Lead, support, inspire, educate, and have fun! District Deputy Grand Master’s Message Di

A

s one year closes another begins and like a new chapter in our history we have our work cut out for us as we continue the momentum built by our predecessors. It is at this point we should pause a moment and take the time to acknowledge R. W. Bro. Angus and congratulate him on a job well done and his efforts, dedication and commitment to the craft and our principles is a fine example and one that should be emulated. In my travels throughout the district I have noticed that we have many pockets of excellence as each one of us has a strength that we bring to our lodge, weather it be our enjoyment of doing ritual, organizing social events or preparing papers, we encourage each of you to step forward and be active. A theme and common misconception from my point of view is that we refer to it as the Masters year and his alone to make it successful, it is only the Masters year to have the privilege of leading the lodge, it is always the lodges’ year and together you can be successful as a team.

How do we hope to achieve this goal? With the assistance and support of our Past, Present and future members, with this balance we can all Lead, Support, Inspire, Educate and have fun while we collectively contribute to and celebrate our successes. As some of you may be aware we are doing something a little different this year with our District meeting and I would encourage you all to participate as we will be having our District Meeting on Saturday, October 27 in Onoway at the Onoway High school, there will be a ladies program and banquet in the evening. We hope this will afford the opportunity to Onoway lodge for some positive public relations in the community and create some interest in the craft. I want to thank you for the privileged and honour of being your District Deputy Grand Master and I look forward to serving our district. Sincerely, R.W. Bro. Ken Glazebrook

Masonic Higher Education Bursary Fund continues to help dozens of youth

R.W. Bro. Ken Glazebrook presents Bursary Certificate to Nicole Denis with mother in attendance. Also pictured, R.W. Bro. Jack McBride and R.W. Bro. Chris Batty To Whomever It May Concern, My name is Nicole Denis and I am honoured that I have been chosen to receive one out of onehundred Masonic Higher Education Bursaries. I plan to attend NAIT and complete my Human Resources Diploma and with your help I will follow through on my plan. I was worried that school would not be an option for me with my family’s financial problems, but the Masons have made my goal one step closer; for everything counts. The Masons have made it clear to me that anything is possible, for I was not an A+ student in school and for that I was worried any scholarship or bursary would not even take the time of day to look me over. Ken Glazebrook made me feel important knowing that everything I’ve done for my community meant something more than my grades ever did.

Ken also encouraged me to do more and become more with my schooling. I am planning to apply for this Bursary next year because I know everyone gets a chance; not only a first one but a second one as well. I am proud of myself knowing I can tell people I will be attending post-secondary and I will be forever grateful knowing the Masonic Bursary helped me. After I complete my schooling I hope to become an employee at Suncor, and once I do. I plan on letting the world know that the only reason I made it where I desired was all thanks to the Masons. Once again thank-you for your support and I encourage anyone who is in need of financial support to apply for the Masonic Higher Education Bursary because they do make a difference.

Nicole Denis

Missing Children Society gets support from Masonic Foundation By: District Rep. R.W. Bro. Angus Stewart

A

ll of us who have children have probably experienced a twinge of panic when on checking the backyard where a child was playing a few moments earlier, discover that they have vanished. Where did they go? Did the child wander off alone? Are they across the road or did they go down the street to play with a friend. If we don’t find the child after searching for several minutes our worst fear would be, was the child abducted?

Angus Stewart presents a cheque to Alix Williams of the Missing Children Society of Canada The Masonic Foundation of Alberta was formed in principle as a result of resolutions passed at the 1989 and 1990Grand Lodge of Alberta Communications. Previous to that date a Grand Master’s committee was struck to begin the process of establishing a Masonic Charitable Foundation in Alberta. It was from the roots of that committee that, in 1991, was brought about the formal organization and structure of the Foundation. While the Foundation has a number of objectives the two basic goals are:  To encourage, stimulate and assist financially, various Lodges that have identified particular Charitable projects. It is the hope of the foundation that it can match financially the funds raised by the local Lodge for a specific registered charity.  To identify worthy charitable projects that can be funded directly by the Foundation. These projects, which are focused upon helping young people, can either be long term or short term. The Masonic Foundation of Alberta is a Registered Charity: 88740 3996 RR0001 Our Mailing Address is: PO Box 77069 Station Main St. Albert, AB T8N 6C1 www.masonicfoundationofalberta.ca

Alix Williams, Sr. Development Officers for the Missing Children Society of Canada, was our guest speaker in May. The Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) was created in 1986 in order to actively search for missing children assisting law enforcement, and provide support for searching families. When a child goes missing, about 1 hour is spent searching by the family before contacting the police. The police will search for 2 -4 hours before calling an Amber Alert; 6 to 8 hours may have gone by before the community is notified, and by this time a child could be across the border in a neighbouring province or even in Montana. Time is critical. More than 50,000 children go missing in Canada every year. About 35,000 kids are found within 7 days, especially teens. Around 20% of the cases in Canada are in Alberta with 50% to 60% being parental abductions. About 20% are runaways, and 2% to 5% of the kids are abducted by strangers. The MCSC never stop searching. In one case a daughter was found after 18 years when she was 22 years old. The MCSC, being non-profit, does get assistance from one of the airlines to transport investigators in cross-border abductions, and they also receive aid from pro-bono lawyers. Further information on this very worthy organization and information on geo-targeted apps for an iPhone or Blackberry can be found on their website at www.mcsc.ca .

Your candidates for District Deputy Grand Master for 2013-2014 V. W. Bro. Kenn Culbertson Kenn is a third generation Mason, as his Grandfather and Father both were members of West Edmonton #101. Calder community in Edmonton was the place he spent his school years. Kenn graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School in 1970. Early in 1971 he began his career at Canadian National Railways as a Yardman, which again followed in his fathers footsteps. In 1974 CNR offered a Locomotive Engineer training course at Gimili Manitoba. Kenn successfully completed the course and practical training. In May of 1974 he became a qualified Locomotive Engineer. This position he held for 32 years at Canadian National. In 2006 there was an opportunity to transfer to VIA Rail Canada which led to a short 2 year career as a Passenger Locomotive Engineer. In 2008 Kenn retired from serious railroading and took a part time job as a conductor at Fort Edmonton Park on the heritage Edmonton Yukon and Pacific Railway. Kenn was initiated in Evergreen Lodge # 166 in June of 2005, passed September 2005 and raised in October 2005 and served as Worshipful Master in 2010. In November 2011, he affiliated with Baseline Lodge # 198. Kenn is also a 32 Degree A.A.S.R Mason. For Northern Lights District, Kenn has been Masonic Higher Education Bursary Representative in 2009 -2010 and District Secretary 2011-2012. In June 2011, Kenn was appointed Senior Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge of Alberta serving under the direction of Most Worshipful Brother Peter Dunlop. Also in June of 2011 Kenn was successful in being elected to the Board of General Purpose for a term of 3 years. Thereafter he was appointed to the Finance Committee for the Grand Lodge of Alberta.

During Kenn's career owing to the irregular hours of a Locomotive Engineer there was little time for true commitments other than family. As he neared retirement there was a need to fill a void that was coming. Masonry has more than done just that by the fellowship and visitation that are cornerstones to our fraternity. Kenn is married to Phyllis and their family includes four children and four wonderful grandchildren. Outside of Freemasonry Kenn enjoys, railroad train modelling, golf, curling, travelling and volunteering.

“The Secret Psychology of Freemasonry— Alchemy, Gnosis, and the Science of the Craft” by Cliff Porter Book Review by W. Bro. Michael Bayrak, District Education Coordinator

W

hile Freemasonry is rich in philosophy and has had hundreds of books published on that topic, in the last decade, we are now seeing a renaissance of Masonic scholars delving into the psychological aspects of how our ritual and symbolism exposes the mysteries of our inner being. This book is one of those scholarly works—containing some of the deepest insights I have ever read on explaining and showing a brother Mason the Jungian archetypal psychology of the various aspects of his character. Bro. Cliff Porter, with his professional background in criminal investigations and interviewing, opens up in how he reads and deals with people by noticing the human sensing words they choose to communicate with and then equates these words with our dominating personality types. For example, some of us say, “I saw him speak” rather than “I heard him speak”. This is revealing. But even more telling is how these types are placed in each quarter of our self-awareness as presented in our Masonic ritual, and how symbolism like the circle and square map out our character. The book is also rife with alchemical and Latin translations, carefully digging at the root of the intended meanings. Early on in the book, the subject focus waivered a bit for me, but as I read on, Cliff asked for patience, and then everything tied together in an inspirational finale exposing what he believes to be, the secret essence of the Craft. From this book, you can tell that Brother Porter is passionate about Masonry, and knowing that he is a driving force behind rejuvenating the Craft in the Colorado area and beyond, this book speaks to you like his Great Work—a true labour of love, enjoyable and deeply selfeducational. I rate this book four Blazing Stars out of five.  Brother Porter is the featured author at the 2013 Masonic Spring Workshop in Kananaskis, Paster Master of Enlightenment Lodge 198 in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he works as a homicide detective for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. Brother Porter is also recognized nationally for his work in teaching and presenting on the areas of Subconscious Communications as it relates to personal interactions and communications.

Tri-Jurisdictional Lodge Brethren gathering in Moose Jaw September 28th – 30th, 2012 The Grand Lodge Jurisdictions of Alberta, Montana, & Saskatchewan, September 28 & 29, 2012, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. Welcome to this our third annual Outdoor Roaming Lodge and the first in Saskatchewan. We have good reason to be together – to share aspects of our beloved fraternity with Brethren from another jurisdiction and to enjoy the fellowship and goodwill that follows when “good men and true” get together. You don’t want to miss out on this event so go to the following link for more information: http://www.saskmasons.ca Your Host, Bro Carl Krause, Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan

If You Are, You Will My Brother Be If you believe in A Great Architect, And only if;

If your job, its satisfaction done, And life’s a plateau, Life its stillness bore:

If you ask questions That gives no answers; Why, what or who am I:

If you are a man Good and true And live God’s chosen paths;

If you have loved And all the joys of love, Mellowed to its highest heights;

If you ask, Is life a tireless search With no end?

If you weep at a man’s woes And his pain is your pain; His anguish needs

If life’s eternal lesson learned And have been rewarded With God’s gifts of joy and blessings;

Then, time is right, My good fellow, You are

You carefully soothe: If the moons no more Your ambition keep Or at least the direction know; If the hard and stony path Is but behind And not ahead of you;

If you have the heart and soul, And the precious hours To share this joy with other fellowmen: If within you, lies a heart That stirs for more, And you know not why;

And you will, my brother be. -Lalkumar
