Paw Print “How the Bears make their mark”

VOLUME IX, ISSUE V June 2015

A group of captians from the 20142015 sports season, gather to celebrate Norwalk High School’s “Hour Cup” victory over Brien McMahon. Great job to all the teams this season, thank you for all your hard work and dedication!

Athletes May Have to “Pay to Play” Courtney Tapper Senior Editor Norwalk Public Schools is considering having athletes pay for school sports, starting September of 2015, as part of a plan to try and establish some equity between funding for both the sports and the music/arts departments in schools. The idea was originally proposed by former Superintendent Dr. Manuel Rivera. The funds would be used to pay for insurance coverage required for the athletes. The price would be one hundred dollars per athlete and the final decision is being made by the Norwalk Board of Education. “The desire to establish greater equity between sports and arts/music is a good one, but the issue is too complex to be dealt with through imposition of one fee,” commented Michael Lyons, chairperson of the Norwalk Board of Education, “the Board’s Policy Committee will be taking this entire issue up and will make recommendations for the 2016-2017 budget year.” James Connelly, current superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools, wants the student athlete fee proposal to be removed from the 2015-2016 budget. He believes the decision needs “a thoughtful, comprehensive review process that would start with the Board of Education Policy Committee, and that would include the opportunity for full participation by members of the public.” Some students have mixed opinions on the proposal. Students involved in arts and music programs generally favor the proposal since they are used to paying much larger fees for their participation in their programs. “Funds don’t magically appear. These programs have to be paid for,” said four year marching band member, Connor Fitton (’15), “if there isn’t enough money in the budget to cover all sports expenses, then athletes will have to pay if they want to play. This is

neither unreasonable nor unfair.” “I don’t think this proposal should be put into place because it is unfair and it is going to more repercussions than people will expect,” said varsity athlete, Ali Brown (’15), “Not all students are going to be able to throw out one hundred dollars for every sport they want to play, and if the school attempts to help them and give them money then there need to be more funding programs created to accommodate for the athletes.” The issue is very complex and needs be thought out carefully. Athletic director of Norwalk High, Mr. Marchetti believes that the proposal will ultimately have a negative effect on the athletic department as a whole. “I understand the budget process and how it is always not easy to put together,” Marchetti explained, “but, I feel any kind of participation fee would be detrimental because of aspects such as, the affordability factor, provision plans for those who cannot pay, and how this will account into play time.” Overall, this issue will ultimately be decided by the policy committee within the Norwalk Board of Education. Hopefully, the decision helps to create a balanced budget that benefits not only the athletics of Norwalk, but the financial needs to the city as a whole.

Student Spotlight: Emma Cooney Monica Mercuri

Samantha Ricci Reporter

Editor In Chief There are hundreds of kids at Norwalk High School that continue to make a difference everyday. Whether it is playing a sport, participating in student government, creating a club, or helping others within the community, these students deserve to be recognized by their teachers and peers. Every issue, there will be a new student featured in this column who has impacted NHS in extraordinary ways. The “Student Spotlight” for the June issue is Emma Cooney (’15). Emma Cooney, a senior at NHS, is very involved in many different activities ranging from a diverse amount of clubs and sports. She is the president of the B.R.O.W.N club, Secretary of the National Honors Society, former member

to playing in the pit orchestra and participating in student government. Emma has also been a part of the Best Buddies club and the Jewish Connection Club for three years. As the president of B.R.O.W.N, she considers this as one of her favorite things to be involved in. It is a club where students can attend service events throughout Norwalk, ranging from book giveaways to walkathons. One of its junior members, Ava Rosato (’16), believes Emma’s creativity and intelligence makes her stand out. Ava expanded, “Emma keeps our enthusiasm up and helps shape B.R.O.W.N as a fun and rewarding experience that all its members can take park of.” Emma has been a key component for three years and believes it is a “great way to give back and make an impact, no matter how small in your community.” She also is involved in Project Explorer, an independent study program here at NHS. For her project, she wrote and illustrated a children’s book. Student government has also been an organization she enjoys taking part in. Mr. O’Shaughnessy, Social Studies teacher and head of student government, said, “Emma Cooney is a really positive person and has a lot of energy. She is generous and gives a lot of time to all of the different things she does.” Emma believes it is important to get involved, “because the best way to make a change is to do it yourself. Cooney added, “I love to see my work feed into something greater than myself, something others can enjoy.” In the near future, Emma plans on attending Seattle University in the fall and is still undecided on her major. NHS wishes the best of luck to Emma and hopes for continuous success and laughter in the future.

New Schedule 2016-17’

Reporter

Special thanks to the student spotlight’s of 2014-2015: Nicole Chandler, Mariyann Soulemane, Harry Soriano and Emma Cooney!

Above is a proposed schedule, email nhspawprint@gmail.com your thoughts on the new block schedule.

Eidt Winner Kim Devine Isabella Bruni Reporter Each year the most outstanding Norwalk High School senior is awarded the life altering Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship. After years of hard work and dedication, the proud victor accepts her scholarship with poise and thanks; that person is Kim Devine (’15). “I was called by one of the Scholarship Selection Committee Members, the first recipient of the scholarship, Mr. Calnon, and he told me that I was the 2015 recipient”, she continued, “At first, I had absolutely no idea what to say because I was shocked. Then I caught my breath asked him if it was a joke, and he told me he was being completely serious. I came downstairs as I was on the phone and told my parents, they were equally as shocked and excited.” The Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship is a grand total of $100,000 given to a student in good standing, in the top ten percent of their class with achievements across the spectrum of academics, athletics, arts and community and religious services. The winner is determined by the scholarship selection committee based on a submitted application and personal interview process. Kevin Eidt was only a college freshman at Boston College when he unexpectedly passed from cardiac arrest in 1997, the year Kim was born. With the compassion of the Eidt family, Kevin’s extraordinary legacy lives on. Kim is the 19th NHS scholar to win this award and simply put is the ideal recipient. She has a GPA of 4.333 and takes multiple honors and AP courses. In school she is a member of the girls swim and outdoor track teams, the choir, Bears Beating Cancer club, SafeRides club and Link Crew. Kim is also an altar server, Confirmation Team leader, youth group member and 30-hour Famine Project participant at St. Phillips Church. Greatness must run in the Devine family because her older brother Kevin Devine also won the Eidt scholarship, but in 1999 when Kim was only 2 years old. In

the fall, Kim plans to attend College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA with an intention to study English or Psychology. Kim would like to thank the Eidts and the Scholarship Selection Committee for believing in her as a candidate. She would also like to thank her parents and siblings for not only their support but for being her role models. Kim said, “They were the true motivation for all of my high school success. Seeing how hard they work, I believe really shaped my character.” In her acceptance speech Kim put into words the greatness behind this scholarship, “From what I have learned about Kevin through the National Honor Society and Kevin’s Fund, this scholarship encourages the values Kevin exemplified during his lifetime: dedication to improving the community, service to others, commitment to his faith and activities, sincerity, and leadership. Kevin was not seeking personal recognition, glory, or accolades; it was just who he was and the way he lived his life. In the same way that Kevin lived these ideals, the Eidt family works incredibly hard to preserve Kevin’s legacy, and this Fund encourages others to follow the same path.” The entire Norwalk High community should be proud of Kim for all of her achievements and success here as well as beyond in her future.

Congratulations to the class of 2015!

The Board of Education has approved that Brien Mcmahon High School and Norwalk High School will transition to a block schedule in the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year. Many schools have been switching to a block schedule, which is four periods every day, each period being eighty-eight minutes long. The NHS Scheduling Committee Members include Mr. Couture, Mr. Daddona, Mrs. Ireland, Mr. Manka, and Mr. Singleton. “The process took months,” said Mr. Manka. “There was committee last year who set the stage for where the committee picked up this year. We visited schools, spoke to principals, teachers, and other staff members. I couldn’t put a value on my time. In my down time I would look for a new article online or gather more information.” “This schedule is good for any class as long as teachers utilize their time wisely,” said Mr. Smith. “You can’t just stand up and lecture the whole time. You have to chunk your class with different types of teaching strategies.” “I believe student attendance will improve,” said Prin cipal Roberts. “According to studies, students came to school more often, and attendance was affected in a positive way.” Teachers seem to be very positive and hopeful for the new schedule, but many students have a different opinion. “I don’t like the new schedule. I’m used to seven periods. I like the rotating schedule because it’s different every day, and I don’t want to be in one class for eighty-eight minutes,” said Aristotle Fotiadis (’17). Little do many students know, the schedule is for their

benefit. Eventually, the graduation requirements will be extended, and students will need an additional five credits to graduate. Because science labs are included in the period, less study halls will exist. “If an upperclassmen has study hall last period, they will be able to to take open end every other day, but the chances of a student having open end or beginning is more rare,” Principal Roberts informed. Students with internships will be able to leave the same time every day, and their jobs will not have to work around a rotating schedule. The impact of the schedule will be seen.

When Will S-Wing Get Cameras? Monica Mercuri Editor In Chief

ey (preparedness coordinator for Norwalk Public Schools) about this.” Roberts also added that students should “tell a teacher, an adult or police officer if something happens instead of not telling anyone.” While there are no camera’s currently in s-wing, it is important for students to be vigilant and put thought into where they park their car. If anyone notices strange or illegal action occurring, it is important to contact administration or the cop outside the school right away.

Car Vandalism at Norwalk High School was never an issue, until recent events. Students who park their cars on campus expect their property to be respected, but also trusts that NHS is providing security and camera’s in its parking lots in case something were to happen. While two parkings lots, the front and music wing, have camera’s installed, the s-wing parking lots do not. It is in these parking lots where two cars have been keyed this year, broken into, and last year, one stolen. Camera’s in s-wing would have been a key tool to locating these perpetrators, but with the absence, creates a strain on students and the administration. A student noticed that her car was keyed in the second level s-wing parking lot between activities after school. She explained, “I reported it and we are still trying to find out more about what happened. I was told there were no cameras in the science wing parking lots, only in the front parking lot.” The student continued, “Even though you think the school is safe, you don’t know what could

happen, that is why cameras are important.” During a separate incident last year, senior Jordan Arena’s (’15) car keys were stolen from her locker, and car was taken in the same s-wing parking lot. Without the camera’s in s-wing, it turned into a frustrating process. She explained, “at first the administration was concerned, the cop came and took down my information. Security was checking inside camera’s. They said there haven’t been working camera’s on the roof for years.” Arena eventually located her car by the help of friends looking for it, but these events could have been prevented or solved more efficiently with functioning camera’s throughout the school and in all parking lots. During the Senior Scholarship Awards on May 21st, A-House Guidance Counselor, Ms. Skenderis, daughter’s car was broken into. Her daughter parked in upper s-wing near the circle, and when she came out she noticed something was not right. Someone had broken into her car, stole her wallet and ate candies she had. There were no cameras in that area of the parking lot, therefore contributing to the frustration of what was supposed to be a beneficial and positive night. Principal Roberts has been been making requests for a year about the lack of camera’s. Roberts expanded, “There is a district safety plan that is going from school to school to see what they all need. I had a meeting with Bob Killack-

As the weather gets warmer and students start to become antsy for summer, an idea pops into the head of individuals, “wouldn’t it be cool if we had somewhere outside that one could sit out and enjoy the fresh air?” With courtyards scattered throughout NHS, students seem to wonder why have them if they are not allowed for student use. “I pass by the windows to the courtyards everyday and all I see is an awesome place to go to during lunch or my free time but not being able to do so. I honestly don’t even know why they have them at this point,” stated Michael Vallerie (’16). Senior class president Billy Passero seemed to have the same mindset regarding this topic. He explained, “The courtyards are a great resource that the school has and it’s a shame we haven’t been able to use them. With a little work and a few repairs the courtyards could be a place to get away from the stale school air for a study hall or lunch.” As covered on BCN previously, Principal Roberts stated during an interview that the courtyards will be opening this spring of 2015 and students are still

waiting for that statement to come true. Talking with Roberts to see his current opinion towards the matter at hand, he seemed to have only a few concerns. Roberts expanded, “It definitely is an idea up for discussion. If we were to do this it would most likely take place during lunch and would only be available to seniors. The only problem we seem to be running into with opening up the courtyards is lack of adult supervision.” With Project Explore being the driving force behind making anything possible, advisor Mr. Karl has been pushing for quite some time for someone to take on the project of finally opening up the courtyards. “When Mr. Seaburg and I first took over Project Explore, we were looking to suggest ideas. I always thought taking on renovating the courtyards to make it used for an outdoor lecture area or place to sit out would be a great project to take on, it just takes the right student to be passionate about it,” stated Mr. Karl. Making a difference in a school starts with a push and determination to make it happen.

Priyanka Thakkar Reporter There are always new teen drivers on the road and sometimes it is hard for them to follow all the rules. The police department knows that teens do not follow these laws for various reasons, “We are aware that many teens do not follow the law regarding the restrictions placed on teen drivers. Some of this is due to siblings being driven to school, as parents may not wish to then, also drive a sibling to the same school when an older child is already driving,” stated Norwalk Police Department Chief, Thomas Kulhawik. Sometimes it is hard to say no to a peer who is in desperate need for a ride. Many teens end up giving friends a ride due to this circumstance. “If my friend is stranded and there is no one to pick him up, I’ll pick him up,” said Ryan Bennett (’16) whose had his license for eight months. These laws are put in for the safety of others and it is imperative that students be aware of them. “Like most traffic laws, they are put into place to create a safer environment for the operators and passengers and education and voluntary compliance are key to their success,” stated Chief Kulhawik “In a way it’s a bit unfair, but in reality it is for our safety,” stated Zack Lajoie (’15), whose had his license for two years. Students may feel as if the laws are unfair, “if you have your license you should be able to enjoy full benefits of it and not be restricted,” stated Bennett. Teen drivers tend to be distracted very quickly, which is why teens under eighteen have to wait one year to drive others.

In an article titled “Teen Drivers Get Distracted Far More Easily Than Any Parent Dares to Think” by Time magazine, stated that in 2013, 963,000 teenagers crashed a vehicle, in which 2,865 died and 383,000 were injured. This is a very significant amount. “To drive friends right away, can cause problems for new drivers. They could be easily distracted,” stated Lajoie. Even if teen drivers do not follow the driving rules it is difficult for an officer to know if the

driver is underage, “Generally however, it is difficult for an officer to determine age and driving experience when observing a vehicle passing,” stated Chief Kulhawik. The only way an officer may notice if a teen is breaking the law is if they are in a accident. “Most often, any violations are noted as a result of another issue such as an accident or vehicle stop for a moving violation,” continued Chief Kulhawik. These laws are put in for a reason, and though it may be intimidating they should always try to be enforced. “Parents, guardians, friends and others need to be cognizant of the laws and not encourage their teen drivers to obey the laws for their own safety,” ended Chief Kulhawik. ‘Pho’nominal Food in Fairfield Lilliana Garcia Reporter

Slurps Up! Fairfield County now is a little more diverse in their food culture with Mecha Noodle Bar. This restaurant is an American-Vietnamese-JapaneseThai-Chinese-Korean-New England- Momofuku- Tottoand- Ippudo-inspired food. Although ramen noodles are typically known as a “college staple” of salty, dry pasta usually served in water, Mecha Noodle Bar changes the outlook and sticks to the traditional Asian style Ramen, not the Americanized version. While inside Mecha Noodle Bar one can get a variety of Asian inspired food. From Vietnamese Pho to Japanese Ramen, they as serve some of Asia’s best comfort foods. In the restaurant, there are two by four wooden planks hanging from the ceiling, which is used to represent pasta. Mecha Noodle Bar is not the average “Ma and Pop” restaurant it has a very modern twist, but still feels homey on the inside. The menu is focused on noodles of all kind, but Mecha Noodle Bar still serves other types of food. This includes a delicious Saigon Egg Roll, which is mouthwatering ground pork, lettuce and nuoc mam (dipping sauce). The noodles that they serve there are delectable. The

ramen is always served with an exquisite broth, that could be served by itself, but when the noodles are added it only amplifies the taste and meal. Each dish has its very own unique flavor. Whether it be the Tonkotsu which features pork ramen, cahsu, spicy sprouts, egg and scallion, or Mazeman which is brothless curry noodles, spare ribs, spicy pickles and egg; every ramen comes with an assortment of toppings. This assortment ranges from egg to mushroom, bamboo shoots, to roasted pork, which means personalizing each bowl specifically to the customer. Pho(a Vietnamese noodle soup) also begins with fragrant broths and rice noodles. Personalize the Pho with options such as chicken, grilled flank steak, rare beef and cilantro, or shrimp, fish cake, and calamari. The fish cake is absolutely to die for, and is definitely not a fish cake in the

usual sense. Mecha Noodle Bar is located in Fairfield on 1215 Post Road and is worth the fifteen minute drive to eat some of the best Asian comfort food in Fairfield.County.

Imagine being able to meet every person in New York City. It was impossible, until now. Social media now paints a new story and brings life to the individuals of the Humans of New York. Humans of New York is a project Brandon Stanton took on the day he quit his job and decided he wanted to do something else with his life. This project began in Chicago, and eventually met its ideal target in New York City. The idea is insane, but in the hands of Stanton, the Humans of New York has been given life, and a source through which they can share their stories in. A memorable time for Humans of New York and Brandon Stanton was the day he interviewed a young boy who attended Mott Hall Bridges Academy, and when asked who his biggest role model was, he said his school principal, Ms. Lopez. “One time she made every students stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter.” Brandon Stanton was so surprised that he went to the school and met Ms. Lopez. She then explained how hard she tries to get through to each kid that they matter. Humans of New York then partnered up with Mott Hall Bridges Academy and together created a fundraiser to create opportunities to kids to visit universities such as

Harvard. In less than five days, $1,042,820 were raised to support this cause. Ms. Lopez and the young boy who were interviewed in the streets then went on to appear on Ellen and even met President Barack Obama. Together, Ms. Lopez and Humans of New York created a fund worth 1.4 million dollars use that money to fund class trips, summer programs, and scholarships for the inner school city. It is near impossible to meet every person in the world, and even the state of New York, but Humans of New York brings us a step closer to getting to know the humans of New York on a more personal level.

Diversity in High School Fashion Elise Sullivan Reporter

t: Elise Sullivan o Credi P h ot

When people talk about diversity at Norwalk High School, they are not usually referring to fashion. However, teens have so many rules to follow that fashion is one way they can express their individuality and personality. There are many different fashion styles that can be seen around school; preppy, bohemian, athletic, chic, and casual. Paisley, stripes, yellow, florals and fringe are just a few of the many fashion trends teens will be seeing in their favorite stores, on celebrities, and in social media. NHS students have their own style for this spring and summer as the weather heats up. NHS student, Gabi Catino (’18), said, “I’m probably going to be buying a lot of cute floral tank tops, with light and stylish cardigans, and high waisted shorts or jeans for the warmer weather. My favorite stores to shop at are Forever21 and Charlotte Russe.” Gabi says that her fashion inspiration comes from tumblr and Pinterest. NHS junior, Juliet Bonsangue (’16), stated, “I’m looking forward to wearing patterned shirts and paisley this spring and summer. My favorite stores to shop at are J. Crew, Forever 21, and Banana Republic.” Elizabeth Denton, web editor for Seventeen Magazine, according to Seventeen.com, reported that nautical dresses, floral circle skirts, embroidered shorts, neon statement necklaces, gladiator sandals, and daisy prints will also be very trendy this spring and summer. Jazmine Manning (’18), a NHS freshman, expanded, “My style is based on how I feel that day. For example, if I want to be lazy I’ll wear a sweater with moccasins. Some of my favorite stores are American Eagle and Forever 21, but you have to spend 21

hours in there to find a perfect outfit. I’m looking forward to warmer weather and putting together cute outfits. I started to drift towards the flower crown look last year and think it looks very cute with spring colors.” Girls are not the only ones who express themselves through how they dress and are looking forward to the warmer weather clothing, boys do as well. Connor D’Amico (’16), NHS junior, for example, talked about his style and what he plans to buy this spring and summer. “I would consider my style preppy or classic nautical,” he explained. “My favorite stores are Polo Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, Sperry and J. Crew. I recently bought some new button downs from J. Crew, and I went to Polo Ralph Lauren and Vineyard Vines and got some new clothes for the spring and summer. I got some of the things in yellow, light blue, n a v y, brown and salmon pink.” NHS students express themselves in so many ways, especially through they way they dress. Juliet concluded, “I think that people who are more confident in themselves tend to dress in brighter colors and patterns.” The hallways at Norwalk High are like fashion runways, showing a diverse selection of styles.

It is a tragic one but this aspect should not discourage you to see it. It is a beautiful masterpiece and it deserves so much more recognition.

Driving in the car and forgetting to turn on Pandora, ultimately leads to turning on the overplayed songs on the radio, where one can always expect to hear the same ten songs. Either an occasional auto tuned Rihanna song, or a rap song ruined by techno beats to appeal to radio listeners, it all starts to sound the same when played a couple hundred times a day. Nowadays with technology being so advanced, one is able to listen to music in many different ways including apps like Pandora radio, spotify and downloaded music streaming straight from our iPhones and into the car speakers. Now imagine a world where iPhones did not exist, and music was not easy accessible. The result would only be to resort

Tomm Moore did it again! He had created another masterpiece. “Song of the Sea” is about a young boy, Ben, discovering the world his mother had told him through stories. He embarks on a journey back to his home to reunite with his companion, Cu, with his four-year-old sister under his control. Yet, unexpectedly, he discovers his purpose

It was simply a motivation to see through his mute sister, Saoirse. He slowly but surely realizes that the stories his mother had told him were real and that he has to help Saoirse save it from eternal doom and unhappiness. It was a dragging start however, the beautiful animation kept it entertaining. A good example would be Saoirse making her way to her Selkie coat. It was an eager anticipation for her to discover where

There was a chest with symbols on it. The symbols were left unexplained throughout the movie but it looked beautiful when it lit up. Plus, the coat was softlooking and angel like. It was glowing in a very enchanted way. The color scheme was on point. It was carefully chosen. The insides of the room, where the selkie coat was hidden, had red and purple. There is so much one could do with the radio, but yet the stations decide to air the same songs over and over again. This is due to money and ownership by Clear Channel in over 1225 radio stations. With their ownership, producers pay the stations to play their song multiple times a day. Many might like the songs, but by the end of the day it will soon be hated by more, ruining the music industry in its entirety. Whether it is a matter of lack of music being produced causing overplaying songs or

Marvel Avenger’s Legacy Remains Kathia Puccinelli Reporter Marvel Cinematic Universe has impressed the people of Earth once again. The worlds favorite super heroes are back saving Earth like its part of their everyday schedule. In its first three days of being in theatres, the superhero sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron, grossed a highly impressive $191.3 million, which was good enough to be the second-highest opening weekend of all time. Although the first Avengers still holds the record for best opening weekend ever at $207.4 million, the movies grossed a lot of money but the action and story are well deserving. When it comes to Marvel they have the ability to sweep one of their feet at the magic that is playing on the big screen. The battles in this movie is the edgeof-your-seat and nail-biting kind of battles. The action features all the amazing one of a kind skills one's favorite superheros con-

tain. There are strong female characters like Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Agent Hill that take control and show the men how to save the world correctly.

These strong female characters show that the male superheroes would not be where they are without these women. Iron Man’s signature sarcastic humor lightens the mood in the whole movie. It

makes robots almost taking over the world like it's no big deal and non threatening at all. While all the chaos of Ultron trying to take over the world and attempting to make the Avengers extinct, Marvel had the time to put in a love story. Peoples favorite tempered mad scientist Bruce Banner a.k.a Hulk, finds an unexpected love interest with one of his fellow Avengers. When you put a billionaire philanthropist, a scientific genius with a temper, a legendary American soldier, a trained assassin, a God from another dimension, and an archer with skills like no other in the same movie again, dreams come true. Plus the Avengers get two new allies in this movie that make The Avengers even more unstoppable. Though this has been out for months, it is a movie that one buys and has forever because the excitement that Avengers: Age of Ultron has in every scene probably will not ever get old.

Rapper President NYCFC Begins Kevon Cowan Reporter

Aylin Aristizabal Reporter March 15, 2015 marks a day New York City will never forget. The news of a new Football Club in New York City was announced mid 2013. Through many ups and downs, the director of the NYC Football Club was able to finally debut his team in the Yankee Stadium, which is set to be the team’s home field for the next three years. This was arranged by New York City’s parent club, Manchester City and the New York Yankees, who own thirty percent of the club’s shares. The historic home opener for New York City Football Club at Yankee Stadium came with a victory of 2-0 against New England Revolution in front of 53,507 people.

Cross town city rivals, the New York Red Bulls, were eager to prove the people of New York that this city already had a home club. In the eighteenth minute of the NYCFC v. New England Revolution, the official twitter account of the New York Red Bulls, tweeted out a link titled “Who are the best 20 players in 20 years of metro soccer?” The following minute David Villa, a former Barcelona FC player, and first player of New York City FC, scored the first goal in the game, and would later assist Patrick Mullins sealing the win for the club. In the eyes of 53,507 fans, NYCFC shined as bright as the lights in the stadium. From Spain, to Norway, Japan and Colombia, the immense diversity and skill of the players showcase this team as a rising club with the potential to reach great heights. Rapper Waka Flocka says he will be running for President in the year of 2016. He started his campaign and has been getting a lot of support, even though he is seven years younger than the age requirement. He announced this “candidacy” on April 20th. Waka Flocka has no chance of winning being 28 years of age, but he is still inspired to publicize himself and his platform. Waka Flocka’s campaign is most certaintly a joke, but he is gaining national attention in the media and from his fanbase. Waka Flocka has shown a surprisingly amount of support for projects that can better the world and the social enterprise. He is showing a great interest in solar energy and other things that can improve everyday lives. He has stated that if he was to be elected president, he would ban dogs from entering restaurants and legalize the use of marijuana. This has been a controversial issue whether the use of marijuana should be decriminalized and made legal. It has been

made legal in two states as an experiment, but Waka Flocka would aim to make it legal in all states. Flocka believes the executive branch should have extreme power. He stated on his Instagram account that if he is the president, then he should be the Congress as well which is unconstitutional which shows his ignorance of the American Government system. Waka Flocka says he is doing this for the millions of followers who are teenagers and the future change makers of the next generation. These followers are called the agents of flight. The agents of flight are Waka Flocka’s devoted supporters/followers who are aiding him in helping make changes to their community that can later benefit the world. He has turned down requests to elaborate on his views on foreign policy. Waka Flocka has also stated on his Instagram profile that if he is elected president, he will require schools to teach more “reality skills.” Waka Flocka has shown a lot of promise in his political views, but it is unfortunate he has to be thirty five years old to run for the Presidency.

When I walked into the journalism room my first day of sophomore year, I could not have possibly predicted the amazing journey the last two years have taken me on. As I am writing my first editorial, one of many that I will write as my last year of high school approaches, it is a bittersweet beginning to an end. Let me start by saying that the reason why I took this class was not an attempt to put any random class in my schedule, but because I wanted to find a beneficial way to interact with the community. Coming from a different high school, I had no prior knowledge of The Paw Print had or the legacy it left behind. Upon joining, I immediately felt a connection to the class and my peers when I walked in. I looked up to the editors and admired their critique on my articles, even when they were covered with red pen. It taught me patience, and that making mistakes was okay. Not only did I gain self-confidence by going out and conducting interviews, but I established relationships with NHS teachers and staff that I could now trust and ask anything of if I needed it. While some may ask why I continue

to take this class and the role as Editor-In-Chief next year, it is merely because it is something that I genuinely enjoy doing. I have found a way to use my love for writing to help others. If I could make a difference within the community by bringing awareness to important issues, good or bad, I know I have made an impact somehow. For example, bringing attention to the lack of camera’s in s-wing or acknowledging positive students in Student Spotlight. There is nothing more satisfying than hearing my classmates and teachers discuss articles in the paper, and seeing improvements being made as a result. Sadly, I will be saying farewell to the senior editors as they graduate this spring. It is from them that I have learned so much from, whether it be designing a page, writing an article, or everyday problems I needed assistance with. We have created a tightknit family dedicated to bettering the halls of NHS. Although they will be moving on beyond NHS, I feel prepared to transition into next year with the knowledge they have left me. I am up for the challenge to teach new students how the paper works, and continue the impact The Paw Print has on the community. I am ready to be editor-in-chief.

When The Bad Outweighs The Good Editor In Chief

I am sick of seeing racism every night on my television. I am sick of seeing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community being denied access to public places because of who they love and the way they chose to live their lives. I am sick of seeing the effect that terrorists groups have, and the fear they attempt to cause by threatening the United States everyday and our allies. I am sick of seeing children starving in Africa or in other impoverished countries, while I have a hot plate of food waiting for me every night for dinner. I am sick of seeing school shootings, bombings, and tragedies that rip the country apart before binding it back together again.

I am healed by seeing individuals who chose to accept others no matter their religion, gender or sexuality. I am healed by acknowledging individuals that risk their lives for our country and defeating those who try to induce harm on others. Senior year is coming to an end and for many seniors that means it is time to not care anymore. High school is becoming just another memory and soon we will all have to face the harsh reality of the future. Ever since I was a little kid I yearned for this day, a day where I am finally

independent.

Now

that

I

am here, it is hard to tell if I am making the right decisions or if I am truly ready to step into this world of adulthood. As any other teenager, there was one point in my life that I thought that all adults were wrong, and I was right. I never stopped to realize that they all were once teenagers too. They all have gone through what we are going through now: a stage of confusion and fear. Many teenagers today have invested most of their time looking for parties to go to each weekend so that they can get “wasted.” However, the only thing that is getting wasted is the time lost to rise above everyone else. The priorities of the average teenager have

flipped

from

focusing

on

the

fu-

ture of adulthood, to revelling in youth as if it will never end. It is easy for us to rebel against the authority and to not care, because we are all “young, wild and free.” This stage will only last so long, and this is what many teenagers have failed to realize. The time to start on the right path is now. The longer it is pushed off is just another day wasted on laziness. This abuse towards the mind and body is getting people off track on the things in which really do matter. It is easy to fail in life. Now that it is the last quarter of the senior year, it makes it easy to just not care anymore. To give up on all the hard work that was put into our high school careers. If people continue to not care or listen it is going to be easy to fail. Failing in life is inevitable, but it is how a person handles those failures that shows growth. Part of growing up and reaching maturity is knowing how to handle what life throws at a person. Sitting around and blaming “senioritis” for the troubles, will

not

benefit

anyone.

“Senioritis”

Vegetarianism: A Choice & Lifestyle Priyanka Thakkar Reporter Being vegetarian is not something I have “become” but it’s something that has been passed down to me. It is a sin to eat meat in my religion. Though, some Hindu’s do eat meat. It all depends on the person and the customs the family follows. Personally, we have never had meat in our house, never even cooked meat. On Thanksgiving we have a vegetarian meal, which truly I would not be able to describe because you would not believe me. People ask me all the time how I can be a vegetarian and truly it is not that hard. I get asked almost everyday what I eat. One will be surprised to find out that there are a lot of meals out there for vegetarians where they can easily replace an ingredient with another. For example, if you would like to eat tacos, many would think vegetarians would not be able to because they are typically made with beef, but all you have to do is replace the meat with

beans. Also questions always come up. For instance, How can you live without tasting meat? and comments such as You’re missing out. But honestly, I do not even think about that. When you have never eaten meat in your life, you do not know what it tastes like, therefore not missing it. So, I am never taunted to eat meat. It is just something I have lived without my whole life. So have I ever accidentally eaten meat? Yes I have. I came across beef in an empanada once and was sick for a week straight. See, vegetarians who have been this way their entire life, cannot sustain meat in their body. Their organs are not used to eating such foods, which is why many people typically get sick if they eat meat for the first time. There are advantages of being vegetarian. If you tell your server at a restaurant you are one, and they give you meat by accident. Boom. Your meal is free. Being vegetarian is not only a lifestyle but something I am proud of everyday of my life. Eating animals is not something that should be pleasurable. When one actually thinks about what they are eating, they will be surprised to

know what is actually in their food. If you would like to be vegetarian, I say do it. You will find out that it actually is not that hard. Once you do your body and mind will feel better.

Beach days are the worst. As a person who dislikes flip flops, it is always a goto decision to not wear them when necessary no matter how hot it may be. On the beach, it would be stupid of someone to wear closed shoes because it is a beach, for goodness sake. It is normal for people to wear it on this kind of place and so, cue the stares whenever someone walks on sand with Nikes on. Therefore, a genius or some wizard should make a flip flop feel like sneakers to make people like me less anxious about wearing them.

Jordan Arena A&E Editor Driving has perks especially when it allows people to get from one place to another. The only disadvantage one has ever found is the infamous parking shortage, especially when having to deal with the parking lot at Norwalk High. It is 7:15am and the parking question of whether there will be a spot where a student normally parks starts to pop up into the heads of anxious and overly tired high school students. Instead of focusing on the road, visions of parking in the lowest lot of S-wing and having to walk numerous amounts of steps in the freezing cold start to arise. As one enters the school there is a single open spot on the top level remaining. The person entering right before you spies it too

and it is a race to the finish line at that point. Taking the drive of shame to the lower level once you realize it is too late, an idea pops into one’s head; assigned parking spots. Instead of having to race to school every morning to get a decent parking space, it would be much easier if students automatically knew where they were going to park. This would save tons of stress and time in the morning and the problem of not knowing where to park would stop being an issue. It would limit the aggravation of students taking up teacher spots, juniors taking up senior spots and parents taking up everyone’s spot. If there were assigned parking spots it would decrease tardies in the morning and overall traffic jams, considering there will not be people aimlessly searching for a spot that is not in fact there. Think about it, this would be beneficial to everyone.

Flip flops are disgusting. On one summer day, Nicole chose to wear sandals since it suited her outfit. It was hot, super hot. Plus, she believed she had nice toes despite the inevitable genetics of not-so nice feet. She went out, all happy and ready to go outside, then came her enemy, the insecurity trigger. The trigger reminded her how her toes were so ugly. She went back into her room to change it but was stopped by her older sister. Their family had to leave at that very moment. The young girl was now then stuck with her toes exposed. Let’s just say, she did not enjoy her trip to go outside. It ripped her self esteem apart, just because of a stupid shoe, that shoe that could hurt someone too. If one steps on the back, it could trip that person and scrape some skin off or have the person fall down the stairs and go into a coma. Yikes.

Last year, around near the end of spring, she wore flip flops. It seemed fine while walking on the streets of New York and she was comfortable. Yet, when she came home, she had the silhouette of the straps from her flip flops. It was horrible. It took her awhile to scrub it off. The water even turned black when she tried to scrub it away. It was hilarious, but sickening.

Lilliana Garcia Reporter Happy eighteenth birthday, now try not to get arrested. When a person turns eighteen, legally they are considered “adults” in the eyes of the government, and law. Eighteen year olds are legally allowed to do anything their heart desires (with limitations of course). When being eighteen there are a multitude of fun activities including; getting a tattoo, exploring nightlife, go skydiving, bungee jumping, get a piercing, and gamble and why would someone who just turned eighteen be unable to do “crazy” things when “legal.” As long as someone is not doing anything illegal no one can really do anything about it. Now, do not go out and crash a car or get arrested. Try to take part of being an adult and celebrate the moment. Life is too short to worry about what to do next, just take the moment and go with it. From most parents perspectives smoking, getting a tattoo and gambling all the money in the college fund may not be a good idea, and irresponsible. However, they are not

Young, Wild & Eighteen technically “against the law”, knowing the risks one must be able to face the consequences. Eighteen year olds are still young mentally.Mistakes are good, they are lessons, failing momentarily is normal, and everyone does it. The biggest mistake a person can do is nothing because of the fear of failure. Just remember if living with parents, they truly get the last say of everything, one must abide by rules and if denied the ability to do something, just listen. Stay safe, and smart about what to do once turning eighteen, and then go ahead go crazy, get a little wild, be adventurous. Life is short, yet amazing. Enjoy the ride.

What is Success? A Lack of Spirit Monica Mercuri Editor in Chief

The true meaning of success is interpreted in many different ways. For some, success includes a house resembling a mansion, with a nice car like an AudiR8 or a Range Rover to match. A highpaying job, for instance a well respected lawyer, investment banker, CEO or a celebrity even. The ability to travel on the weekends, in a high-end private jet that has your last named carved into the wings in gold, like Donald Trump. While this may be exactly what one thinks of when they see the word “success,” this concept varies between individuals. Unfortunately, this stereotype is what people usually consider, and the misconception that the way to achieve this is to have access to extravagant material things that reveal a person’s superiority to society. What might look like success on the outside, may not be the same case on the inside. For example, the Johnsons family live in a big mansion with a swimming pool. All their neighbors with much smaller houses perceive them as successful individuals. While in the meantime, they could be struggling internally and are

not as content with their lives. Another family living in a smaller house, may be comfortable with the way they are living and are happy. That is triumph as well. This generation, and the one’s previous, have grown to believe that materialistic things are connected to the true meaning of success. But the reality is, people are going to move onto a new and better car within the next month. They are going to crave

releas- es every year. This is when new becomes outdated rather quickly. As soon as these become in reach, it is suddenly not prosperous anymore. Success does not have to mean any of these things. Success is about achieving the best that you can be, and working hard to reach the utmost of your potential. Success is the feeling one gets when they put effort into something, and see it pay off. Anyone can be successful if they work hard. Let us make success mean something more than material things that can be replaced.

Mandate Sex Ed Isabella Bruni Reporter

Due to the increase of sexually transmitted diseases in certain states’ high schools, the debate of sexual education is at its peak. In early May a small west Texas high school had a large outbreak of chlamydia, a common STD that can be treated with antibiotics; but if not treated can result in serious reproductive and other health problems with both short-term and longterm consequences. Many criticize the state of Texas for not teaching sex and HIV education in health classes while others blame the students for not practicing abstinence. Either way, even in very religious states like Texas, sex and HIV education should be taught in schools. There is a correlation between the states who do not teach these subjects and STD rates such as Alaska with nine hundred forty six per one hundred thousand, Louisiana with eight hundred twenty two per one hundred thousand and Arkansas with six hundred thirty five per one hundred thousand. Pushing for abstinence clearly is not solving the issue, so teaching kids how to safely practice sex and expose them to the dangers of it should be a no brainer. It is not fair to the kids growing up in this sexually exposed 21st century that are uneducated and have questions about sex that are not answered. Their lack of knowledge will later have them deal with harsh effects due to a school system’s failure to educate their students on real life topics. It is a proven fact that kids are becoming sexually active at younger ages with sixty six percent of high school students admitting to have had sex by senior year.

These same people are the ones contracting dangerous, or even deadly, STD’s as well as becoming pregnant. Thirty four percent of teenage girls have at least one pregnancy before the age of twenty. Today only twenty two states have sex education mandated and thirty three have HIV education mandated. There are fifty states, all with pre-teens, teens, and young adults who have a right to be formally taught the repercussions of unsafe sex. The state of Connecticut currently is only mandated to teach HIV education, not sex education. However, at NHS both are taught, giving students a wide range of health topics. This school is fortunate enough to have a health center where students can go to be STD tested and receive protection. It is places like the health center that help Connecticut stay away from high STD and teen pregnancy rates. Hopefully after the eye opening truth from the chlamydia stricken Texas high school, more will be willing to educate America’s youth on this extremely necessary subject matter.
