A MESSAGE FROM MR. KENNEDY Dear Norfolk Collegiate Community, Thank you! Your support during this past year has been amazing and it has allowed us to focus on providing a great education and an even better experience to our students despite the numerous challenges we encountered during the most unconventional school year I’ve experienced in my 30 plus academic career. Despite the daily challenges that operating a school during a pandemic brought, our community also experienced the sudden loss of our dedicated board chair and alumni parent, Benjamin Cottrell V. His support over the years has been impressive and we were all saddened by his unexpected passing. However, it brought many successes and firsts for our school. We welcomed new families into our community, many of whom were not able to experience the traditional school events and Oak community due to COVID-19 regulations. However, our students and dedicated faculty and staff came together. We offered a hybrid approach to learning, and as a result, our students learned from home and in person (you will see more about this in the pages to come). Students learned while being physically distanced in their classes. They wore face coverings and submitted health screenings, and through it all, they smiled and did their best to make an unconventional year a great year. We also had a hybrid approach to fundraising and our community rallied around us and supported our events, including our first virtual auction and an amazingly successful second Day of Giving which raised more than $285,780 for our school! You’ll see more about this historic event in the pages to come. It was also a time for reimagining traditions. We celebrated the Class of 2021 with a car parade, a field day, a formal dinner together under the stars and held their commencement ceremony outside on our Franklin Family and Mathas Family Fields. Through it all, our community came together and supported the school. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support and look forward to continuing our mission: to develop critical thinkers, doers and explorers through innovative, engaging instruction in an inclusive and supportive learning community. Sincerely,

Scott G. Kennedy Head of School

OUR RESPONSE TO THE

COVID-19 PANDEMIC

A HYBRID APPROACH TO TEACHING The 2020-21 academic year was unlike anything the Norfolk Collegiate community had experienced. In March 2020, then-Gov. Ralph Northam closed schools in response to a stay-at-home COVID-19 mandate. In the months that followed, Collegiate was able to provide asynchronous and synchronous instruction to complete the 2019-20 school year. However, that summer brought a plethora of questions about what the 2020-21 academic year would look like. Would we be in school or virtual? Would students and faculty be safe? What would lunch look like? Would we have athletics?

8

Our goal was simple: Bring our students, faculty and staff safely back to campus for a great education in a safe, communityfocused environment. Guided by protocol from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Virginia Department of Health and the Commonwealth of Virginia’s reopening plans for schools, Collegiate’s administration sought medical, instructional, counseling and sanitization guidance from within and outside our community to guide the reopening process. In August 2020, we proudly opened our campus to students, faculty and staff for what would be an unpredictable year with frequent changes and adaptations. Daily health monitoring, social distancing guidelines, face coverings, frequent hand sanitation and sanitization of desks between classes and throughout the day became the norm for students, faculty and staff. A HYBRID APPROACH TO LEARNING We offered lower school families with previously diagnosed medical conditions that could be impacted by COVID an option to opt-in to a virtual learning model. Students would be assigned individual work, Zoom in to class lessons throughout the day and have dedicated time with their teacher. At the end of each trimester, families were able to continue virtual learning or decide to attend in person.

Lower school parent Greg Mottinger gets his son, Cole ’34, ready for his first day of school. Face coverings, frequent hand washing and sanitization and daily health screenings were part of the daily routine for each Oak this year.

For middle and upper school families, students were offered the opportunity to opt-in to a virtual learning model on a quarter by quarter basis. Similar to the lower school model, students would join their classes via Zoom from their homes. Athletics were canceled for the fall season; however, a modified winter athletic season saw a handful of teams begin to compete again. Student-athletes went virtual during their seasons and attended in person once their season was over. The spring saw even more life as more athletics took place with the nicer weather allowing teams to play outdoors.

To ensure students were able to maintain physical distance during their classes, the school utilized alternative classroom spaces, such as the King Boardroom, the library and gallery spaces.

A HYBRID APPROACH TO FUNDRAISING While some time-honored traditions were paused for the year, such as Fall Fair and Homecoming, others were reimagined. The Class of 2020 enjoyed an intimate formal dinner in the Harris Courtyard, the Annual Auction went virtual and offered family pizza nights and wine tastings with celebrity chefs and assemblies were class-centric instead of division-wide. In the end, we learned to adapt daily and created a positive experience for our students and while still being true to our mission.

Board of Trustees purchase school theme face coverings for each student, faculty and staff member for the 2020-21 school year.

He was also involved with other community organizations, including The Williams School, The Hermitage Museum and Gardens, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Virginia Military Academy Keydet Club and the Church of the Good Shepherd. “Ben was an invaluable part of our Norfolk Collegiate School community throughout his life as a student, a parent of a student, and as chair of our Board of Trustees,” said Lang Williams, Board of Trustees vice president and current parent. “Ben truly defines the meaning of giving time, talents, treasure and leadership to the school we all deeply love. His leadership and dedication will be sorely missed.” Always a supporter of Collegiate, Cottrell joined the board in 2012 and became board chairman in 2019. His leadership, thoughtful counsel and commitment to the school will be missed by the entire Collegiate community. “It was an honor to serve under Ben’s leadership on the Collegiate Board,” said Trustee Taylor Franklin ’00. “Ben’s love for Norfolk Collegiate secured the school’s future for the next generation of Oaks. On a personal note, I will truly miss my good friend,

Ben’s focus was always on providing the best experience for our students. He was dedicated to our school, believed in our mission and worked tirelessly to advance Collegiate. As board chair, he supported the school and led the Board of Trustees during a time when the school navigated unprecedented challenges presented by the pandemic.

and I will ensure that his vision for Collegiate is implemented and continued well into the future.” Professionally, Cottrell served as president of Cottrell Contracting Corp. for the past 30 years. He also served as president of The Dredging Contractors of America during his career. When not working, he was a dedicated family man and avid sportsman. “Ben’s focus was always on providing the best experience for our students,” Head of School Scott Kennedy said. “He was dedicated to our school, believed in our mission and worked tirelessly to advance Collegiate. As board chair, he supported the school and led the Board of Trustees during a time when the school navigated unprecedented challenges presented by the pandemic. I could always rely on Ben for sound advice and thoughtful guidance as we worked together on the school’s behalf. I will miss his friendship and partnership. The school is stronger because of his work.” As a school, the impacts of Cottrell’s generosity and service will live on for generations to come.

COOLER THAN EVER New chiller greets students with fresh air

Thanks to the generoustiy of an anonymous donor, our youngest learners have a much more efficient and cooler learning environment following the installation of a new chiller at the lower school.

5 number of crane mechanics it took to operate, lift and remove the old system before the new unit could be installed.

18 the new system was moved using an 18-wheel semi-truck

14,500 weight of the new chiller, which is more than an adult African elephant!

While our students were learning from home in May 2020, our lower school campus was receiving a massive upgrade, thanks to the generosity of our anonymous donor. Though it wasn’t flashy, the much-needed improvement made a major difference for our youngest learners when they returned to the classrooms in August 2020. The addition of a new chiller, which is situated on the back side of our lower school, was needed for the past five years. The chiller works to cool down the water that runs through the pipes to classrooms before turning the air cool inside the building. Brought in on an 18-wheel semi-truck, the new unit weighed upwards of 14,500 pounds, which is more than an adult African elephant! It took five crane mechanics to operate, lift and remove the old unit before the new one was installed and came in at more than $100,000. Thanks to our generous donor, this facility upgrade allowed Collegiate’s faculty, staff and students to have the best experience possible. On campus to guide the installation process was Facility Manager Ron Chupik. “This new unit was very much needed at the lower school. The damage to the old unit was not cost-effective to repair and the unit itself was well past its lifespan. This new unit is also much more energy efficient. It was definitely time for this unit to be replaced.” Also there to welcome home the newest addition to campus was Lower School Head of School Cleteus Smith. “Rarely is there an item that dictates one’s comfort level for our students, as well as, for all of us, then what a chiller can provide,” he said of the new system. “It provides for all of us a comfortable learning environment where we remain as ‘cool as cucumbers’ while we learn and play. I would like to extend to all our deep appreciation for the ability to update our chiller!” As we welcomed our students back to campus in August 2020, they were greeted with a breath of fresh and cool air!

A TRADITION LONG CONTINUED When Kenneth Scribner first introduced Norfolk Collegiate students to the Jefferson Challenge in 2002, he hoped it would spark a Collegiate tradition. Since then, every senior class has had 100% participation in the Jefferson Challenge which he created, funded and established. Mr. Scribner was a philanthropist who believed in what Collegiate stood for and continued to support the school even after his death in 2014. He created, funded and established the Jefferson Challenge and provided generous funding for the school through his estate planning. His namesake, the Scribner Belltower, greets Oaks at the middle and upper school campus and has become synonymous with Collegiate. What is the Jefferson Challenge? The Jefferson Challenge educates students on the importance of philanthropy—both in their community and at the school. Designed to be a student giving program, the senior class officers, in conjunction with Collegiate’s advancement team, are mentored on how to solicit their peers to reach the 100% giving mark. All gifts made through the Jefferson Challenge go directly to the Collegiate Fund. The students learn throughout the year how to host fundraisers, track gifts and more.

Kenneth Scribner, left, first introduced the Jefferson Challenge to Norfolk Collegiate. Following his passing in 2021, faculty member Rick Davis, right, proudly resumed the legacy of giving at Collegiate through the Jefferson Challenge.

A New Era Following Scribner’s passing in 2021, the Jefferson Challenge continued with a renewed spark. Norfolk Collegiate’s beloved math teacher Rick Davis is continuing the Jefferson Challenge’s legacy as his way to continue to support the school, educate students and give back to the community. Davis believes that the Jefferson Challenge develops a well-rounded student and gives them the skills to be the best version of themselves outside the Collegiate’s walls. If you would like to learn more about the Jefferson Challenge, please contact Cayte Brown at cbrown@ norfolkcollegiate.org.

Spaces, such as the Harris Courtyard, were reimagined during the 2020-21 school year. Students were able to socialize, eat lunch and study at the tables set up throughout the courtyard. Chairs were provided and a moveable interactive panel allowed teachers to utilize the space for an outdoor classroom. The Harris Courtyard will see many improvements for the 2022-23 academic year. Thanks to the vision of our Design Thinking 8 students, the space is being renovated and will include a gazebo and additional seating areas made from reclaimed wood.

The 24-hour online fundraiser had more than 650 Oaks come in strong and contribute over $280,000 to the Collegiate Fund! It was an incredible way for our community to come together during a time where we could not gather in person. The day was full of raffles, virtual trivia with guest appearances, matches and challenges, and most importantly, school spirit! Below are some of the ways in which each division joined the school during this incredible fun-filled day!

LOWER SCHOOL students participated in a coin drive to support Day of Giving. Through the coin drive, students learned the importance of philanthropy and giving back to their community. Throughout the weeks leading up to Day of Giving, piggy banks, mason jars, ziploc bags and even a very large pickle jar full of coins were brought into the lower school for the drive! With the support of their families, the lower school collected over 28,000 coins for a whopping $1,200.

MIDDLE SCHOOL families stepped up to our mid-day pop up challenge! The challenge was set to have selected faculty and staff take a pie to the face if 55% of middle school families made a gift to the day of giving campaign. With a total of 69% of families participating, this made for a very cheerful and messy afternoon in the middle school hallway! Students were able to select the honorees who included Head of Middle School Charlene Loope, Middle School Dean of Students Jill Archer, teachers Garrett Booker, Crisy Cooper, Michael Johnson, Ellen Alt and Middle School Administrative Assistant Christian Van Deven. No one was safe, not even Head of School Scott Kennedy!

An added element to Day of Giving was our Giving Circles. A gift of $1,000, whether from an individual or a group of four people, earned one vote toward one of four needs of the school. The winner of the giving circle was to improve the upper school Harris Courtyard. With outdoor spaces being such an integral part of leaning, we are excited for the courtyard to be getting a facelift. Adding a pergola, comfortable outdoor seating and enhancing the landscaping will create a relaxing atmosphere. With solar charging stations and added wifi connections, the students will be able to connect as needed. These upgrades will create an innovative and sustainable space to enhance the experience of our students.

DID YOU KNOW? If you are 70½ or older, gifting all or a portion of the required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA account or inherited IRA can benefit your family and the mission of Norfolk Collegiate. By gifting a portion of the RMD amount you will not pay federal or state income tax on a direct transfer to Norfolk Collegiate; however, you will be making a difference in the lives of your grandchildren and other Collegiate students.
