NORTHERN STAGE FORMERLY NEWCASTLE PLAYHOUSE AUTUMN 12

look what we’ve rustled up this autumn Welcome to Autumn at Northern Stage. I’m thrilled by our packed programme of new and classic theatre, dance, storytelling and comedy, and I hope you will be too. We have invited a raft of remarkable and acclaimed theatre makers to bring their work to Newcastle this season; from Matthew Dunster’s elegant re-imagining of the classic THE Sacred Flame, to Wayne McGregor’s astonishing FAR and Mike Bartlett’s daring, contemporary Medea, we offer you theatrical experiences to put a tingle down your spine. There’s plenty for families this season too as we are proud partners in the Juice festival in October and then we’re making two brand new shows for Christmas. I am very excited to be directing The Borrowers this year, a splendid, uplifting tale of triumph over adversity. Autumn at Northern Stage promises to be a season full of wonder, joy and powerful stories. I hope you’ll join us for what I assure you will be a very warm welcome.

The Blue Boy

Medea

By Margaret Wilkinson Produced by New Writing North

By Euripides A new version written and directed by Mike Bartlett Headlong Theatre

In an office late at night Reagan discovers that the past can indeed come back to haunt you, even if you’ve shredded the evidence. When a boy arrives in the small hours, it’s not clear if his business is refuge or revenge. In this tense contemporary thriller, is anyone who they seem?

Her husband’s gone and her future isn’t bright. Imprisoned in her marital home, Medea can’t work, can’t sleep, and increasingly, can’t cope. This startlingly modern version of Euripides’ classic tragedy explores the private fury bubbling under public behaviour and how a mother, fuelled by anger at her husband’s infidelity, might be driven to commit the worst possible crime.
