the Gateway after graduation in the spring of 2009, she may never

have thought she would one day be guiding future students through that very same threshold. The Gateway most often marks one’s point of arrival or departure from NDP, but for some alumnae this symbol transforms into something more akin to a revolving door of continual welcome. Lizzie’s path illustrates how the spirit, charism, and mission of NDP endures in the lives of our graduates. Mere weeks after graduation, Lizzie was back on campus as an intern for Camp Umoja. In the quiet morning hallways of summer, she perhaps glimpsed her future as she stood at copiers, organized desks, and prepared lessons for the five- to 11-year-old campers. That fall, Lizzie attended the University of Maryland and joined their “Beyond the Classroom” program, further enriching her passion for community engagement as she studied theories of social justice.

Camp Umoja buddies

As NDP’s WINternships grow to include non-profit career opportunities, Lizzie serves as an example to students who fall in love with a lifestyle of service. After college, Lizzie spent two years as an AmeriCorps Fellow at Reading Partners. Tasked with promoting literacy in the Baltimore area, she was reunited with some campers from the Umoja community by serving as the site coordinator at Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy. In her second year, she was the Senior Volunteer Coordinator for the region. After AmeriCorps she joined Teach for America, returning to Furman L. Templeton as an instructor. Lizzie returned through the Gateway in the fall of 2017. Assuming the afterschool, weekend, and summer programming of the Social Service Office, Lizzie’s primary impact on her community now comes via the NDP students. Still passionate about education, Lizzie now directs Camp Umoja—the first woman director in the program’s 35-year history. Be it in the classroom or during programming, Lizzie embodies the NDP mission, for she is a graduate who is dedicated to transforming the world. So as we begin a new year with the Gateway Ceremony, let us remember the power of our ever-growing community, and the enduring invitation back to our graduates and families in order to most effectively transform Making connections in Ecuador

Meet Joanne Jones NDP’s New Executive Director of Academics/Principal Reprinted with permission from the Baltimore Fishbowl Independent School Guide

J

oanne “Jo” Jones brings 30-plus years of teaching, administration, and leadership experience to her new job. The Michigan

native and University of Michigan graduate served as principal and director of development at Corpus Christi Catholic School in Holland, Michigan. There, she instituted a Spanish immersion program, integrated a STREAM curriculum, re-opened a tuition-free preschool, and led the school’s accreditation effort. In addition, she has served as a team mentor and presenter for the University of Notre Dame’s Latino Enrollment Institute. What drew you to education? My mother and aunts were educators. I admired their passion to better the lives of all students. I was taught from an early age that education was the great equalizer. Some students have great aptitude and a wealth of experience to draw on, other students learn through embracing every opportunity to learn in the classroom. What do you like about your current school? The community and the mission: “Where girls become women who transform the world.” Everyone who is a part of Notre Dame Preparatory (NDP) feels fortunate to be a part of the community and shares a commitment to personal and professional excellence. What do you hope to achieve in your role? As the executive director of academics/ principal, my primary goal is to support the academic life of our faculty and students. NDP has a long-standing tradition of excellence in education. I am committed to drawing on our strengths and ensuring that we keep our eye on our mission and strategic vision and continuously support the professional development of our faculty and staff. • annual report 2019 •

Through Limitless, we will increase our ability to welcome students whose families would otherwise be unable to afford an NDP education. “As a father of two graduates and the grandfather of a current student, I have witnessed firsthand the school’s commitment to its students and to its mission of academics, spirituality, and service,” says Scott Wilfong P’95, ’00, retired president and CEO, SunTrust Mid-Atlantic, and Limitless co-chair. “NDP must keep tuition competitive and scholarships available, and support of Limitless will help with both of these directives.” •

Breaking Ground with Spirit

B

efore the Innovation Wing took shape, the Notre Dame Preparatory School community did what it does best: gather together in prayer. At a ceremonial groundbreaking and blessing, which was part of our school’s Opening Liturgy in September 2018, volunteer leaders Jane Kroh Satterfield ’60, honorary chair, and Dr. Lilly Hunter ’90 and Mr. Scott Wilfong, co-chairs, along with many others, joined in a beautiful, spirit-filled blessing of the Innovation Wing. Dr. Hunter and Mr. Wilfong spoke to the impact the building and the programs it will house will have on future generations of students. Following, the entire NDP community prayed in thanksgiving for the school leadership, faculty and staff, trustees, parents, alumnae, friends, and students of Notre Dame Prep as soil from the construction site was blessed. Symbolically containing the community’s prayers and intentions, the blessed earth was then returned to the building site where it fortified the foundation of this new space. •

How Today’s Students Envision Our Innovation Wing

N

otre Dame Prep art students were asked to tap into their creativity and depict the new Innovation Wing. Whether in pen and ink, watercolor or paint, the girls each presented a unique vision of what the new space means to them and how it will impact the entire NDP community.

‘‘

I wanted to represent the Innovation Wing as an inspiring but safe space to create new ideas. I used watercolor combined with marker to bring out any bright colors I saw. Also, I emphasized the foliage around it, as nature is very calming for me. As a member of NDP’s Art Department, I am very excited for what the new wing will bring to my school!” Megan Gregory ’21 u

‘‘

To illustrate the new logical thinking skills and creativity the Innovation Wing will bring to NDP students, I decided to draw lines with pen to precisely convey shadows and highlights. This emphasizes the symmetrical and modern look of the building. Additionally, I juxtaposed the textures of the original stone walls and the wing’s shiny windows to show how old is meeting new with the addition of this building, just as science, mathematics, and technology all rely on old principles and new advancements in the world today.” t Julia Marine ’20

‘‘

I decided to paint the building using watercolor paint. I chose to do this because I felt as though the watercolor would capture the translucent/reflective surface of the windows, which are a statement of the building. I am beyond excited to be able to use this new space! I feel as though the new building will provide a great space for students to express their creativity in a variety of ways on the gallery walls, and in classrooms that will better tend to the needs of certain classes. I look forward to seeing how the final product turns out!” Allie McDavid ’20 u

‘‘

I chose to use bright colors in my painting to portray the bright future for all the girls who will be using this building. The new wing will bring opportunities beyond my imagination to so many students. I am excited to be able to spend a semester in the new building, but I am even more excited for all the girls in the coming years to use it. As a humanities and art student, the purpose of this wing is close to my heart, and I hope it is utilized by students and faculty to innovate and create!” t Tavi Steckel ’20

‘‘

I chose to represent the new wing in a vibrant style. I wanted to represent the newness and modernity that the building will bring to NDP, and I knew that the best way to do that would be with watercolor outlined with pen. This new building means a lot to students like me, since we will have a brand new creative space that will let our art and our minds flourish as young women who can transform the world.” Madelyn VanWestervelt ’20 u

2018-2019 WAS A BANNER YEAR for the Notre Dame Preparatory School community! Several local and national organizations honored NDP for its people and programs, including: • F or the eighth consecutive year, the Baltimore Sun named Notre Dame Prep a Top Workplace. In particular, NDP received a special recognition for “meaningfulness,” which was the second time in four years such an honor was bestowed. • T he Regional Manufacturing Institute of Maryland (RMI) selected NDP among its 2018 Champions of Manufacturing in the Emerging Leaders category. Notre Dame Prep was the only school, let alone the only girls school and only Catholic school, recognized by the RMI. • N DP’s Camp Umoja, a summer camp for Baltimore City youth, was honored at the 44th Annual Mayor’s Business Recognition Awards. This annual award recognizes those organizations that demonstrate significant leadership and service to improving the quality of life in Baltimore City. Since its founding in 1985, approximately 3,300 campers and 1,650 volunteer counselors have participated in Camp Umoja. • F or the third consecutive year, a Notre Dame Prep faculty member received the “Learn.Lead. Proclaim.” Award from the National Catholic Educational Association. Congratulations now retired English Teacher Mary Ann Reichelt! • N DP’s new Innovation Wing was included as a United States Green Building Council Award Honoree.

e extend our gratitude to the many individuals who helped with the recent upgrades to our chapel and auditorium. These wonderful spaces provide areas for students to enjoy special liturgies, retreats, and assemblies. Central to our school’s emphasis on faith and community,

the chapel received an HVAC upgrade and new carpeting, and funding for new lighting has been secured. The auditorium has been going through its own renaissance over the past two years. This year, the replacement of the auditorium seats completed the renovation. The NDP community came together to raise funds for this major upgrade. Proceeds raised by the Class of 2019 and their families, the NDP Gala, Student Council, Friends of the Arts, Parents’ Association, Fathers’ Follies, and various individuals helped make the renovation a reality over the summer months. The students enjoyed the welcome addition of cushioned seats during the Opening Liturgy.
