SEPTEMBER 2016 Lower School students studied the works of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser for inspiration. Hundertwasser was known for his depictions of trees and people, as well as using untraditional shapes to create buildings. Here, our students created a mixed media work using various line types in the background and circular shapes for the trees, as one would often see in Hundertwasser’s pictures.

OCTOBER2016 Our second-grade students were introduced to Vincent Van Gogh’s works. They studied how he would paint and the inspiration behind some of his works, such as Starry Night. Students looked at the movement and the layering created through Van Gogh’s brushstrokes and his use of color. In honor of the season, they created a landscape piece with pumpkins in this style. Students also learned how to create value (lights and darks) with their pumpkins and how to make their pumpkins look three dimensional by shading and blending oil pastels.

NOVEMBER 2016

Our sixth-grade students explored positive and negative space in works inspired by the Japanese concept of “notan,” which focuses on the placement of light and dark elements within a composition. Students were given one sheet of black paper to draw and cut objects from – without adding paper or throwing any away. Everything the students cut was then reversed and placed on a larger sheet of white paper.

DECEMBER 2016

Our seventh- and eighth-grade 3-D art students used their names as inspiration for this introductory project in the quarter-long class. Beginning with an exploration of typography, students explored fonts and methods for drawing letters in different styles. They enlarged the designs onto stiff paper and were challenged to create one point of emphasis in their work, whether through color or pattern. Finally, they cut and assembled their sculptures. This lesson demonstrated the need to think and work with new variables, as working sculpturally requires an understanding of gravity and engineering.

2017-18 Re-enrollment contracts issued

RE-ENROLLMENT SEASON Show your Collegiate love by re-enrolling for the 2017-18 school year by Feb. 10!

FEBRUARY 2017 Did you know that khanga fabric (from the old Bantu verb ku-janga) is a colorful garment similar to kitenge and is worn by women and occasionally men throughout the African great lakes region? Our second-grade students integrated the traditional African fabric by designing their own fabric on silhouettes they created. In addition to the design, students incorporated various art elements, such as line, rhythm (use of line) and perspective (walking into the distance).

APRIL 2017 Upper school art foundation students were challenged to create three-dimensional works in clay around the concept of pairs. Coming up with creative solutions, the group then worked to pinch, pull, and coil clay. After their works were fired, students explored methods for glazing their pieces, which were fired one last time before the pairs were once again reunited.

JUNE 2017

Whether adding or subtracting elements from these pre-made masks, middle school students were challenged to create a design in honor of a famous artist or work. The key was not to reproduce the work, but to be inspired by the composition, style or brushwork. Here, students referenced the work of Jean DeBuffet, Vincent Van Gogh, Katsushika Hokusai, Roy Lichtenstein and Henri Rousseau.

JULY2017

Our seventh- and eighth-grade 2-D art students created dynamic compositions using collage, which is the ripping and tearing of color from magazines. Students explored hue and value, while also incorporating text into their final designs.

AUGUST 2017 Using letters, our kindergarten students created not only beautiful alphabets, but they learned that when they use words or letters in art, it is called text. Since art is connected to everyday actions, such as writing letters, it also serves as a way to connect actions and elements of art. For example, when they make the letter “z,” they are creating a zigzag. When they create an “s,” they are creating a swirly line. It also serves as an outlet for our students to explore different art mediums and learn how to use watercolors and oil pastels to create a watercolor resist.
