Our Impact: 2017
We’re here if you ever need us! An overview of who we are, what we do and how you can get involved
being there for all the family northdevonhospice.org.uk
Did you know… 1. We’re not just here for people with cancer We also support patients and their families from across North Devon facing other life limiting illnesses including motor neurone disease, heart and kidney failure and COPD. We also offer bereavement support for anyone who needs us, including children.
2. We look after the whole family including children When a patient with a life limiting illness uses any of our services, we not only look after them, but also support their wider family, friends and carers.
3. We are heavily reliant on a gift in a will We need to raise over £4.5 million every year in charitable income alone – and it’s not easy getting there. A quarter of this income is generated from the kindness of people leaving a gift for us in their will. We are grateful for anyone who is able to support us in this way – so that we can continue to be there for anyone who needs us across North Devon in the future.
4. The majority of people we look after receive our care at home Both our Hospice to Home and Clinical Nurse Specialist Teams travel 104,323 miles each year, covering the 800 square miles of North Devon every day, providing essential care to patients and their families who need specialist care at home. In the last year alone, we were able to make 9,559 visits to patient homes.
5. We are a local charity that only receives minimal funding from the NHS It costs £5.5 million in total to deliver our services each year. Only £1 million of this comes from the NHS – we rely on the generosity of our local community to support us with the other £4.5 million. Thank you on behalf of our patients and their families for any support you have or are able to give us in the future

Our priorities this year... 1. Enhance our partnership working with North Devon District Hospital and the out of hours GP service 2. Ensure that the community are aware of our financial reliance on receiving gifts in wills 3. In the face of a tough financial year, ensure that the community we care for understand the breadth of our care and support - and, equipped with this knowledge, choose to support North Devon Hospice as their local charity 4. Ensure that any patients and their families who need our care and support are able to get it. Particularly those patients suffering with a non-cancerous terminal illness
Marion tells us: When Marion was given no more than 18 months to live following a lung cancer diagnosis, life took a dramatic change, not only for her, but also for her husband, Stanley. The couple were then referred to North Devon Hospice’s Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team and are currently being looked after by one of our nurses Lin Walkey.
Lin has been absolutely marvellous. It’s made us feel a lot more confident with everything we’re going through right now. It feels great that Lin is on the end of the phone. She really cares and it’s taken so much of the stress away for us both. Lin is bubbly and has great charisma, you can ask her absolutely anything. It’s made us so much more confident in facing this illness.

Ella Mawson from Ilfracombe was just 16 when her mum, Claire, was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour. Ella was supported throughout her mum’s illness by Mandy from North Devon Hospice’s Supportive Care team.
The thing about Mandy is that she is just so wise. I’ve never met someone who always seemed to have the right answers and she was never judgemental. I could say things that I thought were shocking to me, but to her they were completely normal and that was really soothing. I’d go for counselling sessions with her and that was so useful because talking it through with my family was all a bit too close. I needed that outside perspective. For us, the hospice has been a constant throughout the whole process. Going through so much instability and uncertainty, knowing that we had this safe place where we could go was amazing.
