The 4th-ranked Northwest Rangers capped off their first undefeated regular season since 2000 with a MACJC North Division Championship and No. 1 seed into the state playoffs with a 31-14 win over Itawamba Thursday night at Bobby Franklin Field. Northwest ran its nation-leading win streak to 11 games with the victory, darting out to a 24-0 halftime cushion and never looking back. Leading 17-0 midway through the second quarter with Itawamba threatening inside the Rangers’ red zone, Jeff Carlyle picked off Justin Rogers’ pass off a fake field goal and scampered 93 yards the other way in the most important defensive play of the game. Northwest tacked on a Jay Jones 1-yard touchdown run and Myles White 10-yard touchdown reception to make it 31-0 with 11:22 left in the third quarter. Itawamba wouldn’t go away quietly, however, scoring twice in a 5:19 span late in the third to cut the lead to 31-14. The Indians put together a game-best, 9-play, 60-yard drive capped by a DeShawn McGaughy 12-yard touchdown run. He would add a second touchdown run from 2-yards out, taking advantage of a Northwest fumble off a big sack from Donovan Rogers. The Indians drove down to the Northwest 7-yard line with 7:26 left in the fourth, threatening yet again, but turned the ball over on downs that sealed the game for the Rangers. Northwest out-gained Itawamba 404-287 on the evening, led by Brent Osborn who was 18 of 24 for 227 yards and a touchdown pass to White. Jones rushed 22 times for 92 yards and two scores, followed by 46 yards on the ground from Calvin Malone. Offensively, Itawamba was led by William Green who had five catches for 66 yards and D. McGaughy who had two scores. Michael McKinney and the Northwest Alumni Association Player of the Year, Sam Small, each had 11 tackles to pace the Ranger defense who also picked off three passes.

Clayton Moore hit Javon Bell in stride for a 62-yard touchdown on the opening play from scrimmage that set the tempo and visiting 12th-ranked Gulf Coast rolled up 562 yards of total offense to eliminate 4th-ranked Northwest from the MACJC State Playoffs in a 52-24 rout at Bobby Franklin Field. Gulf Coast’s top-ranked rushing offense pilled up 318 yards on the ground to Northwest’s 219 and forced four Ranger turnovers that proved costly in defeat for the home team. The Bulldogs improved to 8-2 overall and advance to play the winner of No. 10 Copiah-Lincoln and East Mississippi in next weekend’s state championship game. The Rangers had a nation-best 11-game win streak snapped in falling to 9-1. After Bell’s 65-yard touchdown reception, Gulf Coast scored on four-straight possessions to end the half, scoring on drives of 75, 80, 63 and 46 yards to take a commanding 31-7 lead at intermission. The Bulldogs had 361 of their 562 total yards in the first half, while holding Northwest to just 183. Northwest’s lone score of the half came on Jamal Mosley’s 2-yard touchdown reception with 2:15 left in the second. A 28-yard Kevin Buford field goal cut the lead to 31-10 on the Rangers’ second possession of the second half. Northwest had it first-and-10 from the 12-yard line but settled for three. Gulf Coast responded two drives later, using a short field after holding Northwest on fourth-and-2, and going 39 yards in four plays capped by a 12-yard run by the quarterback Moore. Myles White’s 47-yard touchdown from Brent Osborn just before the third quarter ended brought it within 38-17 MGCCC. The Bulldogs added a 15-yard touchdown run by Mo Milliam and 72-yard burst from Lamar Smith -- two of five rushing touchdowns on the day -- to cap the scoring for MGCCC. Buford added a 1-yard run for Northwest to make the final 52-24. MGCCC’s defense held Northwest to just 3 of 15 on third downs on the afternoon, while picking off three Osborn passes. Will Copeland had a game-high 11 tackles and forced fumble, while Lamar Johnson was responsible for two interceptions. Northwest’s hopes for a bowl berth are still looming in the wings but they’ll have to wait two weeks to find out if their season will end. Gulf Coast moves on to play for state championship.
