o m e to lc e w NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE Thank you for joining us for the North Central College Fine & Performing Arts 2021-2022 season! We couldn’t be more excited to be able to share these incredibly talented artists with you, live and in person. We are in a unique and challenging time, but it is a joy to share fine arts events together once more. We kicked off the season in November with Plain White T’s and Beckie Menzie and Tom Michael. Our Home for the Holidays series featured the Holiday Jazz Concert, Jim Brickman: The Gift of Christmas, and MICHAEL BOLTON, Greatest Hits & Holiday Favorites. January offered even more excitement with Chicago Sinfonietta’s “Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert: Joie de Vivre. In February, we welcome you for “My Funny Valentine” with Pat Hazell and Karen Morgan, TheaterWorksUSA’s “Dog Man: The Musical”, and Take 6. In March, we invite you to Marianne Murphy Orland’s “Rags to Rhinestones: The Musical Life of Dolly Parton”. We close out the season with TheaterWorksUSA’s “Rosie Revere,

Engineer & Friends”, Kurt Elling, Laura Freeman’s “Backstage Pass”, The Four C Notes, and—newly announced—The Wailers. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to our season sponsors and Friends of the Arts donors—thank you for your generous support this season. We would not be able to bring you these wonderful events and continue working toward future seasons without your generous contributions. And to you, our loyal audience: thank you for your continued support and patronage. We hope you enjoy a performance or two! Without further ado, on with the show! Sincerely,

Jennifer Berosek Coordinator of Fine Arts

“MY FUNNY VALENTINE” WITH PAT HAZELL & KAREN MORGAN February 12, 2022, Wentz Concert Hall

BIO GRAPH y Showtime declared Pat Hazell one of the five funniest people in America. His 30 years of experience as a writer, producer and director have made him a go-to guy for new American theater. Pat is one of the original writers for NBC’s “Seinfeld”, a veteran of “The Tonight Show”, a critically acclaimed playwright and a contributing commentator to National Public Radio. He is recognized for his genuinely funny Americana humor and his salute to nostalgia. As the chief creative officer of Sweetwood Creative, he is responsible for the national tours of six original productions: “Bunk Bed Brothers”, “The Wonder Bread Years”, “The Good Humor Men”, “My Funny Valentine”, “A Kodachrome Christmas” and “Pat Hazell’s Permanent Record”. However, his greatest accomplishment is being the father of two of the brightest shining stars in the universe, Tucker and Keaton. Karen Morgan was born in Georgia but now calls Maine home. A former trial attorney, she began her comedy career in 2005 as a finalist in Nick at Nite’s “Search for the Funniest Mom in America”. Since then, Karen has appeared in theatres and comedy clubs across the country including The Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, Caroline’s in New York City and Comedy Connection in Boston. Her radio clips can be heard on Sirius XM Radio. In 2012, she won the Improv Comedy Club’s national comic search in Las Vegas and was also featured on the USA Network in an ad for Walmart. Her book “You Might Be a Mama” was published by Peter Randall Publishing in 2005. For more information on Karen, please visit karencomedy.com

THEATERWORKSUSA’S

“DOG MAN: THE MUSICAL” February 19, 2022, Pfeiffer Hall

Bio graph y Based on the bestselling “Dog Man” book series by Dav Pilkey, “Dog Man: The Musical” has a book and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila (two-time Emmy Award-winning writer of the PBS show “Peg + Cat”), and music by Brad Alexander (Drama Desk-nominated “See Rock City & Other Destinations”), with original direction and choreography by Jen Wineman (New York: “Less Than 50%”), scenic design by Timothy R. Mackabee (Broadway’s “The Elephant Man”; “Guards at the Taj”, Lucille Lortel Award), costume design by Heidi Leigh Hanson (Regional: “The Addams Family Musical”, “How I Learned to Drive”), lighting design by David Lander (Broadway’s “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical”; “Benghal Tiger at the Bagdad Zoo”, Drama Desk Award) and sound design by Emma Wilk (New York: “The Waiting Game”, Regional: “The Heiress”). TheaterWorksUSA has led the theater for young and family audiences movement in New York City and across North America for more than half a century. Since 1962, the 501(c)3 not-for-profit has captured the imaginations of 100 million new and veteran theatergoers with an award-winning repertoire of more than 130 original plays and musicals. Acclaimed alumni include Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Disney’s “Frozen”), Jerry Zaks (“The Music Man”), Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“Dear Evan Hansen”), Joe Iconis (“Be More Chill”), Daphne Rubin-Vega (“Rent”), and Kathleen Chalfant (“Angels in America”). In addition to touring 11 family productions around the country, TheaterWorksUSA’s season highlights include the Broadway production of “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical”, and the world premieres of two New York Times Critic’s Picks, “Dog Man: The Musical” and “The Pout-Pout Fish”, which recently opened the New Victory Theater’s season. TAKE 6 February 26, 2022, Wentz Concert Hall

Bio graph y Take 6 (Claude McKnight, Mark Kibble, Joel Kibble, Dave Thomas, Alvin Chea and Khristian Dentley), heralded by Quincy Jones as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet,” is the quintessential a cappella group and the model for vocal genius. Six virtuosic voices united in crystal clear harmony, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop. With praise from such luminaries as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston, the multi-platinum-selling sextet has toured across the globe, collaborated across genres, and is recognized as the pre-eminent a cappella group in the world. With the popularity of televised vocal competitions such as the explosive a cappella show “The Sing Off” and the mania over singing driven comedy-dramas like “Glee” and “Smash”, Take 6 is the original torchbearer. Major public and corporate events remind everyone of this as Take 6 has triumphed among a gathering of stars including Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Nicks, and Ne-Yo at Walmart’s 50th Anniversary celebration; a sold out audience and standing ovation at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards where Take 6 captivated the audience with their rendition, performing with and honoring legendary singer-songwriter Ben E. King on his classic “Stand by Me.” As a group that knows no musical bounds, they then brought the house down with their tribute to folk icon Woody Guthrie with “This Land Is Your Land.” Take 6 has come a long way from their days at Huntsville, Alabama’s Oakwood College where McKnight formed the group as The Gentleman’s Estate Quartet in 1980. The group eventually became known as Alliance but when they signed to Reprise Records in 1987, they found that there was another group with the same name, so they became Take 6. Their self-titled debut CD won over jazz and pop critics, and they’ve never slowed down. What makes the music and the group last this long? The answers are direct and simple: faith, friendship, respect, and love of music. From their exceptional Christmas show to their innovative Symphony show, these qualities are at the heart of the Take 6 phenomenon.

Te ll us what you th ink!

After the performance, we would love to hear your feedback on the experience and what you hope to see next in our venues. We invite you to take our short survey.
