Bolles to Soy Returns for 2010
Northwest Missouri State begins the 2010 season as the defending national champion and as the top-ranked team in the nation. The Bearcats host the 16thranked Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville tonight in the season opener for both teams. The Javelinas finished 9-3 last season, tied for the South Division Title of the Lone Star Conference at 4-2 and were eliminated by Tarleton State, 57-56, in double overtime in the first round of last year’s NCAA playoffs.
Northwest and Texas A&M-Kingsville have met twice previously, both times in NCAA playoff games in Maryville. Bearcat quarterback Chris Greisen threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns including three to Tony Miles in a 49-34 national semifinal win in 1998. Northwest topped CarsonNewman, 24-6, the following week to capture the program’s first national title. Northwest’s Josh Matthews threw three touchdown passes and Jamaica Rector had 11 receptions for 202 yards and a score in a 34-14 second-round contest
Northwest returns arguably the nation’s top quarterback-wide out combination in senior signal caller Blake Bolles and junior receiver Jake Soy. Bolles set MIAA singleseason records for passing yards (4,145) and passing touchdowns (42) last season while Soy set MIAA records for receiving yards (1,559) and touchdown receptions (27). Soy was named National Receiver of the Year and became the second player in Division II history to catch 27 touchdown passes in a season. Running Game Returns for Javelinas The Javelinas have a wealth of talent at the running back position. Senior Fred Winborn led the LSC in rushing and scoring last season with 1,295 yards in 12 games (seven starts) and 19 touchdowns (17 rush, 2 rec). Spelling Winborn will be senior Connell Davis, who averaged 6.1 yards per carry and racked up 491 yards a season ago. Texas A&M-Kingsville averaged 185 yards rushing last season – good for 30th in the nation. The Javelina backers will matchup against a Northwest defense that returns six starters and has allowed just five individuals to break 100 yards rushing in the team’s last 63 games. The Bearcats have finished in the top 10 nationally in run defense in three of the last four seasons including 2009 when the team allowed 89 yards per game – tops in the MIAA and 10th nationally. Northwest has lost its season opener only to win its remaining regular season contests and advance to the national championship game in each of the last three seasons. The Bearcats are 9-7 in season openers under head coach Mel Tjeerdsma, but are 14-2 in home openers at Bearcat Stadium.

Liberty Mutual to Present COY Award The 2009 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award will be presented to Northwest head coach Mel Tjeerdsma in a ceremony prior to tonight’s game. Tjeerdsma led the Bearcats to their 11th MIAA title and third national championship last season while finishing with a 14-1 record. Tjeerdsma needs five wins in 2010 to move into a tie for third place on Division II’s all-time wins list. He has 230 career victories in 26 years of coaching at the collegiate level.
It is a two-way battle for quarterback and the 2010 Hoggies will have a brand new look after the graduation of two-year starter and record-setting signal caller Billy Garza. Junior Nate Poppell attempted just seven passes last season while junior Daniel Ramirez hasn’t attempted a pass in a game since 2008. Whoever wins the job will have a talented group of receivers to throw to. Senior Ryan Lincoln, a two-time LSC South honoree, heads the group and needs 33 receptions this season to be Kingsville’s all-time leader.

t’s hard to find a more beautiful and more accommodating facility in Division II football than Northwest Missouri State’s Bearcat Stadium. Labeled “the crown jewel of the MIAA” by the Kansas City Star, Bearcat Stadium is the longest-running continuous site for football in all of NCAA Division II. Dating back to 1913, no other stadium has played host to its team’s games for so long. First named Memorial Stadium in 1917, and then Rickenbrode Stadium from 1961-2004, Bearcat Stadium has seen significant improvements this past decade. The east grandstand was completely rebuilt starting in 2000. In 2003, the new-and-improved stadium was unveiled, which included an increased seating capacity on the west side, chairback and railback seating, 10 luxury suites, a spacious and functional press area and a new scoreboard, complete with video board – one of few in a Division II football facility. The summer of 2007 saw the installation of FieldTurf and permanent lighting. Contributors for the project requested the new playing surface be named after current head coach Mel Tjeerdsma, and on June 28, 2007, the Northwest Board of Regents unanimously approved the proposal. Heading into 2010, the Bearcats are 30-1 at the facility since October of 2005. The facility has seen 10 NCAA playoff contests played since its renaming in 2004 – all Northwest wins.

Catch free live entertainment at the Bearcat Zone in College Park next to the stadium prior to each home game. Hit the grills with Northwest fans, get your picture taken with Bobby Bearcat and join the marching band, cheerleaders and dance team in a pep rally prior to each game. The “March to the Stadium” caps the celebration prior to each kickoff. During the game, listen for the Phi Sigma Kappa cannon shot after each Northwest score and keep count while Bobby Bearcat does pushups. Spend halftime with the Bearcat Marching Band: “The Musical Pride of Northwest.” Celebrate each Bearcat victory down on the field with coaches and players where you can get autographs, take pictures and play on the recently installed FieldTurf.

The Hickory Stick
S
ince 1931, the Northwest and Truman football teams have been playing for possession of a 30-inch piece of hickory that serves as the oldest traveling trophy in Division II football.
The history of the Hickory Stick dates back to 1930 when Northwest president Dr. Uel Lamkin sent Truman president Dr. Eugene Fair a piece of wood found on the very farm where Fair was born. The stick had been turned in the woodworking shop at Northwest and the lettering on the stick listed the scores of every football game between the two institutions from 1908 to 1930. The football game in 1931 was inaugurated as a means of determining who would own the trophy for the following year.

Homecoming After each game, the winner paints the tip of the stick in its school color. Northwest earned first possession of the Hickory Stick following its 7-0 win in 1931. The Bearcats have held the stick the past eight years and have won 13 of their last 14 games against the Bulldogs. Since 1931, Truman leads the all-time series 42-29-4 (75 games) and has held the trophy in 44 of 79 years. (Note: The two teams did not play from 1942 to 1945.)
In addition to the parade, the court and all of the festivities, there are two special traditions during homecoming week at Northwest. The first is the induction of the latest M-Club Hall of Fame class, which currently includes 37 teams and 94 individuals who were involved in athletics while at Northwest. The second is the naming of the Don Black Homecoming Most Valuable Player. Don Black was a running back for the Bearcat football team from 1951-1953 and helped lead Northwest to an MIAA title in 1952. In 1972, the Don Black Award was presented for the first time to the most valuable player in the annual homecoming contest. Since 1972, 35 athletes have received the honor.

Head Coach Mel Tjeerdsma Mel Tjeerdsma, a four-time national coach of the year honoree, is entering his 17th season at Northwest Missouri State and his 27th as a collegiate head coach. The winningest general in program history, Tjeerdsma has guided the Bearcats to 11 MIAA championships, three NCAA national championships and seven title game appearances in the last 12 seasons. Northwest was 0-11 in Tjeerdsma’s first season in 1994. The team is 171-30 since. Four years after his inaugural season with the team, the Bearcats became the first NCAA Division II squad to finish a season 15-0. Northwest won back-to-back national championships in 1998 and 1999. It was the University’s first national titles in any sport. Tjeerdsma was named AFCA Coach of the Year following both of his championship seasons. Northwest has competed in the national championship game for an unprecedented five straight seasons and walked away with its third national title last season following a 30-23 win against Grand Valley State. It completed a 14-1 campaign for Tjeerdsma and his Bearcats. Tjeerdsma received national coach of the year honors from three organizations, including the AFCA, Liberty Mutual and FieldTurf. Among his peers in Division II, Tjeerdsma is third on the active wins list (230) and with the seventh-best win percentage (.739). His 230 wins are the fourth-most in Division II history.

Tjeerdsma has more postseason victories than any other coach in Division II history. He has led Northwest to the playoffs 12 times in the last 14 seasons and sports a 29-9 postseason record. He is undefeated (7-0) in the semifinal round of the playoffs, 11-1 in opening games and 17-3 at home. Northwest made two first-round exits in its only appearances prior to Tjeerdsma’s arrival. The 2009 Bearcats became the 14th team in program history to go unbeaten in MIAA play. Nine teams under Tjeerdsma have finished 9-0 in league play since 1997. Following the 2007 season, running back Xavier Omon became the fourth player under Tjeerdsma to be drafted into the NFL. Omon was a sixth-round selection by the Buffalo Bills. Omon joins Chris Greisen (1999), Seth Wand (2003) and Dave Tollefson (2006) as Northwest players drafted after playing for Tjeerdsma. Fifteen Bearcats have either been drafted or have signed NFL contracts during Tjeerdsma’s tenure. Tjeerdsma has been named MIAA Coach of the Year 11 times (1995-2000, 2002, 20062009). He’s been named AFCA Regional Coach of the Year seven times (1996-2000, 2006, 2008).

In addition to his coaching duties, Tjeerdsma served as president of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) in 2006. It was the first time a Northwest coach has led the AFCA and the first time a Division II general has presided since 1999.
In his 16 years at Northwest, Tjeerdsma’s squads have produced 41 All-Americans. Included in the tally are 29 first-team All-Americans and 13 players who earned All-America honors in two or more seasons. Under Tjeerdsma, Northwest has produced 111 All-MIAA student-athletes, including 74 players who earned first-team honors. Seventytwo players have earned all-region honors with 46 being listed on the first team. Prior to coaching at Northwest, Tjeerdsma guided Austin College to three Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association
Championships (TIAA) and became the program’s all-time winningest coach. The Kangaroos were 59-38-4 in 10 seasons under Tjeerdsma and made two trips to the NAIA Division II playoffs. Tjeerdsma earned three TIAA Coach of the Year awards. Before his time at Austin, Tjeerdsma was the offensive coordinator at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, for eight years. He also served as the head track and field coach at Northwestern. The Red Raiders earned four trips to the NAIA Division II playoffs and won a national championship in 1983 with Tjeerdsma on staff. His offense twice led the nation in total offense and scoring. His track and field teams won three Tri-State Conference titles and five consecutive NAIA District 15 Indoor Championships. Prior to his collegiate coaching career, Tjeerdsma served as head football coach at Denison (Iowa) High School, where he guided his team to a 9-0 record and a 1975 state playoff berth. He earned Northwest Iowa Coach of the Year honors in 1972 after winning a state championship at Sioux Center High School. He was the Northwest Iowa Track and Field Coach of the Year in 1973, 1974 and 1975. Tjeerdsma earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Southern (S.D.) State in 1967. He earned his master’s degree from Northwest in 1977. Mel and his wife, Carol, live just outside of Maryville and have three married daughters and seven grandchildren.

Will Wagner
Assistant Head Coach Will Wagner has helped lead Northwest Missouri State to nine MIAA championships, seven national championship game appearances and three national titles since arriving in Maryville prior to the 1998 season. The Bearcats are 99-8 (.925) in conference play heading into the 2010 campaign with Wagner onboard. Wagner first served as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons before being hired full-time to serve as defensive backs coach. He remains in that capacity and was rewarded with the added title of assistant head coach prior to the 2007 season. Eleven defensive backs have combined to earn 15 All-MIAA honors during Wagner’s tenure including safety Myles Burnsides, who was named National Defensive Player
Mel Tjeerdsma in entering his 17th season at Northwest. Since the duo’s arrival in 1994, the Bearcats have won 11 MIAA championships, three NCAA championships and made seven title game appearances in the last 12 seasons. Year-in and year-out, Bostwick produces one of the top defenses in the nation. The Bearcats have led the MIAA in scoring defense in each of the last four seasons and in total defense in each of the last two. Northwest ranked 10th nationally in run defense, 11th in sacks and 18th in scoring defense in 2009. The Bearcats have finished in the top 10 nationally in stopping the run three times in the last four years. Only five individuals have posted 100 yards rushing against Northwest in the last 63 games heading into the 2010 season. Bostwick mentored four first-team
All-MIAA selections in 2005, the highest number in one season under his regime. He matched that total in both 2007 and 2009. Bostwick has coached 50 defenders who have combined to earn 77 All-MIAA honors. Prior to joining the staff at Northwest, Bostwick spent four years at Western Washington University in Mt. Vernon, Wash. He served as defensive coordinator at Nebraska Wesleyan, his alma mater, from 1986-1990. Bostwick holds a bachelor’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan, where he was a fouryear lettermen. He was inducted into the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame in October of 2006 and is the program’s third-leading tackler. Bostwick and his wife, Sue, reside in Maryville with their two children, Leah and Eric. Leah will be a first-year student at Northwest during the 2010-2011 academic year and will be a member of the Bearcat volleyball team.

Burnsides graduated following the 2009 season as a two-time All-American and a three-time all-conference honoree. Northwest has finished six of the last seven seasons with at least 10 defensive players recording interceptions. In 2009, 11 Bearcats picked off 25 passes – the secondhighest tally in the nation. The Bearcats have averaged more than 18 interceptions per season since 2004. It should come as no surprise then to learn that Wagner is an All-American defensive back in his own right. Wagner stood out as a four-year starter at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, from 1992-1995 and was named to his alma mater’s 20th Anniversary Team in the fall of 2009.
The Odessa, Texas, native resides in Maryville with his wife, Andrea, and their sons, Brooks and Brayden. Andrea is a 2000 Northwest graduate and is employed on campus in the office of University Advancement.
Adam Dorrel
Offensive Coordinator Northwest offensive coordinator Adam Dorrel has helped lead the Bearcats to an unprecedented five straight NCAA Division II championship appearances and the program’s third national title which came in 2009. In his six seasons as a full-time coach at his alma mater, Northwest is 75-12 (.862). 16
Dorrel’s 2009 offensive unit was arguably one of the best in the 90-plus year history of Northwest football. The Bearcats averaged more than 42 points and 474 yards per game and ranked in the top 10 nationally in four major offensive categories. Individually, the 2009 squad featured the nation’s leading receiver in Jake Soy, the nation’s fourth-leading passer in Blake Bolles and Division II’s fourth-leading rusher in LaRon Council. Soy was named
Dorrel continued national receiver of the year after hauling in 27 touchdowns – only the second player in Division II history to reach that number. Bolles set the MIAA’s single-season record for passing yards and passing touchdowns. Council was named the league’s most valuable offensive player. Impressive team and individual accolades have become the norm rather than the exception under Dorrel. Thirteen offensive stars have been named All-Americans in the last six seasons and the last three MIAA offensive MVPs have been Bearcats. Dorrel himself is a former Northwest All-American. He was a three-year captain for the Bearcats during his collegiate career as an offensive lineman in Maryville from 1994-1997. After earning his degree from Northwest, Dorrel spent a year as a graduate assistant at Northeastern State in Oklahoma. He became a graduate assistant the following season back at Northwest in 1999 when the team won the second of back-to-back national titles. Dorrel served coaching stints at Dakota State University in South Dakota and William Jewell College in Missouri before being appointed offensive line coach at Northwest in 2004. He was promoted to offensive coordinator prior to the 2007 season. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, are expecting their first child in October.

Richard Wright
Def. Line / Special Teams Richard Wright has served as Northwest’s defensive line coach and coordinator of special teams since 2004. The Bearcats have featured at least one All-American defensive lineman in every season since. Northwest tied for the most pass sacks in the nation in 2009 after 19 Bearcats combined for 48 sacks. The Bearcats have finished in the top 10 nationally in quarterback sacks in three of the last four seasons. Northwest’s advantage on special teams has become ever more noticeable under Wright. The Bearcats have blocked 43 kicks in Wright’s six seasons. Northwest blocked eight in 2009, including three in the postseason.
Charlie Flohr has been the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Northwest since 2006. He also serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Bearcats. In four seasons with Flohr on the coaching staff, Northwest is 36-0 with four MIAA titles in conference play and 53-6 overall with a national title and three second-place finishes. Flohr was the leader of the nation’s top quarterback and wide receiver combination in 2009. Jake Soy was named national receiver of the year after hauling in 27 touchdowns and leading Division II with 1,559 yards receiving. Blake Bolles was an All-American quarterback who set conference records with 42 touchdown passes and 4,145 yards passing. Northwest ranked second nationally in scoring (42 ppg), third in pass efficiency (172.21), sixth in total offense (474.27 ypg) and eighth in passing (298.93 ypg) in 2009. Northwest has ranked 10th, 32nd, 17th and now third nationally in pass efficiency under Flohr.
The Bearcats ranked third in the nation in net punting and 11th in yards allowed per punt return in 2007. In 2009, freshmen Tyler Shaw and Jordan Simmons helped the Bearcats lead the nation in kick return yards for part of the season. The unit finished 17th overall including two touchdowns, one each by Shaw and Simmons, and an average of more than 23 yards per return. Wright was a graduate assistant at Northwest in 1995 and 1996 when he was tight ends coach. Before coming back to Northwest in 2004, Wright was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at St. Ambrose (Iowa) University from 2000-2004. Wright also made stops at William Penn (Iowa) College in 1999, Central Methodist College (now University) in 1998, Dakota State University in 1997, Dana College from 1993-1994 and Cortland State in 1991. Covering several facets of coaching, Wright has been an offensive coordinator, linebackers coach, wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. Wright is a 1995 graduate of Dana (Neb.) College with a degree in physical education. He earned his master’s degree in physical education from Northwest in 1996. Wright and his wife, Sarah, reside in Maryville with their daughters, Grace and Kate. Sarah is a 1998 Northwest graduate.
Three Northwest receivers have earned AllAmerica honors under Flohr in Soy, Kendall Wright and tight end Mike Petersen. Wright finished a brilliant four-year career with 243 catches for 3,253 yards and 21 touchdowns. Peterson (first team) and Josh Gannan (second team) accounted for both All-MIAA tight ends in 2007. Flohr served as a graduate assistant with the Bearcats in 2002 and 2003. After obtaining his master’s degree at Northwest, Flohr was hired at conference-rival Truman, where he served as the Bulldogs’ wide receivers and recruiting coach. Flohr is a 2002 graduate of Dakota State University in Madison, S.D. He was a fouryear lettermen in football at his alma mater and was a two-time honorable mention all-conference selection at wide receiver. He graduated as the program’s all-time leader in punt returns. Flohr and his wife, Amy, reside in Maryville and have two sons, Adam and Austin. Amy is a 2004 Northwest graduate.

Playing a Man Down By Bryan Boettcher, Northwest Director of Athletic Media Relations The 2009 Northwest Missouri State football season was filled with the highest of highs – another perfect run through the MIAA, home playoff wins against Abilene Christian and California and the program’s third national championship. But in between his 38-yard interception return for a touchdown at Arrowhead Stadium and his five tackles against Grand Valley State in the finale, Bearcat safety Marcus Martin experienced the lowest of lows – the loss of his father, Steve. A father of four sons and a daughter, Steve was diagnosed with stomach cancer last August. Two months later, he was gone. “I remember playing basketball with my dad last Fourth of July at our uncles’ place,” said Martin. “About a month later, he started getting pains in his stomach and we didn’t know what was wrong with him.” Despite the diagnosis, Steve and his wife, Patricia, continued to make the two-and-a-half hour trip from Holden, Mo., to Maryville to watch their son play football. Steve stayed positive throughout Marcus recalled, but he could tell his father’s condition was deteriorating. “I went home after our game against Emporia State and when I saw my dad on Sunday, he was fine,” said Martin. “That Tuesday, I got a call from my sister, Janise, after one of my position meetings and she said dad wasn’t doing well. “When I got there he was immobile. He couldn’t talk, speak or anything. The nurses were transferring him into a larger room to accommodate our large family. My mom and I got on the elevator with the nurses as we were transferring him up, but he died on the way to the room.” Steve’s funeral was Friday, a day before Northwest’s homecoming contest with Washburn. It was the only game Martin missed last season. “The day before my dad died, he told me whatever happens that I had to keep moving and create my own life,” said Martin. “I took his advice. Football kept me occupied and kept my mind off of things.”

Martin averaged five tackles in his final six games of the 2009 season. He had a career-best eight stops in Northwest’s win against top-ranked Central Washington and finished the year as the Bearcats’ 10th-leading tackler. Marcus is the second eldest of the five Martin children. His older brother, Steven, played safety in high school, continued his career at Missouri Valley and served as inspiration for Marcus to attend college. That inspiration was challenged two days before Marcus was set to begin his first collegiate football practice five years ago. “(Former Northwest assistant coach Bart) Tatum called me and told me we had a problem,” said Martin. “He said I didn’t pass the clearinghouse, that I was an English class short. He said I could stay in Holden, take an English class at a community college and then transfer to Northwest or I could come to Maryville now and join the team in a year.” Marcus wasn’t recruited heavily from Holden despite playing both sides of the ball and rushing for nearly 2,000 yards as a senior. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to attend college. “My dad was the big sports guy,” said Martin. “Go to college, he said, work out, work hard and you
will be rewarded. My parents told me to keep my head up, get good grades and return to the field in a year. I decided to move to Maryville.” Marcus made his collegiate debut in front of a packed crowd at Bearcat Stadium in August of 2007. Even then Mother Nature forced him to wait a little longer as lightning cancelled Northwest’s opener with Arkansas Tech before a quarter could be played. “I did really well the first five minutes,” said Martin. “I recovered a fumble for a touchdown and later forced another fumble. Inside though, my heart was pounding. I couldn’t feel my legs because of all the adrenaline and then there was the crowd. I went from 150 fans in high school to more than 5,000 – it was kind of scary.” Thirty-six games, 104 tackles and a national championship ring later, Martin is set to begin his final season. At long last, he’ll do so as a starter with his family watching from the stands and with his dad watching from the skies. In December, he’ll graduate with a degree in corporate recreation and wellness and hopes to become a personal trainer in Denver with his friend and former teammate, Thomas Smith. He will take his dad’s advice, keep moving forward and create his own life.

Northwest Missouri State’s cheerleading team claimed its first national championship last January at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. Northwest’s mascot, Bobby Bearcat, placed third and the Bearcat Steppers placed sixth. All three Bearcat squads are under the guidance of coach Jason Sack.

ne of the premier and highly anticipated sporting events in all of Division II football is the Fall Classic at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. What started as a one-time event is now in its ninth season with this year’s contest slated for Nov. 13. The annual game between national powerhouses Northwest and Pittsburg State attracts nearly 23,000 fans on average to the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. The first game in 2002, dubbed “The Clash of the Champions,” brought in a series-record 26,695 fans.

The magnitude of the Northwest-Pittsburg State rivalry is something all college programs aspire to be a part of. In seven of eight meetings, both teams were ranked in the top 20. Four times, both teams were ranked in the top 10 including 2004, when for the first time in Division II history the two top-ranked teams met in the regular season finale. The 2007 clash marked the first overtime contest played between the two programs. An Xavier Omon leap into the end zone on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard-line clinched a 37-34 Northwest victory. Northwest improved to 6-2 in the Arrowhead series with its 30-10 win in 2009.

President Dr. John Jasinski Dr. John Jasinski is Northwest’s 10th president, a position he has held since July 1, 2009. His first year as president was highlighted not only by the Bearcats winning national championships in both football and cheerleading, but also by record student enrollment, innovative academic partnerships and those involving business and community, strong retention and graduation rates, the largest cash gift in the University’s history and an emphasis being placed on strategic thought management. Prior to being chosen as Northwest’s president, Dr. Jasinski served Northwood University
from 2007 to 2009 as executive vice president/ chief academic and operating officer, where he oversaw academics and operations. He founded and served as president of Jasinski Consulting Services from 2001 to 2009 and provided consulting and training on leadership and organizational assessment with a variety of organizations. He also served as a coach to leaders and leadership teams regarding organizational assessment and improvement and as a coach/consultant to oversight boards. Furthermore, Dr. Jasinski was employed at Northwest from 1986 to 2001 as a faculty member, department chair and associate provost and received awards such as the University’s Tower Service Award and National Broadcast Adviser of the Year. Dr. Jasinski is nationally known for his work with the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP, part of the Higher Learning Commission and Northwest’s accreditor),
having aided in the design of the accrediting method, and for his work with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been a judge for the Missouri Quality Award and serves on the board of directors for St. Francis Hospital and Health Services of Maryville. He also has helped write and edit organizational self-assessments across the country, is published nationally and is a presenter at national and international conferences. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Educational Leadership/ Higher Education Administration) and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Central Michigan University. Dr. Jasinski and his wife, Denise, are the parents of four children, Matt, Joe, Leah and Lucas.
Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter Dr. Bob Boerigter has served as Director of Athletics at Northwest since May 2001. He oversees Northwest’s 16 intercollegiate sports. During his tenure, Dr. Boerigter has provided direction for several facility and programmatic changes and improvements to Bearcat athletics. The department’s most recent projects were the renovation of the D.C. Colt Training room, the resurfacing of Herschel Neil Track and the High Rise Tennis Courts. Back in 2002, Boerigter administered the initial “Clash of the Champions” football contest at Arrowhead Stadium between Northwest
and Pittsburg State. That game set an NCAA Division II single-game attendance record of 26,695 and has since served as a model that other Division II programs have emulated. The “Fall Classic,” as it is now known, has been played annually since 2002 at the home of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. The 2012 Fall Classic is scheduled for November 13 at 2 p.m. Dr. Boerigter is a former National Athletics Administrator of the Year and is heavily involved in the governance of the MIAA and NCAA. He is currently the chair of the MIAA Institutional Representatives Council and is a member of the Division II Championships Committee and the Division II Management Council. Dr. Bob is a past chairman of the NCAA Division II National Football Committee and recently completed a five-year term as a member of the Division II Athletics Directors Association.
Dr. Boerigter holds a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College (Iowa) and received his master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He received his doctorate from the University of Utah. Prior to Northwest, Dr. Boerigter served a 13-year stint as Director of Athletics, Chair of Physical Education and Professor of Physical Education at Hastings College where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. He has also held administrative and coaching positions at Northwestern, Adams State College and Whitworth College. Dr. Bob and his wife, Mary, have two grown sons, John and Marc, and two grandchildren.

Football Ambassadors
The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat Football Ambassadors perform a number of important functions for the football program. As ambassadors, they give campus tours to prospective recruits. They also help with pre-game and post-game festivities, hosting alumni, fans and families. They also have an important role with the players’ families. They stay in direct contact with family members of each player, giving updates on the progress of the team and the individual player.
