Master of Arts in Theological Studies ON-SITE OR ONLINE FORMAT

As both an academic and professional degree, the Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) provides biblical and theological training to equip you for effective ministry in the church, workplace, parachurch organizations or academic settings.

Concentrations BIBLE EXPOSITION The Bible exposition concentration is for individuals who desire to study the Word of God at a deeper level, presenting an expository study of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. BIBLICAL STUDIES The biblical studies concentration is designed for students who plan to use the biblical languages (Hebrew and Greek) in their ministries. THEOLOGY The theology concentration includes study of systematic theology, apologetics and ethics. If you’re considering further study toward your M.Div. or at the doctorate level, the theology concentration provides an excellent foundation.

Course of Study The Master of Arts in Theological Studies is granted upon completion of 36 credits. Coursework can be completed in approximately 18–22 months. COURSE HIGHLIGHTS MATS students complete 12 courses, which vary depending on your selected concentration. OUTCOMES Through the MATS program, you will: • Develop biblical principles for spiritual formation and discipleship • Learn advanced principles of biblical interpretation • Study the socio-historical worlds that gave rise to the Old and New Testaments • Survey the history of Christianity • Construct a personal theology of leadership IS THE MATS FOR YOU? The MATS will increase your biblical knowledge and help you bring a Christian worldview to your profession. The degree provides a foundation for educational advancement and professional development for lay ministers, vocational ministers and teachers.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN CHRISTIAN STUDIES Northwestern offers a Graduate Certificate in Christian Studies that includes the five core courses of the MATS degree. You’ll expand core theological knowledge and gain skills to equip you for ministry. The certificate can be completed in approximately eight months, and course credit will fully transfer toward completion of the MATS or M.Div.
