Original Pancake House The Original Pancake House is a third generation restaurant that originated in Portland, Oregon. Their signature breakfast dishes include The Dutch Baby, Mushroom Omelet with mushroom sherry sauce, and their Apple Pancakes. They’ve been the locals’ choice for the ultimate breakfast in San Diego ever since they opened their first franchise in San Diego in 1979. They are located in Encinitas, Vista, San Diego, Kearney Mesa, Poway and Temecula. Their world famous original recipes are inspired from all over the world, and incorporate the very finest ingredients, such as U.S.D.A AA grade butter, pure 36% whipping cream, fresh grade AA eggs, hard wheat unbleached flour, and their own homemade sourdough starter recipe. Their bat-

ters and sauces are made fresh daily in each restaurant’s kitchen; and their coffee is their own special blend. Try the Original Pancake House’s special thick sliced bacon and their amazing omelets. We highly recommend their gourmet cherry Kijafa crepes. If you’ve never tried The Original Pancake House, you’re long overdue; and if you’re already a regular, then you know what we’re talking about. Firenze Trattoria This fine Italian restaurant is celebrating their 27th anniversary this year. They are winners of the Diners Choice Award from Open Table and have won numerous awards over the years, including Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and Best Italian by Ranch and Coast. Their longevity speaks volumes about their cuisine and service. As owner/ restaurateur, Barry Podwell, explains, “We don’t have the luxury of having spectacular ocean views like so many restaurants along the coast, so our food has to be very good to keep us here all these years.” It’s true. Firenze Trattoria may not have the ocean, but it certainly does have spectacular food. Firenze Trattoria’s authentic Italian cuisine evokes the romance and flavors of Italy’s Tuscany coast. The menu includes an extensive lineup of local favorites, too many to list; but we especially recommend their signature Lasagne Firenze. Every Italian restaurant boasts about their lasagna,

but this one is truly special. It’s hard to see the layers of ricotta cheese, a mixture of beef, chicken, and sausage, fresh Roma tomato, mushroom, and parmesan atop marinara sauce, because it’s completely covered with a very light and creamy béchamel sauce. It’s absolutely delicious. Other recommended dishes include: Calamari Fritti Antipasti, with lightly battered, deep fried calamari served with piquant marinara sauce; Risotto Portofino, grilled jumbo shrimp served with artichoke hearts and asparagus, surrounding a center mound of risotto. From Filet Mignon al Casino to Butternut Squash Ravioli, you just can’t miss. Happy Hour is 4-6:30pm Mon-Sun with a popular discounted bar menu for food, wine, cocktails, and beer. Mondays offer 1/2 off bottles of wine. Jazz happens on the Patio on Sundays. Firenze Trattoria is located at 162 South Rancho Santa Fe Rd, Encinitas 92024. Call (760) 944-9000 or visit www.firenzetrattoria.com.

Champagne French Bakery Café Champagne has been serving a fusion of modern and traditional French cuisine since 1987 and has locations in Del Mar Highlands and Carmel Mountain. They have an assortment of coffees, teas, breads, pastries, cakes, tarts, cookies, sandwiches, salads and soups. They are famous for their pastries, including a variety of croissants, custard brioche, cinnamon roll, raisin scone (one of our favorites), and cranberry muffin. Desserts include such delights as: Napoleon, which is a crispy puffed pastry layered with vanilla cream and topped with fondant and chocolate; crème brulee; vanilla éclair; bread pudding; and chocolate dipped strawberries. They also serve cakes, tarts, and cookies. One of our favorites is their

raspberry cookie, which is two soft cookies sandwiched with raspberry preserves and half is dipped in dark chocolate. Try Champagne French Bakery Café for breakfast or lunch under an umbrella in front of the Rancho Santa Fe Plaza clock tower and fountain. Try their Create-Your-Own Omelet or Brioche French Toast. Both days are sure to be fun and exciting, especially the bar, so try to get there early to avoid waiting for a table. According to Zagat, “Tony’s Jacal is one of the most authentic north of the border Mexican restaurants.” Taste the flavors of old Mexico and enjoy the history of one of the first Mexican restaurants in San Diego. Tony’s Jacal (pronounced hakal) is one of San Diego’s oldest and most treasured Mexican restaurants. Located in Solana Beach, Tony’s Jacal is a historic San Diego landmark which opened its doors in 1946 as a small neighborhood house where neighbors would stop by for a delicious meal. Its reputation increased over the years because their cuisine is absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere and service are equally outstanding. For three

generations, Tony’s Jacal has been serving family specialties, like their famous chile relleno, turkey tacos, turkey enchiladas, flautas and shrimp burritos. We recommend their very special turkey tamales with a wonderful mole sauce made with black Pasilla Chiles, which you can order off the menu all-year-round. And, absolutely try Tony’s Fajita Burritos! Tony’s Jacal has a beautiful floral outdoor garden patio and live Mariachi music in the evenings. Their classic cantina lounge offers a wide selection of tequila and Margaritas, and serves a variety of mezcal. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 5-7pm. Ask for a delicious Margarita or a tasty Mezcal Paloma with grapefruit soda on the rocks. Lunch is served Mon-Sat 11am-2pm: Dinner is served Weekdays 5-9:30pm; Fri and Sat 5-10pm; Sun 3-9:30pm. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens Earth Day Festival

Beyond Van Gogh

April 23, 10am-3pm

In an imaginative and immersive presentation crafted for our unique times by world renowned audiovisual designers, Beyond Van Gogh uses projection technology to create an engaging journey into the world of Van Gogh. Using his dreams, his thoughts, and his words to drive the experience as a narrative, we move along projection swathed walls wrapped in light, colour, and shapes that swirl, dance and refocus into flowers, cafes and landscapes. Masterpieces, now freed from frames, come alive, appear and disappear, flow across multi-surfaces, the minutia of details titillating our heightened senses. Through his own words set to a symphonic score, we may come to a new appreciation of this tortured artist’s stunning work.

Alta Vista Botanical Gardens welcomes guests to connect with nature at the Earth Day Festival on April 23. Visitors can stroll through the gardens’ 14 acres, take in the beauty of nine Ricardo Breceda sculptures sprinkled throughout the grounds, and browse the crafts, snacks, and plants in the garden shop. From 10am to 3pm, there are activities for children, live musical performances by guitarist Vic Moraga, and plenty of vendors. The Grow Getters Plant Sale takes place during the festival and features succulents, natives, flowers, veggies, and rare plants, along with gardening advice. Vendors line the driveway of the garden with environmentally friendly information, as well as treats, jewelry, home décor, and home care solutions for sale. Children can learn how to compost, handle worms, make recycled art, and paint Earth Day rocks. A barbecue lunch and beverages are available for purchase from Amigos de Vista Lions. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens has become a gathering place for the community and is certified as both a Wildlife Habitat and a Butterfly Habitat. Garden art, sculptures, walkways, and walls created by some of the area’s most talented artisans decorate the gardens with a hint of whimsy. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens is located at 1270 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista. For more information, call (760) 822-6824 or visit www.altavistabotanicalgardens.org.

Cruisin’ Grand Escondido Fallbrook Avocado Festival April-September

April 24, 9am-5pm

Escondido’s Grand Avenue is the place to be on Friday nights through September, as the streets are taken over by a parade of pre-1970s automobiles for Cruisin’ Grand. All kinds of vintage autos — from American Hot Rods, Classics, Antiques, and Customs — span seven blocks of the city’s downtown area. In addition to classic cars, attendees can also enjoy all that downtown Escondido has to offer, including great restaurants, breweries and pubs, stores, boutiques, and live performance venues. It’s widely known that Cruisin’ Grand was Steve Waldron’s idea. Steve used to cruise Valley Parkway on Friday and Saturday nights in the ‘70s. He’d go to the T-Bird Diner and think what a shame it was that the hot rods were parked instead of cruising. He started to think that “Grand Avenue was an exceptional street to have a cruise on, a street with great ambience.” The City and Escondido Police Department quickly got on board and their support has been crucial to the success of Cruisin’ Grand. Cruisin’ Grand takes place on Grand Avenue, from Orange Street to Ivy Street, in downtown Escondido. For more information, visit www.cruisingrand.com.

At the Fallbrook Avocado Festival, visitors can celebrate Fallbook’s heritage as an agricultural community and pay tribute to the area’s extensive avocado groves. The festival returns to Main Street in downtown Fallbrook from 9am to 5pm on April 24. Family-friendly performances take place on the Community Stage, located at the intersection of Main and Alvarado Streets. This year’s scheduled entertain-

Escondido Street Festival May 22, 10am-6pm The Escondido Street Festival, formerly known as the Grand Avenue Festival, returns to downtown Escondido on May 22. Hosted by the Downtown Business Association (DBA), the family-friendly festival takes place on Grand Avenue, allowing easy access to Escondido’s downtown storefronts. On the street, there is live entertainment, arts and crafts, food from around the world, and several vendor booths. It runs from 10am to 6pm. This year’s event delivers live musical performances that

were planned for the canceled 2020 and 2021 festivals. As the DBA attempts to modernize the festival, some vendor fees are also offered at a lower rate for the 2022 event. For more information, visit www. escondido.org/escondido-street-faire.

Looking for a New Career? CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate In December 2015, Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program in May 2017 and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six weeks after earning his TESL/TEFL certificate, Havenor was heading AMERICAN LANGUAGE & CULTURE INSTITUTE N O R T H

to Dnipro, Ukraine, for a four-month teaching assignment. “I was thinking I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of contentment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.” Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language. The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on handson training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL, teacher train-

ing, and curriculum development. Participants receive ample opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation. The 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week, and the 6-week summer intensive course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week. Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her English-speaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a

friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After

an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

Skate Rising Youth Program Returns to Encinitas April 9 and May 14 Exposure Skate is once again offering girls ages 4 to 18 an opportunity to get outdoors, give back to their community, and learn how to skateboard. The non-profit’s youth program, Skate Rising, resumed in March, after an in-person pause during the COVID-19 pandemic. Events take place from 9am to 11am on the second Saturday of each month at Encinitas Community Park. The next events are scheduled for April 9 and May 14. Skate Rising combines the fun of a skating clinic with a monthly service project that addresses a different community need. Previous events have focused on issues such as bullying, homelessness, and domestic violence. The service project is followed by a learn-to-skate clinic, where lessons are provided by professional and Olympic skateboarders. Skaters of all ability levels are welcome. Founder Calli Kelsay was inspired to start the program in 2016, after watching her own daughters learn to skate. She began looking for ways to connect skateboarding to the community, and Skate Rising was born. Exposure Skate also offers skating clinics for adults.
