Steve Bannon’s

Run at the White House

Ends

By Lauren Victoria Burke (NNPA Newswire Contributor) Civil rights leaders and members of Congress praised the dismissal of Chief Strategist Steve Bannon from the White House; Bannon’s exit is just the latest departure from the chaotic Trump Administration, that has yet to win a major legislative victory. Bannon seemed to be in good spirits after the White House announced that he would be leaving the coveted post. In an interview with The Weekly Standard, Bannon said that he felt “jacked up.” “Now I’m free. I’ve got my hands back on my

By Lauren Victoria Burke (NNPA Newswire Contributor) During a conference call with reporters, Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), pledged to revisit the debate around impeachment when Congress returns after Labor Day and announced a new campaign to #RootOutRacism in the White House. Richmond promised a “robust discussion” about impeachment by the CBC when Congress returns on September 5. The House of Representatives hasn’t been in session since July 28; members often travel to their home districts during the August recess. With more than 400 days until the midterm elections of 2018, the CBC reaffirmed a position against the Trump Administration that would indicate that not much will change until Democrats are able to win a majority in the House or

Senate. Richmond insisted that the CBC will continue to focus on policies that impact African Americans, rather than the political spectacle that fills hours of cable news broadcasts. In response to President Trump’s recent comments about the White nationalists’ rally in Charlottesville, Va., that was attended by Ku Klux Klan members, neo-Nazis and White supremacists, the CBC has reaffirmed a hard stance against the Trump Administration. The CBC declined an invitation to meet with Trump, weeks ago. “Things will always reveal themselves if [we] give people time to do it,” said CBC Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.) regarding President Trump. Richmond mentioned that members of the CBC held a recent conference call and that civil disobedience had not been ruled out as they confront Trump’s policies. “We’ve come to the

conclusion that we are in a sad and shameful place,” Richmond told reporters. He then pointed to Trump advisors Sebastian Gorka and Stephen Miller by name as two members of the administration who, in his view, should not continue to work at the White House because of their White supremacist views. “The people who work in the White House should not be White nationalists or White supremacists,” added Richmond. “This country is having a crisis of leadership.” In a June 9 invitation, Trump had requested that all of the members of the CBC meet with him on a quarterly basis. On June 21, CBC leadership declined any further meetings with the president. CBC, See page 10A

Courtesy of Deputy Nick Gildroy Many inmates are provided opportunities to work while in custody in Ventura County jails. On November 22, 2016, Daniel Martinez, 26, was given that opportunity and was assigned as an inmate worker at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility. Martinez is currently serving a sentence for PC 530.5(a) – Identity Theft, HS 11378 – Possession For Sale Of A Controlled Substance, PC 273.5(a) – Inflict Corporal Injury on Current/Former Spouse, HS 11377(a) – Possession of a Controlled Substance and multiple probation violations. During a random contraband search at the jail, Martinez was found to be in possession of drugs. After further investigation, it was discovered that Martinez’ wife, Ilyanna Hernandez, 21, had coordinated with her husband to purchase drugs and smuggle them into the jail. The investigation revealed that Martinez had approached a fellow inmate worker, Michael Curiale, 37, and arranged to have Curiale smuggle

drugs into the jail via the Ojai Police Station, where Curiale was assigned as an inmate worker. Curiale was

Voices and View Points How to break free from being a “People Pleaser” Words to Live by

Dr. Lonnie G. McCowan, pastor of Miracle Center of Ventura

By Pastor Lonnie G. McCowan The need for other people to validate you, or give you permission to be amazing is very dangerous. This will cause you to become stuck and you will never realize your true potential. Most people who have a need to please people are struggling with inside fears of rejection. When you find yourself trying to do everything you can to make other people like you, or say nice things about you, it is a form of selfabuse. Self-abuse is when you stop caring for yourself. In a sense, you become emotionally unavailable for “YOU.” What causes a person to become a people pleaser and neglect their own dreams and goals in hopes that others will like them, is generally something that happened when they were very young. At some point, they were probably criticized consistently growing up. Having an early experi-

ence of crippling criticism from people that you look up to like parents, teachers, or peers, opens the door for this anxiety to please people for acceptance. If you fail to get free from this you will begin to neglect with passive aggression, you will criticize yourself and be very sarcastic in conversations making yourself the punch line of the joke. One of the biggest things you will do is overload your life and schedule trying to help someone else with their dreams and goals, while neglecting yours. Eventually this will destroy your relationships because you will never truly be happy and eventually it will show in areas of your life. You’ll start becoming more concerned about other people’s family, schedules, finances, health, etc., than your own. This neglect will eventually leave you stressed and depressed because the demands that you put on yourself because trying to please other people creates a cycle of defeat. It’s like being in quicksand; you slowly go down. The worst thing about this is you will be taken advantage of eventually. Even people who are not wanting to take advantage of you will find that you are overtaxing yourself to please others and they might just go along with you because they Paid Advertisement

think they are doing you a favor by letting you do them a favor. How do you conquer this? First of all, you have to stop neglecting yourself! You do this by refocusing. Take the energy and time you are using to care for others and take care for YOURSELF. If helping someone is hurting you, you must back out. Get busy exercising. Join a club. Do something for you and don’t feel bad. It’s okay for you to give yourself attention for a season. Here’s another thing you can do. Practice saying, “No, I apologize. I can’t do that.” It is a legitimate answer. You really don’t need to explain beyond that. The statement, “No, I apologize. I can’t do that,” will eventually cause people to respect you because you respect yourself. Remember every single day we are training and teaching people how to treat us by the way we treat ourselves. If you neglect yourself people will neglect you; If you don’t take your time seriously, people won’t take your time seriously. I met a friend of mine for coffee at a local Starbucks. We set the time for 9 a.m.; he arrived at 10 a.m. First, you have to know the only reason I was still there is because I always bring reading and writing material so that no PEOPLE, See page 10A

Volunteer corps to help County of Ventura combat graffiti in watershed channel

Graffiti mobilization event to draw more than 150 student volunteers, Aug. 26 WHAT: The County of Ventura and City of Oxnard Police Department are teaming up with California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI), Gold Coast Transit and private citizen Marvin Boos, to mobilize a massive graffiti abatement event to beautify Oxnard’s watershed channels. On Saturday, Aug. 26, a volunteer corps comprised of approximately 150 students from CSUCI’s Student Service Summit program, led by Boos, a longtime volunteer who specializes in graffiti removal, will tackle watershed channels where graffiti is prevalent. Ventura County Public Works Agency’s (VCPWA) Central Service Department’s Health & Safety Division will provide safety training to volunteers prior to the event, and VCPWA’s Watershed Protection District will provide paint and other materials for the job. The City Oxnard Police Department will assist with the paint supply set-up and will provide refreshments for the student volunteers. Additionally, Gold Coast Transit will donate three buses to shuttle volunteers and event staffers to and from the community service sites. The event was coordinated by County of Ventura Supervisor John C. Zaragoza and CSUCI’s Police Department, which sought a community service project for incoming first year and transfer students. “Great things happen when community members, businesses and government come together to accomplish a shared goal of preserving the beautification of our beloved community which benefits us all,” said Supervisor Zaragoza. “We are inspired by the work of our young adult volunteers and their commitment to civic service.” Graffiti abatement in Ventura County watersheds is accomplished primarily through community volunteer efforts. Worth Repeating

The Mind Matters By Patricia Lynn Belkowitz, C.Ht., EFT-CC The waning days of summer have been full of adventure and exploration. I’ve been traveling. In fact, I’ve been exploring so much I haven’t had the opportunity to reflect on where I’ve been or to take care of the business of writing about it. Sometimes it’s okay to put things on hold until you can give them the attention they deserve. It’s okay to explore other ways to get things done. You always have options. You always have choices. You get to decide, and you get to give yourself permission to do so. You are the boss of you. So, since I am the boss of me, I’ve decided to give myself permission to repeat a column from a few years ago. If you haven’t read it before, it really doesn’t matter if it is a repeat, because it is new

to you. If you have read it, I think you may find that it is worth repeating. In either case, enjoy. Give Yourself Permission Do you remember field trips? A day of learning, exploring and adventure that took place outside of the classroom? Do you remember the excitement and anticipation leading up to the big day? And of course, you must not forget the all-important “permission slip” which was necessary proof that your parents knew where you were going and they with okay with you taking a day off from the responsibilities of school. Without it, you were unable to board the bus and were assigned to some other classroom to do stupid busywork. All the while your friends have 96 bottles of beer on the wall and you know you are missing out!

Patricia Lynn Belkowitz, C.Ht., EFT-CC

A field trip meant a bus ride, often to new and unfamiliar territory. You might even cross a state line! You got to sing silly songs and make faces at drivers passing by. Instead of your teacher telling you what to do, you were now instructed to listen to somebody’s mom or dad and stay with your buddy. Of course, teaming up with your good friend was always a REPEATING, See page 10A

Fear is Your Advantage Aspects Galore

By Sue Hines What is it you are most afraid of? What you fear is a clue to your center of gravity. It is a little window to your soul. Fear is your advantage – let it feed your success! “Fear” is the label for the flutter in your heart that makes you stop. It is the sinking, hollow feeling in the pit of your stomach, but it is also your greatest guide. Fear triggers a host of changes that give us fantastic abilities for a short while. The adrenaline pumping through us makes us superstrong, super-fast or it grants us uncanny hearing or sight. The fight or flight response in the face of immediate present danger, is one thing, but what makes you fearful is so revealing. What you are afraid of can be a powerful predictor of your personality and thus your actions. More people are said to be afraid of public speaking than

they are of dying, so comedians joke that funeral goers would prefer to be in the coffin than delivering the eulogy. Why are so many people afraid of public speaking? Psychologist, Dorothy Rowe, thinks this is a clue to our strengths. Extroverts, she says, fear rejection and isolation more than death. The prospect of being discarded or left out is their worst fear. Where’s the strength in that? The fear pushes them to work harder to compromise, create harmony and to be supportive. It encourages them to build group coherence, to keep people engaged and participating. Extroverts are the critical to our social survival. Introverts, on the other hand, are more afraid of their world and things collapsing around them. Their biggest fear is the chaos. How can that be a strength? Here the fear keeps people

striving to achieve organization and control. They work hard to bring about and keep order and predictability. Introverts keep everything working. Fear as a motivator offers us a little insight into our own behaviors, but is only one dimension of our personalities. To really use your fear to your advantage, you probably need to look across a few different dimensions. Doing so will guarantee you have a more fulfilling life. Why We Need to Keep Ensuring

Happy Birthdays for Medicare and Medicaid

By Congresswoman Joyce Beatty On July 30th, our country marked Medicare and Medicaid’s 52nd birthday— enacted as Title XVIII and Title XIX of the Social Security Act, and signed into law as part of Lyndon Johnson’s 1965 War on Poverty. For the very first time in our country, all Americans aged 65 or older were assured hospital, post-hospital extended care, and home health coverage, while states gained the option of receiving federal funding to provide health care services to low income children, their caretaker relatives, the blind, and individuals with disabilities. Over the decades, Republicans joined with Democrats on a number of bipartisan proposals to make the programs stronger, more responsive, and expanded them to include more vulnerable Americans. The

history of these successful programs should serve as a roadmap for the current 115th Congress and its consideration of healthcare in this country. Birthdays are celebrations, a time to reflect on the past and look to the future. Yet, for Medicare and Medicaid, this year is anything but a celebration. That’s because these two programs— which provide healthcare

LAPD Shooting Of Unarmed Black Man Justified, Says Panel

By Michael Balsamo LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police officers acted within department policy when they fatally shot an 18-year-old man last year, whose death sparked a series of protests across the city, the police department’s civilian oversight panel ruled. The determination from the Los Angeles Police Commission found the officers involved in the October 2016 shooting death of Carnell Snell Jr. were justified in using deadly force. But the panel faulted the tactics used by the officers. Three people were arrested after several activists began protesting at the panel’s weekly meeting. Snell was shot after officers tried to pull over a car he was in because it had paper license plates that

didn’t match the year of the vehicle. Snell jumped out and ran, and a chase followed, police said. After the shooting, activists and angry residents criticized police and dismissed the police department’s account that Snell had been armed. The outcry led the city’s police chief, Charlie Beck, to take the unusual step of publicly disclosing video showing Snell holding the gun. Los Angeles police typically release video of police shootings only after being ordered to do so by a judge. The surveillance video released by police showed Snell crouching behind an SUV parked at a strip mall and pulling a gun from the waistband of his sweatpants, but the footage failed to capture him

when officers say he twice turned toward them holding the loaded semi-automatic handgun. Officers fired three shots that missed Snell, who then climbed a fence and turned again toward the officers while holding the gun, police said. Police fired three more times, hitting Snell in the torso and knee and killing him. The union that represents Los Angeles police officers commended the oversight panel for making “the correct ruling on this justified use of force.” “When an armed suspect points a gun at a police officer, that officer must act to protect themselves and members of the public,” said Craig Lally, the president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. Congresswoman Lee, Quad Caucus Demand Removal of Steve Bannon, Sebastian Gorka and Stephen Miller from White House

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee and leadership of the Congressional Quad-Caucus – which is composed of chairs of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) – sent a letter to President Donald Trump calling for the immediate removal of Steve Bannon, Sebastian Gorka and Stephen Miller from the White House. Bannon, Gorka and Miller serve as senior advisors to the President. Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Congressional QuadCaucus leadership released the following statements upon release of the letter. Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13): “The white supremacists who descended upon Charlottesville have brought vile racism, hatred and bigotry to the forefront of our political discourse once again. We cannot address the dangerous spread of white supremacy in America without honestly examining its influence on the Oval Office. President Trump has elevated hate and discrimination to the highest levels of our government. From the Muslim Ban, to raids on immigrant communities, a ban on transgender

Americans serving in our military, attempts to revive the failed war on drugs and an all-out assault on civil and human rights, the influence of the alt-right is clear in the Trump Administration’s policy agenda. “Steve Bannon, Sebastian Gorka and Stephen Miller have long embraced the views of white supremacists, white nationalists and NeoNazis. These prejudiced ideologies have no place in the highest office in our land. I urge President Trump to remove Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Sebastian Gorka from the White House without delay.” CAPAC Chairwoman Judy Chu (CA-27): “President Trump's delayed denunciation of white supremacists and their violent actions in Charlot-

tesville, Virginia this past weekend cannot be separated from this Administration's ongoing assault on racial and religious minorities. This is not surprising, as the President has filled his inner circle with known supporters of white supremacists, including Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller, and Sebastian Gorka. Their continued presence in the White House is not only an affront to communities across this nation that were threatened and attacked by the violent protests over the weekend, but is a direct contradiction to President Trump's own delayed condemnation of white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and the KKK. Actions speak louder than words. I join my colleagues and call upon President Trump to remove these white supremacists from office, and take action to defeat hate.” CBC Chairman Cedric Richmond (LA-02): “If President Trump truly wants to start healing the country post-Charlottesville, he should fire the white supremacists working for him in the White House. Bannon, Miller, and Gorka shouldn’t be advising any president of the United States, especially on issues that affect African Americans and other marginalized groups.”

helpful in beginning to put the wheels back on the bank’s trademark stagecoach.” “For months I have been calling for a total reboot of this California-based bank with its storied history reaching back to the Gold Rush. Today, at last, we may be seeing that occurring. In April, I called for the ouster of seven members of the bank’s board of directors – John D. Baker, Lloyd H. Dean, Enrique Hernandez, Cynthia Milligan, Frederico Pena, Stephen W. Sanger and Susan G. Swenson. “Wells Fargo has announced that three of those members – Milligan, Sanger and Swenson -- will be gone in December. “But it is not enough. “The seven directors, five of whom served on its corporate responsibility committee, are the people ultimately responsible for the bank’s assets, culture, and behavior. Yet they were MIA as a parade of scandals formed on their watch. They must be held accountable for allowing greed to time and again trump integrity and for fail-

ing to protect their customers and the banking public. “Therefore, I am renewing my call for the additional directors to leave, or be replaced. The still growing list of wrongs perpetrated by the bank against consumers exposed since 2016 include: • The bank pursued a sales quota scheme that resulted in the opening of 3.5 million phony accounts in the names of customers. In July it was revealed the practice may have begun as long as a decade ago. • The bank attempted to block customers from filing lawsuits over the phony accounts, forcing them instead into arbitration citing terms of agreements they signed with the bank when they opened their actual accounts. • Also in July, news broke that as many as 800,000 consumers were forced by the bank to buy “lender-placed” car insurance they did not need, tipping a quarter of a million Wells Fargo customers into delinquency and triggering 25,000 wrongful vehicle repossessions. • Only a week ago Wells Fargo agreed to pay $108 million to settle a lawsuit that claimed it overcharged veterans under a federal mortgage refinancing program. “The record now shows that as the light of public scrutiny has grown brighter and brighter, new scandals have scurried out of the dark corners of Wells Fargo’s culture of callousness toward customers. “Until that culture is changed I will continue to call for more to be done.”

Eight-Year-Old Entrepreneur Writes Best Selling Book

Most eight-years-olds are in the third grade, and many of them are still struggling to read and write. But eight-year-old Nia Mya Reese from Birmingham, Alabama has already written a best-selling book! Nia was just in the first grade when, as a class assignment, she wrote about something she was good at -- taking care of her annoying little brother, Ronald Michael. Within two years, Nia turned this assignment into a bestseller entitled, “How To Deal With and Care For Your Annoying Little Brother.” It’s now one of the most popular kids books on Amazon, and in addition to doing book signings all over the country, she has also been featured on CBS Evening News, NBC’s Harry talk show, and in Stylist magazine. Nia’s mother encouraged

8-year-old entrepreneur and author, Nia Mya Reese

her to continue working on her story, even after the assignment was completed. Her story was so amazing because, even though she finds her little brother to be annoying, she teaches the importance of patience, love and kindness. Nia says she actually

likes being a big sister, and she hopes her book will teach other kids how they too can be a good older sibling. For more details about Nia Mya Reese, follow her on Twitter at www.twitter. com/niamyareese or buy her book on www.Amazon.com

Lady Gaga Stars in New PSA to Support Education and Inspire Positive Classrooms

(NewsUSA) - Students today face not only academic challenges, but also the emotional challenges of stress brought on by negative classroom environments, according to data from a recent survey by the Sesame Workshop. In the survey, 86 percent of teachers and 70 percent of parents reported worrying that "the world is an unkind place for children." In addition, teachers face financial challenges to making their classrooms places where students can succeed. Data from the Education Market Association show that nearly all public school teachers (99.5 percent) dip into their own money to purchase classroom supplies, and many of them spend as much as $400 per year on basic items. To help ease the burden on teachers and foster an atmosphere of kindness and tolerance in the classroom, Staples, Inc., is partnering

with music icon Lady Gaga to create a series of public service announcements. The public service campaign includes 15-, 30- and 60-second TV and radio spots in which Lady Gaga encourages positive behavior and attitudes, as well as support for students and teachers in reaching their educational goals. The PSAs also highlight two charities: DonorsChoose.org, which allows individuals to contribute to more than 25,000 classroom projects for teachers across the coun-

try; and the Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, to support and empower children, teens, and young adults. As part of its mission to support education, Staples announced donations of $1 million each to DonorsChoose.org and the Born This Way Foundation. Floyd Mayweather apologizes for using gay slur in introspective moment

Floyd Mayweather works out in front of media at his gym in Las Vegas

By Kevin Iole LAS VEGAS – Several large men milled around the door at 4020 Schiff Drive in an innocuous strip mall in the Chinatown district of this gambling mecca, watching over empty parking spaces in front reserved for the boss’ gleaming white Rolls Royce. Inside, the sweltering boxing gym was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with boxers, trainers, media, publicists and assorted hangers-on, each of them eager to get a glimpse of the impending show.

Floyd Mayweather arrived fashionably late and quickly set about the task at hand. He’s going for his 50th win in his 50th fight, a mark that would allow him to surge ahead of the legendary heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano, who retired at the peak of his powers in 1955 with a 49-0 record. He’s about to face another unbeaten boxer, though that comes with a caveat. Conor McGregor, the UFC lightweight champion, is unbeaten in the ring because he’s never boxed. Nevertheless, he will be standing across from Mayweather at about 9 p.m. PT on Aug. 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in what could be the largest-grossing fight in history. Mayweather was cool, calm and collected in answering a number of questions while holding court with the media. He was reflective, a guy who knew the end of the line was near. He’s 40 and has made his share of mistakes. He’s learned from them, he insists, and strives to be better. Off the cuff, he apologized for using a gay slur during the press tour that kicked off the promotion of the fight with McGregor, and he spoke of how he was bothered by what he perceived were racist remarks coming from McGregor. “There are certain boundaries you just don’t cross,” Mayweather said. “In the press tour when I said something toward lesbians or gays when I said something toward him. I apologized, but him calling us monkeys, you have to realize, we went through years and years of up and down. Black Americans went through a lot. But I’m a strong individual. We live and we learn and hopefully after Aug. 26, he won’t be speaking that same language.” Leonard Ellerbe, the normally cool CEO of Mayweather Promotions, was far more agitated and excited than his fighter. He railed at those who questioned that the bout is not a sellout, and he praised Mayweather’s vision and instinct for promoting. Mayweather, though, was different than he’d been at times in the past. In the past, he’s stomped around the VIP Room at the MGM Grand and lectured a reporter about the dangers of boxing and the risks of brain trauma fighters face. He spoke evenly and without a hint of anger or resentment. The only time his temper seemed to raise a little is when he was asked about meeting McGregor in New York. McGregor had gone off on Mayweather the day before at a news conference in Toronto, and Mayweather said he approached McGregor, almost as if to test him.

Aaron Donald’s holdout threatening Kyrie Irving would reportedly to last into regular season

By Zach Pereles The Los Angeles Rams welcomed Sean McVay as their new head coach this offseason, hoping he could help spearhead a new era for the team in its second year in Los Angeles. But the youngest head coach in league history has had to start that process without his best player, and it looks like things may continue that way. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald has held out of Rams training camp over contract disputes, and that holdout could continue into the regular season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. Per Schefter, one source

Aaron Donald

“speculated that he could envision Donald sitting out 2017” but admitted that “a lot can change in any negotiation in a hurry.” Generally, though, there is pessimism about a deal being done any time soon, and both sides,

while still in touch, remain far apart in their negotiations. Donald has been one of the best defensive players in the league since he was drafted three years ago out of the University of Pittsburgh. The 2014 NFL AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, Donald has amassed 28 sacks and 163 total tackles in his professional career, making the Pro Bowl each season. Few players can occupy space in the middle and rush the passer like he can. He was present at mandatory minicamp in June but hasn’t been with the team since. The Rams start their regular season Sept. 10 against Indianapolis.

sign extension with Spurs

By Kristian Winfield Any team entertaining a Kyrie Irving trade does so knowing he has two years left on his contract and can become a free agent in 2019. But according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, one team is willing to pull the trigger on a deal knowing the All-Star point guard would re-sign long term: the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs have interest in Irving, league sources say, and Irving’s willingness to commit to an extension with the Spurs makes for legitimate win-

now deal possibilities for Cleveland. Irving approached Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert for

a trade in July; he no longer wanted to play alongside LeBron James and gave ownership a list of five teams he would like to play for. That list included San Antonio. Cleveland, with new general manager Koby Altman in tow, has not been in a rush to move the All-Star guard who has been a linchpin in the franchise’s three straight NBA Finals appearances and lone championship in 2016. Irving does not hold a no-trade clause and cannot dictate his new team even if Cleveland wants to keep him.

Isaiah Thomas’ health will be the Boston Celtics top concern this season

By Joe Scirto The Boston Celtics have made an abundance of moves this offseason through trades, the draft, and free agency, but the health of Isaiah Thomas‘ hip will ultimately determine the Celtics chances against the Cleveland Cavaliers when the 2018 playoffs roll around. During Game 2 of the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas aggravated a right hip injury he originally sustained in March of the regular season. An injury that forced him to miss the rest of the series, erasing any hope the Celtics had of upsetting a heavily favored, LeBron James led, Cavaliers team. Thomas’ injury has since drawn comparisons to the one suffered by former Syracuse Orange and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Jonny Flynn. Both Thomas and Flynn are of similar stature, shorter players with exceptional athletic ability. Flynn’s injury required surgery and soon ended his professional basketball career. Although doctors have determined that Thomas does not currently need surgery, at only 5’9, his hips and lower body are essential to the deadly hesi-

tation moves he combines with elite quickness and ball handling to make up for a lack of height. A lingering hip injury could potentially be devastating to his overall game. When the 2018 playoffs near, Boston will likely be in a tight race with Cleveland for the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. Securing the top seed will be crucial in a series against Cleveland and Thomas will need to be at full-strength if the Celtics are to do so. If he is not, Boston’s chances take a significant plunge. If he is, LeBron will be faced with his greatest Eastern Conference challenge since the Miami Heat narrowly edged the Celtics out in 7 games during the 2012 Conference Finals.

Baltimore Quietly Removes Support Drops For Charter Schools Confederate Statues Overnight

A monument dedicated to the Confederate Women of Maryland lies on a flatbed trailer near the intersection of Charles St. and University Parkway after it was taken down.

By Juliet Linderman BALTIMORE — Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh has a few words of advice for leaders in other cities who might want to get rid of Confederate monuments: “Do it quietly and quickly.” On Tuesday, August 15, Pugh ordered four statues in Baltimore removed under the cover of night. In the morning, city residents awoke to empty marble

plinths. Crews began removing the city’s Confederate monuments late Tuesday and finished at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. The city also removed a statue of Marylander Roger B. Taney, the U.S. Supreme Court justice who wrote the Dred Scott decision denying citizenship to African Americans. Pugh made the decision to remove the monuments

that night in order to avoid attention. “It was important that we move quickly and quietly,” Pugh said, “and that’s what we did.” Elliott Cummings, a member of the Maryland Sons of Confederate Veterans, denounced Pugh’s “barbarism and Taliban-esque actions” in tearing down the statues. “I’m angry and very sad at the same time.” Cummings also said he doesn’t think the city followed proper protocols, which would have included getting approval from the Maryland Historical Trust to remove the monuments. John Coleman, public information officer for the Trust, said in a statement that while “the formal process of removing the monuments was not followed, due to the rapidly evolving circumstances MHT will work with the city on the relocation, restoration or preservation, etc., decided in accordance with the current easements.” BALTIMORE, See page 10A

The teacher was flown from the high school to a local hospital, where he has been in stable condition. Students that were in the school at the time were moved to the gymnasium so that they could be with their parents.

By Diannah Watson On Sunday morning, August 14, two gunmen wearing bandanas ran towards a church shooting and killing two men. In Chicago, Emmanuel Flemming and Michael Swift were killed walking up the steps of South Austin’s Friendship Baptist Church. Flemming was an usher at the church and was taking his three kids to church, who are all under the age of 10. Swift who was not a member of the church was only visiting. According to witnesses, the gunmen ran from a gas station across the street and began opening fire on the church. Flemming’s yelled for his kids to take shelter inside of the church. At that time the church was in the midst of its praise and worship when Flemming’s children came running through the doors of the church.

When the sound of the bullets could be heard, the congregation hit the floor for protection. A senior member recalling the incident remembers hearing the Fleming’s kids cry, “I want my dad!” Flemming was rushed to Stroger Hospital while Swift was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where they were pronounced dead. Rev. Reginald Bachus was shocked by the event and told the Chicago Tribune, “It’s just hard for me to believe that something like this could happen on a Sunday morning. Two young men on their way to church…I think that’s the hardest part for me to grasp.” According to officials, the gunmen got away in a silver or gray SUV and headed South. The Chicago Police Department is diligently working to find and arrest the two gunmen according to Deputy Chief Al Nagode.

Father Killed Protecting His Kids

By Maria Danilova WASHINGTON — Expanding charter schools around the country is losing support among Americans, even as President Donald Trump and his administration continue to push for school choice, according to a survey released. Trump campaigned on a promise to dramatically improve school choice — charter schools and private school voucher programs — and his Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has made it a priority. But so far the message does not appear to have hit home with the public. About 39 percent of respondents favor opening more charters — schools that are funded by public money, but usually operated independently of school districts — according to the survey by Education Next, a journal published by Harvard’s Kennedy School and Stanford University. That’s down from 51 percent last year. Supporters of charter schools had feared that

Trump’s polarizing rhetoric could hurt the schoolchoice movement. But the authors of the report say the decline in support for charters can’t be linked directly to Trump. They say support for charters slipped almost equally across party lines: by 11 percent among Democrats and by 13 percent among Republicans. They also emphasize that private school vouchers and voucher-type programs, championed by Trump, have seen stable support and declining opposition. Finally, when respondents were told that Trump was advocating for charter schools, overall support increased by 6 percentage points. “We can’t say definitively what is responsible for the decline,” said Martin West, associate professor of education at Harvard University and a co-author of the report. West speculated that the drop may have been caused by continued opposition from teachers unions and many

Democrats plus debates over charters’ effectiveness. “These developments may have led to a souring of the charter brand,” West said. Meanwhile, opposition to publicly funded vouchers that help parents pay private school tuition dropped from 44 percent last year to 37 percent; 45 percent of respondents currently favor the idea. When it comes to tax credit-funded scholarships, resistance fell from 29 percent to 24 percent, while support was at 54 percent now. To others, the Trump effect is more apparent. On the campaign trail, Trump spoke of funding a $20 billion school choice program and has proposed major cuts to long-standing K-12 programs, such as teacher preparation and after-school classes, while requesting more funding for charters and vouchers. DeVos has faced criticism from the left for promoting solely school choice and paying little attention to public schools.

How Continuous Learning Helps Aging Seniors

Why are doctors and lawyers made to go out and get continuing education credits? It keeps them sharp, exposes them to new ideas, and keeps them growing and progressing in their fields. This doesn’t only work for folks with jobs that need expensive degrees. Everyone benefits from continuing their education throughout their life. Making education and mentally challenging activities a regular part of your routine significantly lowers your risk of dementia later in life. Continuous Learning Outside of A Classroom: Get A Hobby One of the easiest ways to continue stimulating your brain is learning new skills and starting new hobbies. Scientists used to think that doing simple crossword puzzles or listening to classical music in the evening would greatly benefit the brain. New studies have been showing learning how to do something new is even better. Now, your new hobby

doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. It should challenge you though. Try something like counted cross-stitch which uses different parts of the brain at the same time. The fine needlework not only needs focused concentration but logical reasoning while you count, plus the beautiful results light up the brain’s pleasure centers. Even something as simple as puzzle building can be complex enough to start encouraging cell growth. Not good with your hands? Take up photography or start going to acting classes. The arts engage the whole brain, not only different levels memory but highlevel cognitive centers, so they are the most beneficial. Using the Latest Technology to Your Benefit: Learn How to Use a New Piece of Tech Another amazing way to keep your neurons firing is learning new technology. While it can be scary to learn how to use something new, it’s super great for your brain.

Technology doesn’t just give you a new learning challenge. Getting the newest smartphone or tablet gives you unlimited access and connection to your loved ones. What If Dementia Has Already Begun? Even if you or a loved one are in the beginning stages of dementia these strategies can still help. Focusing on engaging activities for the brain is a great place to start for continuous learning. Even cooking and basic household cleaning can help an aging brain. These activities require many levels of brain activity to be successful. Encourage whoever is suffering to do all they can. If you find yourself struggling with taking care of someone who has dementia, or simply want some techniques to cope better with aging yourself, don’t be afraid to reach out to a professional for help. A counselor specialized in aging and seniors consulting is even better!

changed. Lack of exercise People with older age tend to have a sedentary lifestyle. Such people either experience less sleep or are sleepier throughout the day. So it would be better to have an exercise routine or do aerobics to promote good sleep. Stress People experience stress for a number of reasons like death of a loved one, retirement, change in lifestyle, etc. Adding meditation to your routine or talking to someone face-to-face helps. Less social engagement People who have less social engagement do have trouble falling in sleep. So it becomes important to meet people by joining senior’s group or joining some classes. Now what? Bringing about some changes in lifestyle can help to have better sleep. You can make simple changes by not using mobile and other devices at night, using your bedroom for activities other than sex and sleep, keeping the clock away so you can’t hear it ticking, etc. Eating and exercising right can help too. If you have persistent issues we suggest consulting a doctor.

What’s Worse Than Obesity? Tips for Better Sleep as you Age Experts Say Loneliness

By Ruthie Hawkins A new study suggests that loneliness could become an even bigger public health threat than obesity. According to an AARP’s Loneliness Study, presented at the 2017 annual convention of the American Psychological Association, people have felt increasingly lonely and isolated in recent years. The physical and psychological ramifications could prove more detrimental than the effects of obesity. “There is robust evidence that social isolation and loneliness significantly increase risk for premature mortality, and the magnitude of the risk exceeds that of many leading health indicators,” said Ju-

lianne Holt-Lunstad, PhD, professor of psychology at Brigham Young University and lead author of the study, in a press release. The study, consisting of two meta-analyses of previous data covering 218 studies, discovered that social

isolation, including living alone, caused the risk of premature death to surge. Shockingly, the findings indicated a greater impact on dying early than obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 40 percent of adults age 20 and over are obese. While, children age 12-19 pose the greatest risk of obesity, at just over 20 percent. How to Combat Loneliness So, how does one combat loneliness? The answer could be as simple as visiting your local recreation center, the study states. Additionally, people should prepare for retirement socially as well as financially, as many social ties are related to the workplace, HoltLunstad noted. She added community planners should make sure to include shared social spaces that encourage gathering and interaction, such as recreation centers and community gardens. Other ways to get up, get out, and interact include: Get help: Understand that loneliness is a feeling and not a fact. Because it can be painful, plugging into care, rather than withdrawing from others is a first step. Try a hobby: You are not alone. Love hiking, biking, running, even knitting? Identify and join groups with common interests – a natural basis for the beginning of a friendship. Volunteer: Everyone has a passion. Find a way to lend your time with a movement or organization that aligns with what makes you tick.

Shonda Rhimes Moves From ABC To Netflix

By Tonya Pendleton Shonda Rhimes is on her way to become the most powerful woman in TV, if she’s not already, although a woman named Oprah might have her beat a little. Rhimes, the woman behind the ABC hit shows Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder has just left her longtime deal with ABC Studios and signed on to Netflix in what is another sign of the increasingly fragility of broadcast network television. Via The Hollywood Reporter: In a testament to the competition for talent, prolific showrunner Shonda Rhimes — the hit maker behind ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and more — has jumped ship from ABC Studios to Netflix. Under the multipleyear deal, Rhimes and her Shondaland banner will create and produce new projects for the streaming giant. Rhimes’ longtime producing partner Betsy Beers will continue to head Shondaland in the move to Netflix. Under what is said to be a rich four-year pact, Rhimes is expected to score a percentage of the back-end on programming she creates for Netflix. “Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television,” Netflix chief content officer

Shonda Rhimes

Ted Sarandos said. “Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I’ve gotten the chance to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart — she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We’re so excited to welcome her to Netflix.” The move further aligns Rhimes with Netflix, which has featured the Grey’s Anatomy library that has helped elevate the veteran ABC

medical soap to become the network’s most-watched drama — a rare feat for a show in its 13th season. The series heads into season 14 in the fall as it sets its sights on being the longest-running medical drama on television alongside ER. ABC will continue to remain home to Grey’s Anatomy and its upcoming spinoff as well as Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder as well as the forthcoming drama For the People. Rhimes had been with ABC Studios for 15 years.

They took a picture in the Oval Office and then they did nothing,” said Richmond. “If you look at President Trump’s budget, he has a number of actions in it that actually hurt HBCUs.” White House Communications Director for the Office of Public Liaison, Omarosa Manigault is organizing the annual HBCU conference scheduled for September 17-19, 2017, in Washington, D.C. “He still has a [HBCU] commission, he still hasn’t named anyone to,” said Richmond. “Omarosa is still pretending to have influence with this president. I’m just surprised that she’s still there as an African American woman after his latest comments.” Richmond said that he wouldn’t be surprised, if many of the HBCU presidents declined to show up for the annual event. “If they postpone it, great. If they cancel it, great,” said Richmond. “What I’d rather see, besides a conference and a fly-in day, is some substantive policies to help these schools with their scholarships, with their campuses, with their infrastructure.” Richmond continued: “I don’t think you need a conference in [Washington, D.C.] to do that. This White House is not serious about improving our HBCUs, our institutions of advancement.” Lauren Victoria Burke is the White House Correspondent for NNPA Newswire. And now I’m about to go back, knowing what I know, and we’re about to rev that machine up. And rev it up we will do.” He also told the magazine that he could be more effective without the constraints of the White House. “I can fight better on the outside,” Bannon said. “I can’t fight too many Democrats on the inside like I can on the outside.” In a statement about Bannon’s dismissal, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.) said that Bannon needed to go, but so do other White supremacists working in the Trump Administration. “Firing Steve Bannon is not enough, because the issue of him working in the White House has never only been about him,” said Richmond. “It’s also been about the racist and discriminatory policies he’s helped draft and implement which hurt African Americans.” The CBC released “A Top Ten List of the Trump Administration’s Racist and Discriminatory Poli-

FRIDAY

cies.” The list included: 1. Voter Suppression Commission 2. Supporting Texas’ Discriminatory Voter ID Law 3. Reinstating the War on Drugs 4. Attacking Affirmative Action at Colleges and Universities 5. Rolling Back Consent Decrees that Keep Police Accountable 6. Muslim Ban 7. Mass Deportation 8. Rolling Back Civil Rights Enforcement Across Federal Agencies 9. Reinstating the Use of Private Prisons 10. Refusing to Protect Americans and the Nation from White Supremacists In a separate statement on Bannon’s removal, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) called the ousted Breitbart chief the standardbearer for the worst instincts in American society. “Whether Bannon personally trades in violence, racism, and bigotry, he allowed Brietbart, his media organization, to become a platform for White nationalism, misogyny, anti-Semitism, and antiimmigrant sentiment of the worst kind,” said Conyers. Although Conyers said that he was pleased that Bannon was no longer serving in the White House, he added that Bannon’s removal will not undo the damage that has already been done and it will not reconcile the hate-filled agenda of the Trump Administration. “President Donald Trump has shown us his true colors,” said Conyers. “He sided with unAmerican White supremacists, neo-Nazis, and all those who give racism and hatred a voice. Trump’s failure to reflect on his dangerous rhetoric continues to embolden these groups and ideals.” Civil rights leaders also voiced their support of Bannon’s exit. Kristen Clarke, the president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law said that Bannon was the driving force behind the racial turmoil that threatens to tear this country apart. “Such a divisive figure has no place in the White House,” Clarke said in the statement. Vanita Gupta, the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said that Bannon’s departure was the right result, but not for the right reason. “The president, who continues to sow hate and division, clearly did not fire Bannon because of his White supremacist views and ties to the so-called ‘alt-right,’” said Gupta. “Someone like Bannon should have never worked in the White House to begin with.” Gupta continued: “President Trump must address the deep wounds he has created by ridding his administration of Sebastian Gorka, Stephen Miller, and any other staffers who stoke bigotry, hate, and division. Unless and until the president calls out evil; disavows neo-Nazis, White nationalists, and White supremacists; fires these staffers; and abandons his administration’s anti-civil rights agenda, he will continue to have no moral credibility.” White House insiders have claimed that Bannon submitted his resignation letter earlier this month, but the announcement was delayed, because of the violent White supremacists’ rally in Charlottesville, Va., that left one dead and 19 injured. Since July 21, four senior staffers have departed the White House; Press Secretary Sean Spicer, Chief of Staff Reince Preibus, and Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci. Derrick Johnson, the interim president and CEO of the NAACP, said that the group was glad to see Bannon out of the White House. “Ousting one key staffer, however, can’t erase the words used by President Trump this week in defense of domestic terrorists, neoNazis and White supremacists,” said Johnson, in the statement about Bannon’s dismissal. “President Trump provided permission for these hate groups to exist. Following the tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia, numerous other rallies and White supremacist groups are being mobilized across the country. Johnson continued:” These groups are not rallying for peace, or for the preservation of Confederate memorabilia. They exist purely to foment hatred and violence. And they march with the president’s blessing.” Lauren Victoria Burke is the White House Correspondent for NNPA and a writer and political analyst. Jail, and Penal Code 182 – Conspiracy to Commit a Crime. The case was submitted to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office and after several months of litigation, all suspects pleaded guilty to PC 4573 and were sentenced to various lengths of time in county jail as well as (36) months of formal probation. Bringing drugs into a custodial facility is an issue that the Pre-Trial Detention Facility combats on a daily basis. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office works diligently to prevent drugs from entering into the jails. Deputies make an effort to arrest individuals for these types of offenses and hold them responsible for their actions. GREGORY From page 1A and that wasn’t it either. PEOPLE From page 2A matter where I am, I can turn it into my office. When he arrived one hour late, I asked him if he’s the kind of friend that if I left my wallet sitting on the table with money in it would he take my money out of my wallet? He answered of course not. I asked why not? He said because first of all, I’m not that kind of person and I know how important money is to people. I looked him straight in the eyes. I asked why would you take an hour of my time then? I’ve been waiting here for one hour and you never called to say you would be late. I will never get that time back and time means more to me than money. I then told him I will not meet and have coffee with him again until he could do better with keeping his word about his time. Needless to say he apologized and said it wouldn’t happen again. We meet regularly now. Not only is he not ever late but he’s early. Why? Because I trained him how to treat me when it comes to my time. You can’t be afraid to speak up for yourself in a loving kind way but you must be firm. Of course there are times when it’s unavoidable: emergencies, etc. I’m not talking about those times, I’m talking about the times people deliberately take advantage of you because you allow them. That’s called people pleasing. Take your life back people will love you more when you love you more. Hopefully your group got a “cool” parent who would let you get away with stuff like buying an ice cream instead of eating what was packed in your brown bag lunch. A field trip is an ordinary day made extraordinary because we choose to make it happen. We make a plan to have fun. It’s a decision we make to step out of the day to day and create a different experience. A “permission slip” is still necessary but now you are the one in control. You can board any damn bus that you want and you can take it wherever you want to go. But you have to grant yourself permission first. A few weeks ago, I gave myself permission and took a field trip to Santa Cruz Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park, an amazing Galapagos just off shore of the gold coast of California. My friend Susan was planning a trip from Chicago and we had discussed this adventure during one of her previous visits. Everything was aligned for now. I invited another friend, Amy, to join us. She shares a love of the sea and was in need of such a field trip. She said “Yes,” the magic word. Our field trip was magical. A very brisk wind was howling when we first set out from Ventura Harbor aboard our bus - Island Packers’ ferry. The sea was a bit choppy from the wind waves but we had sunny, clear skies and warm temperatures. During the crossing, we were visited by hundreds of dolphins who played in the wake alongside the boat. Squeals of humans and dolphins delight filled the air. As we approached Scorpion anchorage, we were met with more than a dozen whales… amazing, gigantic, graceful blues, grays and humpbacks. Wow! I’ve sailed this channel for more than 20 years and although I have been blessed with many whale sightings, this was awesome! Upon disembarking the vessel, we were given instructions about when to return to dock. We

were warned of the dangers, reminded of the remoteness and the distance from any medical facility, and strongly cautioned about the lack of drinking water available. We were told of the presence of the hanta virus and rodents and to stay away from the foxes and not to feed any animals. When released from orientation, we took a short walk where we feasted on our deluxe picnic lunch in the shade of a eucalyptus grove. From there we began a hike (moderate to strenuous by park standards) which brought us up a very steep trail. Trusting that we would be rewarded with a scenic view at the top, we trudged our way up. It was 88 degrees and very sunny and we whined a bit. When we reached a place where there was no longer a climb in elevation, we were still far from any view of the ocean but we knew it must be just ahead. And then the reward… After our hike, we made our way to the beach where we nestled ourselves in the cool shadows of an open cave carved into the cliff on the rocky shore. We planted ourselves on the smooth boulders and sat there with our feet in the sand while the waves splashed over them. We gazed at the mainland and the civilization which seemed so very very far away from this wild island. We reveled in the now moment of the experience. And we congratulated ourselves for making the time to do it. On our return crossing, we were again greeted by a massive congregation of dolphins as a fine ending to the day. Do you remember that summertime childhood feeling you would get when you had been outside in the sun playing all day long? A little sleepy. Content. Your mind full of happy. Summer’s here. I encourage you to make the choice to plan a field trip. Take a day and make it fun. Discover the child again. What are you waiting for? Tick tock. Time is passing. Give yourself permission. Now. MEDICARE From page 2A repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with the American Health Care Act (AHCA), also known as “Trumpcare,” over 50 million seniors on Medicare and at least 70 million more Americans on Medicaid—including 30 million children, 20 million hardworking Americans struggling to simply make ends meet, 10 million people with disabilities and another 10 million vulnerable seniors— may lose access to the medical care they need. This means pregnant women lacking pre- and postnatal care, children unable to see their doctor, and countless seniors and Americans with disabilities unable to afford their prescriptions or the needed support services to live independently. Trumpcare would also end the ACA’s Medicaid expansion, a move that would hurt nearly one million Ohioans, and take away healthcare coverage from at least 22 million newlyinsured Americans. Even worse, Trumpcare jeopardizes coverage for 129 million Americans with pre-existing conditions including 10 million people with disabilities on Medicaid and imposes an age tax that would force older Americans to pay at least five times as much for their health insurance as younger people regardless of their health status. That is why Democrats are fighting Congressional Republicans’ dizzying attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and ram through Trumpcare and its dangerous $750 billion cut to Medicaid. These cuts would devastate our social compact with those who can least afford it by gutting the program that one in three seniors will eventually need for long-term health-related services. Today in America, 42 million people live in households with incomes below the poverty line—over 14 million are children, 10 million are working adults and some 4 million are people with disabilities. These statistics demand action, and Democrats are answering the call. Democrats are very clear in our message and response: “Better Wages, Better Jobs, and a Better Future” and “A Better Deal for all Americans.” Congress can help make this happen by passing the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, H.R. 676. Introduced by the Dean of the U.S. House of Representatives and founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Congressman John Conyers (MI-13), H.R. 676 would expand Medicare, guaranteeing that every American—no matter where they live or what they earn—can visit the doctor, go to the emergency room, purchase their prescriptions, and access long-term care and mental health. The CBC, also known as the “Conscience of Congress,” is fighting alongside our Democratic colleagues to standup for these hardworking Americans to ensure their fears, including those of three million Ohioans on Medicaid, do not become reality. That people are not making untenable choices about whether to eat, go to the doctor or fill a prescription. Our effort to beat back Trumpcare—working with countless men, women and children from

across the country and political spectrum—is still ongoing. That is why, to borrow a line from the CBC, we must “Stay Woke.” We cannot rest nor stay silent until every American family, senior, child, person with disabilities, and adult has the healthcare they need and deserve. The ACA was an important first step, but no one has ever claimed that it is the end-all when it comes to the healthcare debate in this country. However, the false and misleading claims we hear from Republicans do nothing to advance a sensible debate. Instead of continuing to sow seeds of uncertainty and cut funding from Medicare and Medicaid—all to pay for a huge tax cut for the 400 wealthiest families in America— Republicans need to abandon their obsession with repealing the ACA and finally get serious about working with Democrats to improve and strengthen the healthcare marketplace. In so doing, we can ensure that Medicare and Medicaid will continue to have very happy birthdays. A reality millions of Americans would celebrate. Happy Birthday Medicare and Medicaid! LAPD From page 4A The shooting set off a series of Black Lives Matter protests across the city, including at the home of Mayor Eric Garcetti. Activists routinely mention Snell’s death at weekly police commission meetings as they decry police misconduct. Three people who protested at the police commission meeting were arrested on suspicion of obstructing a public officer, said Officer Drake Madison, a police spokesman. After protesters refused to sit down and chanted during the meeting, the commissioners left the room and police ordered everyone out of the meeting. Several people refused to leave and a video posted on Twitter showed officers handcuffing Melina Abdullah, a Black Lives Matter organizer and professor at California State University, Los Angeles, and leading her out of the room. Police said they could not immediately provide the names of those arrested. BURGLARIES From page 13A act on impulse, so keep your stuff out of sight – either with you or in a locked trunk. Don’t count on the glove box; thieves know to look there, and they’re easy to break into. 5. Hide your valuables, part II. If you have a wagon or SUV that leaves your cargo area open, get a retractable fitted cover to keep shopping bags or other belongings hidden. 6. Don’t hand a thief your keys. Take you keys with you. And if you think you have a great hid-

ing place for a spare key, car breakin thieves know to look above the visor, in the center console, under the floor mat, in the trunk well etc. 7. Stow your stuff before arrival. Experienced thieves often stake out parking lots to watch for people putting items in their trunk. Help prevent car break-ins by putting valuables like laptops, messenger bags, and electronic devices into your trunk before you get to the parking lot. 8. Stash the evidence. After you’ve put your stuff in the trunk, don’t forget such telltale evidence as power plugs, MP3 adapters, and navigation system windshield suction-cup mounts. Thieves know what they’re looking for, so hide the electronic accessories, too. 9. Trust your instincts. If you see suspicious activity, find another spot to park. If you’re concerned report your suspicions to the Ventura Police Department at 805650-8010. You may be helping keep another person from being a victim of a car break-in or worse. 10. Take it one more step. Many vehicles are broken into with the intent of stealing the vehicle itself. Visible anti-theft devices, like steering wheel locks, steering column collars, or brake pedal locks may discourage the would-be thief from breaking in and trying. News from the VC Sheriff’s Depart. On August 10, Camarillo Patrol deputies were dispatched to a suspicious subject call at Adolfo Gas in Camarillo. Deputies arrived and after their investigation, arrested 3 suspects for placing credit card skimmers in gas pumps at the location. Adolfo Gas was recently purchased by a new owner. After purchasing the business, the owner made several improvements to better serve and protect his customers. One improvement was the installation of a state of the art video surveillance system. On August 10, the business owner was watching his surveillance camera feed remotely and observed three male subjects at his business, which was closed. The owner saw the subjects tampering with the fuel pumps. The owner believed the subjects were placing credit card skimmers at the location and immediately contacted Ventura County Sheriff's Dispatch and reported the incident. Deputies from the Camarillo Police Department arrived on scene within approximately two minutes and detained the subjects. Through their investigation, deputies were able to determine that the gas pumps at the location had been tampered with. Camarillo Police Detectives responded to assist in the investigation. Detectives located and recovered credit card skimming devices that had been placed inside the gas pumps by the subjects. A search of the subjects and their vehicle yielded additional evidence linking them to the placement of credit card skimming devices. Deputies contacted surrounding gas stations in the area and checked for any evidence of tampering. Adis Poghosyan, Tigran Ghazaryan, Adels Torosyan were all arrested without incident. All three suspects were booked into the Ventura County Main Jail and charged with 530.5 PC (Identity Theft), 182 PC (Conspiracy), 502.6 PC (Use of Scanning Device to Commit Fraud), and 136 PC (Dissuading a Witness). The Camarillo Police Department would like the community to know that we have an anti ‘skimmer’ program in place and regularly check credit card devices throughout the city. If you notice something strange about a device you are using, contact us immediately at (805) 654-9511.

The People’s Throb

Donald Trump lost California’s vote by about half. After being in office for eight months, how do you think Californians view our new president’s progress? By Gary L. Harbour glharbour@yahoo.com www.theanointedeye.com

“Thinking Californians have fear, some justified, some not justified. Has hate and anger been around before Trump? I think yes. I didn’t vote for him, but surely think he can’t be at the crux of all the problems that our nation faces today.”

“He was placed by voters that wanted a change and placed by God. People are tired of the U.S. outsourcing businesses to other countries.”

“I don’t think Californians believe that he has made good progress.”

“I think California believes that he has done good on jobs, but not morally.”

“I think most Californians believe he has made a mess.”

“Californians see him as a president who is being disrespectful to the Office of the U.S. Presidency. However, he is better than what we expected and is taking brave steps.”

Ventura PD provides car break-in prevention tips Courtesy of the Ventura Police Department There were 22 vehicle related burglaries in the past 7 days in the City of Ventura. There were 12 vehicle break ins, 6 thefts from unlocked vehicles and 4 stolen vehicles. Please review important prevention tips to help protect yourself

from becoming a victim! 10 Tips for Preventing Car Break-ins 1. Keep your car visible. Park in well-lit areas. Avoid having your car concealed by larger vehicles; thieves like to work in private. 2. Don’t make it easy. Keep windows and sunroofs closed and doors locked. Almost one-fourth

of thefts from vehicles are from unlocked cars. 3. Activate your vehicle’s alarm. Don’t have one? Factory-installed antitheft systems are best, but a professionally-installed alarm can discourage a car break-in thief who likes to work in silence. 4. Hide your valuables. Simi Valley man sentenced to 11 years for inflicting corporal injury on spouse, child endangerment

Superior Court Judge Michael Lief sentenced Jeffrey Michael Lindquist (DOB 05/04/1971), of Simi Valley, to 11 years in prison for inflicting corporal injury on his spouse, inflicting great bodily injury, dissuading a witness, and child endangerment. Lindquist was also ordered to pay $66,243 in restitution. Lindquist received the maximum sentence possible under the law. On March 28, 2015, at approximately 12:00 a.m., officers of the Simi Valley Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance in the Long Canyon Road

area of Simi Valley. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim in the street surrounded by neighbors. Further investigation by Simi Valley Police officers revealed the victim had retreated into a bedroom after an argument with Lindquist. Lindquist broke down the door, injuring the victim. He then repeatedly punched the victim in the face, causing severe injuries that required surgery. When the victim attempted to call 911, Lindquist destroyed her phone and forcibly removed the victim’s eight-year-old son from the home, causing

minor injury to the child. Additional investigation by the District Attorney Bureau of Investigation revealed Lindquist had abused two prior spouses in Michigan and California. On July 24, 2017, a jury convicted Lindquist of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, dissuading a witness from reporting a crime, and child endangerment. The jury also found that Lindquist had personally inflicted great bodily injury. Follow the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office on Twitter @VenturaDAOffice

Los Carneros Rd., Goleta, CA. The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 055831-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. FAIR From page 1B food offerings like Deep Fried Pineapple and Belgian Waffles on a Stick pleased the taste for new summer treats while the mini donuts and turkey legs satisfied the cravings of fairgoers. Total attendance for 2017 was 305,746; off from 2016’s record attendance of 332,262. “We do everything we can to bring Ventura County a better fair every year,” said CEO Barbara Quaid, sharing the fair’s winning formula; “For us the focus is not about the numbers of people coming through the gates, but about the quality of the experience our guests have at the fair. We measure our success by the number of smiles on the faces of the fairgoers. We are committed to offering a clean, safe and fun experience that people will remember forever.” As is the case every year, overall success would not be possible without the tremendous support of the sponsors and the community. While the gates have closed on the 2017 Ventura County Fair, planning is already underway for the 2018 fair. The Ventura County Fairgrounds consists of a 62.5acre parcel and operates as a multi-purpose, multi-functional, year-round facility accommodating a variety of events. Regarded as a premier rental facility, the Ventura County Fairgrounds and Event Center attracts some of the most popular shows and attractions in the county throughout the year, including livestock shows, dog shows, horse shows, home and recreation shows, concerts, dances, business expos, weddings, quinceañeras and receptions, motorcycle and automobile shows, camping groups, swap meets and much more. The Ventura County Fair entertained thousands of guests and participants. It employs up to 700 seasonal staff during the annual 12-day event. With annual attendance of over 300,000 visitors to the fair, the communities throughout Ventura County share in the economic vitality derived from the Ventura County Fair. The fair brings economic, social, educational, and cultural resources and provides lasting impressions on fairgoers. While agriculture is the heart of the fair, it’s the diverse entertainment that typically draws fairgoers through the gates. Known for free top name concerts, we take pride in the overall dynamics and diversity of the entertainment, the esthetics and cleanliness of the grounds, as well as the vast educational and innovative exhibits that are showcased throughout the fair each year.
