A PUBLICATION OF NORTHLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY

Northland Library will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Happy Holidays!

What is more important in a library than anything…. . than everything else.. is the fact that it exists." Archibald MacLeish

rchibald MacLeish certainly captured the essence of what a library is for all of us, didn’t he? How did you engage with Northland Public Library this past year? Did you and your family attend one of our many programs? Did you stop in to make some quick color copies or did you use our computer center when you needed to check on something and were not close to your home laptop? Did you drop off a book to our NOMAD kiosk or did you help out with our annual book sale? No matter where or how you connected with Northland Public Library this past year, know that for more than 40 years, we have been serving the communities of Franklin Park, Bradford Woods, Ross, McCandless, and Marshall with the educational, cultural, entertainment, and life-long learning programming and services that you need and ask us to provide. However, we couldn’t do this without our supportive and caring municipal partners who contribute nearly 60 percent of our operating budget. The other 40 percent must come from other sources, including private monies from the generosity of individuals like you. A tax-deductible, year-end gift to the Library through the Northland Public Library Foundation can ensure that these programs and services continue for 2015 and for the long-term. You can make a thoughtful financial contribution in several ways: donate online – securely – at www.northlandlibrary.org/foundation, or just stop by the Library and request an annual appeal brochure. Inside the brochure you’ll get a collectible Northland bookmark as our way of saying “thanks” for your financial support. You and more than 36,000 card holders of all ages embrace the Northland Public Library and all that it offers to the communities it serves. Archibald MacLeish was right. What is most important in a library – in Northland Public Library – is the fact that it does exist. ANNUAL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

TUESDAY NIGHT BOOK DISCUSSION

On December 2 at 7 p.m., the Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. During her treatment for cancer, Mary Anne Schwalbe and her son, Will spent many hours sitting in waiting rooms together. To pass the time, they would talk about the books they were reading. Once, by chance, they read the same book at the same time, and an informal book club of two was born. This memoir of caregiving, mourning, and love is also about the joy of reading, and how that joy is multiplied when we share it with others. On January 6 we will discuss The Wolf and the Watchman: A Father, a Son, and the C.I.A. by Scott C. Johnson.

READINGS IN ALTERNATIVE EVERYTHING

SECOND FRIDAY book DISCUSSION

The discussion in December will be held on December 12, and is focused on The 100-Year-Old-Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. A reluctant centenarian has ended up in a nursing home, but the problem is that he’s still in good health and really isn’t interested in the birthday party planned for him at the home…and he’d like a little more control over his vodka consumption. So he climbs out the window and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected and quirky journey. Newcomers are always welcome at this enjoyable, informal discussion. Bring a brown bag lunch at 11:30 a.m. The library provides a beverage and the discussion begins at noon. No registration is necessary for this discussion group. In January, the group will discuss the highly controversial novel, The Dinner, by Herman Koch.

MYSTERY LOVERS BOOK DISCUSSION

December’s meeting will feature a mystery movie, Blue Velvet and holiday refreshments. Newcomers are welcome to join the group on Thursday, December 18, at 6:30 p.m. No registration is necessary. January’s mystery book discussion will focus on From Doon With Death by Ruth Rendell.
