With the abolition of the Audit Commission and the Tenant Services Authority (TSA) growing ever closer, this is an ideal opportunity for housing organisations to learn more about the provisions of the Equality Act 2010 (due to come into force from 1 April 2011) and to feed back directly to The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on challenges they have experienced in implementing the provisions that came into force last October. This one day workshop will be chaired by Clifton Robinson Chief Executive of the Housing Diversity Network, and facilitated by Neil Martin, the EHRC’s Regional Adviser for Yorkshire. Benefits of attending: Learn about the steps you should be taking now to ensure that your organisation is prepared for the Public Sector Equality Duty requirements, due to come into effect in April 2011. Respond to the EHRC about issues that have generated problems for your organisation in implementation. Discover how best to ensure that decisions involving spending cuts are as fair as possible in terms of their equalities impact. Learn how the EHRC’s Guidance and Codes of Practice can assist housing organisations to implement the Equality Act requirements. Human Right Guidance to the housing sector in the light of the Weaver case…hear the latest developments.

Who should attend? The workshop is aimed at Senior Housing Sector Managers with overall responsibility for strategic policy implementation, and those specifically responsible for the Equality & Diversity agenda within their organisation.

Equality Act 2010 – overview, highlights and lowlights! A short overview of the Equality Act 2010: which provisions took effect from October 2010; which provisions have been dropped, and which are still under consideration by the Government? This will look at the framework of protection against direct and indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation in services and public functions; premises and work.

Public sector equality duties An overview of the new Public Sector Equality Duties coming into force in April 2011. What do they mean for social housing providers?

Regulation of Social Housing The Government’s review of social housing regulation confirmed the end of regulation of the sector as we have known it. Delegates will have an opportunity to discuss the implications of this as far as their individual organisations are concerned. We will briefly remind ourselves of the main features of the review and then break into small groups to look at a number of issues such as: How will less formal regulation impact on the profile of Equality and Diversity within your organisation? What inspection alternatives are organisations putting in place post TSA and Audit Commission? For example, peer review? Investors in Diversity? HDN kite mark? Social Housing Equality Framework?

Spending cuts – making fair decisions In a climate where financial cutbacks are inevitable, what steps can you take to ensure that the impact of your decisions does not fall unfairly on the most disadvantaged of your customers?

Guidance and support from the Commission This session will outline the different sources of help and guidance from the Commission and other organisations to enable you to successfully implement the provisions the Equality Act 2010. This will include the Commission’s Codes of Practice and Non-Statutory Guidance.
