SAFER in North Haven because of paramedics By Kyle Swartz The North Haven Citizen
North Haven’s Fire Department began offering paramedic services, or Advanced Life Support (ALS) capabilities, on Dec. 31, 2009. On their first call ever, town paramedics administered two drugs, medications they could not legally provide before ALS certification, to a diabetic resident in need. “We have so many more options now pharmacologically,” said Fire Chief Vincent Landisio of his department’s paramedic program, now over six months old. “That to me is the most impressive thing from this.” Passed at the 2009 budget referendum, the new program has hired four new
paramedic staff, in addition to allowing four pre-existing department employees to become or act as paramedics. In total, eight licensed paramedics now serve the town, two per shift. North Haven’s four freshly-hired paramedics were also crosstrained to combat blazes, so each of four rotating shifts has also acquired an additional firefighter. North Haven’s entire fire department is at least EMT trained. Before the program’s inception, several town firefighters were also qualified at a paramedic-level, a designation above EMT certification. Legally, however, they could provide only so much intervention.

Residents wishing to weigh in about town’s search for a new superintendent of schools can do so July 29 at a series of focus groups. To be held inside the North Haven High School auditorium, the meetings with Cooperative Educational Services’ Tom Jokubaitis and Jim Ritchie, retired superintendents hired as consultants to lead the search, will be open to the public. Teachers and support staff will meet with the consultants from 2 to 2:50 p.m. At 3 p.m., public officials will speak with Jokubaitis and Ritchie. Community members and organizations will be handed the floor at 4 p.m., before parents and students are given the remainder of the day, from 5 to 5:50 p.m. “These groups will meet with the consultants to give their opinions on what characteristics they want to see in a new superintendent,” said interim superintendent Patricia Brozek. “Then we will see what the next step is after that.” Former superintendent Sara-Jane Querfeld stepped down this month to begin a position in North Branford’s education system as director of curriculum and instruction.

Fontana explains laws affecting seniors By Paul Colella Special to The North Haven Citizen
State Representative and third selectman Steve Fontana spoke July 15 at North Haven’s senior center, updating the audience on new state laws affecting senior citizens. Fontana referenced 2010 legislation dealing with longterm care, Medicaid coverage, auto discounts for older drivers, and funding for Alzheimer’s research and respite. “I am pleased to be here today speaking to the seniors about some news laws that have become effective or will be effective upon passage,” stated Fontana. “It is very important to work at the federal and state level to provide assis-
tance to seniors, especially during these hard economic times.” First, Fontana addressed the Ct. Homecare Program for Elders (CHCPE), which covers medical and non-medical support services needed by individuals 65 or older to avoid institutionalization. In 2009, Fontana said, the legislature imposed cost-sharing on all participants in the state-funded portion of the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders, not just those with incomes above 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Individuals were required to pay 15 percent of their care costs, which for higher income individuals was on top of the amount they already paid. A new law, which became effective on July 1, 2010,

nuity mortgages as income or assets in certain circumstances. These laws would be effective upon passage. Some seniors asked if there were going to be changes to ConnPACE, a service that helps those eligible afford the cost of most prescription medicines, as well as insulin and insulin syringes. Fontana assured the seniors that there were going to be no alterations. “ConnPACE is a successful program and it will not be phased out,” he said. “We are working to provide the best services for our seniors, but there is a lot of competing
challenges that cause us to make difficult choices because of limited resources and financial difficulties.” Another law discussed was the Auto Discount for Older Drivers. This law provides a minimum five percent discount on auto insurance, good for two years, available for eligible drivers aged 60 and older. To qualify, seniors must successfully complete an accident prevention course that the Department of Motor Vehicles approves. A new law specifies that the course must be four hours long. This law

reduces the contribution to 6 percent. Another new law, effective on July 1, 2010, requires the Department of Social Services (DSS), when sending renewal forms to CHCPE participants, to also notify the agency operating the particular home care program in which the client participates. Further, Fontana explained a new bill dealing with Medicaid coverage for long-term care services. Two changes could be made in how DSS treats an individual’s income and assets when determining his or her eligibility for Medicaid. Fontana said a nursing home resident’s spouse would now keep a greater amount of the couple’s combined liquid assets when eligibility is first determined. He added that the bill requires DSS to get permission from the federal Medicaid agency to exempt reverse an-

will be effective on Oct. 1, 2010. “I worked with AARP to change the eight-hour course to four hours because people couldn’t afford to pay for the eight hours and the time was too long so the hours were reduced to four without taking away from the quality of the course,” explained Fontana. “It is a course designed to help individuals to refresh or brush-up on their driving skills.” The final law Fontana spoke about deals with funding for Alzheimer’s research and respite. The Biomedical Research Trust Fund, created with Tobacco Settlement Funds, can now be used to grant funds for biomedical research into Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. Previously, the funds could be used only for heart disease, cancer and other tobacco-related disease research. The 2011 budget adjustments also include an additional $500,000 for the Alzheimer’s respite care program. This law became effective on July 1, 2010.
The seniors listened attentively and were pleased by these new laws. After Fontana’s talk, several seniors asked questions and expressed their concerns about the state’s economy, the loss of jobs and businesses closing their doors for good or relocating to another state. Others mentioned concerns about high energy costs and healthcare costs. “We are working hard at the federal and state levels for healthcare reform and to keep costs down to help our seniors,” Fontana said. “There has been the elimination on co-pays for preventive services. As far as stimulating and creating new jobs in our state, we need to be competitive by making this state more attractive to people looking for jobs and wanting to raise their families here.” After the presentation, Fontana promised to return in the fall for another visit. “We have a lot of work ahead of us and challenges to face, but we want to work for all the people,” Fontana said. “We will do our very best to assist our seniors because they are the backbone of every community.”

wait for an ambulance to come with paramedics.” Prior to the program, North Haven’s fire department could utilize just three drugs during calls – oxygen, epinephrine from an EpiPen and oral sugar. The latter they could give only to responsive individuals. Now, 30 different medicines can be used. “We’re saving more lives,” Marcarelli said. “We’re helping people better than we ever could. We can do more things at an advanced skill level than we could before.” Since Dec. 31, the Fire Department has received 1,774 calls, according to Landisio. Of that, he estimated 70 to 80 percent have involved delivering paramedic-level assistance. “The heart monitor alone can be used on pretty much every call,” Marcarelli said. “Almost any single call could be made into an ALS call,” added Ben Fox, hired early last September as a paramedic. Fox, along with fellow new paramedic employees Chris Shea, Rich Filosi and Kevin Delaney, spent 15 weeks at the Connecticut Firefighter Academy before beginning work in December. Existing employees trained or now allowed to serve as paramedics are Steve Hayden, Scott Martus, Paul Januszewski and Jeff Haag. Paramedics, having re-
ceived 1,400 hours of medical training, can legally employ over 50 medications through IV, IO (oral), IM (muscular) and PO (bone). Additionally, a paramedic can perform an endotracheal intubation, in which a tube is inserted through the mouth into the lungs to create a secure airway; EMTs are not trained in this. Importantly, paramedics are trained to recognize fatal cardiac rhythms and supply treatment prior to heart tissue dying. Paramedics are also trained in advanced cardiac life support should a heart stop beating. They carry defibrillators and medication which can stop and reverse bad cardiac rhythms. “This is something we’ve been fighting for both as fire administrators and as a fire union for a long time,” Marcarelli said. “This is something we needed, something long overdue.” Despite being undeniably beneficial, the program was no certainty to pass in 2009 due to cost concerns and voting questions. Some residents protested that town officials said the program would only be established if the 2009-10 budget was passed the first time around. However, the program was approved with the budget. An annual program cost of

$500,000 will be initially offset by federal funding from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program. The SAFER grant will provide $156,030 for year one of the program, $138,700 in year two, and then $86,680 and $52,080 before running out. Further, North Haven’s firefighter association has calculated that employing four new workers would save approximately $250,000 a year in overtime payments, so that when the SAFER grant expires, the program would only cost around $250,000 a year. Cognizant of the town’s improved emergency response abilities, residents have been calling. “The call volume has increased,” Landisio said. “The work load has increased for everybody. Now they’re making runs
down to hospitals.” Accordingly, the entire department, not just paramedics, has begun to better their knowledge of ALS services, thus increasing life-saving capabilities across the board. “The guys are always there to help us,” said Hayden. “We can’t do everything ourselves. We may need a firefighter to setup an IV bag, or to get this or that out of our bag.” “Now we can anticipate what the paramedics are going to need based on past calls,” Marcarelli said. “On the way to a call, the EMTtrained guys are pulling out drugs the paramedics need to use, which they can do, because ultimately the paramedics will make the final call whether to use them.” “This is a lot of responsibility for the department,” Marcarelli added, “but the guys have really stepped up.”

Local teacher spends summer in the ‘real world’ of electronics By Kyle Swartz The North Haven Citizen
North Haven resident Chris Porto, a pre-electrical engineering educator at Norwich Technical High School, is enhancing his teaching capabilities through a summer externship, focusing on technology similar to Wii remotes. Through the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, Porto will spend four weeks at Ultra Electronics Measurement System Inc. in Wallingford, which produces military-grade controllers for
computerized combat drones and robots. Accordingly, Porto must be mum on some points. “I’m working on a project which I can’t really talk about,” he said. While the purpose is secretive, Porto can discuss his assignment’s technology. “A lot of it has to do with motion sensor technology, as used in Wii remotes,” he said. “That’s what we’re going toward – sensors that can sense movement and acceleration in three axis.” Next school semester, Porto

will take his newly advanced knowledge back to his students. He said he expects that his externship will lead to classroom activities such as constructing robots and other hands-on curriculum. “We’re very big on learning by doing in technical schools,” he said. “A lot of technology I’m working on can be applied to robotics and robotic projects.” Porto was a professional engineer for over two decades before becoming a high school teacher four years ago. “I decided to take the plunge,” he said. “Engineering work just wasn’t that satisfying any-

He began instructing pre-electrical engineering classes in Norwich. Nearby Three Rivers Community College offered additional learning opportunities for his classes, and he began taking them there. Porto formed a friendship with a Three Rivers professor, who had participated in a CBIA externship the summer before. “She emailed me,” he said. “She thought I would enjoy it too.” Porto and his Norwich teaching partner, Ernie Todd, filled out online applications. Both underwent a series of interviews, including sit-downs with United Illuminating and Connecticut Light and Power. Porto’s talk with UEMS was especially auspicious, he said, because he knew several employees there from his former vocation. Perhaps encouraged by a good word from Porto’s past associates, but mostly because he was highly qualified and held laudable intentions, UEMS accepted him for an externship in late May. “I think they selected me because of my professional background, my experience as an engineer, and because I’m teaching pre-electrical engineering,” he said. “When filling out the application, you have to summarize what you hope to get out of the externship. I wrote that I wanted to learn the most current practices of the industry of electrical engineering because I want my students to be prepared for the real world.” Porto’s first day was July 6. “For four weeks I will be like a regular employee,” he said. “I keep normal hours. I am treated like a regular employee.” Specifically, Porto is helping build circuit boards for motion-sensitive military joysticks. “They look like video game controllers,” he said. In explaining his project’s advanced technology, Porto said the current buzzword is “MEMs,” or micro-electromechanical. “MEMs” are electromechanical devices See Porto, page 12

Music under the Stars, North Haven’s free summer concert series, will continue Tuesday, July 27, at 7 p.m. on the Town Green with Parrot Beach, a Jimmy Buffet tribute band. The five-piece group draws from Buffet’s canon, while adding their own twist on the island singer’s songs. According to Parrot Beach’s website, even non-Buffet fans will enjoy their particular style. Additionally, Parrot Bay will perform lesser-known Buffet numbers, selections potentially unknown to passing fans of the singer and his
Coral Reefer Band. For more information, visit parrotbeach.com. Music Under the Stars is presented by the Department of Community Services, in conjunction with the North Haven business community. All concerts are scheduled for Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on the Town Green unless noted otherwise. Parking is available at the Town Hall Annex and Town Pool lots. Attendees should assume all concerts are on the Green regardless of weather. Those concerned about the weather can contact the Recreational Center info-line at (203) 234-2535 after 5 p.m. If the recording under “Special Events/ Trips” states

Parents in North Haven continue substance abuse vigilance By David Marchesseault Special to the North Haven Citizen
Jay McGuiness of Kings Highway, who serves on the North Haven Substance Abuse Prevention Council, was appointed to the group’s eight-member steering committee in the spring and was assigned the responsibility of “Parent Education and Prevention.” Rather than wait until after the school’s summer vacation, McGuiness formed a parents committee in late June. With the goal of limiting the 5:30 p.m. parent meetings scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of each month to an hour, he has arranged to hold the gatherings in the “Game Room” at the Town Recreation Center on Lindsley Street. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday,
July 28, at the center. Meetings are open to the public, and all parents are urged to get involved. McGuiness put it simply, “Your involvement will save lives.” McGuiness and two other parents are being trained this summer as new facilitators who will be able to teach a program called “Courage to Speak – Courageous Parenting 101.” The course is offered in Norwalk by the Courage to Speak Foundation, which trains “interested professionals who work with youth and families.” They note that it is a fact that children will be repeatedly offered alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, beginning in middle school. The multi-session training teaches the facilitators how to help other parents of children in elementary school through high school. In regard to why parents
are targeted, the foundation’s brochure reads, “Research identifies parents as the greatest influence on their child’s drug use behaviors and with the greatest opportunity to positively influence their child’s healthy decisions.” They state that despite the degree of concern expressed by teens about drug abuse, most parents are simply unaware of the peer pressure and cultural impact of substance abuse on their children, nor do they realize their potential power to offset that reality. A record of the “inaugural meeting” of 10 parents on June 23 references some sobering statistics drawn from the “2010 SAPC Student Survey” of children in grades 8, 10 and 12. The following is a summation of the information provided in the draft of the committee minutes. 31.4% of students sur-
veyed drank alcohol in prior month vs. 14.6% in U.S. 45% of students surveyed in grades 10 and 12 had alcohol in prior month 2.3% of North Haven students surveyed used cocaine vs. .4% in U.S. North Haven students surveyed see their parents as “less disapproving” of alcohol use than U.S. 43% of those surveyed in grades 10 and 12 were at a party serving alcohol with parental consent 17% of students surveyed in grade 8 were at a party serving alcohol with parent consent 21% of students surveyed had been offered, sold or given an illegal drug at school in the past year. Some of the goals set by the fledgling organization are to raise awareness of the substance abuse issues in the community; develop resources such as policies on a “Safe House” program, as well as family procedures; provide monthly presentations for families, expanding to bimonthly in six months; and to raise the level of concern throughout the community. Meanwhile, McGuiness said that there will be a drive to increase membership, develop multiple ways to communicate the SAPC message,
and continue to plan for the future. With an emphasis on being proactive, rather than reactive, he cautioned anyone who might believe that involvement in the new parent group was automatically indicative of a personal crisis with substance abuse. He concluded, “There is general agreement that knowledge is power, and this stigma must be overcome!” Emphasizing the “Courageous Parenting” program that will be provided in the fall will be free, McGuiness pointed out some of the important issues described in the foundation’s materials: Teen drug/tobacco/alcohol abuse and the culture of party time Substance abuse and the psychology of addiction Guidance to reduce the risk of substance abuse in children Better communication for all concerned, including elimination of enabling behavior Handling stress and the power of denial Steps to follow, including parenting styles and other resources After announcing that the next prescription drug “take back event” has been scheduled for Oct. 23, the parent group shared the following

Principal Linda Cahill was delighted to accept a heart defibrulator for the Green Acres Elementary School. The North Haven Rotary Club is supporting a drive to provide several more defribulators in public buildings throughout the community. There are presently eight townowned Automated External Defribulators (AEDs) made by Medtronic, of which three have been provided through the efforts of the local Rotary Club. One was purchased recently through a donation from Mario Landino, the owner of Paul Mitchell Academy on Washington Avenue, and a second through the Rotary club’s partnership with the Kids for Kids organization at NHHS last April. A third AED was donated directly to the schools from the service club, and the group is currently seeking a $3,000 matching

Yaccarino ready to solve state’s problems
To the editor: Recently I was able to attend a question and answer session at McDonald’s led by David Yaccarino, a Republican running for state representative from North Haven. The meeting and discussion was insightful in demonstrating some of the problems facing our town. We are currently challenged by many economic difficulties: low job growth, high unemployment, and hefty tax burdens. Our currently elected representative, Steve Fontana, not only isn’t planning adequate solutions to these problems; his voting record suggests that he has

his party and not his town’s true interests at heart. David Yaccarino by contrast is seeking to remedy our troublesome situation. His focus is on curtailing state spending and creating incentives to bring more businesses and thus create jobs in Connecticut. North Haven already bears a disproportionate share of the burden in funding our state government, and Mr. Yaccarino is determined to give our town fair standing at Hartford. He also recognized that politics take compromise, and was forthright in the necessity to work with all parties and persons to solve Connecticut’s difficulties. I saw a man that night who is ready and willing to assist North Haven improve economically and bring jobs to our town and state. That man is David Yaccarino. Benjamin Gritz North Haven

“I’m sorry to hear this. Hopefully there will be other corporate sponsors.” “That is disappointing. Isn’t this the last minute? More people should be jumping in to support not taking themselves off the list. Perhaps we should take them off our list of places to shop.” “That’s the attitude and
action that may have possibly caused the loss of the s p o n s o r s h i p . Corporations have had economic problems the last couple of years too and have to look to see what they can cut. If it meant cutting the sponsorship to save someone’s job, I think that is a good decision.”

capitol, which is a good thing. The thing that gives me pause, however, is how he has seemingly been distancing himself from his stint as second selectman to Janet McCarty. Notably he has said in the past few weeks that he had no knowledge of nor was he one of the people consulted when the Quebecor bankruptcy claim was discussed and no decision made on how to proceed, which led to the filing period lapsing and costing the taxpayers of this town almost $361,000 in unrecoverable dollars. I don’t understand how
To the editor: I received in the mail recently my “Hartford update” that arrives periodically from Steve Fontana. In it, he cites the accomplishments the party has made in the past session and acknowledges the work that still needs to be done. I notice that he makes it a point time and again to let the public know how he works closely with the opposition party (particularly Mr. Fasano) to get things done at the state

someone who can be so hands on in Hartford, who attempts to work across the aisle to get things done, who reaches out to endorse the probate judge candidate from another town, whose camaraderie with his Republican counterpart is well known (indeed, they worked together on trying to secure jobs for laid off Quebecor workers) could purport to know nothing about this incident at all. I wonder if Mr. Fontana runs against Mr. Freda in the next election cycle (as I suspect he will), which representative we will be getting — the one who interjects himself into both sides of the political landscape, or the one who picks and chooses his alliances for political expediency? Bring back ‘Patriots and Scoundrels’
To the editor: I agree that your fine newspaper has been enhanced by the articles, interviews, and the wonderful series “Patriots and Scoundrels” by Paul Colella. His style of writing, his insightful interviews, and his knack for writing great cliffhangers are greatly appreciated. I miss my “Patriots and Scoundrels” weekly fix. Please, please, please bring it back to us. Thanks to Robert and Elizabeth Corday for getting this important ball rolling. Janice Bruce North Haven
Transparency lacking in town government
To the editor: Town government activity censored? Let’s begin with the open-
door type town government. Maybe there’s an open door we don’t know about, or maybe we just weren’t given a key. We cannot ask the Board of Education any questions, so there are no answers available that address our concerns — attending such a meeting is a waste of time as it is only one-sided. We might as well speak to a wall. I can’t recall the last time a Zoning Board meeting, Zoning Board of Appeals meeting, or Cemetery Commission meeting ran on NHTV. The June 3 Selectmen’s meeting aired four days and was pulled, never to air again — “not a favorable event for Freda.” There’s a lot of repetitive fillers to fill in those empty time slots. I’d much rather watch Seinfeld reruns as that is much more entertaining, although not informative to what’s happening in North Haven. We never heard any more about the Stiles Will issue as it connects to the ongoing Public Works project. What about the Stiles Fund? Where’s the money? June 11 issue of the Citizen, page 5 “Building department investigation continues; questions remain” — Andy Vallambroso states, “Things I’ve seen up to this date have been very troublesome to me,” he said to Freda. “I am hoping your administration follows through on this, and that nothing gets swept under the rug. There’s a lot of money possibly missing,” Vallambroso added. “With the budget deficits, that’s really not fair to people. ” One week later, in the June 18 issue of the Citizens, the Building Department investigation came to an abrubt end. Does six months seem long enough to do a thorough investigation going back several years? Something does not seem right, as it takes time to connect the dots. What don’t you want us to know, Mike Freda? We deserve to know everything! Morris Pedersen North Haven

stance Abuse and Prevention Council want to express our best wishes to all of the graduates and their families for future success. As always, this will be a busy summer for graduation parties. There is much to celebrate. Nearly everyone knows that it is against the law in the United States for young people under the age of 21 to drink alcohol. Furthermore, research shows that the earlier children or teenagers use alcohol or marijuana, the more likely they are to become dependent on drugs or alcohol later in life. While there are serious penalties involved for anyone caught breaking these laws, the greater harm may be the message that parents or other adults send when they serve people who are underage. This is indeed a summer to be thankful and to celebrate. Please do it safely and responsibly. Thank you, North Haven Substance Abuse Prevention Council

“ inding Masonicare’s Assisted Living F was like a happy ending in a fairy tale.
”
“My aunt had lived alone, with no children. When her dementia became worse, we had people come in to care for her. Unfortunately, we had many negative experiences. So I decided to look at memory care communities in the area. I knew about Masonicare’ s great reputation and heard that they were opening a memory care assisted living community called The Hearth. My aunt was actually one of the first residents to come here. To this day, they still treat her as if she is their only resident! And it shows: she‘s gained a much-needed 20 pounds, is happy and feels trusting again.
Bonnie Pasqualoni, niece of Hearth resident
So while the road to The Hearth at Masonicare wasn’t easy at times, we are delighted to be here. I guess you could say it was a happy ending… and a happy beginning for my aunt and me.” Read more about Bonnie’s story at www.MasonicareHearth.org or call 800-382-2244 for more information or a personal tour. Leukemia survivor reaches out to the community By Paul Colella Special to the North Haven Citizen
It has often been said that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. For North Haven resident and five-year cancer survivor Dan Riccio, his crusade in reaching out to those afflicted with cancer is raising money and awareness
for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “I was feeling very sluggish, had a loss of appetite and suffered weight loss so I went to my doctor, who was treating me at the time for a fungus on my foot. After I told him how I was feeling, he took a blood test and some tests, and the results showed that I had leukemia,” stated Riccio. “I
Carla Pelliccio and Dan Riccio, community service co-workers. was told that I only had a 20 percent survival rate. At that moment, a heavy question of ‘what do I do first?’ weighed on my mind. After solemn prayer and reflection, I was determined that I was going to make it despite the odds.” Riccio further explained
that he entered the hospital on July 6, 2005 and underwent intense chemotherapy for one month, and then five follow-up visits for five months. He was a patient at the Father McGiveney Cancer Center at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. “A person has 500 pallets in his or her body, but I only had two pallets, making me very weak with a white complexion. I couldn’t get a match for a bone marrow transplant, which is a necessity for the survival of leukemia patients,” recalled Riccio. “I was very fortunate to survive this horrible and scary ordeal, and I believe that my extreme religious beliefs and faith, along with the wonderful outpouring of support from my loving wife, family, friends and neighbors, doctors and nurses, clergy, co-workers and town employees, and a tremendous will to live are what helped me to be here to-

day celebrating my five-year survivorship milestone.” Riccio added that he received many daily phone calls from family, friends and town employees offering words of kindness, encouragement and support. There are many people who he wishes to thank, including his wife Joann, Dr. Guidone from Branford, Maryann Santoro, Dr. Thomas Fynan from the Oncology Group in Hamden, Police Chief Jim DiCarlo, Fire Chief Vincent Landisio, Dave Maiden, Eileen Pettit, Carla Pelliccio, Angela Belli-Infante, Frank Andersen, Rosemary Santello Riccio, and all his co-workers, Dr. Susan Fisher and Patty Brown at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, Priscilla Fusco and LuAnn Leclerc, two wonderful women who he works with at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, former selectman Kevin Kopetz, and many people from town. “Everyone was a great support system. I am grateful to all who stood by me,” stated a tearful Riccio. “In time of crisis, everyone needs a hand to hold onto, and I had countless hands to hold seven days a week.” Since his recovery, Riccio has become an advocate and fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and works very closely with Fusco and Leclerc on raising awareness and money for blood diseases. He is assisting them in sponsoring a benefit called Light the Night Walk-a-Thon for curing cancer that takes place on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven. Riccio is sponsoring a team called Dan’s Crusaders, of which he is the team captain in celebration of his five-year survivorship milestone. Light the Night is an annual evening walk that celebrates and commemorates lives touched by cancer. Survivors carry illuminated white balloons while supporters carry red. Gold balloons remember those who have lost their battle. Light the Night is a two- to three-mile noncompetitive walk that has no fitness requirements and is held in over 240 communities throughout the United States and Canada. It is an evening of family fun

Riccio has lived in North Haven for 48 years with his wife of 38 years, is a veteran of the Vietnam War era, and a program coordinator for the department of Community Services and Recreation. He is also active in church functions at St. Barnabas Church, Commander of American Legion Post 76 in North Haven, a graduate of the University of New Haven, a Past Grand Knight of Counsel 3733 in North Haven, a Past Faithful Navigator of the Patrick Donlen Assembly at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, and a former employee in the manufacturing industry for 35 years. “I love to help people and to be involved in my community,” stated Riccio. “A busy mind is a healthy mind and what better way to help others than through volunteering.” “My advice to all cancer patients is to keep the faith, and in the words of the late basketball coach from North Carolina State, Jim Valvano, ‘Don’t give up, don’t ever give up,’” replied Riccio. “Life is precious and we must live each day to the fullest while being good to one another.” For more information on the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Light the

Teens host jewlery-making workshop at Senior Center By Paul Colella Special to The North Haven Citizen
In a bright sunlit room at the Joyce C. Budrow Senior Center, a group of women enjoy learning the art of jewelry-making under the creative and careful instruction of three young North Haven residents and students— Amanda Jung and Jordyn and Eryn Sheeley. The girls
are not only jewelry makers and collectors, but also cousins who are hosting a jewelry workshop at the senior center on Monday and Thursday afternoons during July and August. “I became very interested in jewelry making when I entered middle school,” said Jung, a freshman at Sacred Heart Academy, “so I attended classes at an extended day program at the middle
school under the instruction of my teacher, Mrs. Blauvelt. Since I learned so much and had a great time, I wanted to share my talents with others.” Amanda explained that she taught her two cousins Jordyn and Eryn how to make jewelry items like bracelets, necklaces and earrings. During the past two summers, the girls have been teaching a jewelry making

class to the seniors twice a week. The program has been well-received and everyone is having a wonderful time. “I feel happy when I see the seniors smiling as they are making beautiful jewelry,” replied Eryn, a third grader at Clintonville School. “We let the seniors make what they want by letting them be creative.” The class currently has about 12 members. The participants have made bracelets, earrings, necklaces and chokers, but necklaces seem to be the most popular. The class is an intergenerational program that brings different ages together to learn new skills and spend quality time together. “When I see everyone making jewelry, I have flashbacks to the time when my grandmother and I made jewelry together,” said Jordyn, a seventh grader at the North Haven Middle School. “My grandmother takes us to Michael’s and Joanne Fabrics to buy the supplies. I like giving back to others because it makes me feel good.” Jordyn added that the girls buy what the seniors want or request, and then they choose alternatives as well. When they are shopping, they look for the bargains and popular colors of beads used for the necklaces and bracelets. If someone doesn’t finish what she is working on, she can resume during the next class. The materials are purchased with a weekly, $5 contribution from the participants. Response has been warm. “These girls are very talented and they make us do what we like,” stated Marcia Maresca, a senior and jewelry maker. “The girls are very creative and patient with us especially when it comes to looping the endings together that is the most challenging and difficult part to do.” “They are very helpful,
sweet, kind, and attentive young girls and also good teachers because they know their jewelry and how to make it,” said Jane DePaola, another senior and participant. “I love jewelry and enjoy coming to this program.” All participants agreed that Amanda, Jordyn, and Eryn are patient, kind and talented, and they certainly know how to guide them in making beautiful jewelry pieces. They also enjoy spending time with the girls listening to their stories about school and their extra curricular activities that include going to the movies and shopping, visiting the library, helping out at home, playing softball and participating in cheerleading and spending time with their friends. In turn, the girls enjoy listening to the seniors talk about current events and stories about when they were growing up. “This has been a wonderful experience because my cousins and I are learning from the seniors as they learn from us,” added Amanda. “We enjoy listening to their stories while we work and the time goes by so fast.” The jewelry making class, under the instruction of Amanda, Jordyn, and Eryn is a two way street of caring, learning, sharing, and having fun while spending time during the summer in a productive manner with many happy faces and fond memories. “I look forward to coming every week and having the chance to be creative with excellent guidance in the company of three lovely girls,” said Amelia Kennedy, another senior participant. “We pass the time making pretty jewelry while talking, laughing, and establishing friendships that are a real joy.” For more information on programs available at the senior center, please call 203239-5432.

Samantha Dorsi sings Star Spangled Banner
Samantha Dorsi, 8, of North Haven, sang the Star Spangled Banner at the New Britain Rock Cats game on July 8. It all began when she sang the Star Spangled Banner a capella at the Green Acres PTA Talent Show on April. People were amazed with her outstanding vocal ability. With the support of her school principal, Mrs. Linda Cahill, and many staff members at Green Acres Elementary School, Samantha sang the Star Spangled Banner for the opening of the Flag Day ceremony on June 14. Her troop leader, Maria Dellucia, suggested that she send a copy of her video to the New Britain Rock Cats. She was contacted by the New Britain Rock Cats with the opportunity to sing at their noon game on July 8. Her love for music and singing started when she was a toddler. She is very excited to begin voice lessons and hopes to continue doing something that she loves. Her parents are extremely proud of her and are very supportive of her and her many talents.
