I am so happy that you’re reading this text, because I was so very happy to write it. And I was so for many reasons. First of all, this magazine is the proof of our 2 year anniversary. It has been an amazing journey, being able to bring wonderful products to all of our thousands of customers and, by doing so, supporting our many independent designers. Secondly, it has been a dream of mine to create a magazine for some time. A magazine packed with inspiration and a taste of all amazing stories I get to hear working with our designers. They are stories of passion, dedication, love and creativity. We’ve also worked hard to make it an all clickable magazine. Most products are tagged and bringing you to the product on our site, ready for order, when you click on them. Thank you for our first two years. This is our gift to you. Our very first issue of the magazine.

Meet the designer:
POP
Per Nilsson is the man behind the brand POP, an engineer based in Norrköping and with a passion for design and beautiful things. With his first products, he moves the heart of every typography lover out there when he’s putting the spotlight on three of our most loved type faces. Tell us about your background! I grew up in Norrköping, and got interested in technology early on. I was always building stuff and were picky with details. I didn’t do much drawing and it wasn’t until I started working on computers I could get the design in my head on paper. I love being able to mix technology and design. When I finished high school, I moved to Luleå in the north of Sweden to study Engineering focusing on product development and design. I loved the creative environment and meeting people with the same interests as me.
Where do you find your inspiration? I find my inspiration everywhere (such a cliche, I know…). Lately I’ve found my self focusing on a specific manufacturing technique and thinking about how to use it to create new products, like lasercut steel and bamboo. And of course old technical stuff inspires me, I’m a sucker for industrial machines and old HiFi-products! Do you have a dream projects? It would be a dream to design a classic of some sorts. We have a long tradition of timeless and sustainable design in the Nordics, and I want to be a part of keeping that tradition alive.

Stylish art prints
BY THE EYES OF AN ENGLISHMAN
Will Taylor is “a young chap from the UK unashamedly hooked on hue” as he describes himself. He is the man behind one of UK top interior blogs Bright Bazaar and is just releasing his very first book. He recently found his way to Nordic Design Collective, and was kind enough to let us share his favourites from our site. Text: Will Taylor.

Last week I was on the hunt for a small typographic print to place on my living room sideboard when I discovered a knockout online source for affordable (and super stylish) art prints called Nordic Design Collective. After pouring over the site’s offering of over 1,000 art prints, I decided to order the “This Poster Could Say Whatever” print because it fitted my original plan for something typographic, as well as matching the black accents in my living room. I think it coordinates perfectly with the striped Kahler candlesticks, in
addition to reminding me of the episode of Will & Grace where Jack is talking about his CV which he has already planned to have printed in Helvetica! I’m feeling very drawn to the atmospheric Swedish landscape prints by Dan Isaac Wallin, who takes shots with a polaroid camera and doesn’t manipulate them digitally at all - aren’t they stunning? While we’re on the subject of knockout photographers, please do check out cjohanson foto’s work, too.

Meet the designer:
SOFIE ROLFSDOTTER One of our most popular designers is Sofie Rolfsdotter. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her for several years now, and her style and skills has truly developed over the years. And as it turns out, there is an explanation to the fast development. Text: Maria Richardsson, photo: Jenny Sörling.
- I started to do drawings in 2011, Sofie tells us when we visit her in her house in the south of Sweden. - I’ve always been creative in different ways, but didn’t really know that I could draw until then. I spent one year in an art school in Simrishamn, and were able to try out different techniques, that’s when I got the chance to find my style. As just having drawing for a couple of years, she is really a true talent! And she is right when she tells us that “you never know if you can do something, until you try it”.

We often meet people just falling in love with her style and different motifs. Her favorite techniques is ink and water colours and she does all her drawing in her sofa, watching different TV-documentaries. - I can get lost in my drawings, while listening to all sorts of documentaries in the background. I never have a plan for what I’m going to draw, or a special story, the images just come to me.

Sofie lives in the small town of Skurup, and her house is just filled with inspiration and creative materials. A lot of her interior is second hand and there are projects in progress all around, like the picture wall in the kitchen. Instead of starting with the pictures, she started with the frames. A few of them are filled with her own motifs, a few from her kids and from a favourite fellow artist. The rest are still waiting on the perfect picture to come.
Being the daughter of a glazier, she is well aware of what it means to having your own business. Despite advice of the contrary, she always knew she would end up with her own business. At the moment she is preparing for adding new products to her range of prints, including tea towels, baby clothing and cutting boards. I’m sure they will be just as successful as her posters!

Tip!
Match your workplace by spray painting your supplies. We painted our puncher and penholder in a dark coral shade to match our favourite notebooks. The paperclip tin got a grey coat of colour and the storage boxes also got updated We wrapped the top one in gift wrapping and the bottom one got painted in a light apricot shade.

Meet the designer:
FYRAN
We are so very happy and proud to present our latest addition from Finland. And it’s not just one designer, we’re talking four for the price of one. Their first collection was launched at the Formex fair and got overwhelming response. That is also were we first noticed them, and we instantly fell in love with the products. The colours, patterns and functions are just amazing, and we’re glad to be working together with FYRAN. Tell us about your background! The patterncollective FYRAN is a group of Finlandswedish designers from Österbotten in Finland with a big passion for patterns. We are Anna Aromäki, Andreas Haals, Johanna Högväg and Tanja Krokvik, all aiming to produce fair, ecological and userfriendly products with happy patterns. Together you’re stronger, and there lies the reason why we founded the collective. Where do you find your inspiration? All patterns are inspired by growing up and living in Österbotten. We find our inspiration in the small towns, the wide plain, the magical
forests and the strong crafting traditions. If you look closely you will find details in the patterns reminding you about barns, matting, braids etc. Do you have a dream project that you want to work on in the future? We are doing our dream project right now! Our goal is to develop our company and create an established brand. The past year has been amazing and intense for us, and with great connections all around the world we are hoping to create a place to work for both us and other designers in Österbotten.

Spring fling!
As much as I love the snow and the winter season (being “Norrlänning” and all, coming from the cold parts of Northern Sweden) I must admit that spring has a special place in my heart. Nothing beats the feeling of anticipation (and energy!) that comes along with the crisp light and the longer days this time of the year. Text: Frida Ramstedt.
It always makes me look at my home in a different way. After months of cosiness and layers of wool blankets, dark colours and lit candles I want to start off on a new page. Cleaning the slate. Picking out a few fresh items to make my home feel just as light, bright and energized as I do. An easy trick
to make yourself fall in love with your home all over again is to give your sofa a pillow treatment, and to add some new decorative items on a table, shelf or drawer. It might work just as well for your spring feelings as a few sun beams on your nose tip. Here are my favourites for spring 2014!

The history of
NORDIC DESIGN COLLECTIVE Going through our archives, one can really tell we’ve had two amazing years. We made a timeline of the most important events, but not all would fit. In addition to the events below, we’ve been meeting many of our designers, trendspotting at fairs, doing interviews with both bloggers and designers, moving offices several times, travelling to Gothenburg, Malmö and Helsinki, hosting
2012 MARCH:
Our big launch! We have 40 designers onboard from our start, we are doing our very first photoshoot, and just a week after our launch we’re exhibiting at the Äntligen Hemma-fair. Our first intern Marie, from Norway, is working with us.
AUGUST: Our second intern Frida joins us, and we are moving to a new office.

2013 OCTOBER: Time for our second exhibition, at the Hem & Villa-fair. We’re also doing a photoshoot for Christmas. NOVEMBER:
Jenny joins the company, we’re moving to a new office again and are hosting a Christmas meetup with our designers.
JANUARY: We’re named one of Swedens Top 100 sites, and one of Top 10 e-commerce sites by magazine Internet World. JUNE:
We are re-launching our site! Now with a responsive design to work better on mobile devices. We’re celebrating with an outdoor photoshoot.
Our first 2 years! press events, arranging even more photoshoots, attending christmas markets and different conferences, hosting competitions, getting a lot of press coverage and so much more!

2014 AUGUST:
Karin joins us, as our third intern. And we’re moving to a new office. Again...
SEPTEMBER: We launch international shipping, a big step for us! Emma starts her internship with us, and we’re doing more photoshoots.
OCTOBER: Time for another exhibition at the Hem & Villa-fair.
NOVEMBER: Launch of our very own calendar, with illustrations from 12 of our designers. Limited edition, and we sold out in a few weeks!
JANUARY: Great start of the year, with an exhibition at “Stora Trenddagen” and “Svarta Lådan”, our first TV-interview. We also got named on of the Top 10 e-commerce sites in Sweden again. MARCH: 2 years later, we are working with 100 designers, have thousands of customers all over the world. We’re celebrating this by launching our very own magazine.

dreams! Living in the Nordics, we are always longing for spring after a long and dark winter. As soon as the days are getting brighter and the sun is showing, we’re heading outside and feeling life returning. Styling and photo: Maria Richardsson. Ass: Karin Forssman.
It might be hard to believe, but two days before this photoshoot we had about 20 cm of snow falling! We got a bit nervous for a while, but the warm weather made it all melt away in time and we were able to indulge in garden greens, flowers and wooden materials.
To cosy up garden living, we recommend using lots of textiles and floral patterns. A woven plastic rug that is easy to wash, nice to walk on and bring a softer feeling to your outdoor life. Add some hot beverages in mug with a yellowhammer on it, and you have all you need for a great day in the sun.

Meet the designer:
SOFIE JOHANSSON We first met Sofie Johansson at Formex a couple of months ago. She was showing her work for the first time, and has already gotten a lot of attention and appreciation of her fantastic patterns. We are so happy to be working with Sofie, and caught up with her to hear more about the story behind the patterns. Tell us about your work and your inspiration! Nature is my greatest source of inspiration. I like the thought of discovering the beautiful in the small details. As I leave my house I immediately find fascinating things to capture with my camera. Could be the scales of a pine cone arranged in interesting rows or a little blue anemone just come into bloom. It’s so amazingly beautiful! When designing my patterns I want to give form to the feeling I got when I took that very picture with my camera.
are interwoven when I create my patterns. For example, a sketch of plants in the wood I can choose to colour in the style of mural paintings from the rustic period of peasant society. By using both new and old techniques and sometimes twist and turn things a little I want to create something new and authentic. I often strive for balance, so that some patterns express energy and growing, others calm and harmony. Or both.
More sources of inspiration for me are Swedish folk art, our traditions and older types of colouring. Often these impressions

Eva Levin launched these small vases at the trendfair Formex earlier this year, and it was a smash hit! The combination of pastel porcelain, cork and copper is just right this spring.
