Welcome to the 30th season of Northern Sky Theater. It is a year for celebrations. Fifty years ago The Heritage Ensemble started presenting performances at the amphitheater in Peninsula State Park. This group led the way to the establishment of American Folklore Theater that later became Northern Sky. Last year, we completed and opened our beautiful Creative Center, providing space for play development and housing the gorgeous Gould Theater for our indoor shows.

Another reason we celebrate is in gratitude to Mary Seeberg. She served the Board of Directors as Chairperson for 23 years. Thank you, Mary! Your wisdom, experience and guidance have directed us to our current successes. If you are a long-time supporter or just now learning about Northern Sky for the first time, you will enjoy and be inspired by our current offerings. The artistic staff has—again!—placed the theater on the cutting edge of creativity that advances our mission in amazing ways. Our online presence is fun, uplifting and so satisfying. It connects us with joy until place and time can bring us together again. Tune in. We long to see you! Yours in music and laughter, Cyndy Stiehl

Catch The Jeff & Katie Show, Live from the Gould Theater. The show “airs” via Facebook and Instagram on Sundays at 4PM CDT and includes special guests. Future live offerings may include small cast readings or content that could be done from the Gould Theater without an audience. Since mid-March we’ve been posting daily videos online featuring company artists sharing at-home moments and Northern Sky songs. Watch our Northern Sky at Home series via Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and our website. We premiered the Northern SkyLights feature at our gala event with a special video entitled A Decade of Delight. The video was a compilation of musical numbers from shows performed in Peninsula State Park from 2011 to 2019. As an ongoing feature, we plan to draw on more material from our archives, present readings of works in development, and assemble concerts with the help of our teams of writers.

NORTHERN SKY GOES VIRTUAL: CANCEL, PIVOT, ZOOM! Jeff Herbst, Artistic Director

For years (I guess sixteen, officially), I was a non-Facebooker. In full disclosure, I had set up a “dummy” account under the AFT banner a number of years back in order to get some video submissions from actors. But that was it. Of course, I had heard of both the virtues and drawbacks of social media sites. I’ve gotten plenty of secondhand accounts of famous and infamous tweets. I know that one can, if invited to do so, take over an Instagram account. I got wind that my mother was sharing Snapchats with her grandchildren. I would poke around on the Northern Sky Facebook page from time to time, mostly if someone said it might behoove me to do so. But mostly I was an observer and not an active participant. No objections, per se, but just wasn’t part of my ongoing life’s habit, either at work or home. And then March, 2020, and the coronavirus hit, the spinning world did an about-face, and we were all suddenly faced with multiple new realities: working from home (if you still had a job), navigating the online virtual world, attempting to foresee, impossibly, what might lie ahead. On March 12, we issued our first statement about COVID-19. The path from there to now has been precipitous and mostly navigated by collective brainstorming from remote, separate locations. We all learned to Zoom, through trial and error, figuring out various ways to view one another, mute ourselves, share our screens, and get in a public or private chat with fellow participants. We quickly started to talk about what steps we needed to take based on what the 6

current guidelines were (oh, that seems like ancient history already) in determining what to do about our very ambitious ten-show season. We had sponsors and playbill advertisers lined up, dozens of seasonal employees to accommodate with housing and travel, hundreds of volunteers to manage. We had to quickly figure out how we would continue to communicate with our loyal family of fans, volunteers and donors to keep them updated as things developed.

It was not long before we knew that we’d have to make some tough decisions. Barely three weeks into what became a nearly US-wide, stay-at-home order, we knew that our ability to safely gather as a company for rehearsals starting in May would be impossible. With that understanding, we also knew, by domino effect, that we’d have a tough time opening for an audience by mid-June, even if things were to miraculously return to ‘all systems go.’ So we devised multiple scenarios where we could delay the openings, gather on such and such a date, etc. We had spreadsheets galore in service of trying to figure out if any particular scheme would be feasible, logistically and financially. In the end, of course, we, like every theater company in the world, had to cancel our summer and fall seasons. At first it was

the cancelation of the park season and then the indoor portion of the summer season and finally the fall season. Even before we made the official decision to cancel the outdoor season, we started talking about “pivoting.” Up until the new Zoom world became my working-from-home norm, I knew pivoting as a verb primarily used as a basketball term. I had played the sport in middle and high school and been to enough summer camps to understand how fundamental the pivot move on the court was, especially for a 6’4” power forward. “Pivot, Herbst. Protect the ball, find the opening, get in position for a good shot,” blasted the voice of Coach fill-in-the-blank. And really that’s what we’ve been doing at Northern Sky. “Pivot, Feldman. Plan the virtual event.” “Pivot, Rhode. Edit a gazillion videos to be posted online.” “Pivot, Birnschein. Post them!”

The first pivot we made was to immediately establish an ongoing, upbeat presence online, mostly through Facebook, but also through email and YouTube to our vast mailing list. Molly Rhode, the afore-mentioned editor of videos, and Chase Stoeger were already providing video content for Northern Sky historically and for the current season. They were responsible, for instance, for the “Mancheski Minute that was posted in ongoing installments throughout the capital campaign. They had, thank goodness, enough working knowledge of the medium that we were able to start immediately using it and get something going that would establish an ongoing presence. We were clear from the get-go that we wanted whatever we did to be uniquely Northern Sky. So the Northern Sky at Home series was started. Company members were invited and encouraged to record themselves at home, to share an at-home experience or a song from our vast canon of works. Daily offerings were posted, with Chase, Molly and Ann Birnschein leading the charge on getting the content in shape and where it needed to be. We then pivoted mightily to figuring out how to get our annual fundraiser, Raise the Curtain (RTC), shifted from an

in-person, Memorial Day weekend event, to be held at the Gould, to a virtual event. The truth is, we talked a lot about if this would be possible, when it should optimally be held, and, most importantly, what it would consist of and look like. By now, nearly everyone has gotten used to creating and digesting Facebook LIVE concerts, or Zoom events, or YouTube extravaganzas. It’s truly remarkable how quickly everyone has adapted. But when we first started talking about a virtual event, we might as well have been speaking gibberish. But fellow company members and colleagues were already diving into this new pool of potential. We quickly solicited whatever help we could get: Laurie Flanigan-Hegge with an event under her belt at History Theater, Michael Wright coming off of a Chamber Theater

gala event, and Dave Hudson working in IT and steering us through the online technicalities. Once we determined that we would take the plunge, we decided to go for it and scheduled the event to be held on Memorial Day weekend. We would celebrate Northern Sky with Raise the Curtain Wherever You Are. Eventually, after multiple committees were formed, ad hoc members added to address certain issues, and, again, more spreadsheets (thanks, Eva Nimmer) than should be humanly possible formulated, we settled on an event that would span the entire day with multiple lead-up activities throughout the preceding two weeks. It was a monumental task, spearheaded by Molly as the de facto director and administered exactingly by Holly and Ann with a very heavy lift assist by Katie Dahl and Chase Stoeger. The event was to include an auction, which was par for the course for RTC, but we also decided to shift the

focus of the auction to an artist-centered event. We ended up offering a myriad of experiences: bedtime stories read by Northern Sky company members, a favorite song sung by one of them, a virtual concert presented via Zoom, and on and on. That auction, by the way, was, of course, also an online event. We used GiveSmart, which worked beautifully. Normally GiveSmart recommends a set-up, acclimation period of six weeks to get everything in order before launching the auction. Holly and Ann had six days! Molly and Chase solicited promos from the artists to attach to their items to make everything as appealing as possible. The auction itself was a Herculean task to organize and pull off. But that was just the beginning. Molly had it in mind that the entire day could be filled with content that would lead up to our main attraction.

Historically at RTC, after our social gathering cocktail hour spent looking at and bidding on auction items, followed by a sit-down dinner, we would have an hour’s worth of live entertainment provided by the company that was currently in rehearsal. Through a maze of detailed coordination, we shifted to creating a special video offering of archived material for our main attraction. We dubbed it Northern SkyLights: A Decade of Delight. The video was a compilation of musical numbers from shows performed in Peninsula State Park from 2011 to 2019. The footage was all professionally shot by Bill Youmans, in association with Door County Digital Production Services and John Nelson, to be used each season for marketing purposes. Twelve shows and eleven writing teams were featured in the 50-minute video,

compiled by Bill. Along with this main attraction, we also offered our alternative to a sit-down meal by providing a Door County Box from Door County Delivered, a new venture started by Nic and Christiana Trapani, both from the Northern Sky family. The box was full of specialty items that we trusted would make our RTC participants feel like they were experiencing a piece of Door County, wherever they were. We even included a little sachet of wood chips from the park. Before the big event, scheduled for 7:00 pm, the day was full of postings starting at 9:00 am. They included multiple interviews, fan letters read by company members, auction promos, and live updates broadcast from the Gould by Katie Dahl and me. We even had a delightful red carpet virtual event hosted by the inimitable Doug Clemons and Lachrisa Grandberry. It was wickedly fun. We

didn’t know what to set as a goal for this fundraising event. But as the enthusiasm began to grow, Holly (ever fearless) suggested that we shoot for $81K, representing 50 years of performances in the park, 30 years as Northern Sky, and one year of being in our new creative center. It was, frankly, a pretty lofty goal. In the end, when the tally was taken, the day was a smashing success, and we far exceeded our goal by raising $110K. Unbelievable, really, but it’s a testament to the extraordinary outpouring of support from our loyal audience members and the sheer tenacity of our company in undertaking such a feat. Kudos to all! Oh, and the upshot, as we’ve had to cancel, pivot and Zoom, is that I’m now on Facebook, perhaps for the ages. It comes in handy, for sure, with all of this “virtuality.” On that front, I am, truth be told, really enjoying doing The Jeff & Katie Show every Sunday LIVE at 4:00 pm CDT. Check it out, comment,

THE UNEXPECTED SIDE EFFECTS OF NORTHERN SKY AT HOME Molly Rhode, Associate Artistic Director

Chase, Silvia, and I started staying home mid-March in our Milwaukee condo. My last day of “normal” was actually spent in Door County at Northern Sky’s new Creative Center. I spent the day with Gibraltar students for an event called Exposure to Creativity on March 12th. It was a great day. A joyful day. I was excited about our coming season and inspired by the students and the opportunity to include their voices in a new work called SkyWriting. But in the hour before the bus came to collect the students, Governor Evers cancelled all gathering of over 250 people. And, of course, we were all suddenly on a rapid road to a drastic adjustment. Five days later, we recorded The Possum Trot and released it on Northern Sky’s Facebook page as the first installment of Northern Sky at Home. Things changed so quickly in March, didn’t they? All of us humans were scrambling to keep up with information that seemed to change hourly. It was stressful and strange, and the only antidote to all the weirdness that week was to share the lamest Hudson/ Libman composition ever to grace our stage. The Possum Trot is a 2 chord song that plays over and over again as a returning gag in Naked Radio. It’s a good bit. It’s funny every time. And to Paul Libman’s delight and horror, the CD single sold out over and over again while we ran the show in 2017. In the ‘Beforetimes’ known as February, Chase and I dug our Naked Radio binders out of our basement storage in anticipation of remounting the show this fall. Those binders were staring us in the face when we began quarantine, NorthernSkyTheater.com

and all the new-found time at home seemed like a great opportunity to start relearning the show. Possom Trot is the first tune in Act 1. We were in stitches when we cracked the binders open and sang it to each other. It was the first big belly laugh we’d had since The Great Family Campout of 2020 began. It seemed like a good reason to reach out to our Northern Sky family and get something going. We recorded a version of The Possom Trot with our daughter Silvia, and we issued a challenge for any Northern Sky goofballs that needed a brainbreak. “What kinda Trot have you got?” We included the words and chords in the post and within a few days we had over a dozen varied attempts at the ditty. Word even reached the owner of a restaurant named The Possom Trot in southern Illinois. She reached

out to ask permission to share our Facebook post. I checked in on that with Dave and Paul, and it turned out that Dave Hudson had eaten at that very restaurant many years prior. That experience had, in fact, inspired the song. Small world, right? In any case, we had a great time connecting with our fellow artists over social media on something silly and joyful. It was a helpful respite to the constantly changing news of the day. The opportunity to connect was a balm. And so Northern Sky at Home began then in earnest. I contacted all of the authors and composers that have been produced on our stages and requested permission for our artists to sing their songs and post the performances online. Within a day they all replied with a unanimous “Yes!” I shared that good news with our artists, and folks began making and sharing music. Artists old and new contributed, often with music but sometimes just sharing what they were up to at home. We had such a strong collection of material created so quickly, we began sharing many of the videos in a weekly round-up via email for our patrons that weren’t on social media. It’s been an interesting experience, performing in this way during the pandemic. We all felt so isolated sometimes. But sharing a song with you that was recorded in my bedroom or living room, allowing you into the sometimes chaotic mess of our condo, was a more intimate way to perform than I had ever experienced. In some ways it’s much more vulnerable than the safety of the stage and audience separation we’re accustomed to. I couldn’t hide behind a character. It was just me, singing from my kitchen. Super strange. And yet super lovely. Because artists all over the world were welcoming me into their homes too. NorthernSkyTheater.com

Because we’ve been forced to be apart, Northern Sky has had an unprecedented level of engagement with our patrons. Your comments and your emails encouraging this series have been so heartening and healing. And the success of that, in turn, has given us the confidence to explore a whole array of offerings to create a virtual season. When you visit Northern Sky we pride ourselves on being able to bring joy to your day and to your life. We are applying the same principle from afar. Please stay

JINGLE FUN Dave Hudson, Writer & Lyricist

When we were putting together Naked Radio, it occurred to me that I just happened to be working with Paul Libman, my longtime collaborator who also happens to be a veteran of the advertising industry. He’s written music for hundreds of commercials, including jingles like “Two Scoops of Raisins” and “Hamburger Helper,” and Brown’s Chicken “It Tastes Better.” It seemed a shame not to utilize that amazing talent when we were going to be doing a show where people would be singing on the radio. As the show evolved, we rolled in the idea of local businesses asking for the singing DJs to create ads for them. For a time, we thought about featuring Door County businesses in the jingles, but we recognized a couple of challenges there. First, if the show was done in future seasons, we might be on the hook for writing new jingles and actually having to change the book of the show to accommodate new jingles. As a musical bookwriter, trust me when I say that such a thing is far more complicated than it sounds. Beyond that, we also hope that this show will be done elsewhere and we really didn’t want to get into the business of creating jingles for every production. So, we created fictional businesses in our fictional town and had a lot of fun letting Molly Rhode play the owner of one of NorthernSkyTheater.com

them, ‘Barb’, a curmudgeonly owner of Gibson’s Plumbing. We were really thrilled with how it turned out. Fun Fact: Paul contributed a lot to the jingles. Because of his wealth of experience, I would send him the rough outline of a jingle lyric and he would come back with something that he’d truly reshaped into a great, and often hilarious jingle. When we were done, I asked that they add on ‘additional jinglefication by Paul Libman’ in the credits. And so, that brings us to this year, and Northern Sky has put out a call to teams to create jingles for our main sponsors. A bunch of teams are now working on jingles or ads for the different businesses and I love that.

JINGLE FUN (continued from page 29)

I do have to add one caveat, though. This isn’t a new thing. Doc Heide and Lee Becker did some amazingly fun jingles for some sponsors a few years back in their special shows they put together. I also remember listening to a cassette tape of one of the Northern Sky (then AFT) shows from the late 1990’s where there was an ad. I believe it was for Main Street Market. This is the first time we’ve done something on this scale, though. I’m very excited to know that Naked Radio served as an inspiration for getting music from so many writers out there in conjunction with our amazing Door County business sponsors. A-woooo! We are so grateful to Wulf Brothers, Inc one of our awesome show sponsors who also share their sponsorship with the Door County Maritime Museum. Check out this jingle, written and performed by Northern Sky author Dave Hudson. NorthernSkyTheater.com

RISING TO THE OCCASION Holly Feldman, Director of Development & Public Relations

Have you heard this new term: Coronacoaster? Well, the term made me laugh the other day because I thought it was a great analogy for the ups and downs of the pandemic - not to mention the unexpected curves, spirals and occasionally wanting to scream and throw your hands in the air… though not out of exhilaration. It is with this in mind that I felt it was important to share something that wouldn’t have caught your attention while we were all a little busy just holding on tight to the coaster: Back in March of this year, Northern Sky received an anonymous gift that allowed us to reach our $8.1M Constellation Campaign goal. Amazing, right? And yet, frankly, it felt awkward to celebrate this good news broadly amidst all the turmoil. That, and as things started to look even more challenging with regard to our season and ticket revenue, we struggled with how to make such an announcement while we were headed full speed into a time when it was clear we would need the support of our patrons more than ever to stay on the track. But lo and behold, as demonstrated by the huge success of both our Promise Pass campaign and our virtual Raise the Curtain event, Northern Sky fans always find a way to rise to the occasion. Your generosity never ceases to amaze us. Reaching our Constellation Campaign is a major factor, perhaps THE major factor, in ensuring our future. Folks like you made that happen. As you page through the subsequent campaign section I hope you marvel at all of the things you made possible and at all the names of the folks who joined you. You will always be part of the legacy of Northern Sky. We simply can’t wait to welcome you back to the Gould Theater NorthernSkyTheater.com

RISING TO THE OCCASION (continued from page 33)

after the success of our fall run and to show off our brand-new restrooms in the park! I’m not above giving you a tour just to watch those babies flush. All of that said, there are still things to check off the list. Things at the park, like a new merchandise booth and concession stand, are still, to use a theater term, waiting in the wings. While we wish we could get a jump on them this season, with no operating revenue to supplement some of this work, we cannot yet complete our amphitheater upgrades. It’s that simple. Rest assured though, we’ll be behind the scenes putting our creative brains to the task and we’ll always keep you in the loop. And of course, although we’ve reached that ambitious goal, we are still accepting support for these projects. There is still a brick or seat or place on our creative center donor wall ready for your name. Those of you who have met me know that being the director of development at Northern Sky is so much more than a career. It is my passion. My main qualification for this position is that

I grew up sitting on those benches in the park alongside all of you. My arts management degree was a distant second. I’ve said it more times than I can count, but this place holds my favorite childhood memories. The success of our campaign paired with the careful planning for an ambitious season was supposed to find us coasting down one of those big hills screaming, “Weeeeee!” Instead, we find that we’ve still got some coaster to climb. And that’s ok. Because there’s no one I’d rather be on this ride with than all of you. In the meantime, if you find yourself in the area and you’d like a tour of the Gould Theater, just reach out to our box office or to me personally and we’ll get you on the schedule.

Because of you... A short time back, Northern Sky launched the

Constellation Campaign to ensure our future. Because of folks like you, our creative center, on the corner of A & F, featuring our new indoor space, The Gould Theater, is now complete. In fact, we celebrated the opening of the new theater last fall with the world premiere Dad’s Season Tickets playing to sold out audiences on more nights than we can count and we were so looking forward to welcoming you back there this summer. We were also looking forward to welcoming you to the park with perhaps one of the most exciting pieces of this project: New restrooms! With, get this, flush toilets! The great news? The restrooms are nearly complete and will be waiting for us just as soon as we can be together again.

And while our plans for our celebrating so many anniversaries in our 2020 season, including 50 years in partnership with the park, 30 years as a professional company and our first season in our new home, needed to be put on hold, we can’t help but marvel at the list of names on the following pages. And so, at this moment, we simply want to say,

“Thanks.”

Thank YOU for holding this place dear to your heart. Thank YOU for believing in our future. YOU are the reason we know we will get through this and we’ll all be there for each other when all of this is behind us. Your faith in us has never wavered and we never take that faith for granted.

If you are still feeling inspired to support our ongoing building projects, we have even more great news: We are still accepting gifts for the Constellation Campaign! In fact, you can still be part of this legacy with your name on a brick paver or a seat at the Gould Theater or a bench in the park. Check the end of this section for details.

Please make your gift today.

A TRIBUTE TO MARY SEEBERG Board of Directors Chairperson 1997 to 2020

Mary Seeberg joined Northern Sky’s board (then AFT) in 1997 as its first chair. She retired from that position this past March of 2020. That statement alone is a testament to her dedication to an organization that has undergone tremendous growth and change during her long tenure. But far beyond this mere fact of longevity is the scope of Mary’s service and dedication. She was not only the chair of the board, but an avid fan, ardent volunteer, fiduciary overseer, and good friend to many of us who have been on this ride with her.

No matter the circumstances over the course of the past twenty-three years, Mary’s leadership has been steadfast. She weathered the storm of the loss of one of Northern Sky’s seminal members, Fred Alley, the person responsible for recruiting her to be on the board. This coincided closely to Mary’s having finished her first term as chair. She knew, as much as any of us, that a more fervent, determined commitment to the organization would be needed at that time more than ever. And she made that commitment and led with her usual calm but assertive authority. A few years later, when we began talking about our need for a home, she wasn’t reluctant to explore how a still relatively young company could undergo a major capital campaign. And, to her and the board’s credit, they advised

that we should continue our work and mission and allow the organization to mature some before embarking on a project that would need a full panoply of support systems in place in order to be successful. And then, when the idea of changing the name from American Folklore Theatre to something more fitting to the original work we had been creating for twenty-five years was proposed, Mary, like many who had invested so much in AFT, wanted to be sure we had thought through the implications carefully. Being accountable to Mary and the board she was leading has been a big part of the reason that Northern Sky has been so successful. There has always been rigor in that equation, but also ultimate trust that has allowed for a fruitful collaboration between the board and

management. Truly, the culture at Northern Sky has been one of family, teamwork, unity—name your metaphor. And that has been largely to Mary’s credit in always setting the appropriate tone. The crowning achievement of Mary’s tenure has been the success of our Constellation Campaign to raise the capital to build our Creative Center, housing the Gould Theater, and make much needed improvements to our amphitheater home in Peninsula State Park. Yes, we did eventually mature to the position of having earned the trust of the community at large and the good will of our loyal patrons and donors to embark on such a campaign. The result from the first announcement in 2015 of our intention to build this home until its completion in the summer of 2019 has

been astonishing in how quickly the capital was raised and the building completed. And throughout, Mary, serving on the building committee, applied her usual rigor and good cheer. In short order, over $8 million was raised and an architectural award-winning complex built, giving Northern Sky a home, and further contributing to Mary’s wonderful legacy as a leader. As the building took shape and donors were taking advantage of naming opportunities, we knew that somehow, we needed to be sure that Mary’s name had a lasting place, appropriate to her service, in the building. In 2018, I had the pleasure of surprising Mary, on site with dozens of fellow celebrants, with the following: “Back in late June, Holly Feldman floated an idea past

Dave Maier and me that we both immediately signed onto, although with our own caveat. The idea was to name the boardroom of our new creative center for someone in particular. This particular person was unquestionably deserving. Her service to the organization unparalleled; her enthusiasm for the mission unmatched; her volunteerism measuring now in the decades. But the caveat for this particular person was our certain understanding that she would not be okay, at all, with naming this room after her if it meant we’d lose the potential of securing a large donation from another donor who would like to have the honor. So without beating around the bush anymore, I am honored to be the person given the most pleasurable task of revealing to our dear Mary Seeberg that the boardroom Your partner in Renewable Energy!

at the Northern Sky Creative Center will be named in her honor and has been supported with a substantial donation. The group of people here today are part of a cadre who were determined to realize this most fitting tribute. Holly beautifully and swiftly over the past two weeks called on Mary’s board colleagues, friends, and family to join in making this possible. In that short period of time, $125,000 has been generously donated by the people who understand the significance of Mary’s contribution to Northern Sky Theater and the unequivocal appropriateness of this particular feature of the campus bearing her name. The Mary Seeberg Boardroom will forever be a reminder of the tremendous service Mary has given to Northern Sky these past twenty-one years as the leader of the board in seeing us through the best and most trying times to finally arrive at a place that she has had a huge hand in making

TAKING CARE OF THE NORTHERN SKY FAMILY Dave Maier, Managing Director

In January, my Managing Director report to the Board began, “Everything is already in fast motion as we prepare for this very ambitious season just around the corner. Can you believe that we start selling tickets to our ten-show season in just five weeks?” Then came the pandemic and the great unraveling. In mid-March we released our first COVID-19 statement and, step-by-step, our world gradually shut down. Just yesterday, July 9, Northern Sky announced the cancellation of our entire 2020 summer and fall seasons. Even more sobering was that we were in sync and in sad company with our fellow theatre colleagues and companies around the county and country. Not just theater companies, but virtually every large-gathering venue or attraction in the country – concerts, arenas, stadiums, festivals, water parks, and special events - all closed or cancelled for the foreseeable future. The Wisconsin DNR announced the closure of in-park concessionaires and attractions. The actor and stage manager’s union announced they would not issue

contracts until the pandemic was under control. It became clear early on the we were looking at a late summer season start, at best. With that in mind, we immediately launched the Northern Sky at Home series to keep our fans engaged and connected with us. We wanted to be ahead of the curve with our audience outreach while our finance committee continued to scramble and deliberate, planning and budgeting under ever changing circumstances and guidance. Over the past few months Northern Sky has worked to develop new streams of revenue in an effort to counter the impact of the pandemic on 2020 programming and ticket sales. With the decision to cancel our 2020 summer and fall seasons, we’re now totally focused on implementing a vital and uplifting virtual online presence. In short order, our quick-thinking and clever staff facilitated the Promise Pass campaign and our reimagined virtual kick-off fundraiser, Raise the Curtain Wherever You Are! Thanks to you, these efforts were wildly successful and eye-opening. And because of that success, Jeff and Molly are able to make every effort to engage our authors across the country, however possible, to continue developing new works. As difficult as this is and will be, it’s important to consider the opportunity that every adversity offers. We’re also discovering how aspects of these novel events and programs can continue to serve us down the road. For example, over 300 households were able to engage with our Raise the Curtain event from all over the country. That’s more than double the folks we could fit into any of our indoor NorthernSkyTheater.com

event spaces. Our “No-Season” mission is to come out of this crisis stronger than ever. The Board has been diligently shoring-up our cash flow liquidity to sustain the company through a no-season 2020. We’re taking many of the same steps as businesses all over the state and country. In April, Northern Sky received an SBA PPP loan and we recently applied for an SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan. We also increased our working lineof-credit and drew on other funds to strengthen our liquidity “war chest.” Additional budget tightening and clarifications have enabled us to fine-tune budget models that project and prepare us for any worst-case scenario all the way through to summer 2021, and beyond. As always, planning must prioritize ensuring long-term sustainability,

maintaining mission (both from a programming and an internal humanistic perspective - protecting our people, protecting our brand), and maintaining agreed upon cashflow and budget management strategies. In the meantime, we will creatively stay in contact with our patrons and continue to develop new virtual fundraising and program initiatives. Jeff and Molly’s articles are brimming with news of exciting works-in-progress. The current focus of our amazing A (for Admin)-Team is to support, market and roll-out the impressive and growing schedule of new works, fundraising, social media and solidarity messaging and events that Jeff and Molly continue to orchestrate. The box office has been keeping our Promise Pass holders updated and coordinating virtual programming registration.

Remembering Gerald Pelrine In January Northern Sky Theater suffered a significant loss. Gerald Pelrine, one of our two co-founders, passed away of a heart attack at age 64. I met Gerald in 1982 at bucolic Wildwood Studios near Spring Green during rehearsals for the Heritage Ensemble, our predecessor troupe. In the olden days, there were Ensembles in several state parks who sometimes rehearsed together. That year Gerald was in the Governor Dodge State Park cast. I recall wishing we’d gotten him at the Peninsula Park company instead. Gerald’s humor, creativity, and musical abilities were immediately obvious. With his ever-present mustache, erudition, and dashing over-the-top style, he seemed the living embodiment of the 19th century characters we typically portrayed. By the next year Gerald had joined us at Peninsula. If you came to an Ensemble performance most of the years after that, you would have seen Gerald. And you definitely would have heard him. We in the performing world sometimes refer to our speaking voice as our instrument. Gerald’s was like a trumpet leading the Union Army’s charge at Fredericksburg. “Gold, gold from the American River!” he proclaimed in Badger Forty-Niners, our show about Wisconsinites seeking their fortunes in California’s gold fields. It was electrifying. Gerald’s penetrating voice woke a part of the soul you’d forgotten you had. You felt like loading your mining gear into a Prairie schooner and riding West by sundown. Always eager to upgrade our performances, Gerald taught himself guitar and electric bass. His snare drum skills were literally center-stage during our Civil War show, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory. And on almost any fast song, he’d grab a tambourine or cabasa to add percussive texture. Gerald was hilarious both onstage and off, and would do anything for a laugh. He once said his principal forms of artistic expression were “muttering and sarcasm”. He literally prostrated himself to portray a Civil War soldier berated by an officer for not throwing worm-infested hardtack biscuits out of the trenches. “Yes,

74

Northern Sky Theater

Written by Fred ‘Doc’ Heide sir, we’ve thrown the hardtack out of the trenches 10 times already, sir,” he groveled. “But it keeps crawling back!” Gerald is perhaps best remembered for his role as Wisconsin-raised naturalist John Muir in 1989’s The Mountains Call My Name. The show generated our first review in the Gerald Pelrine Milwaukee Journal, led to a Wisconsin Public Television special, and kept Gerald busy for years doing a oneman version at special events. His emotional recounting of Muir’s classic dog story Stickeen is preserved on the tribute CD for the John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, CA. When Ensemble founder Dave Peterson retired in 1990, he gave the theater to Gerald and me. We launched American Folklore Theater (AFT), while Fred Alley (who we’d invited to join us) chose to stay in California where he’d recently moved. Gerald and I cast the summer season, booked a tour, and wrote a musical together that was made into another Wisconsin PBS special (Mule for Breakfast Again, about Wisconsin humorist George Peck’s Civil War adventures). That season included Alice Peacock and Georgia Middleman, both of who went on to stellar careers as singer-songwriters. Like many actors, Gerald held other jobs including barber, stockbroker, and certified nursing assistant. Many will remember his colorful stints as a professional server at the Landmark Resort, Viking Grill, Log Den, and English Inn. His charismatic personality and quick wit would bring a smile to your face as he delivered your fish fry. Although Gerald left AFT (later renamed Northern Sky Theater) shortly after we co-founded it, his impact should not be underestimated. Theaters such as ours don’t spring fully formed from the head of Zeus; they result from years of conversation, close collaboration, and sacrifice. Without his dedication and camaraderie, it’s quite possible we wouldn’t have a theater now. He is deeply missed by those of us fortunate enough to have known and loved him.

OUT OF THE WOODS Doc Heide, Artistic Advisor & Co-Founder

It’s that time again when we ask members of our Northern Sky community what they did in the off-season. JIMMY KAPLAN is now in his eighth year working in the finance department at Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Lumberjacks in Love, the musical he wrote with Fred Alley, made its Canadian debut this past winter at the Chemainus Theatre Festival in British Columbia. Before Twin Cities stages went dark, JON HEGGE was at the Guthrie as Harry the Horse in Guys and Dolls and Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol. LAURIE FLANIGANHEGGE is now Artistic Associate at History Theatre. They were both in rehearsal for The Diary of Anne Frank at Park Square Theatre when COVID hit, but the production reached almost half a million people when the cast moved the production to Zoom and went around the world. Laurie’s critically acclaimed musical Sweetland will be streamed this fall at historytheatre.com. DOUG CLEMONS has been doing cabarets and concerts in Milwaukee everywhere from nightclubs to churches. He was also in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Temple Beth Israel Ner Tamid) and Gilbert & Sillivan’s Ruddigore (Skylight Music Theatre). MOLLY RHODE directed Newsies at Skylight. CHASE STOEGER was in the cast and played 6 characters with 12 costume changes including 3 hats, 1 wig, and 2 mustaches. Molly also choreographed The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors at First Stage with rock star direction by KELLY DOHERTY. CORRIE BEULAH KOVACS choreographed Mamma Mia at Preble High School in Green Bay. She and STEVE KOVACS again adjudicated for the Center Stage High School Theater Program. Corrie also sang with Project Pink, a Pink Floyd NorthernSkyTheater.com

tribute band. After another year of teaching at University of Iowa BILL THEISEN wrote, “I think we all learned a great deal about virtual classes. It’s been great to spend time helping out a number of arts organizations, including Northern Sky, as they keep connected with their patrons and create innovative ways to build momentum during this challenging time.” ALEX CAMPEA tells us he “has spent his time in quarantine adding songs to his repertoire, renewing his tap-dancing skills, and perfecting his zombie apocalypse game plan.” After his summer season at Door Shakespeare, DAN KLARER performed in The Pajama Game in Munster, IN. Then he did a second production of Every Brilliant Thing in Rockford, IL and after two weeks of Guys On Ice in Madison, handed the reigns of Ernie to TIM MCNURLEN to perform in a new Jeeves & Wooster play at First Folio Theatre. describes his time as Ernie as “a highlight of my performing career.” PAUL LIBMAN is revising the score for No Bones About It (co-authored with DAVE HUDSON) for a new publishing edition. He’s also working with NYC collaborators on two new musicals and finishing up a commission to score the 2020 (now 2021) annual performances of the Chase Brock Experience, an acclaimed New York modern dance company. Meanwhile, DAVE has been busy creating The Show Must Go Online, a children’s virtual musical co-written with DENVER CASADO and Jessica Penzias. It has been licensed over 500 times since its release in April. Dave is also working on another virtual musical, Through the Screen. In January DEB FETT retired from teaching elementary music full time for 34 years. A pandemic highlight for her was singing in Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir 6 with 17,000 others from 129 countries around the world. Their final project of Sing Gently

will be released in a few months. CLAUDIA RUSSELL writes that her husband Bruce Kaplan’s father passed away, as well as their old dear kitty of 23 years, Mo. Claudia says, “I kept working on songwriting and took a wonderful seminar at Esalen, taught by Wisconsin songwriter Johnsmith. We also toured and played some truly wonderful venues, houses, and festivals in the Midwest, West and Northwest.” AMY CHAFFEE wrote a new comedy set at Christmas, 1968, about six pregnant professors’ wives, called Snowpants Don’t Lie. It will get its premiere world production in Wellington, NZ in August, 2021. She has been performing extended vocal work for the last couple years at the Centre Artistique du Roy Hart in the Cevennes National Forest in France and is the chief researcher and a guest host on a sociolinguistic podcast called, You Talk Funny. here at www.youtalkfunnypodcast.com/get-involved. In addition to working on Love Stings for Northern Sky with MATTHEW LEVINE, RICHARD CASTLE wrote a 15-minute online Zoom musical with Matt called Virtual Happy Hour. He’s also been preparing a cabaret show of his work, which he’s hoping to premiere live in Los Angeles once it is safe to do so. DENNIS JOHNSON has been providing bass parts online from his home studio for folks, including LACHRISA GRANDBERRY. (He and JOHN LEWIS did a backing track for her auction song Lovely Day.) Dennis also recorded a cut on Kurt Michaels’ soon-to-be-released CD, and one very fun track to Rob Parton’s video of Get It On. ERIC LEWIS says that after Home for the Holidays with KATIE DAHL and RICH HIGDON, he performed with Jason Petty doing Every Song Tells A Story in Sanford, NC, for three weeks in February.

Since then he’s been learning more about home recording, practicing, reading, and producing songs in the studio for other artists. And he’s finished mixing eight songs for a new CD of his own that he hopes to release this year. COLIN WELFORD says he “lost out on playing the organ at my niece’s wedding in England in September, because the airline went bankrupt four hours before my flight. I regained a connection with scores of old friends and colleagues when I arranged and produced the music for an epic celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Lion King in London’s West End, the production that I’d conducted back on Opening Night and that is still going strong. I gained from the sale of my hitherto virtually ‘unsellable’ apartment in New York in December, and then lost some pounds as I undertook

Finally, I benefitted from the discovery of a new musical outlet that has had me playing the great organ at the Ephraim Moravian Church each week as well as the piano at my next-door neighbor’s place: the Unitarian Universalist meeting house in Ephraim.” LEE BECKER slept on the floor of DOC HEIDE’s Berkeley apartment one last time as they wrote the seventh draft of their prequel to Belgians In Heaven, slated for a workshop soon. Lee has been holed up lately in Winston-Salem, NC, doing homeschooling for son Wilbur. In 2006 Northern Sky Theater established the Fred Alley New Musical Fund to honor the memory of Fred Alley, co-founder of the company and playwright of many of our most popular productions, including Guys on Ice and Lumberjacks in Love. Contributions to this fund are used exclusively for the creation and development of new musicals. Recent productions benefiting from the fund include We Like It Where?, Boxcar, Dairy Heirs, Doctor! Doctor!, No Bones About It, When Butter Churns to Gold, Strings Attached, Windjammers, Victory Farm, and Guys & Does. 2019-2020 Contributors were: Ann Abbott Helen Allen Judith Amberg Helen Ambuel Mary Anderson Sara Ellen & James H. Volunteers of Northern Sky Theater Do you love theatre? Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy sharing that experience with others? If your answers are “yes!” then we have the perfect opportunity for you! Northern Sky offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience – ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, as well as assisting with special events. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone. If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to help and a desire to be part of something original in Door County. Please call the Northern Sky office at (920) 854-6117 or e-mail volunteer@northernskytheater.com. We proudly present our 2019 volunteers...
