summer under the at Norfolk Collegiate! Do you want your child to get a jump start on next year? Or have fun while learning about space? Would you like your child to learn how to harvest crops and better understand the farm-to-table movement? Is your child curious about the world of coding or the magic of 3-D printing? What about designing and programming a robot? Thanks to our NEW and exciting experiential learning programs, this year’s Summer under the Oak offers a variety of opportunities for campers of all ages. For your convenience, we are offering a plethora of full-day and half-day options — whether academic, artistic or athletic — in a safe, fun, enriching atmosphere. We invite you to review our programs, which are categorized by academic, artistic and athletic camps in the following pages. We have organized the booklet by week, and within each week we have color coded the different types of camps to allow you to quickly find programs for your child. Included in this booklet are all of the program descriptions with dates, times and ages. As you make your camp decisions, carefully complete the required paperwork or visit our website to easily register. Remember to include your child’s health form (State of Virginia: MCH-213E) or most recent physical form from your doctor, along with the health/emergency form included in this brochure if your child does not currently attend Norfolk Collegiate. Each program is outlined and organized by week and is listed in order by academics, arts and athletics. Please use the colors below to navigate to the program types offered each week. center for academic achievement Keep your camper’s mind sharp this summer by knocking out his summer reading list, polishing his writing skills or expanding his knowledge of game coding. Our programs take learning outside of the classroom to challenge students in other exciting areas such as robotics, chess and science exploration. center for arts Hands-on art classes, musical theater and musical instruments take the spotlight in this center. With choices ranging from pottery to musical theater, your camper is sure to find something to tap into his creative side this summer. center for athletics — on our NEW TURF FIELDS Summer is a great time to get outside and run around, try a new sport or brush up on your camper’s athletic skills before his competitive season begins. Come and experience our NEW TURF FIELDS, too. center for outside exploration Grab your sunblock and get ready to explore the outdoors. Campers will travel throughout Hampton Roads in search of secret fishing holes, historic landmarks and volunteer hours while helping those in the community.

Required Forms and Identification:

In accordance with the Virginia State Law and the Virginia Department of Social Services, Norfolk Collegiate requires the following information from each registered participant: • A copy of the student’s Virginia Health Form (You can obtain a copy from your school. Current Norfolk Collegiate students will already have one on file.)

• Identification verification through a copy of the participant’s birth certificate, passport, child military ID OR proof of enrollment at a Virginia school (example: copy of a report card).

Parents will also receive a detailed, informational email regarding specifics of the program one week before the start of the camp.

*Several of the Center for Art and Center for Athletics programs will take place at the middle and upper school located on Granby Street. This is noted in the booklet using the codes to the right. Pick-up times may vary and extended care may not be available depending on the number of students participating.

Refunds must be requested two weeks before the start of the requested camp. Twenty percent of the total fee is non-refundable. No refund will be given if a camper is dismissed due to disciplinary action. Norfolk Collegiate Summer Programs reserve the right to cancel any camp

due to low enrollment. Participates will be notified of cancelled camps at least 7 days before the start of the camp. Fees for cancelled camps will be refunded or may be applied to another camp.

Norfolk Collegiate’s Extended Day Program: Morning and afternoon care is a place

for your child to get pumped up in the morning for the day’s activities and to wind down after a full day of fun and excitement. Each camper will be escorted by staff members to his or her designated camp five minutes before it begins. An afternoon snack will be provided to campers enrolled in afternoon care. The hours of extended day care are 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m., and the fee is $30 per week for morning care and $35 per week for afternoon care. This fee will not be prorated. In case of an emergency, there is a onetime drop-in rate of $12 per day for the morning or afternoon session. There will not be extended care services provided for camps at the middle or upper school campus. Please contact the office to make arrangements in the event that your child might need transportation provided to the lower school.

Field Trips: Some camps include field trips

in the local area. Transportation for these trips is provided by school buses with certified drivers. Norfolk Collegiate’s Summer Program teachers accompany campers on all field trips. Your registration form includes blanket field trip permission; however, you will be notified of specific field trips before they occur.

Emergency/Medical Information:

Please provide detailed information for your child in the medical and emergency contact section of the application. If your child does not attend Norfolk Collegiate, we must have a copy on file of his or her Virginia Health Form, which includes an immunization record and recent physical. If medication must be given to your child during camp hours (including EpiPens® and medication related to asthma), a separate form for medication administration and

authorization must be completed by the parent/ guardian and child’s physician. Please contact the Summer Program’s Office for this form. All medication must be dropped off in the Summer Program’s Office by the parent/guardian.

Lunch and Snack: Students MUST bring their OWN lunch in a labeled bag or lunch box each day. Bag lunches will not be provided this year. Students may also bring additional morning and afternoon snacks and drinks. Refrigeration will not be provided for student lunches. Please make sure your camper’s lunch is labeled. Students registered for a morning and an afternoon camp will be supervised in groups from 12:0012:30 p.m. for lunch and recess free of charge. T-shirts: Each participant will receive one camp T-shirt with his or her paid registration. Please be sure to include the participant’s shirt size on the application. Clothing and Personal Items:

All clothing, equipment, electronic devices and other personal items should be labeled with your child’s name. Norfolk Collegiate will not be responsible for lost items.

Electronic devices: Campers will be allowed

to use electronic devices only when permitted and supervised by the program teacher and for instruction purposes. All devices must be kept in personal book bags during lunch, recess and extended care hours.

Staff: Staff members have been carefully

selected to ensure that all students have a safe, and enriching summer experience. Each program has been created by a qualified coordinator who will lead the day-to-day activities. Additional assistance may be provided by camp counselors and high school volunteers.

Week of June 13-17 Everything Music!

Oaks Cheer

Learn how to build a musical instrument with household items. Jam with friends while playing ORFF instruments and experiment singing a cappella music similar to Pentatonix. Campers create a pottery ocarina, make a music video with their friends, play music theory and singing games, and enjoy a day at the beach while creating a piece of musical art. Performers will hone their skills in vocal production, movement and creativity. Come and join us for a week-long camp of musical fun! G

Join Norfolk Collegiateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s varsity cheerleading team for a week of NCS spirit during its first Oaks cheer camp! From learning the classic cheers one hears at basketball games to the basic rule of thumb for cheerleading, this camp is sure to be a high energy kick off to your studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer break. By the end of the week, campers will be experts in cheers, dances and basic stunts to show off at the end-of-the-week performance in front of their parents and friends. T

Fine Arts and Crafts Campers will explore a different fine art medium each day. They will complete projects using materials such as graphite, acrylic paint, pen and ink, oil pastels and water colors. In addition, campers will complete a make-and-take craft each day. Participants will create their own portfolio, and we will have an art exhibition on the final day of camp. (MAX. Ultimate Sports A camp with the ultimate athlete in mind! Each day, campers will focus on a different sport, both indoors and out. They will learn the basic rules and fundamental skills involved for each sport. The importance of good sportsmanship will be stressed as campers participate in friendly competitions throughout the week. There will be at least one off-campus field trip included and a visit to the new turf fields on Friday. T Rising grades 2-6, Session: June 13-17, 9 A.M.-3 P.M. Cost: $250

Week of June 20-24 farm-to-table Campers will delight in bringing hand-grown vegetables to their own tables by sowing, growing and harvesting their own crops. Campers will learn how to grow plants from seeds, the factors that affect plant growth, how to optimize growth and the correct methods of harvesting, as well as fruit and vegetable preservation and preparation. Campers also will learn and experiment with concepts such as plant parts and growth cycles, photosynthesis, the water cycle, measurement and more. Campers will learn the farm-to-table concept through hands-on experiences and from Master Gardener experts. T Rising grades 4-6 Session: June 20-24, 9 A.M.-noon Cost: $150

Coding Learn to code! Campers will build controls, game play and leaderboards. Create realistic games and work with teammates to brainstorm, debug and problem solve effectively. Campers will create their own storyline animations and sounds while building a portfolio of games to share with friends. Science Exploration Grab your goggles! We are going on a scientific discovery mission. Explore the world of science through everyday objects, such as toys, food and nature. There will be explosions, a few creations and a lot of discoveries. Put on your lab coat and pull out your paintbrush as we dive into the art of science! Brickheadz STEM Maker Lab with Robots Begin your camper’s summer vacation learning how to build and engineer solutions to problems, meeting challenges and learning how robots work. Campers will learn about and use Little Bits Circuit sets, LEGO® We Do and Ozobots® to learn and practice basic programming and circuit building skills. Your camper will use his robot to complete a mission and build his own Brush Bot to take home! T Rising grades 1-5 Session: June 20-24, 12:30-3:30 P.M. Cost: $150

Make-and-Take It Games What better way is there to learn and to keep skills fresh than by having fun? That’s what Make-andTake It Games is all about! We’ll be making game boards and other game pieces to use all summer long. Each camper will get cards and rules to suit his or her level of skill. By the end of the week, campers will be armed with games to practice math, reading and spelling the whole summer! T Rising grades 1-3 Session: June 20-24, 12:30-3:30 P.M. Cost: $150

Art Smarts! Does your child like optical illusions? Is he or she interested in defying gravity with paint? This is the camp for him or her! Experiment with drawing, sculpting and throwing – yes throwing – paint! Have fun, enjoy your creativity and learn at the same time! T Rising grades 1-3 Session: June 20-24, 9 A.M.-3 P.M. Cost: $250

Working the Wheel Campers will work mainly on the potter’s wheel. Beginner and intermediate wheel techniques will be introduced. In addition, campers will be introduced to various methods of surface decorations and glazing techniques. Some hand construction and building techniques will be introduced. All projects will be fired and glazed. (Some pieces may need to be picked up after camp has ended.) (MAX. 8 STUDENTS) G Rising grades 4-12 Session: June 20-24, 9 A.M.-noon Cost: $175

Soccer — NEW TURF FIELDS Norfolk Collegiate has partnered with CR Brasil Soccer Academy and Coach Rizzo for a week of fun on our new turf fields. CR Brasil Soccer Camps began in 2009 with one week of camp and since has developed several programs to help youth soccer players and teams accomplish their goals. Born in Brazil, Rizzo has dedicated his life to coaching players of all levels and ages, including Collegiate’s varsity boys’ and girls’ soccer teams. In 2012, he was selected Coach of the Year and took the TCIS title. Soccer camps will take place at Collegiate’s new turf complex. Learn more about CR-Brazil Soccer Academy at www.cr-brasil.com. Virginia Scrapbook Tour Students will integrate technology into their exploration of local Virginia historical sites. While visiting the historical sites, campers will be allowed to use their own electronic devices to capture important pictures and document each location. There will be daily field trips, and students are allowed to bring their own devices

for use during the camp. Students will need to bring lunch, snacks and drinks daily. This camp will leave from the lower school on Tidewater Drive each day. T Rising grades 3-5 Session: June 20-24, 9 A.M.-3 P.M. Cost: $300

Gone Fishin’ Campers will create their own fish stories as they travel to area fishing “holes” and hopefully reel in the big one! Campers will learn how to bait a hook, cast and fish with a bobber. Campers will visit a different fishing location everyday to test the waters with their fishing skills. Campers will need their own fishing pole and small tackle box along with lunch, a bathing suit and sunscreen. Fishing is a great way to relax, spend time with friends and family, and maybe have a great meal that night from your catch. Students will need to bring their own lunch, snacks, drinks and fishing poles. This camp will leave from the lower school on Tidewater Drive each day. T Rising grades 4-8 Session: June 20-24, 8 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. Cost: $300

Community Service This camp is designed to give each student an opportunity to earn volunteer hours whether for school or the enjoyment of helping others. Campers will volunteer their time with a different organization each day. Please join them in making a difference in our community. Students will receive 20 hours of community service for each week completed. Students will need to bring lunches, snacks and drinks! This camp will leave from the lower school on Tidewater Drive each day. (MAX. 12 STUDENTS) T Rising grades 7-9 Session 1: June 20-24, 9 A.M.-3 P.M. Cost: $250

Week of June 27-July 1 Brickheadz Olympics Design, build and program robots to complete Olympic challenges, games and races! Campers will learn how to design and program robots that can perform tasks, complete missions and win the gold! This camp is a fun, challenging introduction to the world of robotics and uses blocks of programming to simplify the process. LEGO WeDo, EV3 and motorized sets are used to instruct campers at their level of readiness. Limited to one camper per robot kit. T Rising grades 1-5 Session: June 27-July 1, 9 A.M.-noon Cost: $150

Kick-Start Summer Reading Kick-start your camper’s summer reading requirement under the guidance of a certified teacher. Read and discuss his required summer reading and work on his school’s assigned reading projects. Campers will learn comprehension strategies, participate in fun language arts activities and engage in group discussions. Students may bring e-readers to use during independent reading activities. Number Cruncher Has your child ever been in a mental math game? Does he like to roll the dice or have the edge to tackle mathematical concepts? Join us as we explore math in an all new way! We will enrich your camper’s math skills through math fact games, problemsolving competitions, logical reasoning and spatial math concept tournaments. Who knew math could be so much fun? Reading is FUNtastic Enhance your student’s love of literature through a variety of games and creative methods! This interactive course will include iPads®, SMART® board activities, Readers’ Theater and writing adventures to help keep your camper’s skills fresh over the summer. World Travelers Grab your passport because our campers are going on a journey around the world! Visit a new country each day through literature, games, art activities, geography and history. Chess (Beginner and Intermediate) Championship Chess presents a systematic, fun way to build skills through instruction while students play chess. Studies show that chess improves math, reading and problem-solving skills, and our methods connect these academic benefits to our classes. Art Safari Visit the Virginia Zoo for inspiration or draw in the wilds of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Art Safari Camp is a full-day camp where young artists have the opportunity to explore animals and nature through a variety of art forms and styles. Week of July 5-8 OAKS OLYMPIC SPORTS FUN What is summer without a little fun? This week is filled with summer fun for all ages. Campers will explore a variety of different sports, games and water fun related to the Summer Olympics. There will be two mid-week field trips. At the end of the week, students will come together for a closing ceremonies camp celebration and ice cream party with prizes. T Rising grades 1-5 Session: July 5-8, 9 A.M.-3 P.M. Cost: $200

Week of July 11-15 MAD SCIENCE Brixology Let the tinkering begin! Campers will get hands-on with LEGO® bricks to construct various engineeringthemed projects. From assembling a space station to building boats and vehicles, campers will explore the many facets of engineering. Your future engineer will build upon his or her creativity to solve real world design challenges while developing his or her problem-solving and teambuilding skills. Each day features an exciting take-home project built by your camper that he or she may use at home with other LEGO® sets. T Rising grades 2-6 Session: July 11-15, 9 A.M.-noon Cost: $150

Green Thumb Catch an insect, grow a terrarium, plant a pizza herb garden and save the earth – all while learning about nature and the world around us through exciting expeditions, science and environmental exploration. Our Green Thumb Club will ignite your child’s passion for nature, recycling and learning about the earth through educational activities and science investigations. It’s time to join the Green Thumb Club! T Rising grades 1-5 Session: July 11-15, 9 A.M.-noon Cost: $150

Comic Creations Does your child have a knack for drawing? Does he like to write? We have the camp for him! Join us as we explore the world of comics. We will learn about the different styles of cartooning, create new characters and build a portfolio of your camper’s work. T Rising grades 3-5 Session: July 11-15, 9 A.M.-noon Cost: $150

Builders Calling all inventors, creators, builders and designers! Come and build awesome creations

with us. We will create our own designs and make structures using recyclable materials, LEGOs® and other interesting items such as lifesavers, paper bags and marshmallows. No skills are necessary; however, your camper will gain skills in communication, problem solving, reasoning, developing creativity and teamwork. T Rising grades 1-5 Session: July 11-15, 12:30-3:30 P.M. Cost: $150

Sports Stats BOOYAH! This is the camp for sports fanatics! Join our team for a fast-paced session where campers will create a fantasy team, analyze their players’ week-to-week stats and cross-compare their players to other players in the league. Sports Stats is not limited to your camper’s fantasy team. We will learn how different size balls and grips affect speed and how movement and force can generate energy and speed. Who knew sports was all math, probability, statistics, graphing and analyzing data! T Rising grades 3-5 Session: July 11-15, 12:30-3:30 P.M. Cost: $150

Draw. Paint. Print! Learn tips and tricks and see the sights, too! Young artists will explore a variety of methods for drawing and painting, while also learning how to reproduce their work using printing techniques. Campers also will visit local museums and gardens in search of inspiration during this full-day camp. T Rising grades 1-3 Session: July 11-15, 9 A.M.-3 P.M. Cost: $250

Playful Pottery Exploring the possibilities of clay, campers will work mainly with hand building and experimenting with textures and other surface applications. We also will introduce

the potter’s wheel, and campers will learn the beginning techniques. Various glazing methods will be introduced, as well. All pieces will be fired and glazed. This camp is located at the upper school located on Granby Street. (MAX. 12 STUDENTS) G Rising grades 3-5 Session: July 11-15, 9 A.M.-3 P.M. Cost: $250

Lacrosse — NEW TURF FIELDS Norfolk Collegiate Lacrosse Camp will provide excellent lacrosse instruction. Our campers will improve their skills with an emphasis on FUN. Each day is structured so that participants will receive quality instruction while having the opportunity to play the game. We will pass along many drills and techniques that are taught to players at the NCAA level. We guarantee a very low camper-to-staff ratio. All ability levels are welcomed and encouraged. All of our coaching and teaching is provided by former or current NCAA coaches and players. Norfolk

Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space! From the Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program sends children on a quest for exploration! Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel and participate in a rocket launch! T

Visit Italy and make tiramisu. Sail to Mexico and make salsa. Then cruise to a new culinary destination like France to make crepes. In this camp, students will explore the tastes of the world, so pack their bags because this is an adventure that they will not want to miss! Our chefs will cook and craft the week away with a very special cookbook as part of their travel souvenirs. T

MAD SCIENCE: Eureka! Inventors Campers will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and most important of all – their minds! With a little ingenuity, children will create catapults and forts, construct working light sticks to take home and assemble a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs. Textiles and Fiber Creations Campers will enjoy working with craft mediums such as weaving, batik, glass, printmaking and fibers. In addition, campers will complete a small make-and-take craft each day. At the conclusion of the week, campers will have an ART EXHIBITION to display their work. Musical Theater Camp Our two-week musical theater camp is the perfect opportunity for children who love to sing and dance! Basic vocal, choreography and creative drama skills will be taught by skilled teachers as we bring a show “from the page to the stage.” Young actors will have the chance to explore basic drama techniques, such as improvisation,

pantomime and character work. We also will explore the magic that happens behind the scenes with lessons in set building, stage makeup and costume design. Our camp will culminate with the performance of our fully staged musical on the last day of camp. 3-D Printing and Design Enhance your child’s understanding of geometry and 3-D design. In this hands-on class, students will explore mathematics, design and creativity. By creating their own 3-D models, students will develop spatial-relations skills used by architects, engineers, artists and mathematicians. Chain Reaction Machine Team Challenge In this half-day program campers are divided into teams of two to three and challenged to build elaborate, multi-step, Rube Goldberg-style machines. Using a variety of building materials, found objects, cool tools and a heaping dose of creativity; each team will strive to build the most convoluted and wacky machine possible. Each machine will be like a bigger and cooler live-action version of the classic board game, Mousetrap. Each team will compete for a variety of prizes awarded in categories, such as number of steps, creativity, best use of objects and more. Week of July 25-29 Jump-Start Kindergarten This camp is for rising kindergarten students who want to familiarize themselves with a full-day school experience. Jump-Start Third Grade

iPad® Introduction Students will be introduced to five of the main creative apps that we use in the classroom and explore the many uses of these apps. After creating products in all five apps, campers will put their products together. They also will create folders for core subjects that will be used to organize work during the school year. The final product will be showcased in a Google e-portfolio, which campers will build during the last two days. Field Hockey—NEW TURF FIELDS

This is a week filled with activities to practice and review math, reading and study skills in preparation for the transition to third grade. Campers will increase reading comprehension skills; sharpen math fluency and problem solving skills; and use technology to enhance the learning experience. high school programs High School Chemistry During summer chemistry, students will examine the same full range of concepts that are covered during the typical full-year course. Summer Under the Oak Volunteer Program This program is designed for students who are interested in gaining experience working with children and becoming a counselor one day. Students will assist teachers, coaches and staff members throughout the week while gaining valuable leadership skills, communication skills and responsibility. This program is limited to three volunteers per session and volunteers must complete a separate volunteer application in order to be accepted and register.
