You need no forehand experiences to participate – but if you are experienced we can offer challenging trails for you too. In the tops of the pine trees we have 55 different games, zip lines and activities where you use balance, climbing and creativity to get from one platform to another. The grand finale is the 207-meter long speedy zipline. The six different trails are marked with difficulty levels to ensure that everyone will have fun at their own pace.

GLØD Explorer Jun 01 - Oct 01 Your expert and enthusiastic guides at GLØD Explorer will provide you with a bike and helmet, choose a route to match your fitness level, and then together you’re off to explore the area. Midway through the bike tour, you’ll stop and make an open fire on the banks of the Alta River to brew coffee/ tea and have a snack. Then it’s back on the trail, and finally back to GLØD HQ for an enjoyable lunch - GLØD’s famous Moose Burger.

Tour ends between 14:00 and 15:00

GLØD Explorer Jun 01 - Oct 01 If you are comfortable heading out into the nearby arctic wilderness on your own, then come into Alta and rent a mountain bike. The high quality full-suspension bikes from Trek are easy to ride and great performers along whatever rugged terrain you decide to tackle. GLØD Explorer rents an array of different sizes as well, and there are even smaller cycles available if you have a whole family that wants to head out for adventure.

Gargia Fjellstue Jun 20 - Oct 20 The tour begins at Gargia Lodge. The trail leads us through the oldest forest in this area, and on your way up to the waterfall we will pass nesting places for owls and falcons. This area is also home to Mr. Moose, foxes and rabbits - keep an eye out and you might be able to find their calling cards. After a 2 km hike you will enjoy the view of the Orvvos waterfall. We continue above the waterfall where we will find a nice view over Gargia Lodge and the valley of Gargia. Before returning back we will take a break around the bonfire and enjoy a snack and something to drink.

Gargia Fjellstue Jun 20 - Oct 20 This is a full day guided tracking tour with pack dogs, vast plains and great views. The tour starts just above the tree line on Bæskades mountain plateau. The trail is easy going and follows the gentle waves of the landscape. Two small rivers have to be crossed before we approach the edge of the spectacular Sautso Canyon. From the viewing point you have a spectacular view over the canyon and Alta River. Over a hundred meters below you, you can hear the roaring of Gabofossen/Gabo-rapids. We take a rest around the bonfire and enjoy some hot beverages and lunch. After lunch and a short break we head back across the plateau in our old tracks. On our way back we take our time to study the wildlife and sometimes we can see small herds of reindeers grazing in this area during the summer. Keep an eye out for a ”gabba” reindeer, which is an all-white color. www.visitalta.no - info@visitalta.no

The first third of the 9km trail winds through birch forests, and as we get higher the view over the Altafjord gets better. Once we reach 300 meters over sea level we pass the tree line, and we will see Haldde Mountain ahead, rising 907 meters above sea level. The last part up to the summit is the steepest one as we zig zag our way up the mountain. During the hike we will take short breaks to refill with energy and water. It is a demanding walk, but on the summit if weather conditions are good you will be rewarded with a great view over the Altafjord and surroundings. On the summit we take a break, enjoy our lunch and hot beverage before returning back to Alta and Gargia.

AI146: Hike up Mt. Haldde to the Northern Lights Observatory With a Husky (904 m above sea level!)

GLØD Explorer Jun 01 - Oct 01 GLØD Explorer takes you along on a hiking tour to a magnificent panorama of northern Europe’s largest canyon, Alta Canyon. You will walk right up to the edge and take in the majestic view, well aware that it’s a hundred meter drop to the river floor below you. The walking distance for this tour is 13 kilometers round trip, so plan for about 4 hours of walking. The trail is good and clear, but we still recommend that you wear good, half-height mountain boots. You will be making your way across a couple of streams along the way - they can definitely be crossed, but the amount of water in them will depend on the season and recent rainfall. Some days, you can hop from rock to rock; other times, you might enjoy the experience of wading through mountain-fresh water!

GLØD Explorer Jun 01 - Oct 01 Hike with GLØD Explorer up to the top of Mt. Haldde, home of the historic Northern Lights Observatory built in 1899. The length of this tour is around 18 kilometers round-trip, with a rise in elevation of almost 1000 meters. We will follow the well-marked and well-established trail to the top, and expect that the total walking time will be around 5 hours. Even though this is a relatively long tour, there are local school-age children who regularly make the climb. It is strenuous but not impossible! Bring good mountain-hiking boots, and a pack with extra clothes - you may very well find temperatures at the top to be a lot colder than you expect, and a warm sweater, hat, gloves and long pants will be a welcome change.

GLØD Explorer Jun 15 - Oct 15 Take two days in the breathtaking Alta Canyon and wind your way back down towards Alta. Sautso, as the canyon is called locally, is Northern Europe’s largest and is full of wildlife and stunning views, yet its remote location has left it relatively undiscovered by travelers. This tour will take you not just TO Sautso, but INTO Sautso, giving you a rare opportunity to see this area right from the middle of it. AI142: Explore the Wild Fjords and the Glacier with Boat

Ice Cube of Aurora Apr 15 - Sep 15 Come join us for an evening cruise out on the dramatic and breathtaking Alta Fjord. You’ll cruise out along the sparkling water under a huge sky, surrounded by low mountains dotted with tiny towns and occasional houses, and Alta off in the distance. As evening descends, the setting sun will light the sky on fire - arctic sunsets are things of majesty. Is it June or July? Then you get the midnight sun casting vibrant colors on the surrounding mountains. A cloudy night? Look for the setting sun to shine dramatic beams down through the clouds onto the gray and challenging water. Along the way, there will be food and drink, and as you cruise and wait for the setting sun, you can take refuge from the wind and play fun games with the other guests, or hear stories from the captain about the local area. You will return to shore around midnight, either in the full daylight of midsummer or the gloom of the outer months.

NORD Ekspedisjon May 01 - Sep 29 The Øksfjordjøkul glacier is the only glacier on mainland Europe that calves down into the sea. It is located just between the counties of Troms and Finnmark, and is surrounded by beautiful and wild fjords and high mountains. Here, the snow is on the mountain peaks almost all year round. This is truly a great place for those who want to connect to nature. We leave Alta and Alta Fjord, passing several historic landmarks on the route. Our local guide will tell you about the history of Alta from the earliest settlements, Alta`s favorable position under the Northern Lights belt and the local history up until today. When we arrive at our destination in Jøkelfjord we will take a boat trip out to the glacier to take exciting pictures close by the majestic icefall that reaches 800 meters above sea-level. The glacier is very active and can calve, where ice breaks off the front and crashes onto a lower ice shelf before falling into the fjord, leaving the sound of thunder behind. After the boat trip we will return to the harbor where we will have lunch and hot drinks before heading back home to Alta.

Trasti & Trine Jan 01 - Dec 31 Hytta, our cosy cabin, is the heart of our homestead and is located right next the dog yard. This is a nice place to stay for young and old alike. It’s usually full of activity here during the daytime, but in the calm of the evening the silence is only broken by the rustle from the wind in the pine forest or the occasional howl from the dog yard. The cabin contains one single room, one twin room and two double rooms. We offer a homemade organic breakfast in the neighbouring house from 8.30am to 10am.

HeliTours Jan 01 - Dec 31 If you are in Alta you won`t want to miss out on a trip to Sautso, northern Europe’s largest canyon. This majestic canyon is situated along the Alta River, and is a truly beautiful sight from above. Bring your camera and capture your adventure forever. The tour starts from Alta airport. We lift off and head towards the Alta River, a world-famous river known for its huge salmon. Sport fishers come here from all over the world to fish - even royalty! We follow the river’s course for 40 km to the point where the beauty of the Alta Canyon reveals itself. The canyon is about 400 meters deep and 7.5 km long, and holds the title as the Northern Europe`s largest canyon. At the end of the canyon we reach the power station and dam, the site of big environmental and political protests in the 1980s and the place where the Alta and Kautokeino rivers connect. We then turn back and fly over Tverrelvdalen, a beautiful river valley at the foot of a slate mountain, and finally back to Alta airport.

HeliTours Jan 01 - Dec 31 Combine historic monuments and spectacular nature, mix with a helicopter’s unique perspective, and you’ve got the recipe for a tour that could be the highlight of your holiday. On this trip we put two popular destinations together: the Northern Lights Observatory on Mt. Haldde, and Sautso, northern Europe’s largest canyon. The tour starts from Alta airport. We lift off and fly towards the Haldde peak. At 900 meters over sea level, we will discover the Northern Lights Observatory. The first building was constructed in 1899 as a base to study weather and the northern lights, and Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland stayed there during the first winter season. In 1912, construction began on more buildings, and the base became the world’s first permanent northern lights observatory. From there, we turn towards towards the Alta River, a world-famous river known for its huge salmon. Sport fishers come here from all over the world to fish - even royalty! HeliTours Jan 01 - Dec 31 Come discover the vast, wild arctic land of Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost county from the bird’s-eye view of a helicopter. Have your camera ready as you travel from Alta to North Cape and back - this tour will give you nonstop photo opportunities! The tour begins at Alta airport, where we take off and set a course to the famous “northernmost point in Europe” - North Cape! Watch the natural world change below you from Alta’s lush river valleys and tree-studded hills to the harsh and untamed plateau. If you are lucky you might even see a reindeer or two along the way. We will cruise over tiny villages and the rugged coastline, and the farther north we go, the more barren the landscape will become. The trees and scrubby bushes will give way to rocks and windswept outcroppings, until finally at the north coast there will only be the Barents Sea stretching as far as the eye can see. We will land at North Cape, and you will have an hour to explore the cape and visit the Center there before returning to Alta. Wild, beautiful arctic nature at its best, from overhead and up close – it’s a rare experience of a lifetime!

Alta Event Jan 01 - Dec 31 This tour gives you a taste of arctic life at a slower pace. Come out to our camp just outside of Alta. Join us around an outdoor fire, where coffee and grilled-on-the-fire trail food is waiting. Sit and enjoy the arctic air, no matter what the season or the weather. Try your hand at casting a lasso or axe throwing - make it a friendly competition or just play for fun. In the winter, build a snowman! This is a part of everyday life for us here in Alta – gathering with friends or family, either out at a nearby cabin or right in our own backyards, just enjoying the natural world around us. Take a break from your busy holiday schedule and be one of us!

Tirpitz Museum Jun 15 - Sep 01 Alta was deeply affected by World War 2 – first occupied by thousands of soldiers and finally burned down near the end of the war. One of the famous icons of the war in this region is the battleship Tirpitz that was anchored in Kåfjord, just a short distance outside of Alta. The Tirpitz Museum, located very near the location of Tirpitz’s anchorage, is dedicated to displaying artifacts related to Tirpitz and the war. Founded by local resident Even Blomqvist, the museum is home to a fascinating array of objects and photographs from the War and the Tirpitz that help bring the subject into focus. There is also a film that can be viewed that talks about the mini-submarine attack against the Tirpitz. Whether you had relatives that served on the Tirpitz or the Allied attackers, or if you simply have a particular interest in the subject, the Tirpitz Museum is an essential place to visit!

NORD Ekspedisjon Jan 01 - Dec 31 You will be picked up from our Explorer Store, and led out of the city up to Alten Lodge. We have one of the greatest views in Alta, with both fjords and mountains. The host will take you in to a warm lavvo, where you will get warm traditional reindeer soup and exciting storytelling about Altas history. Sitting around the fireplace, you will feel the silence of the north.

Sorrisniva Jun 01 - Aug 15 Head out to Sorrisniva and enjoy a delightful lunch in the Laksestua Restaurant. Chef Lasse doesn’t have to travel far to find the local raw materials he needs for his seasonal menus: potatoes, herbs and greens from local farms; smoked salmon and other fish from the rivers just beyond the restaurant; reindeer, moose, lamb and pork from the wilderness and local butchers; and fresh bread and pastries from the restaurant’s own bakery.

Laksens Hus Jan 01 - Dec 31 Stop in at the Salmon Center and get the story of how the valuable wild salmon in the region became the basis for a new industry and a quality product that is in demand around the world. Why and how, you ask? The answers are waiting for you at the Salmon Center. Knowledge provides a good foundation for dialogue and discussion. The center offers practical information and fun activities related to various topics on salmon farming. We show you the challenges we are working to solve along with opportunities we see for the future.

Laksens Hus Jan 01 - Dec 31 If you are looking for a chance to learn more about salmon farming in the region, why not combine new insight with an exciting trip to a salmon farm! Our express boat Taifun accommodates 12 passengers, and provides a comfortable trip out to our farm at Mortensnes. The ride from Alta’s harbor to Mortensnes takes you along a beautiful coastal landscape - the scenery is just exceptional. And when you arrive at the farm, you will learn a great deal about salmon farming, a modern and sustainable industry, and how it is put into practice here in Alta.

You will walk along an outdoor boardwalk to see some of the thousands of rock carvings in the area. The carvings, dating from between 6,000 and 2,000 years ago, show fascinating, fleeting glimpses into the lives of people who lived here after the end of the last ice age. At the end of the outdoor tour, you can choose to continue and see more recently-discovered carvings, or head back up to the Museum to look over the inside exhibits. Your guide can answer questions and tell you about the exhibits, or just let you wander and explore on your own. With time remaining, take a look through the museum’s wide selection of souvenirs from the local area, or sit with coffee (and maybe a fresh waffle!) and chat with the guide about life in Alta and Norway. The museum’s coffee shop has one of the best views of Alta Fjord, so it’s the perfect place to have a relaxing conversation.

Then it’s over the beautiful and architecturally interesting Kåfjord bridge to the Tirpitz Museum. The museum features artifacts from the area and from Tirpitz itself, and brings a startling clarity to the participants on both sides of the conflict. Once done at the museum, you’ll stop outside Kåfjord Church (the only other building in the area to survive the war’s destruction), and then head up the coast for a walk along the edge of the fjord to find the ruins of a bunker amid the delightful arctic scenery. Then it’s back to Alta and modern times again.

North Adventure May 01 - Oct 30 You will be picked up by a guide/driver in a private car, and driven out to Sautso, the biggest canyon in Northern Europe. The one-hour ride to the canyon will give the guide to talk with you about life in Alta and Norway, the history of the area, and details about the history and controversy of the dam and the Sami people in the area. You’ll have time to stop and take some pictures of the stunning canyon view, and then it’s off to the power station itself. Though the facility is currently generating power, all operations are controlled remotely, so you and your guide will very likely be the only people in the huge facility! You’ll descend through a tunnel to the visitor center inside the rock cliff, see a short film produced by the power company, and then head out to walk across the dam itself.

When you rent your motorhome with us, you will have a fantastic chance to experience Finnmark County’s many beautiful natural sights at whatever pace is right for you. We have tips and route plans that can get you to the region’s must-see destinations. This is a totally unique holiday: right in the middle of nature, in the ever-changing arctic light, with the possibility to be a part of a variety of activities in many different areas. One of our motorhomes would be the perfect way to follow along with the Offroad Finnmark and Arctic Race cycle events, for example! Just tell us what you need, and we’ll do everything we can to give you the holiday of your dreams in beautiful Finnmark.
