Introduction The Port of Waterford Company was previously constituted as Waterford Harbour Commissioners in 1816. In 1999, the organisation was incorporated as the Port of Waterford Company, a commercial semi-state company whose sole shareholder is the Department of Transport. Since it's inception, the organisation has played a pivotal role in the development of the Waterford city and region. As a company, it is exclusively focused on delivering the needs of new and existing customers. In the 1990's, commercial shipping operations moved from inner-city Waterford to a new terminal some 5 miles downstream of Waterford City, and closer to the sea, with greater room for expansion. Along with industrial and warehousing developments, quay developments include a 190m quay extension which was completed in 2008. Port of Waterford is the only port in Ireland with planning permission secured for further quay development. Further extensions to the quays will be constructed incrementally, on a phased basis. The Port Company has an extensive land bank available for future development. The Industrial Development Authority, IDA Ireland, have developed a business park adjacent. The Port of Waterford handles containers, bulk and general cargoes, as well as cruise vessels (see below), and continues to be a major part of the regional economic infrastructure.
