Welcome to EBCOG 2012, 9-12 May, Tallinn, Estonia The 2012 European international Congress for obstetricians and gynaecologists will be held in May in wonderful Tallinn, Estonia. The Scientific Programme Committee has been working diligently and has compiled an exciting scientific programme that includes sessions arranged by all major European specialist societies. Hands-on training and courses have long been key elements in EBCOG Congresses and they will be even more prominent in 2012. On each Congress day morning sessions will be devoted to hands-on training and courses. Later in the day there will be plenaries and keynote lectures by the greatest authorities in Europe; and exciting original research will be presented, either as oral presentations or as e-posters. For the e-posters there will be poster discussion sessions like in Antwerpen, where they were much appreciated in the evaluations. In order to facilitate Congress participation and accommodate delegate´s wishes to tailor individual schedules, the Congress Management Committee has reduced all Congress registration fees and combined this with the introduction of a fee for training and courses. This concept has worked well in other organizations; we are looking forward to seeing it work for EBCOG in Tallinn. The conference centre is state-of-the-art, all electronic, and internet is free and universally available - like everywhere else in modern Estonia. Tallinn is European Culture Capital in 2011 and the music and culture outpour will continue into 2012. Tallinn is a beautiful and very lively city and the visit will be first for many of us. Please come and join us for the 2012 EBCOG Congress 9-12 May in Estonia – Europe but still exotic.

Helle Karro President of the Estonian Gynaecologist´s Society

Peter Hornnes President of EBCOG

17 CALL FOR PAPERS The Congress Scientific Committee welcomes the submission of abstracts for oral communication, poster and video presentation. Please submit your abstract via www.EBCOG2012.com.

Deadline for abstract submission: 31 December 2011 The submitted abstracts will be peer reviewed by at least 3 referees. This will result in 3 categories of accepted papers: The first category will consist of the top 8 quality abstracts, which will be presented in plenary sessions. The second group of abstracts will be allocated in parallel slots, and finally the majority of accepted abstracts will be invited as e-posters. E-posters: As at the last Congress, EBCOG 2012 will use e-posters. This is because of EBCOG’s efforts to revalue the concept of the scientific poster and at the same time reduce the pressure on the environment of having to produce paper-based scientific posters. The e-poster concept consists of PowerPoint presentations a maximum of 10 slides produced by the author. The e-poster environment consists of a number of workstations where the e-posters can be viewed by the participants during the Congress.

Topics for submissions: General gynaecology Gynaecological oncology Urogynaecology Genital prolapse Contraception Gynaecological endocrinology Reproductive gynaecology Endoscopy Endoscopic surgery Robotics Imaging in gynaecology Miscarriage Abortion Infectious diseases Reduction of C-section rates General obstetrics Hypertensive disorder in pregnancy Endocrine disorder in pregnancy Obesity and pregnancy Prenatal diagnosis

The KU Leuven André Van Assche Award The KU Leuven André Van Assche Award is a prestigious prize named after one of EBCOG’s founding fathers, Prof. André Van Assche, and it is generously supported by the Katholieke Universiteit (KU) Leuven, Belgium. KU Leuven is proud to support a prize to honour the best oral presentation made by a trainee at the EBCOG European Congress for five consecutive Congresses. It is an award which is unique to EBCOG and which, we are proud to say, celebrates our role as the voice of obstetricians and gynaecologists in Europe as well as confirming the importance of the European Congress to EBCOG, especially in terms of our goal of supporting the next generation of specialists in our field. The prize of €1,000 and a certificate was first awarded at the European Congress in Torino in 2006 and we are delighted to confirm that the winner of the best oral presentation in 2012 will be announced during the closing ceremony of the European Congress in Tallinn.

City of Tallinn Tallinn – a city that was mentioned on a map by an Arabian geographer Al-Idrisi in 1154 - being the capital of one of the smallest countries in Europe is a proud host of the next EBCOG Congress. In this city you can forget all logistical challenges: the airport is a 10-minute drive from the city centre, the Congress venue is located in the very heart of the city with all hotels being at the distance of a maximum 10-minute walk. The world famous and UNESCO-protected Old Town is 300 metres from the Nokia Concert House – the Congress site. Middle Ages still breathe in this Hanseatic Town as soon as you set your foot on its narrow streets and alleys filled with aromas rising from the Mediaeval restaurants and cafes. Estonia is known for its song festivals and love of music. We can certainly promise you musical surprises in the white spring nights. But surprises will not be disclosed before you are there to experience them in person. The Congress dinner will be held in the Kadriorg Palace that Peter I built for his wife Catherine. We will take a trip back in history and, be prepared to be honorary guests at the court of Tsarina Catherine. Estonia as a country is not rich in oil, gas, coal or any precious metals. Our wealth lies in our culture and nature, both of which you will be able to enjoy during the pre- and post-tours. Should you wish to see the Orthodox culture from the 17th century before Peter I reformed it, you will be very welcome to the Old Believers’ villages at the Lake Peipsi. If you are interested in fenno-ugric tribal traditions, you will certainly meet them in South-East

Estonia. If you fancy the long-lost Vikings, Estonian islands with their ancient settlements might wet your appetite. On top of all the afore-mentioned, you will be more than welcome at numerous golf clubs around the country, or you can visit the Northern Riviera Pärnu with its relaxing spas. Do not forget that it is a country where one can reach the farthest point from the capital Tallinn by car in less than 4 hours. You will discover the magic of white nights when no one really sleeps...

Climate Estonia lies in the northern part of the temperate climate zone and in the transition zone between maritime and continental climate. Because Estonia (and all of Northern Europe) is continuously warmed by maritime air influenced by the heat content of the northern Atlantic Ocean, it has a milder climate despite its northern latitude. The Baltic Sea causes differences between the climate of coastal and inland areas. Estonia has four seasons of near-equal length. Average temperatures range from 16.3 °C on the Baltic islands to 18.1 °C inland in July, the warmest month, and from −3.5 °C on the Baltic islands to −7.6 °C inland in February, the coldest month. The weather in May is usually nice and sunny with day temperatures rising up to 20°C, while night can still be chilly, though the long hours of light make you forget the lower temperature. Occasional rain showers that “bring May flowers” can be expected.

Dress Dress will be informal throughout the Congress

Electrical supply Electricity is supplied at 220/240 volts. Some hotels provide 110 volts AC sockets for electric razors only. For all other equipment an adaptor/converter is necessary.
