The Government’s recently announced Housing Strategy for England – Laying the Foundations – has allocated £150m to help bring empty homes back into use. But tackling empty homes can be a complex issue. This free half day workshop has been designed to provide practical support and guidance around planning and implementing effective empty homes strategies. The session will cover: The Government’s latest plans to tackle empty homes What makes empty homes strategies effective Best practice examples Using the New Homes Bonus Local authorities’ enforcement role Wider opportunities such as social enterprises and skills and training initiatives Business opportunities that encourage providers to invest? Engaging with private landlords?

Who should attend? Anyone involved in assessing, managing or delivering empty homes strategies and services will benefit from attending this event.

Case study 1 Newcastle City Council’s approach to empty homes Vivienne Air, Head of Environment and Public Protection, Newcastle CC In this session Vivenne will focus on: Blockages and barriers faced when trying to tackle empty properties What Newcastle has done to resolve those blockages and barriers Enforcement and incentives Measuring impact How they might add further value to their approach to tackling empty properties during 2012/15

Case study 2 – Coast and Country Housing’s approach to empty homes Lesley Conroy, Head of Tenants Services (Neighbourhoods) Coast and Country Housing In this session Lesley will focus on: Coast and Country’s business approach to developing their empty homes programme – what new opportunities are there to encourage housing providers to invest How did they deploy resources and what were the business and community outcomes How they involved social enterprises in the delivery of the strategy What has been the impact and what happens next
