FACE COVERINGS Norfolk Collegiate is following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) for face coverings.

1 2 3 4 5 6

All students, faculty and staff will be required to wear face coverings that cover the mouth, nose and chin. It is important to ensure that the mask can be held in place comfortably with little adjustment using elastic bands or ties. For example, bandannas and gaiter masks are not appropriate face coverings because they do not securely cover the nose, mouth and chin. Additionally, face coverings and masks should not have valves, vents, mesh, logos or writing on them in accordance with the CDC guidelines and the school’s dress code. It is important to ensure that the mask can be held in place comfortably with little adjustment using elastic bands or ties. Face shields alone are not appropriate as a substitute for a face covering. If your student decides to wear a face shield, a face covering must also be worn under the shield.

According to the WHO, the ideal combination of material for non-medical masks should include three layers as follows: 1. An innermost layer of a hydrophilic material (cotton or cotton blends); 2. An outermost layer made of hydrophobic material (polypropylene, polyester or their blends), which may limit external contamination from penetration through to the wearer’s nose and mouth; 3. A middle hydropholic layer of synthetic non-woven material such as polypropylene or a cotton layer which may enhance filtration or retain droplets. We recommend all students have more than one face covering for use throughout the week. Face coverings should be washed between uses.

Want more information? Please reach out to your student’s division if you have additional questions on appropriate face coverings. The CDC and WHO also have excellent resources on how to properly put on, wear and remove face coverings. Click the links below for more information on face coverings. SAFETY PROCEDURES Returning to school will look and feel different; however, we’re implementing many protocols to support the recommended physical distancing and best practices to remain open safely. A dedicated resource board will be available for parents, faculty and staff at NorfolkCollegiate.org. Additionally, this document will be updated as guidance changes. Guided by health and safety regulations for schools, some of our measures include, but are not limited to, the following:

1 2 3

Face coverings will be required of all employees, students and visitors (pre-K3 through Grade 12) in the building. Based on guidance from medical professionals, specifically pediatric specialists, and public health protocols we’re requiring face coverings all day for pre-K3-Grade 12.

Our janitorial and custodial staff, with expert guidance from The Budd Group, have received specialized training in preparation for our reopening.

Daily health monitoring of our students and employees is one of the biggest responsibilities for the school. Students will be required to submit daily symptom checks from home via the Magnus Health app, Magnus Mobile, which is available to download from your app store.

DON”T FORGET YOUR WATERBOTTLES The water fountains will remain closed throughout the buildings; however, our water bottle filling stations are open. Please remember to send a reusable water bottle to school with your child(ren) each day.

12

LUNCH, PE & RECESS LUNCHES & SNACKS

FLIK Dining will provide daily food service to all students. UPPER SCHOOL LUNCH Lunch will be served in the Collegiate Café and tables will be set-up in the Collegiate Café, Main Lobby, Harris Courtyard and Meredith Center for the Arts Gallery. These multiple locations will allow students to remain three feet apart and to remove their face coverings while eating and remaining at the table. MIDDLE SCHOOL LUNCH Lunch will be served in the Collegiate Cafe and students will be able to eat at tables set up in the Collegiate Café and Main Lobby. These multiple locations allow students to remain three feet apart and to remove their face coverings with eating and while remaining at the table. LOWER SCHOOL LUNCH Kindergarten through Grade 5 will eat lunch in the cafeteria and auditorium so grade levels may be distanced and eat safely from one another. Pre-Kindergarten 3 and 4 will eat their lunches in their classrooms. Unfortunately at this time, parents will not be permitted to visit or have lunch with their students during lunch time. We will continue to monitor this COVID safety precaution to see if we can allow parents visitation throughout the school year. The water fountains in the lower school will remain closed for the time being, with the exception of the water bottle filling stations. Please remember to send a reusable water bottle to school with your child(ren) each day.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & RECESS

UPPER SCHOOL Grades 9 and 10 will have physical education. As in years past, students may opt-out of this graduation requirement, if they are playing an in-season Norfolk Collegiate sport. In these cases, with the expectation of those enrolled in Family Life for freshmen, student-athletes will have a study hall during their assigned PE bell. • Uniforms should be worn in all PE classes. Blue, black or gray Norfolk Collegiate shorts can be purchased in the Collegiate Corner and may be worn with any Norfolk Collegiate T-shirt, which may also be purchased in the Collegiate Corner. • Students will change for PE in locker rooms. • For questions regarding PE and athletics, please contact Mr. Jon Hall, director of athletics, at jhall@norfolkcollegiate.org. MIDDLE SCHOOL Grades 6-8 participate in physical education. • Students will change for PE in locker rooms. PE uniforms can be purchased through the school store. • For questions regarding PE and athletics, please contact Mr. Jon Hall, director of athletics, at jhall@norfolkcollegiate.org. LOWER SCHOOL Students will continue to have Physical Education (PE) and recess daily. These activities will be held outside, weather permitting. Students will be allowed to remove face coverings when participating in outdoor activities. Our playground areas will remain open to students, but grades will continue to access these areas at separate times throughout the day in order to allow students more space to run and play. The use of hand sanitizer and/or handwashing will be enforced both before and after recess and PE.
