Edit or ’s LET TER I love summer because the sun finally comes out in the UK – hallelujah! We have Wimbledon and festival season to look forward to and trips to the beach. Heaven. In summer my obsession with eating healthy food goes out the window after about a week. This summer I am most looking forward to being able to sit outside in the sun and try and put a bit of colour into my ridiculously pale skin. My summer wardrobe is going to be full of plenty of colour before next season’s black trend takes over. One thing you didn’t know about me is... I have had my eye on a Chanel 2.55 bag since I was about 15 years old – one day it WILL be mine.

Summer is upon us once again! And what a wait we had ladies and gents. Now that the weather is finally starting to act like summer, NOIR is bringing you all you need to know to get you through this wonderful season with our SUMMER Issue. This is the time of year where everyone starts to worry about what to wear in the hot weather but fear not, we have compiled a summer trends feature to guide you through what trends are popular this summer and to coincide we have provided you with a guide on how to buy the perfect fitting wardrobe for your body shape – so no excuses! As it is festival season we have compiled a list of the best festivals to head to this summer and what to wear whilst BBC presenter Gemma Cairney talks about her festival experiences. The biggest event this summer however will be taking over the UK with the release of the final instalment of Harry Potter. As we all eagerly wait in anticipation you can find interviews with some of the cast in our special Harry Potter section in this issue. Our shoot with last year’s Britain’s Next Top Model finalist Alisha is not to be missed – she looks sensational! For those still to book their summer holiday turn to our feature on the best off-the-track summer destinations for some inspiration to do something a little bit different this year: well you only live once. Talking about only living once, in her short 36 years, Mel B has managed to cram in being part of the biggest girl band in the world (the Spice Girls of course), a solo career, judging Australian X Factor, having a successful marriage and two children (with another one due to arrive as we speak). I chatted to Mel about the Spice Girls and just how she manages to have time for everything and everyone. Finally, a must-read this issue is our Beauty Section featuring our amazing festival beauty shoot, interviews with Hilarie Burton, Annabelle Wallis and Brit Morgan, tips on getting fit for summer, our regular Hit List products which we have tried & tested for you, and also an exclusive interview with top Make-Up Artist Louise Constad. It really is a must-read section this issue. Enjoy, Leanne Milligan

T

indulge ourselves in a spot of sunbathing, lounging in the park with a good summer read, dining alfresco, firing up the barbeque and, if we’re lucky, heading abroad for some real sun, sea and sand (another great thing about summer is the chance of finally getting a tan that isn’t straight out of a bottle!) At home or abroad, we also love summer because it’s a brilliant time for romance, whether you’re already in a relationship, looking for love or simply considering a summer fling. Unlike the bitter winter months when we’re mostly confined to indoors and multiple layers, during summer we can spend more time outside, making it easier to meet people, while new outfits baring a little more flesh make us feel good about ourselves. If you’re very lucky, you might also have put in some extra time at the gym to get bikini body ready in time for summer, but either way, it’s all about exuding happiness and confidence, both of which can often attract guys more that sculpted arms, toned abs and perfect pins! If we can’t afford a holiday, there’s plenty going on in good old Blighty to keep us entertained. It just isn’t summer without the inclusion of a music festival or two, and these days we’re spoiled for choice! Standing in a muddy field listening to our favourite bands seems to have become part of the fabric of British summertime, whether you’re headed for one of the biggies like Glastonbury, Latitude, Reading and T in the Park, or keeping it Indie/alternative and low key with the likes of Indie tracks

Wicker Man and The Secret Garden Party. What better way is there to spend a weekend than experiencing the great outdoors while dancing all day to live music, cursing the rain, revelling with complete strangers in collective hedonism and celebration, whilst enjoying a liberating cocktail of music, alcohol and a fantastic array of food including a sausage filled Yorkshire pudding the size of your own head (a magnificent hangover cure!) It’s no Wimbledon, but it’s fast becoming the epitome of British summer, and boy do we love it! So besides sun, soaring serotonin levels and the possibility of jetting abroad, flirting with the idea of a summer romance or rocking out alongside thousands of festival-goers, why else do we British girls love, love, love summer? I’ve two words for you: summer wardrobe! Again and again,

here’s something really liberating about summer. Remember when we were kids; we ached for those glorious weeks of freedom and sunshine, when we could play outside all day, (and didn’t days seem to last an eternity?) There were family holidays, picnics and trips to the beach, where the heat made ice creams melt in our hands leaving us sweet, sticky and satisfied. Minus Christmas, summer elicits some of my happiness childhood memories and I think that love of summer continues with us as we mature, even if our reasons change. We may have swapped our jelly sandals for six inch wedges, and building sandcastles and climbing trees for trips to Ibiza, music festivals and the nearest beer garden for a cheeky cocktail, but when it comes around, summer still invokes those same feelings of fun, freedom and happiness; a general mood which was definitely captured on the SS11 catwalks. Like really good fashion, summer provides a natural high. It’s a well known fact that sun exposure naturally boosts our level of serotonin, a.k.a. the happiness hormone, so it’s no wonder that sunny weather lifts our mood and fills us with optimism and a sense of well being. Our days aren’t just warmer, they’re longer too – giving us more time to

fashion and summer prove themselves to be a match made in sartorial heaven and this season is no exception! Even if we don’t have the warmest of summers, our serotonin levels will still be rocketing when the trends we’ve spent months lusting after finally reach the high street. This summer, fashion is taking its cue from the ultimate decade of luxury – the sexy seventies – and in doing so promises to brighten our mood as well as our wardrobes. Cue bold colour blocking in delectable jewel tones, electric prints and dazzling whites, either in romantic layers of lace, or kept chic, sleek and minimalist – think white hot suits from Stella McCartney and Calvin Klein. Backstage at her SS11 show in Milan, Miuccia Prada declared: “It’s time to be bold!” and damn she was right! Of all the fashion weeks, Milan is regarded as the ultimate trendsetter and, as its designers proved, SS11 is all about electric colour, graphic prints and maxi lengths. Prada’s own collection was chock full of eye-catching looks in single primary colours, bright Club Tropicana prints and vertical stripes of neon and black, while Gucci gave us a masterclass in sophisticated colour blocking with a 70′s glamour twist, as Raquel Zimmerman opened the show in an orange blazer, purple bandeau and tapered turquoise trousers. If bright colour is an instant mood-enhancer, the couture collections of Milan made us positively euphoric. Here in London, Christopher Kane and Burberry Prorsum had edgier takes on the trend by championing the fluoro trend, which is perfect for fashionable festival-goers wanting to break away from the traditional denim shorts/Hunter wellies look. During summer especially, fashion and music go hand in hand, and while it’s pretty tough to pull off a poncho, there’s no reason you can’t have fun with your festival look – and this way you make a statement, are bang on trend and it’ll be much harder for your friends to miss you in a crowd! Yet, if there was a designer who truly captured what we truly love about summer and distilled it into one iconic catwalk moment, for me it’s Jill Sander’s fluoro filled SS11 collection, and in particular her pink maxi skirt and white t-shirt combo.

Simple, strong, stunning, fun, bold, fearless...it encapsulates everything we adore about summer, fashion and when the two deliciously combine. Pagans are known to worship and celebrate the summer solstice for growth, life and harvest, so it seems only right that us fashion-loving girls worship new catwalk collections and celebrate the opportunity to create a new and exciting wardrobe. We have the freedom to be and wear what we want – to be light, breezy and carefree in romantic lace and flowing hippie maxi dresses and skirts a la Lanvin and Emilio Pucci (check out Mango and River Island for some more purse-friendly high street versions) or bold and confident in bright block/neon colours (try H&M, Cos and American Apparel). So ladies, whatever you choose to do with your summer and whichever trends you adopt, don your sunglasses, break out the summer wardrobe, grab a mojito and make the most of the summer, because, let’s face it; our beloved season will probably be over before we know it! Love music, love fashion, love colour; LOVE SUMMER!

Accessor ies

W

hen it comes to accessories, everybody looks adorable in a fetching hair bow or super quirky in some fun specs but there are certain accessories that should be tailored to your shape. Belts can be your best friend if worn correctly or your own worst enemy if you get them wrong. For those athletics out there, use a skinny belt over a jacket to create and define a waist and for those sexy hourglass figures, use a skinny belt to accentuate that tiny waist. Be warned, however, if you make that belt wider, you will shorten your already tiny torso, creating a more boxy shape. If you’re petite, an instant way to create the illusion of length is to crop your hair. Alternatively, wear hair up and use drop earrings to elongate your neck to swan-like proportions. Shoes are a great way to boost your figure and the easiest way to do this for any shape is wear a wedge. They slim legs and as a bonus are easier to walk in than most styles. A neutral court shoe is an instant leg lengthener. Unless you have Naomi Campbell’s Amazonian figure (and let’s face it, none of us do), ankle straps on shoes should be avoided. They cut off the leg and emphasise even the slightest hint of a cankle. Colourful jewellery is a great way to update an old outfit and instantly lifts the face in a necklace or earrings.

if you are a pear shape. They lengthen legs and lift the bottom. Dark coloured denim will further slim your hips and bum. The major comeback of S/S11 was the boot cut as modelled recently by Anna Wintour and they work wonders for most body shapes especially petites as Anna demonstrated. They lengthen legs subtly without drowning the physique. Best worn with a heel. For the hourglass girls amongst us, high-waisted 70s inspired jeans are the ones to work. A key piece this season which can only be worn by a few. Draw in your waist further with a skinny belt and accessorise with sky high wedges.

he comeback of the ‘pant’ was a major fashion moment this season and the high street is full of these beauties. Get it right and you’ll release your inner Coco Chanel. Get it wrong and you’ll risk looking like your mother in her cleaning tracksuit! Skinny jeans can work for most body shapes but pear shapes should avoid them and stick to a flare to balance out the body. Be wary of the waist size on skinny jeans; if in doubt buy a bigger waist size to avoid muffin tops. Straight legs are the ones to work

avoid swamping the figure. Wrap around tops are the way to go for hourglass ladies with little puff sleeves to cover the tops of arms and accentuate just how tiny that waist is. Apple shapes should keep to dark colours on top to minimise the torso and must make sure the tops are long enough to avoid showing off any unsightly muffin tops. On the contrary, petite shapes need to keep the tops falling on the waist to avoid shortening those already little legs.

Max i dresses

he maxi dress is another trend that is refusing to budge as it is incredibly wearable for all shapes and sizes. Here are a few tips to make sure you make the most of your figure in summer’s biggest trend. Hourglass shapes should choose a fitted shape to emphasise that tiny waist and a vintage, sequinned cape creates a relaxed evening look whilst covering the tops of your arms. Asymmetric dresses have burst onto the scene this summer to channel the 70s trend and work exceptionally well on petites and pears with a patterned fabric to avoid swamping shapes. An empire line is a must for pears to widen shoulders and a halter neck widens shoulders and balances your figure. Tall, athletic girls can get away with frills and detailing so this is a real chance to go quirky. Maxi dress for athletic shapes by Beyond Retro

ar from a passing craze, jumpsuits have become a staple of the British woman’s wardrobe. Having said this, many are fearful of this trend even though they are incredibly wearable for any shape as long as you get the shape right. Firstly consider the fabric; quality silk fabric skims any lumps and bumps and worn with heels will elongate legs and provide a quirky alternative outfit for a night out. Apples, pears and hourglass figures need to avoid the tapered leg jumpsuit and embrace the flared variety which has hit the high street this summer. Choose a wide waistband and wide

legged trouser to show off a well-balanced figure. For pear shaped women, zip, ribbon or belt detailing on the waist draws attention up and away from those hips. For taller, more athletic shapes, a belt or drawstring waist is a must otherwise you’ll end up looking like a sack of potatoes. Apart from this, athletic shapes are lucky and can embrace any jumpsuit shape. Petite shapes can often be drowned by jumpsuits especially those of the flared leg variety so it would be better to channel the jumpsuits little sister; the playsuit. The most important thing to remember is the larger the print, the more forgiving

However the high street is also full of this trend in every colour and print imaginable, so if you’re looking for a relaxed summery look go for the maxi, or if something a bit different is more your thing, try a midi skirt - you will surprised at just how effortless and timeless many of the high street versions are!

WITH…

Hi Grace! HOWDY

How did you get into styling?

G

race Woodward is one busy lady right now. As well as her regular styling jobs, Grace will be back this month in Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model alongside Elle Macpherson, Julien MacDonald and Charley Speed, once again dishing out some honest and helpful advice to the modelling hopefuls. She is also undertaking her first presenting role this month in Sky Living’s Chick Fix where each week four successful women come to the Chick Fix house where they are given advice from a team of experts on dilemmas they are having. Does she ever sleep? One thinks not…

G R AC E WO O DWA R D Interview by LEANNE MILLIGAN, Photographer SIMON HARRIS

competitive nowadays. What would be your advice for people wanting to stand out?

I didn’t really know what styling was growing up. In the 1980’s, I went to Drama School then Art School and all through it was just obvious I was going to work in fashion, but I just didn’t know in which capacity. I was always obsessed with brands and why people chose to wear them. I did try other stuff - I was a PR for a while but was just longing to be on the other side. Eventually I got the confidence to just do it.

I think style starts with yourself. Personally it gets you noticed and it helps you to understand what it feels/looks like for your clients. Be like a style laboratory, this all will influence and help your work. Then go and assist someone.

The fashion industry is really

What are the best and worst

What would people be surprised at about working in the fashion industry. It takes ten years to make it.

aspects of your job? Worst is returns. Stylists without doubt have the longest and most thankless job to do on shoots and you don’t reap the rewards like the photographers and models do with usage fees etc. For editorial shoots you can be paid nothing or a couple of hundred pounds for over a weeks work. Best is being like an alchemist, you bring all the different ingredients together hair, make-up, clothes, attitude and you’ve created a kind of magic - something that’s usually just come out of your head and then there it’s in front of you. Amazing. Another good

bit is meeting other freaky folks like us.

Who have been your favourite clients you have styled? Can I say myself??

Anyone you would love to style? Boudicca both the label and the woman.

When a client comes to you for style advice what is the first thing you do? How do you style her? Talk to them. Get into their head. Get to know them then work out how far they will go and push them a bit further. I use my imagination a lot - you have to be to clearly make images in your head.

Have you had any funny/ embarrassing incidents when styling? Working with men can be both. You think it would be a great chance to stick your hands down a celebrities trousers but it just makes me blush.

What trends are you loving this S/S season? S/S11 is pretty much over, though I’m loving the fetish prude look for next season as seen at Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs

Where do you get your inspiration? Mostly from bad films and art – I’m a sucker for painting.

What would be your top tips for being ‘red carpet’ ready? Personally I smile till my face hurts. Always wear shoes you can actually walk in.

What projects do you have

going on this year? Will you be back for BNTM and X Factor? Hell yes! I’ve just finished two shows, Britain and Irelands Next Top Model, which has been really fun as us judges are featured much more and I’ve landed my first presenting role on a great show called Chick Fix, I’m able to show people a more real side to myself. I heart telly.

Favourite DESIGNERS: Westwood, Isabel Marant, Julien Macdonald (Obvs), Lanvin, Meadham Kichhoff, Lara Bohinc DESIGNER OR HIGH STREET: Both and vintage Favourite ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE: Missoni wedges MY STYLE ICON IS: Queen Elizabeth 1 MY BIGGEST FASHION FAUX PAS WAS: There are so many it’s hard to know where to start…… wearing a press sample to a party and being told to go home and take it off. NOIR’S GUIDE

rom the bohemian playground of the 60’s to the trance and house party capital of the 90’s, the White Isle of Ibiza has seen it all. Known today as the dance Mecca of Europe, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich and famous, young and trendy, beautiful or bizarre, because this nightclub kingdom is now attracting partygoers from all over the world. More importantly this Balearic isle is grabbing the attention of a more even mix of individuals, and no matter whether they’ve just disembarked from a yacht or stumbled out of a bargain hotel in the heart of San Antonio, each and every one of these ravers are looking very stylish. So much so that if you don’t have a serious hairdo and a tan before you arrive, and if you’re not carrying enough luggage for three outfit changes a day, they may not let you through customs.

By ALIX CAREY

WHERE to The thinking fashionista’s

THE IBIZIAN LOOK There’s no hiding the fact that Ibiza is probably one of the most fashionable holiday destinations around, but unlike some fashion conscious locations that leave you throwing around your entire wardrobe in a fashion fit, for Ibiza it’s quite the opposite. There are no hard and fast rules regarding how you look and practically anything you throw on is seen as acceptable. You can walk around in the most outrageous outfits and nobody would bat an eye lid. People are there to make an impression and quite often the more off the wall your outfit is, the most likely you are to gain free entry into the clubs. Obviously this is for the extreme Ibiza fashionista, but it just goes to show how eccentric and accepting the island is of such a mix of style. For you Ibiza virgins don’t panic. You’re not expected to bring anything outrageous, however, if you do want to make some kind of impression those standard holiday shorts and a vest top just won’t cut it, and Ibiza is no place for showing off your sunburnt tummy in a tight crop top. So what are the Ibiza holiday essentials? Here are some key pieces which will take you from the beach, to the bar and onto the beats looking full to the brim with style. Printed and Plain Maxi Dresses Living up to its name, the maxi dress is a huge style staple not just in Ibiza but as a summer essential worldwide, and you want to pack the maximum amount. Maxi dresses come in all kinds of styles and Dolce & Gabbana have

presented an easy way to show off a sofside with breezy chiffon shapes. Whether just popping to the pool bar or walking along the shimmering shores, a maxi is by far the most elegant cover up around and is seen worn by women of all shapes and sizes. Wear it by day over your bikini with a floppy hat, sandals, and a little gold accessory and then by night with a pair of espadrille wedges, a fish plaited hairdo and a collection of chunky gold jewellery. Jumpsuits and Harems Harem pants and jumpsuits have taken the Ibiza world by storm and when they are worn to look so effortlessly stylish, I can see why. Originating from the belly dancers of India ,Harem pants are both loathed by men but loved by women due to their baggy nature and unflattering appeal. However, comfort is the key word here and Harems are the definition of comfortable, especially a few days in when you’ve burnt your legs. Jumpsuits are just as comfortable, and potentially even better as you don’t need to worry about what to wear on top, just wear as is with some chunky jewellery. Wear Harems by day with your bikini or monokini, espadrilles, sunglasses and a trilby hat and by night with a baggy vest over a bright crop followed by a funky hair style. Bright Neons Moving away from print we see the colour blocking phenomenon which is big news with Gucci spearheading the trends. This style allows you to wear

chunks of all paint box primaries in an abundance of different ways be it body con dresses, shorts or if you’re not that daring, a clutch. But for the Ibiza ravers it’s a trend sent from heaven, with highlighter pen shades of shocking pink, and acid yellow setting the dance floors alight. Wear by day subtly with a bright bikini covered by a classic white tee followed by neon framed sunglasses and brightly painted nails and by night to all out with a bright neon playsuit, big hair and of course your neon framed sunglasses. Animal Print If there’s one place you’re allowed to wear as much animal print as Kat Slater and Pat Butcher combined, it’s in Ibiza. The only difference, Ibiza takes away the tack and adds a whole jam jar of glamour. Generally animal print is acceptable in any club, on any beach in any bar; however, you’ve not done the look anywhere near as much justice if you haven’t worn it to The Zoo project. With the slogan “Release your animal” the Zoo Project is an unknown wild day to night party in an old abandoned Zoo of the Ibiza hills, run by Adrian, Lubka and Defex. Wear by day with an animal print bikini, denim shorts with a trilby hat and aviators and by night, go as wild as you dare.

- Formentera The beaches of this island are the main attraction. Beautiful white sandy beaches and clear blue seas are what holiday dreams are made of and Formentera doesn’t disappoint; all the beaches are natural and nearly always set within an unspoiled landscape. Just a short boat ride away there are some beautiful sites to see en-route, although please note: those suffering with a post-party hangover might want to re-think the rocking boat.

music bars, clubs and beaches which have given Ibiza its worldwide reputation as the greatest clubbing xperience. One reason being that in San Antonio’s west end, the binge drinking capital of Ibiza, there are more than 150 bars and clubs in one street alone! I can however give you the low down on some of Ibiza’s hottest spots from the beaches, BARS bars and the all important beats. - Cafe Mambo BEACHES - Bora Bora Just a stone’s throw away from the Eivissa airport is the day to night beach destination of Bora Bora. In the daylight hours the action stretches all the way from the bar to the shore as clubbers rest on the rented loungers, but as the sun sets the party animals emerge and it becomes a club that thumps till 6am.

How could you make your early evening meal or cocktail a whole lot better? Would a front row seat to one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world do the job? Ibiza is world famous for its stunning sunset and with Cafe Mambo offering gorgeous drinks, delicious food and chilled out surroundings it’s the perfect place to hit straight from the beach, letting you wind down before the night ahead that awaits you.

- Ibiza Rocks

Since its opening back in 2007 the Zoo family has grown and is now the most talked about new thing in Ibiza’s underground clubbing scene. Now known for having some of the best resident DJs from around the world, in the summer the Zoo Project gathers up to 3000 every Saturday.

Instead of the thumping beats of funky house, how about the sound of an electric guitar? That’s right; I said an electric guitar. As the new boy to the Ibiza scene, Ibiza Rocks has taken the party island by storm with many swapping the beats and the bass for sweaty boys and bands. But it isn’t just another night club – it’s a summer-long outdoor music festival where not only can you sit back and enjoy a cocktail by the pool, you can also stay there and enjoy the gig from your very own private balcony. Rock on!!!

- Privilege With a capacity of more than 10,000 Privilege was named by the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest nightclub in the world. Flamboyant and loud its main attractions include sex shows, circus acts not to mention its huge indoor swimming pool. - Pacha Possibly the most glamorous of all the super clubs, Pacha has 15 bars, open air garden terraces, a restaurant and a sushi bar. Tropical Prints By ESME LOUISE BURDEN

T

here’s something about the months in between May and September that changes the way the British behave; the slightest inkling of sunshine and we scrabble to dust off our Ray – Ban’s, don our beachwear & sandals and head for the sunshine, leaving the cosy dens we’ve so lovingly made and been hibernating in for the duration of winter! Office workers happily swap the commute home to the sofa after work, for rushing to a beer garden somewhere to make a bee line for a chilled pint or glass of wine. As far as the UK is concerned, if the sun’s out, we should be too. One of the most exciting parts of this time of year is, naturally, the clothes – hot new trends are emerging fast and ready to hit the high street in time to be snapped up by us Brits! This year is no exception. Whether you’re potty about pastels, gripped by gladiators or mesmerised by maxi dresses, there’s something new to suit everyone’s tastes this season. Amongst the soft feminine shades and vibrant bright colours, the most attention grabbing trend for Summer 2011 falls under prints; tropical ones at that! Tropical prints are exactly what everyone needs to get us in the mood for jetsetting, the nation is soon set to be snapping up these fantastic statement pieces in no time; creating a great way to stand out and stay cool in the heat! The ideal touch to create that wow factor for any occasion; whether it’s brightening up a dull day in the

office, turning head at a party or catching the hot lifeguard’s attention on your beach holiday with the girls – we can guarantee there’s a print for everyone. Before those of you who shy away from bold statement clothing hastily dismiss this trend, and dub it as ‘too difficult’, fear not – the options are endless! For taller girls who know how to work a maxi, take advantage! Tackle two trends at once and go for a printed floral jumpsuit or maxi dress, teamed with gladiators for casual chic. For the less fortunate among us in the height stakes (myself included at 5”3) we know it takes great consideration when planning your outfit not to ‘overdo’ the style – if you’re small you don’t want to overload your options or result in looking ‘swamped’ by a trend. I’ve learned that the best way to rock tropical prints if you’re petite is to go for key pieces and team them with plain items; a printed shirt with lighter denim jeans and white espadrilles screams beach–vibe cool; whilst matching a simple daytime outfit with a tropical–style scarf, or jazzing it up with other accessories will ooze effortless chic. Some of the best investments for this season are those you wouldn’t usually dare to buy; but with temperatures soaring, holiday destinations waiting and summer days in what wonderfully feels like endless sweet supply, you’ve got nothing to lose! Take a risk, embrace the prints, and we can assure you it will be well worth it. Now, where did I put my beach hat?

Summer Festivals

NOIR style

By EMMA CUDAHY

Well, it’s that time of year again, when wellies are sold out in every store you enter, tents are flying off the shelves, and straw hats are once again a must have accessory. You’ve guessed it, it’s festival time. I will start by writing about the hottest festivals in the UK and what to wear to ensure, even though you may not have showered in a week, you still look as good as the morning you were leaving.

O

ur first must-see festival taking place during summer is T in the Park. T in the Park has a huge variety of music for 85,000 music fans across seven main stages with large camping areas, as well as other attractions, including a large funfair, comedy tent, silent disco, stalls, and food markets. My personal favourite for the headlining acts, which is exactly why my ticket is on its way! The three main headliners are the Foo Fighters, Coldplay and the amazing Beyonce. Tickets for T are £195 for the full weekend, the same as Glastonbury, and not surprisingly, are sold out now. T in the Park takes place between the 7th and the 10th of July, in Kinross in Scotland. Other acts playing here include The Saturdays, Kei$ha, Calvin Harris and Tinie Tempa, the list goes on, with some truly outstanding acts. I also forgot to mention, the sex bomb of the century, Tom Jones will also be there, classic. Next on the agenda, is the Leeds Festival, which for a change currently still has tickets in stock, so better get in quick if you hope to be there. From punk and metal, through rock, alternative and indie to dance and nu rave, Leeds offers 75,000 music fans a chance to see hot

32

new acts, and local bands alongside established ones, plus the odd exclusive performance. The Leeds festival is held in Bramham Park in Leeds with tickets going for £192.50 for the full weekend, it takes place on the last weekend in August, and is another festival with some excellent acts performing. The headliners over the weekend are Muse, My Chemical Romance, and Pulp and The Strokes co-headline on the final night. Next up, is the Big Chill Festival. Set in a picturesque location and offering

both families and ravers a diverse range of alternative, dance, electronica, and chilled beats from live bands and DJs. The music programme is a mix of everything from legends to new talent, plus a whole range of musical styles from rock, folk, jazz, African, dub, and unique collaborations. Aside from music the festival also has art, films, poetry, cabaret, visuals, and gourmet food. The headliners for this festival are Tinie Tempah, The Chemical Brothers, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Kanye West, and

Other acts include Jessie J, xxxy, Katy B, and many other up and coming acts. Last but not least is, V Festival. This is one of the biggest festivals taking place over the summer and will be held in two locations, Staffordshire and Chelmsford between Saturday the 20th August and Sunday the 21st. It costs £175 for the full weekend camping, which is unfortunately sold out, as are most festivals. To get a hold of a ticket you’ve got to be quick. V Festival is held over a large site, and offering a bill of predominantly commercial acts, crowd favourites, and radio friendly indie upstarts in a corporate festival atmosphere. It is home to some of the biggest acts, with the main headliners this year being Eminem and Rihanna on the Saturday, and Arctic Monkeys on the Sunday. Other acts include, Tinie Tempah, Bruno Mars, Ellie Golding, Jessie J, and many other amazing artists. If you are stuck for something to wear, I have come up with several outfits which will have you looking amazing no matter where you are, or which festival you choose to go to

NOIR interviews the cast from the Final installment

JA MES P HE LPS Interview By LEANNE MILLIGAN - Photographer BEN GOLD www.bengold.co.uk

A

long with his brother Oliver (George Weasley in the films), James has provided us with some of the funniest moments in the Harry Potter films. This time around however, The Deathly Hallows Part 2 allows James to take on some truly dramatic and emotional scenes. So we here at NOIR thought it was fitting to find out all you need to know about Fred Weasley and James himself.

The huge premieres and hanging out with my friends during shooting.

The reason everyone loves the Harry Potter films... I think it’s because everyone can relate to at least one character in each story.

People should go see The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 because... it wraps everything up and because the battle sequences are amazing – they’re some of the biggest in film history!

ALL ABOUT JAMES...

ALL ABOUT FRED...

First movie I ever watched: The Muppet Movie.

Playing Fred is... a pleasure and very enjoyable.

If I had to describe Fred in 3 words... Funny, smart and red-head.

My first day on set... was in Goathland, Yorkshire. I was very nervous but very excited to start something that would change my life.

My favourite scene I filmed was... the scene where Fred and George put their names into the Goblet of Fire (from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). It was just fun and cool shooting that scene. There was comedy,

stunts, a bit of a fight…what else can an actor want in one scene!

Favourite food: Chicken Mango salad.

My music taste: One of my best memories on set... I was reading Peter & The Wolf with the Halle Orchestra one weekend. During the week leading up to it, I was learning the lines for it and Sir Michael Gambon asked me what I was up to. I explained and he went through the lines with me, as he had actually done it a few years before. That was a very special moment for me.

What I’ll miss most about filming Harry Potter...

All types of rock, Jazz and Blues.

If I could play one character in a film it would be: A bad guy in James Bond.

One thing you didn’t know about me: I can play the guitar round the back of my head.

After Harry Potter: I would like to have my own hair colour back and play a character that is different from Fred Weasley.

TOM FELTON Interview By DANIELA MOROSINI

F

rom the ashes of Harry Potter, a new British star is rising. At only 23, Tom Felton already has a film career spanning over eleven years, and shows no signs of slowing down. Best known for his thrillingly malevolent turn as Draco Malfoy in the hit Harry Potter series, Felton now has the freedom to break out as a fully-fledged member of young Hollywood. Daniela Morosini was chatting to Tom Felton at the Century Club, London, about super fans, growing up in the limelight, and not getting naked on set.

The final part of Deathly Hallows is coming out this month, and I understand that multiple endings have in fact been filmed? Do you know which is being used?

Well, obviously the ending is as it is in the book. We haven’t changed it, it’s not like “I (Draco) win!”

So there’s no surprise Voldemort is Harry’s father twist? (Laughing) You knew?! No epic twists on that kind of scale, but they filmed all the book and they said from the start this could end up to be a four hour film if we’re not careful. So that’s the reason that I’m covering my backside and saying that I don’t know what’s going to end up in the final film, but I’m just as excited as everyone else is!

But obviously it’s staying true to the book? Oh yeah. Someone said to me, “oh come on, you can tell me, what happens? Who dies, who lives?” and I was like, you know they’re based on a book, right?

Your character’s changed a lot, from the first few films, being a simply nasty boy to someone a lot more complicated.

36

Sure. Yeah, yeah, definitely. I couldn’t agree more. And it’s done purposely, I think, the first few years he’s portrayed as this slimy little git and to build the audience’s hate towards him. And like you said, in the last few films, he’s got more complicated.

NOIR m eet s You see him waver in his beliefs... And you see the reasons to why he is like he is! Like most bullies, when you look into their pasts, they’ve got these kinds of bad environments. (“Not the best parents!”) I think that’s an understatement! I have the worst parental influences of any young wizard out there! And it’s nice to kind of see that side of it, and to see him wake up and think “is this what I want to be doing?” Like you said, in the last few films, we see him question that, whether it is his true calling. He wants to help. In the last film more than ever, you see that, he feels compelled to fight Harry and make sure he doesn’t succeed, but equally, he wants to help him.

He’s very much a conflicted character by the end. He is! Yes. Poor thing, bless him.

That’s a real step up for you as an actor, becoming a more multi-layered character? Yeah, definitely. I was just saying to someone in the cab on the way over here, I was so nervous about that. I was so used to standing at the back, sneering, with the odd Potter comment, and that was my day done. And all of a sudden they wanted me to show turmoil, and cry at the sink, and it was a world away from what I was used to! I was very lucky to have David Yates [directed last few films] with me, he very much had faith in me, which was nice. And he really held my hand and helped me with it, and made sure I had plenty of time to do one on one readings with Michael Gambon [Dumbledore] and a few other characters, and that was really crucial for me. It came out really well, I was so thankful.

(Laughing) It’s funny, cause a lot of people expect you to be much like your character.

way you say “Potter”. Did you have to train yourself into that?

But that would be a horrible thing to say about you!

Ah, bless you! Thanks! It’s some-thing that’s just developed over the years. But it is the number one request from fans! We spoke out at the conventions, nearly every other one, they’re asking me to spit out the words, well they always ask me to say “Get back, Potter”, and I say it, and they’re like, no no, say it like how I want you to say it! I’ve had great enjoyment out of spitting the words Potter out of my front teeth for the last few years. (Laughs) And I’ll miss that, definitely! You see, after the third film, every line I said seemed to be directed at Harry and ended with a sly “Potter”, so a lot of that going on.

Well yeah, thank you! I’m glad you say so. A lot of questions I get asked are like “how similar are you to Draco” and I hope I’m the complete opposite! If I was anything like him I’d be seriously worried. So yeah, I try to stay a polar opposite. But there are negative reactions from the general public.

Not from fans? Well, yeah, you’re gonna get it, the younger audience particularly, they can’t quite distinguish between the two. So especially when I come in, like, hey, nice to meet you! I’m super friendly, I’m Tom, and they’re like “Nooo! Hold on a minute, you’re that slimy git from Slytherin!”

But it’s okay, you’re only in character for a small part of the day, so you can be yourself most of the time But yes! Going back to what you asked, I actually find it quite therapeutic letting out my frustrations or anger through this little child, it’s actually a lot of fun. I miss it already!

It must be quite cathartic to play an evil character. It is! It’s good to play someone as different from you as possible. The fact that I get the chance to live in the shoes of this evil git, as we’ve called him, it’s (starts to laugh again) it’s, um, relaxing for me? I can go home as an even friendlier Tom!

Because you got it all out of your system! There you go.

See, the other characters don’t get that.

But obviously you were still always the baddie of the film. And they go home frustrated! One of the best things about Were you tempted to try a bit of method acting..? your turn as Draco is the

You had the unique opportunity as an actor that the material was actually being written, while you were still filming. Yeah that was very strange.

So did you read ahead? I tried not to, I wanted not to! I was like, I want to stick to the script, not seeing what we’re doing in two years time, because we shouldn’t do, really. That went out the window! I had a friend ring me up like “Have you read Half-Blood Prince yet?” And I’m like, no no, I’m waiting, I’m gonna read a chapter a week for a year....I read it all in three days! (Bursts out laughing) It was very cool, actually, to have an insight to your character... and feel like, oh, that’s going to be me!

Exactly. Was there anything you really wanted to happen? You see, you read the books, and you forget, and by the time the script comes into your hands, you forget which bits you were looking forward to! Although they are the same story, they actually read very differently. But no, everything that was in the books was something to look

37

“My dream is to play a Bond villain. I came into the industry wanting to be Bond, and now I’ve flipped it, and I wanna be the baddie.”

forward to, whether it was a fight with young Potter. Everything from Half-Blood Prince was an eye-opener that we were going to see more of his character.

Was there anything you really didn’t want to happen? Well, I forget if it was in the book, but it was in the...(ums and aahs for a bit) this is where the fans get you for not knowing! Pretty sure it was the third film?

It’s fine, Tom, I’ve only read the books once Brilliant! Pretty sure it’s the Prisoner of Azkaban, Draco gets turned into a ferret. Wait, third film, fourth film..?

That must have been quite a challenge for you as an actor, pretending to be a ferret. (Deadpan) Oh yeah, I went through years of ferret training.

Oh yeah? I take my character research very seriously

So you’ve lived among the ferrets? Oh, of course! I went to zoos, ate with the ferrets...(both start laughing) I love how long we went on with that! No, we were very lucky, we had this amazing special effects team, and they had like a tennis ball on a stick. That was the ferret. As human I did a weird twisty thing, and they edited it, and um... I forget if it was the book or film, but that I came back from being a ferret naked. All my clothes had disappeared with the magic! And I ran through the courtyard... butt naked.

But obviously they cut that out! Well, on the actual day I had to do it, I mentally prepared myself, cause I knew there was going to be like fifty extras there, and it was cold. I’m not gonna say any more than that (chuckling) so hardly the best opportunity

for nudity...

Did you have a favourite book at all? Yeah, Chamber of Secrets. That’s the book that made me a fan, actually. I was one of the few cast members who wasn’t really a fan of the books when we started shooting. I’d tried to read before, but I wasn’t much of a reader, and then Chamber of Secrets pretty much converted me into being a book buff. It had a flying car, Gilderoy Lockhart, who was a brilliant character. And the Basilisk!

I heard Robbie Coltrane say recently that there was a phase on set when Daniel Radcliffe fancied himself as a bit of a comedian, but he wasn’t all that funny? Oh no! Daniel is a natural comedian. I have a terrible thing, I can never remember jokes. I’ve been told thousands over the years, and if you asked me to tell you a joke now, it would be why did the chicken cross the road. Daniel has a never ending source of great new materials, things he’s heard, or old Tommy Cooper, old classic quotes, and constantly reeling them off. Sometimes he found himself funnier than anyone else but he was a naturally hilarious guy.

Did you have any teenage phases they won’t let you forget? Oh yeah, so many. Not on set so much, I was wary to not bring them on set with me! We had weird things... like yo yos, all the cast were walking around with yo-yos, or remote controlled cars, skateboards, BMXs... naturally all these things we were only allowed to do for a week before someone fell over and it was like, we’re getting rid of this! We were searching for sports that were safe, that you could do in a padded cell, trampolining and basketball were out the window.

And you had your music, of course.

Of course, yeah, I was allowed to do that. I had my guitar in my room, we had so many hours to ourselves, I taught myself to play, along with a bunch of other guys. Matt Lewis, he plays Neville Longbottom, he was an avid guitarist. We had Beatles jam sessions! It was nice to learn a new skill.

So other than music, and pancake making I’ve heard, do you have any other hidden talents? Oh yeah, I’m a dab hand at crepes! Definitely, oh yeah. (Laughs) No, not really! I love to write, whether it’s songs or poetry or screenplays. Me and my friend started screenplays for a TV show, get the old creative juices so to speak. I like driving! Driving in other countries, that’s a nice thing.

You’d acted before Harry Potter, and you’ve acted since, so how did the set compare to others? Since finishing Potter, I’ve been able to do some independent films, and they’re obviously the biggest difference, with size-wise, 30 people rather than 300. And time, I was so used to these relaxing guitar breaks, and then it was like, do one take and then do another! Lots of lessons learnt over the last year. But a lot of fun, with 300 people it’s so hard to learn all the names, let alone bond with them, on a smaller film, the friendships spark up quicker.

But with a cast and crew together for so long, were you tempted to get something to commemorate your time? Funny you say that, cause it was my idea to get a lightning bold tattoo. On the...left arse cheek. (Laughter)

No one else up for it? We all did it! It’s there! No, no one else was keen, oddly enough, at all. I thought maybe a mini Dark Mark, or a Slytherin ring...no! No one was keen. 39

But Lord of The Rings got the Elvish! That’s what I said! I said, look, they’re unified.

You got to work with some great British actors. Did anyone stand out as a role model? I always say Daniel (Radcliffe). Even though he’s younger than me, he’s been a huge inspiration over the years. Not just how talented he is on set, but also, when he’s not on set he’s working, or coaching, or learning accents or dancing...just because we’ve landed this great gig, doesn’t mean we’re all bona fide actors. Far from it. So he’s been a great source of inspiration. Everyone’s been warm and lovely. Jason Isaacs who played, Lucius, my dad, took me under his wing. Even now, he’s like send me the scripts you’re getting, let me have a look. He’s a second dad, really, he’s very paternal.

There’s a real niche online following. Were you aware of that?

But it’s awesome, cause it’s a draconian system of writing letters, but I can get back to people, or let them know so much quicker what we’re up to.

Do you ever see any of your replies? Yeah, and there’s LOTS of weird ones, majority of them are weird. But some really friendly ones, nice people wanting to promote things. The new Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Tom’s upcoming blockbuster with James Franco and Freida Pinto) trailer came out onl- ine and immediately I can see people’s reactions.

What else have you got in the pipeline?

We shot most of that in Berlin last year, a sort of horror/sci-fi thriller, a world away from Hogwarts! A film called From the Rough, a very low-budget, shot in four weeks. Four weeks was usually our reading time on Harry Potter, so that was different!

Were you not tempted to take a break? You’ve been working solidly for the last eleven years.

In the eleven years in which the films have been made, the nature of celebrity has changed a lot. Do you use Twitter to engage with fans?

You’ve said before you’d like to play a Bond villain…

40

good question, I’m not sure. Nicholas Hault. He’d be a great Bond! He has that unique handsomeness that you need. I’m going to start a petition! Let’s get together, and write that screenplay!

In the inevitable Potter remakes, with Daniel as A film called The Apparition, with Dumbledore, who would you Ashley Greene (of Twilight fame). want to be?

I’m quietly aware. Every time I go to a convention, they love to bring up the fanfic and the pictures...some of which has more alarming topics than others! Completely off-piste with the ways they’ve taken the characters, and done their own thing. Any excuse to write is a good thing. These super fans, as I call them, sometimes scary as they can be, are the ones who’ve been keeping us going.

When Twitter came along, a friend of mine was like, you have to do it, it’s a great way of getting in touch with fans. But I’m not on Facebook, I don’t do social media, it’s not for me, but she started an account for me, and in three days I was hooked!

“Since finishing Potter, I’ve been able to do some independent films... with size-wise 30people rather than 300.”

Lucius! My dad. I’m banking on that, if not, Voldemort. Or Snape, change my hair colour from white to black. That’d be great.

One last question Emma Watson rebelled against her bushy Hermione hair and got a pixie crop. Are you tempted to strike out with something wild? A mohawk, maybe?.

Who would be your Bond, then?

(Laughs) It’s funny, cause seven years, I went to a school where you weren’t allowed to dye your hair. But they gave me the official pardon and let me have white hair for seven years. And then I thought, sod it, and shaved it all off, a grey one all over. I was sick of being the albino kid, I went in like, “I’m normal again!”. And they suspended me from school for two weeks. For having too short hair. I was like, you’re kidding me?! So that was kinda weird. That was my rebellious streak. I’m glad it’s still on my head after all that bleach. Bleach is dangerous, kids!

Ooh. Good question. I want to say Daniel Radcliffe! That could be a bit too much. He’s a bit short...(laughs) No, bloody

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is out nationwide from July 15th

Well yeah. Definitely, I’ve had break for the last few months. I’m always busy-ish, but I’ve had time to see friends, walk the dog, which has been really cool, I’ve felt like a normal person the last few months. I’m excited to go out on a high note with the last Potter film.

That’s the dream! I came into the industry wanting to be Bond, and now I’ve flipped it, and I wanna be the baddie.

NATALIA TENA Natalia as Tonks in HARRY POTTER

Interview By LAURA SMITH

W

hat’s not to love about Natalia Tena? Enthusiastic, upbeat, quirky, witty, hilarious and bags of fun, the English actress has got quite a bit in common with her Harry Potter character and, much like Tonks, the hugely talented Tena has a few tricks up her sleeve! As well as acting, (this year she’s also starring in films You Instead, Bel Ami and HBO’s fantasy-drama series Game of Thrones) she’s also got one hell of a voice and can bash out a tune on accordion with plenty of gusto, both of which she does frequently with her band ‘Molotov Jukebox’. Laura Smith chats to the lovely Natalia about Harry Potter, filming at festivals, the ideal recipe to a rocking Gyp-Step band and doing sex scenes with Twilight hunk Robert Pattinson…

Hi Natalia! How did you find filming The Deathly Hallows: Part 2?

There’s a big battle scene at the end of the film, did you get to be part of the action?

Well, it felt like part 1 and 2 were the same as the filming ran into each other. Overall, I spent all the times I wasn’t filming laughing at everything funny Lupin had to say and generally catching up with the banging Potter cast and crew!

The battle scene was epic due to the fact that such an integral set had been demolished like a titanic car crash; that was a bizarre sight! I wasn’t really part of the action this time, shame because I thoroughly enjoy prancing around shouting and imagining random things in front of a green neon screen!

How did you feel about what happens to Tonks in the final film? Obviously loved it, every actor likes the idea of a death scene! I like the fact she shoves into minimum time all the big phases of life – love, birth, death … done!

What’s been the best thing about being part of the Harry Potter phenomenon? Firstly, getting to meet its crème de la crème crew and cast. Secondly, owning a wand and

shouting in Latin and getting paid for it, and thirdly, meeting kids that actually believe you have magic powers and threatening to turn them into frogs if they don’t do their homework!

You’re about to make lots of Robert Pattinson fans very jealous in the upcoming Bel Ami! What can you tell us about your role and getting ‘down and dirty’ with Rob? Basically I play a syphilitic prostitute in Paris at the turn of the century! Rob and I used to be good mates for a brief period before he shot to Vampire fame. I remember him taking me out for drinks before going to America to film it, saying “yeah, going to do some Vampire movie, see you when I get back.” Little did he know how huge it was going to be! Seeing him again was great and I always find sex scenes very funny! You’re there making sex noises, thinking about the fact that all the crew are respectfully trying to do their job delicately to not make it hard for you … it makes me want to crack up every time! It’s about as sexy as watching paint dry. The daunting bit; knowing that lots of people

thousands of extras in festival party mode to play with!

You also star as a rock chick in You Instead set at T in the Park, can you tell us about your character Morello?

Tell us about your own band, Molotov Jukebox. How would you describe your sound and how do find combining music and film?

Morello is the lead singer of a fem-rock band The Dirty Pinks and is feisty, cynical and funny yet vulnerable. She’s been working hard to make her band get somewhere and thinks very little of Adam Elva, the lead singer of a rival band, to whom she gets handcuffed in a strange twist of fate. But love can flourish between all sorts of unlikely people and they realise they have a connection that is above their antagonistic banter!

How did you find shooting over four days of intense guerrilla style filming? Literally, it was exhilarating, exhausting, hilarious, adrenalinefuelled madness! I reckon I can speak for everyone in saying that that Monday morning wrap held such HUGE sense of achievement, it felt monumental! More than anything, it had to do with the cast, crew and director we had. Every single person there made it possible and David MacKenzie is a relentless man! Extreme acting was very much the consensus of the project: there was, and we had

42

Basically, it’s Gyp-Step; a well aimed throw by its individuals and their relative musical styles into a melting pot of chaos, stirred with love, garnished with loud shouting and strong looks, then served warm with massive smiles. Definitely 6 of your 5 a day, fantastic for every muscle used in contagious dancing! With regards to combining, one of the best things in life is finding a synergy between the things you love in the hope that they can work together and bring out the best in each other, for your career and more importantly for you those you love.

Our guitarist Adam throws down £40 in my lap, (I’m wearing a one piece red panda outfit, he is wearing black) ‘I’ll give you £40 if you punch me in the face, go on!’ I spend the next hour trying to take a running jump into his face with my fist but can’t do it. We find this very funny as does Lauren, my flatmate grinning asleep on the sofa and Sam, who has entered in a full penguin outfit. Our manager Sirius arrives to get us all up and ready to move this undisciplined chaos on the road because ....

2 pm WE HAVE GO TO WALES FOR A FESTIVAL!!! Sirius says he’ll drive. When we finally manage to get into the car, I sprawl in the back. We stop to get cider, hummus, Boursin and baguette (standard molotov snack) at Tesco, then I pass out.

6pm I wake up just as we arrive. Sirius informs us that we’re no longer staying in the promised country manor; we’re in tents … kill me now!

Natalia starring in YOU INSTEAD

1 0pm It’s nearly time! I smoke and feel cold and tired, WHERE IS THE ADRENALINE?! Max eats half a burger and starts to feel terrible, but Sam devours the rest and says its fine. Tom is worried he’s completely out of tune and asks me obsessively for an A (everyone has to tune to me as my accordion is out of tune, not only with the world pitch, but itself!) We walk on stage and I

start doing star jumps in order to be able to brave the chill while wearing a little red number. We do a line check which brings the crowd in. Suddenly ... WHERE IS MAX!!?? The drum stool most definitely is not seating a Max..... THE BURGER!! I start telling the crowd that they have to dance or find the entrance of this festival immediately and f*** off, which strangely makes audiences warm to you! Tom wants yet again another A (IT’S FINE!!!) Sam is about to go look for Max when.... HE APPEARS! We can finally begin! There is something to be learned about doing gigs at the end of your physical tether; you’re just trying to get through and you realise how much fun you’re having and how easy it is to talk to the crowd and make jokes when something goes tits up, (like when we threw in some chord clangers or Sam suddenly slipping out of tune when he’s doing his violin solo!) and you realise that the au-dience can enjoy the show all the more for

these little moments. Still... WE SMASHED IT!!! The tent was heaving by the second song and by the end all the boys’ shirts had sweated through. Sirius was joyful we had a new song “Don’t Panic” which we dedicate to him trying to manage this band of individuals with a penchant for being unmanageable. Applause, encore, repeat.

MIDNIg ht We assemble to have our post drink/cigarette on a d ishevelled quad bike. There is nothing like that moment of stopping after that gig, putting down the weight of the accordion and just breathing, not talking and sitting on anything. All step to campfire where I get so sleepy; my throat and limbs hurt but more smiling banter takes me into my dreams to the sound of Dub-Step, the festival season has started once again...!

Natalia with her band MOLOTOV JUKEBOX

This festival, ‘Landed’ is new this year and run by an amazing specimen of man, Aubrey (or Brie as I like to call him). He apologizes for this mishap but, luckily, the tents are BEAUTIFUL! Angus, Tom and Adam finally arrive and I throw a pot noodle at them to celebrate. We all settle in as Brie hands us the local cider, (actually) called orgasmic cider and we all look at the sheep, lambs and hills surrounding us, approve highly and continue drinking.

NOIR MEETS...

Oliver Phelps

Interview By LAURA SMITH

My favourite experience working on The Deathly Hallows was going to Emma Watson’s place in London with James, Dan, Rupert, Mat Lewis, Alfie Enoch, Bonnie and Evana, and reminiscing over the last ten years.

On my last ever day filming it was actually quite emotional – to see the bulldozers outside waiting to tear down half the studios!

My favourite scene in the final film is when Voldemort addresses all the Hogwarts the courtyard.

his summer, the Harry Potter films come to a gripping finale in the biggest film event of the year – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two. And so, after ten years, we say goodbye to some much love characters, including my personal favourites, the Weasley twins. We caught up with one half of the mischievous duo, Oliver Phelps, who took time out of his busy Harry Potter promotional schedule to take part in an exclusive shoot for NOIR and share 20 things we didn’t know about filming The Deathly Hallows, playing George, the battle of Hogwarts, losing an ear, being part of the Harry Potter phenomenon and why Nana knows best when it comes to sports!

in

Filming the Battle of Hogwarts was epic! There’s so much action and fighting going on. Most of the recognisable parts of the school look like they’ve been in a bombing raid.

The most difficult scene to shoot was reacting to something happening to Fred.

The best thing about playing George was you could for the most part have a laugh and smile and not look out of place.

I’m a little bit like my character because I think by playing a joking, happy-go-lucky character for most of my adolescence, some things took root: I do like a joke, but I think I know where to draw the line whereas George wouldn’t. James and I were very much jokers on set… Rupert too for that matter!

What I remember most about my very first day on set is that we were filming the very last shot in the film.

The atmosphere on a Harry Potter set is very friendly and humorous.

The coolest thing I got to do during filming was punching a stunt guy through a table in HP4.

My most embarrassing moment on set was when running in my Quidditch gear, tripping on my broom and falling over!

In all the movies I always wanted a war wound, and I guess they don’t come much better than losing an ear! Spending all day with a prosthetic piece stuck to the side of my head took some getting used to but the effects team were great fun to work with.

Out of the entire cast I really loved working with Rupert Grint. I first realised how big the Harry Potter films had become when I was in Cancun, Mexico in 2002 and all the Americans there recognised me!

I’ve worked with quite a few directors during the Potter series but I really don’t have a favourite – they all had different styles and ideas, and it was great to learn from their direction. David Yates got me to try and relate what was happening to my character to something from my own life, and that made it more real. Mike Newel really got my sense on humour and let me bring it out in the character. Alfonso Cuarón got me and James to overlap sentences, which worked really well. Without Chris Columbus I wouldn’t have been part of this great journey. Considering we were all kids, his patience is amazing!

WITH…

Was your passion for fashion a childhood dream?

a loveless life on the costume dept shelf!

It has always been deeply rooted in me. From a young age my parents worked in theatre and I would play for hours in their costume department. Entangled with the beautifully ornate costumes I role played with everything: ‘Panto’ creations, heavily embellished frilly frocks, silky, pimped out 80’s shirts, riotous costumes from the Jamaican Dancehall scene. Not to mention an unbelievable array of tacky garments, so hideous and unwearable that you almost warm to them as they are probably doomed to

When did you start designing?

52

I started designing seriously when I got to college and realised my dream.

You won several awards. Tell us how they helped you stepping into the fashion sphere. They helped me make contacts and most importantly to be clearer about the directions I did and definitely did not want my brand to take.

fter two seasons showing at the London Fashion Week, Saffron Knight is finally gaining the first steps towards the big-time success she deserves. While her printed t-shirts are sold on the website artistspringboard.com, her collections are reaching international audiences through Vogue Italy and fashion bloggers. With prints that always tell a story, she tells NOIR all about her creations, which we hope to see very soon...in our wardrobes!

Interview by GILDA ORRU

How does the city inspire your collections? What parts of London do you prefer for picking ideas and people watching? Lately I have been people watching in South & East London where there are some fascinating real-life, random characters! They haven’t been ‘prepped’ or screened in any way. Nor have they spent months re-moulding themselves into a persona to imitate. The ‘truthfulness’ in a natural character is as moving as the emotion we identify with in an actor’s pathos. Life’s genuine randomness is full of fun, shock, awe and humour.

I believe that there is no harm in genuine devotees of the arts and the way they own the streets. It’s entertaining to see bold mixes of styles gaining confidence in the traditionally snubbed streets of SE London.

can have a knock on effect and devalue the real precious gems that take time to design/make - they get lost in translation. Today’s consumers have become accustomed to having whatever they want at an affordable price.

English fashion is in a great moment of development: it is finally being recognised and taken seriously on an international level. Who are the British fashion designers that you look to as role models?

Following a dream means sacrifice. The route to fashion is through long internships and unpaid work. You have started your own thing very bravely. Is it a struggle to keep a day job while trying to make your dream come true?

Alexander McQueen without a moment of hesitation.

When an industry is developing, it also means there is a lot of competition. Do you sometimes feel that suddenly fashion has become everyone’s cup of tea? And do you think that fast fashion has something to do with it? Every young woman over the decades has wanted to…be associated with fashion and to appear to their peers as being ‘in the know’. It is life, it is youth and the promise of possibilities. Today, items that were previously seen as luxuries are more accessible due to the power of the high street take over. This

It is unbelievably hard to do this on my own; to start from zero with zero... probably insane! But there is nothing else I would rather do! All my passion resides in my love for the art of fashion. It’s why I do what I do and is the only route for me get where I want to be.

You have been showing at London Fashion Week for the last two seasons. Tell us all about it! Placing orders in my first season at ON|OFF was very uplifting! It goes without saying that Anna Wintour making an appearance at the ON|OFF venue caused a lot of hysteria amongst all the designers and was indeed a memorable highlight! This season I showed at Vauxhall Fashion Scout at a

presentation with Felicities PR, met many delightful people in the industry, including quite a few familiar faces!

Your new collection, called Penetrate is amazing. How would you describe the woman represented by your collections? As a sophisticated, forward thinking mover and shaker!

What is your signature that you will always keep throughout the collections? Print, print, print! The print is the essence to me. It allows me to tell elaborate stories and is my source and inspiration.

Tell us about your style. What are the trends you are going to follow during the next season? My style has to be the label’s uniquely imaginative undercurrents. This comes from harnessing two opposing worlds into a single concept through elaborate story telling in the print. I also embellish with quirky handwriting techniques and splashes of cool, edgy glamour. I always include a cutting edge shape to enhance the beauty that women possess. Forgive me, but I never follow trends, I always create them.

Will you expand your interest in prints and textiles towards other forms of art as well as fashion? Absolutely! I am just in the midst of doing that right now, I have a huge portfolio of prints suitable for all aspects of interiors for example. ather round little wolves… Meet Spencer Nezey, a talented producer-songwriter and MC, formally of hip-hop dance floor duo Jupiter Rising and former Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt: the Dolls may have made her a star but we haven’t seen anything yet. Forget everything you knew before and let us introduce you to Her Majesty & The Wolves… A new, fresh sound, exciting performance art, a collective and don’t forget… you heard it here first. Interview By HEATHER B

As I wait in the lobby to interview HMATW’s, Kimberly and Spencer swoop past on their way to the room. It’s clear that they are a dynamic duo. Kimberly just oozes style, beauty and energy while Spencer beat boxes his entire way through reception… it’s clear that he has music pulsing through his veins. So how are you holding up? What have you been doing today?

So here for a few days yet then…

how do you like London?

SN: Yeah, the stuff we gotta do now is fun but on days off we have some friends of ours coming to town, a friend of mine just left and we have some more coming over on Saturday, so we will be going out on Monday.

KW: LOVE London! Good people. I love the music scene here, like it’s truly embraced and there’s, you know, opportunities to get out there.

Right, so that will be a messy one then…

SN: Is that fish?

KW: [Laughs]

[Room service is delivered to the room] KW: Yeah it is… it’s really stinky fish! Well, I really hope it is that… I haven’t brought anything dodgy in with me I promise!

KW: Gosh we’ve been up since early this morning! Photoshoots all day, interviews now, then a few personal appearances tonight.

SN: Yeah…

Wow! So busy, busy, busy! How long are you in London for?

KW: We gotta celebrate! It can’t be all work… there’s gotta be some playing in there as well [Laughs]

So, Her Majesty And The Wolves! How did this collaboration come about and how long have you known each other?

SN: Till Tuesday.

You’ve got to, you’ve got to… so

KW: Gosh… how long have we

known each other one and a half to two years? SN: Yeah, it’s going to be like two years now. We had a mutual friend who works in the industry and I work with a lot of different people, and he just kept telling me, ‘Man, you’ve gotta work with this girl, you’ve gotta work with this girl Kim’ and I was like, ‘Cool, tell me about her’, he said that she was overseas but when she comes back you’ve got to meet each other. So, we finally met each other when I was at my production partner’s studio and we worked on some music. Then later on I approached Kim because we had started building this relationship and she’s like, really cool and I asked her! I said ‘Hey, wanna do a project together?’ So we thought about it and decided to do it.

So Spencer, you do a lot of things… you produce, you write, you can play the saxophone… is that right?

And I guess that was it! The sign! KW: Yep, that was it! How would you both describe HMATW’s sound, what is HMATW bringing to the music market today? SN: THE BUSINESS is [Laughs]

is

what

SN: Yeah, yeah…

it

Exactly, the business [laughs] KW: EPIC! [Laughs] SN: It’s awesome! It’s good, it’s all good… It’s awesome music.

It’s a shame we don’t have a sax here that you could play for us! Are you still doing all of that, as in producing and writing for other people? SN: Yeah, undoubtedly. Obviously this is taking up most of my time but I’m working on a lot of stuff. Right now I’m working on an artists album called Black Star who’s signed to Endoscope, he’s a good friend of mine so I’ve been really helping him develop his sound. We’ve just put out his mix tape. So my time is pretty much divided by that, between our project HMATW’s and Black Star’s project and then I have my own stuff… I’ve started DJing so I’m producing my own music for that and there’s a lot of different people who approach me for different things. So there’s a lot of stuff on my table right now but right now this is my main focus HMATW.

“It’s pretty much all about the music! Designing costumes, dreaming big and making it happen!”

KW: When he asked me I hung up the phone and started jumping up and down, I was soooo excited!

Well after hearing some of your music this week, I’m really excited about it, because it’s quite different I think…

I bet! Is this the kind of thing you had been waiting for since The Pussycat Dolls, the opportunity to showcase ALL of your talents? I guess this project gave you more creative flexibility…

SN: Ah huh, ah huh…

KW: Yeah! I think I was definitely searching for my next musical adventure. I’d been working with quite a lot of people in London, LA, Texas and what not… and it wasn’t really until I met Spencer that everything really clicked and felt right… and the purpose behind the music and the type of trip that we wanted to have was there. I mean, the name of the album is 111, it’s the sign that always tells me I’m in the right place and kind of helps me follow the right direction. When we had our first sole lunch to talk about working together, I got in my car to leave and he was in front of me in his car and on his license plate was 111!

SN: I call it ‘Progressive Pop House’

56

So if you were to slot it into a certain genre if you like, where would you say it sits… or doesn’t it? Does it broach many types of music? KW: PARTAY! [Laughs] SN: Yeah, Progressive Party, [Laughs]. A friend of mine just sent me this track and it’s actually called Progressive Party [Laughs]. It’s like pop music but it’s different, you know, I guess it’s like alternative pop maybe because it’s not fully dance music and it’s not fully house music. No, your right, it’s not… KW: Electro Collective, I think it’s been called before… SN: Yeah! Electro Collective, something like that. So instead it’s like half Swedish House Mafia and half Calvin Harris.

And how about you Kimberly, I guess this is your main focus too but have you got any other projects in the pipeline and will we still see you on our screens judging Got To Dance? KW: Yeah, I’m definitely still doing Got To Dance… and I also have an all natural mineral make-up line called ‘BM beauty’ that you can find at; bmbeauty.com (see page 125 for Kimberly’s fave BM beauty products and beauty tips). I have my own blogging site; beautifulmovements.com , so I do a lot of writing and what not but yeah! It’s pretty much all about the music! Designing costumes, dreaming big and making it happen! And when you say ‘Dreaming big!’ it really is isn’t it, because seeing you guys perform, you’ve got the music,

your dancing, costumes, make-up… You Kimberly, are a fantastic dancer as you have been a dancer for years… KW: Thank-you! But I also see you’ve got a few moves Spencer with the old ‘gloved hand dancing’ [Laughs]… SN: Nice… So do those moves ever travel down the body where you end up busting a few moves on the dance floor or do you just leave that to Kimberly? All: [Laughs] SN: You know, I’ve always loved dancing and when I was a kid, I used to be in dance competitions all the time with my friend… KW: Are you serious?! SN: Yeah but it wasn’t anything like, special but I used to love break dancing and stuff so… now it’s more dependant on how ‘loose’ I am to whether you catch me getting down. KW: That’s what really attracted me to this trip that we’re on… With HMATW’s, it all starts with the music but it’s making GREAT music so we can bring those stories to life on stage. It’s very conceptual; it’s bigger than life. Expressing the music through dance, through costumes, through it all… that’s what makes it so much fun!

NOIR m eet s

SN: Yeah! He’s been playing with Bowie since 73. He’s the guy who played the awesome piano solo on “Aladdin Sane” and he’s a good friend of mine. We actually have a project that we haven’t been able to do but he wants very much to be involved. So he was an inspiration too because I know he can bring all these awesome things, he’ll add a strings arrangement for us, you know, which then is one of our biggest songs of the album and erm… just different stuff, Daft Punk, you know. Song writing wise a lot of different people.

All: [LAUGHS]

Right I’d like to know what your biggest talents are BUT I’d like you Spencer to tell me about Kimberly’s and vice versa… also, tell me one thing that we wouldn’t know about them…

KW: Gosh! Spencer is one of the most creatively influential people within the music business that I’ve met. He’s been so inspiring from the very beginning. A very driven person who has a lot to say and hasn’t had a whole lot of momentum to say it and I feel like that’s, you know, with us two coming together, I feel like I have a platform that I can bring to the table, so I can open peoples eyes to just how talented Spencer is and he’s sooo deserving of it! And the beat boxing, MCing, the singing that he can do is ridiculous, the production he can do is amazing and the influences that he brings. Spencer is continuously introducing me to new music and opening my eyes to new worlds and new possibilities within the music world. And I would say if there’s anything people don’t know about Spencer… erm, I don’t think a lot of people would know that he plays the saxophone!

SN: Ok… For one, she’s very, very creative. She’s very smart [Kimberly looks embarrassed] Sorry guys, this must be a bit embarrassing… SN & KW: No, no, not at all [Laughs] SN: She’s really creative, she’s smart, she’s ambitious and she’s not afraid to take risks. You know, you need people that are ambitious and she’s very

SN: She knows how to eat! She surprises me every time. I’ll like look and order something, like we order burritos, we get Mexican food a lot and I’ll turn around and her burritos straight GONE! And I’m like, still working on mine and hers is gone… it’s like already gone! KW: I do love food! [Laughs] People reading this will be like… ‘Damn it! You mean she doesn’t starve herself to look that good!’ So how about Spencer, Kimberly?

“... you know the thing about Kim is... SHE EAT!”

Who inspires HMATW, your sound? SN: One, the name gives a lot of inspiration. Two, we are both influenced by a lot of different music… a lot of different things. In particular for this, I wanted to make everything sound really massive, so I got some awesome people to come and work with us like Mike Garson, he’s David Bowie’s musical director. KW: He’s amazing! Wow!

ambitious. I can count on her to follow through on things, which you know, is really important. Which gives me piece of mind because I’ve worked with a lot of people that you just can’t count on and you always have to carry people… I don’t have to carry I guess it must be really exciting her at all. She can hold her own, for the both of you now as you’ve which is awesome! found that other person that you can bounce off creatively… you’ve She’s more running alongside you, keeping you on your toes too huh? both got a voice now and creative flexibility! SN: Exactly, exactly… you know the other thing about Kim is… KW: Yeah and that someone you SHE EAT! can rely on is important.

“... it’s just really a collective effort. I always say, all the time, it’s a round table, you know, there is no one person that’s sitting there telling everyone else what to do. Yes, that must make all the difference as there are a lot of flakey people around… SN: Yeah, yeah, there’s a lot of people who ride coat tails and don’t DO anything… and don’t appreciate it either, you know... Yeah! So what’s coming up for HMATW’s, any up-coming performances? SN: World domination! World domination, that’s what’s coming up, that’s it, I’ll just write that down… world domination, full stop, that’ll do! KW & SN: [LAUGHS] SN: No, we’re coming back in June and we’ve got a lot of arenas, radio stations and then we’ll be back in July, playing The Wireless Festival, Oxygen and some other stuff. Great! The Wireless Festival will be good… SN: Yeah, I’m excited about that, as I don’t think people really understand what’s coming their way, in regards to what’s going to happen, you know… I mean the live shows. I’m excited because I can’t wait to share that with everybody.

You are definitely not one-dimensional are you; you have so many facets, the music, the dance, the performances… exciting stuff! SN: We’re gonna kill...

gonna

kill,

we’re

All: [Laughs] What roles do you both take in the collaboration? We know from what we see that you sing and you dance Kimberly, and you Spencer beat box and produce but of course there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes isn’t there… KW: Yeah, well it all starts with his music brain, the production of everything, then from there we get into the studio and we both write to our tracks and anything musically I go to Spencer for. Like, he’s the backbone when it comes to the music. I do my thing, I write, I sing, you know, make costumes, work on the choreography, visually come up with ideas. We have DJ’s that we work with who also do visual capabilities, so we’ve been working together, just coming up with concepts of different visuals that we can put together, that go with the music and help

tell the story of the music that we’re singing. So you both get heavily involved with the Creative Direction of it all, the vision of where you want it to go… SN: Yeah! You know it’s just really a collective effort. I always say, all the time, it’s a round table, you know, there is no one person that’s sitting there telling everyone else what to do. You need everybody and everybody’s opinion matters, you know. As well, with our DJ’s, they are really creative kids too and their ambitious as well, so it’s a collaborative effort for everything… all the way through. Her Majesty & The Wolves debut album 111 is out on July 11th. Their new single “Goodbye/Goodnight” is out now to download from itunes and if you weren’t lucky enough to catch them at The Wireless Festival you can see them perform live at the Oxygen Festival 2011 on Friday 8th July and T In The Park on the 9th July.

NOIR exc l u si v e lisha White brings the fire to our exclusive Noir fashion shoot and as Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model looms, Alisha talks to Heather B about being a BNTM...

The next season of BNTM Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model, starts on the 4th July… will you be watching?

and no family or friends to turn to, your completely on your OWN! Everything very quick pace and you hardly have time to think.

I don’t think I will be watching as I’ll be in New York. However I do want to see what girls go into the house and maybe the finals.

How did you overcome them?

You were 2nd, runner up on cycle 6 of Britain’s Next Top Model. When you first won your place on the show, did you ever dream you would be so successful?

Interview By HEATHER B

in mind its a TV show, To me it was 80% TV and 20% modelling and I didn’t even know that until after I watched the show on TV. Regardless of that I came in the show to model and most of the time just forgot the cameras.

I got use to it I had to.

You came across exactly as you are in real life on the show. Do you feel the show portrayed all the girls as they truly are?

“I never thought in a million years I would be a role model to other females, I mean I’m just me!

I mean just getting into the show was mind blowing for me and I didn’t even dream of coming 2nd. However once I was in the house there was no stopping me I wanted to WIN WIN WIN! At the end of the day that’s the name of the game, but 2nd place was a blessing I’ve done so much and I’m more than happy.

What were your personal highlights from being on the show? My highlight was meeting Jimmy Choo, he was so down to earth and gave me so much advice, WHAT A LOVELY MAN!!! Also all the travelling we did and living life in the fast lane.

What challenging or difficult moments were there during the show? Whatever career path you take you will always have challenges and difficult issues the whole programme was a hard task, your getting pushed into tasks you have never done before

You have become a real role model for young girls everywhere. Do you feel any pressure being the first black female model to be so successful on BNTM? I never thought in a million years I would be a role model to other females, I mean I’m just me! [Laughs] The amount of tweets and fan mail I get from ladies and guys brings me to tears!!! I mean sometimes I take time out to reflect because I didn’t know I would be such a impact on other peoples lives. Being the 1st black model to come top 3 In Britain’s Next Top Model history is even more pressure to do well, Britain’s Next Top Model was only the start for me and I will push forward to make sure I never let people and my supporters down.

How real are the events and people we saw on the show? I mean theses events and people are all planned before hand, I’m sure they’re all briefed on what to say to us and who to pin point etc. People need to bear

Before I went into the show I promise all my family and friends I would be myself!!! And I was. I didn’t play up for cameras or start problems for no reason it just wasn’t needed, I wasn’t looking for fame off the show either I just wanted to model. A lot of girls were portrayed as something their not, one being Amelia, she is the most down to earth girl I have EVER met in my life!!! So gentle and lovely, the show made her look like the complete opposite, but as I said its a TV show.

Have you stayed friends with any of the girls? Only Olivia & Amelia. Who are the rest again? [Laughs]

What advice would you give to someone entering into a show like this? Really think about if this is really something you want to do, you’re not only putting yourself in the public eye but your family also. Modelling is seriously not an easy job and you will be forever judged, you will not always be liked and you have to have a

NOIR exc l u si v e seriously THICK SKIN! It is a DOG EAT DOG industry. It’s far from glam! You have to become a business women over night!

How has being on the show influenced and helped your career? Britain’s Next Top Model sure was a stepping stone to my career, I was modelling before the show and stopped to study and get some grades behind me. So going into the show helped to jump start it again. However once I left the show I was

‘Yes’ to me you’re not the person I need to be talking to. I’m so ambitious its disgusting. I want the best for me and my family, I want my mum and dad to be happy and I want my little brother to be proud. I just want to be successful!

Who are your role models if any? My mother, she is the kindest most loving person I know, I love her sooooooooooo much! She is a great mother and has supported me all throughout Britain’s Next

What projects are on the agenda next for you, what can we look forward to? So many things. The answer is something I don’t even know... Things just happen and I’m completely like WOW did that just happen to me, so I think the answer has to be, lets both wait and see.

Quick Fire Questions: Is there a man in your life? Maybe [Laughs]

What do you look for in a guy? I like guys that know what they want from life, they have to be on the same wave length as me. I move at a quick pace and if you can’t keep up you will get left behind and I don’t do completely on my own and Top Model and even after when pick ups!

“Modelling will not last forever. my body will give one day, that’s why I studied to make sure I have something to fall back on.”

being an unsigned model I think I have done pretty well for myself. I have been blogged on over 50 blogs worldwide, I’ve covered a number of magazine interviews and shoots, I’ve been invited to lovely press parties. Britain’s Next Top Model didn’t make me (mum & dad did that) It just made me a lot better at what I do.

What were your ambitions from a young age? Was modelling always something that you wanted to do?

I really needed her. My mum and dad as a pair are my strength, without them I am nothing.

How would you describe your style? My style goes with my mood or event. However, I like colour blocking What is it that you admire as much as I like wearing about them? black... BUT I LOVEEE My mum & dad are just out of this ADOOOREEEEE HIGH world. They are GREAT, there are HEEELLLLLLSSSSS!!!!!! so many words to describe them but just not enough words either.

You have an AMAZING figure! Do you put it down to genes or do you have to work hard to keep in shape?

Who are your favorite designers? ROBERTO CAVALLI

Where do you love to shop? High street shops! are the best shops. Loving Modelling has always been my I don’t work out, however recently Zara and ASOS right now. 1st love but I also used to act and left school with an A*. I love the performing arts industry and I always want to stay in this field of work. Modelling will not last forever. My body will give one day, that’s why I studied to make sure I have something to fall back on.

What ultimately drives you? The word ‘No’ drives me, because if you’re not saying

I have cut out junk food completely. I have a little brother and a god child who I have to run after on a daily basis. I keep fit by running after them. [Laughs]

What is a typical day like in the life of Alisha White? Forever on the laptop or iphone, writing emails or checking emails, running around London going to castings and photo shoots. It’s fun really I love it! I truly love what I do.

What are you going to wear mostly this summer? Funky shorts. I will be blogging them so watch out for that! Defo be colour blocking this summer too. What are your top beauty tips? Always wash your makeup off before you go to bed. Alishawhite.wordpress.com Twitter - @MsAlishaWhite

ashion is a notoriously competitive industry. Bright young things who want to work in the industry soon learn that in order to make it each of them will have to stand out from all the other hopefuls. They do this through being unique and putting in a lot of hard work. Almost all

working for free or earning next to nothing. No matter how little money and time they have it is important that they dress with style and imagination, as well as practically – five inch heels are no good when dashing about for your boss! The best way to do this is by blagging uniform, scouring through sales

and knowing the best charity shops. I’ve been speaking to some young and super stylish people recently. Each of them are just beginning to ‘make it’ in the fashion world and they have all shared with me what keeps them motivated, as well as their top Summer style tips.

ATIENA, 20 PROFESSION: Freelance stylist and stylist Sebastian Kauffmann’s assistant INTERNED AT: Roland Mouret , The North Circular & Tank Magazine CAREER ICON: Well, there are many of them! I would appreciate the career of an actor as much as the career of a journalist. But I guess that styling wise I tend to admire stylists who stayed as close as possible to the idea of fashion as an art rather than something commercial. So someone like Isabella Blow although her career didn’t go as far as it probably could have, her idea of styling and how far she pushed it is something that really speaks to me and inspires me. Someone like Carine Roitfeld as well, I think she really proved that styling could have a message. Through provocative images, she made us all realise how strong an image could be and that clothes really have a language. But I guess that the dream career would be Grace Coddington’s. Her work is just so beautiful, so true. Some of her shoots for me are actual art.

Finally, I really appreciate the stylist Venetia Scott. She probably is one of the most critical stylists in the industry, but reading her interviews, she really reminds us to question this job and what is becoming of it. Or sometimes a positive interview, a new song, a film, or a new editorial that will speak

CAREER HIGHLIGHT: Meeting in Rio with Hans Freuer and shooting with Ellen Von Unwerth. I used to collect both of these photographers’ pictures when I started being interested in fashion! It was quite a shock to actually meet them! STYLE ICON: Well that would just be an endless list. What I can say is that I don’t believe that I have one single style icon. It is something that changes everyday. I’m not the kind of person who stays true to one style, or not yet. I like to think of it in terms of characters. So one day it could be Audrey from

Another will be more of a boudoir inspired one, so Fifi Chachnil lingerie, Gyspsy Lee Rose and Dita Von Teese... It’s always mixed inspiration that will come together one day. “We have a lot of fun because we genuinely love each other, and I think people see that”

Interview By LEANNE MILLIGAN

N

OIR chats to Kevin McHale (aka Artie Abrams from Glee) about the success of the show, his cast mates, how he nearly blew his first audition for Glee and what’s next for Kevin.

Can you take us through the audition process for Glee? What was it like? It was like any other audition, but with the addition of singing. The first audition I felt I totally blew it with the singing. I messed up “Let it Be” by the Beatles. Who does that!? Luckily, Robert, the casting director saw something in me when I did the scene. Two days later I auditioned for Ryan, Brad, Ian, Dante etc. I was the first Artie they saw. I had to wait six weeks to test though, which was torture! I met Chris & Jenna when there….and here we are!

Did you ever think the show would be as successful as it is? Why do you think people have embraced the show so much? We had NO idea. We had nothing to compare it to. All we knew is that we loved it, and hoped that there were a few people out there that had the same sense of humour that we did. I think people latched onto

it because it was a musical that was really edgy comedic alley, and that hadn’t really been seen before.

we just did and I think that can be seen in the show. As lame as it is, we spend all of our time on set and off set together. We’re each others best friends.

How would you describe your What songs would you love character Artie Abrams in to sing on the show in three words? future episodes? Naive, ghetto, awesomestpersonever.

You guys look like you have so much fun on set. Is the show as much fun to make as it is to watch, or is it more work than people would expect? We have a lot of fun because we genuinely love each other, and I think people see that. That being said I think that’s what helps us get through the long days. Because yes it is a great product in the end but it is made up of a lot of preparation. Not just from the cast, but our brilliant crew who have been there from day one. And our writers/producers/creators. It is such a family and tight unit that all parties need to be working equally.

What’s it like working with such a great ensemble cast? Did you all click immediately? Luckily we did click immediately. I don’t know if that’s normal, but

My dream was to do Michael Jackson, and I said I wouldn’t ask for anything again, so since I got to do two MJ songs in back to back episodes, I’ll keep that promise!

Do you ever get star-struck with guests on the show? I thought I’d be much cooler around Gwyneth, but the first episode she was on, each day I grew more and more star-struck. It was the opposite of how one should normally be. I love her, we all love her. She’s become family which is crazy to say. She’s just brilliant, I could go on and on and on and on...

You must get a lot of attention from fans of the show. How have you handled your new celebrity status? I’m definitely not a celebrity. I get recognized from the show, but I don’t let it control my life. it’s just amazing that people watch the show. I think being at the White House and meeting the Obama’s

and seeing Amber sing the national anthem on the balcony, next to the Obama’s where I recorded her on her phone. Everyone was crying, it was such a surreal moment. That and also, doing “Thriller” for the Super Bowl episode. My dream being able to sing Michael Jackson, and getting to do that with 30 million people watching was insane.

So what is Kevin McHale like? It’s funny, being back in fake high school, I’ve assumed my real high school role again. This time around there aren’t really cliques like in actual high school, but I’m definitely more of a neutral person. I get along with everyone.

When not working, what do you love to do? Now that summer’s coming up, I’m a beach bum, and I love to travel. Any free time I have, I travel. It’s an amazing thing, I never come back the same. Seeing other places teaches you so much.

What type of roles/ characters would you love to play in the future? Anyone you would love to work with? Anything, like Artie, where it’s unexpected and challenging!

“For us, we talk a lot, we laugh a lot, and we have a lot of good sex!” Interview By LEANNE MILLIGAN

B

est known as ‘Scary Spice’ from well, the biggest girl band ever, Mel B (Melanie Brown if you didn’t already know) is one sassy and fun lady. Currently acting as judge on X Factor Australia, Mel is injecting her honest and fun personality into the show. So I caught up with Mel to chat Spice Girls memories, the secrets to a successful marriage, baby bumps and how she keeps that hot body in shape.

Hi Mel! I was listening to some Spice Girls tracks as I was preparing for this interview and boy did it bring back some great memories for me. How do you feel nowadays when you hear one of your songs? I love it, because we wrote them all. So not only do I have fond memories of touring the song, I also have fond memories of being in the studios writing the songs with the other girls.

How would you describe your time with the Spice Girls? Do you have any regrets? Any highlights that stand out? 76 00

My time with the Spice Girls was

NOIR m eet s amazing! We got to tour the world meet interesting, fun, crazy people. For example, Nelson Mandela invited us all over to his house for a private dinner. We enjoyed peanut butter on toast with William and Harry at Buckingham Palace. What can I say I have so many memories that I shared with my four best friends! Regrets, I don’t really have any, because what is the point? What’s done is done.

In a movie about the Spice Girls, who would play each member? Zoe Saldana would play me. Jesse J would play Mel C. Kate Bush would play Geri. Angelina Jolie would play Victoria. And Kate Hudson would play Emma.

I have no idea. It’s all about timing and what they have to offer.

You have one hot body lady! What do you do to keep in such great shape?

And you are also expecting another child this summer – many congrats to you both! How has this pregnancy been for you? Have you guys thought of any names yet?

It’s boring but it works; work out and eat healthy. And most importantly, laugh a lot.

Haven’t thought of any names. I don’t know if it’s a boy or girl, but I’m enjoying this time to eat exactly what I want and not workout [laughs]. Stephen and I are soooo excited! We can’t wait to meet him/her. One thing I do know, is that it moves A LOT!

You and Stephen have been married for a while now. What are the keys to a successful relationship?

This year is going to be a big year for you. First of all congratulations on being a judge on X Factor Australia. What type of judge do you think you’ll be?

For us, we talk a lot, we laugh a lot, and we have a lot of good sex! But above all, he is my best friend.

Well, let me put it this way, I am loved and hated all at the same time. Honest and funny is an understatement. And I am having so much fun just being me!

To be patient and listen to him, which of course are two very difficult things to do sometimes. But I’m getting there.

What is the X Factor to you? What do the contestants need to do/have to impress you? X Factor gives us and the public, a chance to find somebody with that extra something. Where we can watch it grow and develop into superstar status, hopefully. They don’t have to be perfect to start off with, but they have to make you want to watch them. It’s almost indescribable, but once you see it, you just know.

Girl bands on the UK version never do that well – what would be your advice for this year’s girl band contestants. What do they need to do?

What has Stephen taught you about yourself?

What would be your advice on feeling confident and sexy? Work out, eat healthy and laugh a lot.

What advice would you give an 18 year old you? Take more personal pictures and wear more outrageous clothes!

What life goals do you still want to achieve? First of all, continue to have a happy and healthy family life and marriage. Stay open to change, do more music, produce more shows, and keep life creative, silly, and fun.

SPOTLIGHT ON....MEL B

You currently live in LA. What do you love most about LA and what do you miss most about the UK?

FAVOURITE FOOD: Right now, everything and anything. (Indian food)

FAVOURITE SPICE GIRLS SONG: and “Holler”

I love the weather opportunities that can be had in LA. And in the UK, I miss a good bag of fish and chips.

Has living in LA helped with your fitness routine? Do you ever feel under pressure with how you look living there? I’ve been living there for 8 years, and I only started working out 4 years ago, when I had my last baby. And I love it! I’m 35, and I think when a women hits her 30’s it’s now or never. And I opted for the now. I like looking and feeling fit for me. Which only benefits my relationship!

THE SONG I’M LOVING RIGHT NOW: “Breakeven” by the Script ONE THING YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ME IS... when I travel I pack all of my clothes on hangers. Bet you didn’t know that! Very OCD. LIFE IS... bloody marvelous! Even if it’s only in my head! 77

R

ich , authentic and with plenty of spirit; the Navajo and Aztec-inspired prints and relics are practically spiralling out of control this year. Traditional designs in earthy tones are aplenty, bold jewels add ayers to this too-much-is-never-enough aesthetic, and festival favourites of fringing and tassels are in abundance. On the catwalk, known print-lovers clearly shed some influence. At Diane Von Furstenberg, historical geometric shapes (square spirals, graffiti-esque designs) led the way. Not knowing where one print starts and the other finishes due to apt layering, Diane kept legs bare and feet sandaled. Anna Sui, on the other hand, sent her models down the runway with her signature calf-length cowboy boots and leggings combo. Burgundy hues, neutral prints and denim touches kept you guessing, and a profusion of feathers were added for good measure. Missoni, renowned for their use of colour and pattern, took the trend one step further with flowing skirts and

ponchos, as well as beach-appropriate body wraps. This world traveller explains the trend’s appeal. It’s escapism at its very best: dreams of distant countries, other cultures and the haunt of wanting to be anywhere but here. And high-street stores and online boutiques have tapped into that. Topshop’s Aztec shorts are growing ever-more-popular in the blogging world, and ASOS have revelled in Aztec print rucksacks, dresses and sleeveless tops. Miss Selfridge and Yayer are pushing the printed poncho: forget the oversized hoodie at your go-to festival this year, the rustic and wonderful poncho is the way forward and oh-so-toasty on a nippy summer evening. Oh, and don’t forget the essential fringing either – be it a bag, statement necklace or cheeky crop top. With such a plethora of choices, having an Aztec or Navajo-free wardrobe is going to be a tough task in itself this summer. And with Isabel Marant paving the way for an equally cultural Autumn/Winter, investing might not be such a bad idea. Just think, even if you’re not going away this summer, you can still be a brave hearted (and ever-so- stylish) traveller

the

Interview by LEANNE MILLIGAN Comedy Store in London and

H

I went down well. I thought,

e may be the newest that’s a good moment. As soon comedian on the block as I realised I could do it I then quit uni but Jack Whitehall professionally, in Manchester. is sure as hell giving the oldtimers a run for their money. Was it difficult when you first NOIR chats to Jack about started out? following comedians into the toilet, doing a stand-up gig Yeah it was, because I wasn’t on a plane and tells us what very good! When I first started I did my first ever gig in front of makes a great comedian. all my friends but they laughed When did you realise that you had what it takes to be a comedian professionally?

even though I was crap. Then my second gig was in front of my friends again and I was getting more confident in front

of them, but then as soon as I did a gig in front of strangers, I died on my arse. I used to be really deadpan and wear a trenchcoat on stage because I thought it made me look quirky. But I got so hot in the trenchcoat, I used to feel dizzy when I came off stage so I ditched it.

Who were your comedy idols growing up? Are there any comedians nowadays who you rate or love working with? I get flustered with Jack Dee actually, I love him, he’s so good. I played the Comedy Gala with him and he’s very nice. Also I love League of Gentlemen, it was my favourite show at school. Growing up too, I loved Steve Coogan and Alan Partridge. At the Edinburgh Festival, I followed him into the toilet so I could pee next to him.

You are now a Guinness World Records holder for hosting the ‘Highest stand up comedy gig in the world’, on a British Airways flight in support of Comic Relief alongside Dara O Briain and Jon Richardson. How did you find this experience? It must have been one of your craziest comedy venues yet?

80

It was quite weird. We had a big list of things we weren’t meant to

NOIR m eet s Has being funny helped you with the ladies? Probably not. I attempt to diffuse awkward situations by trying to be funny which doesn’t score you points.

If you had to take one lady out on a date who would it be and what would you do? I’d take Claire Balding to Café Rouge. That’s what I’d choose.

When and where are you happiest?

talk about but giving a comic a list of things you’re not meant to talk about is like giving a comic a list of things you want to talk about. I did jokes about the BA cabin crew air strike with the main boss of BA sat right next to me, but what can they do? No-one can take off stage. Someone tried to heckle me too actually and I told him that if he wanted to do it again, he would have to push his little button and ask the cabin crew for assistance. He shut up then.

I think honesty on stage. Great comics are ones where you’ve got to know them by the end of the set and you feel like you know part of them. It’s great to achieve that and also be very funny. There are loads of great comics around; I love Tom Stade and he always makes me laugh as does Mickey Flannagan. They both always look like they’re at the top of their game on stage and completely at ease. They’re creating a connection with the audience wherever they are.

How do you prepare for a stand-up tour? Where do you get your material from?

Do you get asked a lot on the street to tell jokes? Where’s the weirdest place a Whatever’s going on in my fan has approached you? life. When I lived at home, my material was focused on that, when I’m in a relationship, I write about that. Whatever experiences you’re going through I guess. It is a bit weird, because you’re going through something and all you’re thinking is if you can use that for material. Even when you’re affected by tragedy, there’s a part of my brain that thinks, ‘can I make this funny?’

What do you think makes a great comedian?

I am always asked to tell jokes. When people tell me jokes they’re normally either ones you’ve heard about a 100 times or racist. I politely laugh and run away as I’m a coward. My friend’s parents do it as well - any function I’m at with my friends, they always ask me to tell jokes and there’s always someone who loiters in the corner, wanting to come over and tell me a joke he’s been sitting on for the last half hour which takes 5 minutes to tell, he fucks up the punch line and then laughs at himself.

My mother’s house playing Fifa with my brother – that’s a good place to be. I’m better at it than him so I always beat him. And the security of being home with my mum is good.

What scares you? Really intelligent people, because they make me feel stupid and I always try to be intellectual and fall flat on my face.

Finish the sentence. Jack Whitehall is... Probably going to read this article at his mum’s house as she buys every single magazine he does an interview in. She keeps them in a little file and files them away.

BRIT A BR OA D:

T

NYC By ROSIE SAVAGE

he Statue of Liberty, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Times Square (hello Naked Cowboy), The Empire State Building... a greatly anticipated trip to New York was full to the brim of touristy endeavours. And while the likes of Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg – some cheap vintage buys, effortlessly cool people, the best burger ever – and the infamous Meatpacking District certainly entice anybody with a pulse, it’s sometimes the simple things in life that leave you with the biggest smile on your face. Anybody else ever dreamed of cycling around Central Park? All you need is $25 to hire a bike for the day, a delicious picnic, ideally some muscular power in your thighs and, well, being in New York between 59th and 8th is a good start too. Due to picking a cycle hire centre that was a good few blocks away from here, my friend Robyn and I had our work cut out. Let’s just say that Americans don’t like it when you cycle on the pavement. Feeling a little overwhelmed as to where to begin, a little meander around the southernmost part of the park made us stumble across Central Park Zoo; a beautiful little hideaway that houses monkeys, seals, polar bears and penguins. The latter’s feeding time caught our attention for at least half an hour and our cameras practically sighed. The petting zoo was a giggle as well: feeding eager goats and retreating from a beady-eyed llama being the highlights. From here, Sheep Meadow beckoned. As did our grumbling bellies. Turkey and brie baguette, 90

Pringles, half-melted/half-squashed cupcakes, a Granny Smith apple and a thirst-quencher by the name of Welch’s made the perfect feast. Enjoying the clear blue sky and experiencing a we-can’tbelieve-we’re-actually-here moment, the incomparable sounds of Julian Casablancas and Caleb Followill kept us company. A tiresome, to say the least, bike ride followed where we embarked on the park’s circumference. New York conjures up images of flat terrain, so we didn’t anticipate any struggle. We were wrong. We took our first (ahem) rest stop on the west side of the Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy Reservoir; a water expanse of 106 acres that is completely breathtaking; a complete oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Strawberry Fields, the John Lennon tribute, was bursting with people. The famous ‘Imagine’ mosaics were covered in flowers, a Liverpool football scarf, apples with his face on, photographs, a walrus figurine and what appeared to be marshmallows. Go figure. Knowing his apartment was looking upon us, we stayed a while before setting off once more. Leaving Central Park behind, having come full circle, was more than a little heartbreaking. The sun was shining high, people were still making their way inside and faint music drifted out from a nearby green. It looked like the party was just getting started, and we wished we could have stayed forever

INSIDE THE LIFE OF... AMBER ATHERTON Interview By LEANNE MILLIGAN

I

n our exclusive shoot with Made in Chelsea star Amber Atherton, we give you an insight into this up-and-coming entrepreneur and talk about what filming the show is really like as she showcases her style in our glam photoshoot

Do you enjoy filming Made in Chelsea? Er... yeh! It’s a lot of fun joking around with the rest of the cast and the crew as well and we’re normally in quite nice places or on location, so sort of like little mini road trips all the time, so it’s fun!

How real life are the events we see on the show? Everything that we do is...well, our reactions are real to every situation they put us in. So I would say maybe like 60% of places we go to are places that we would normally go to and 40% are potentially not.

What is the real life of Amber like? Describe a typical day. Erm... god! Well I’ll describe the last two days... I was up till 3am editing a look book for jewellery, so I normally work long, weird hours. Then up again in the morning to do emails and speak to my interns for MYFLASHTRASH and sort out business for the day. Then maybe go to a

Dress, shoes and jewellery: Ambers own

NOIR exc l u si v e photoshoot or interview, onto meets with jewellery designers, visiting jewellery designers studios and I’ll always be on my Blackberry through-out the day. Go into university for a lecture…then maybe an event or something at night, more emails and then bed! [Blackberry buzzes]And as you can see my Blackberry does not stop buzzing!

This is a busy year for you with your own jewellery boutique MYFLASHTRASH, your fashion degree and style blog you and Rosie [from Made in Chelsea] are setting up. You must be one ambitious lady. What drives you?

and they don’t think that anything is unachievable. All tech entrepreneurs... you know, obvious ones such as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Natalie Massenet, and erm, Tamara Mellon.

Where do you love to shop?

How would your friends describe you?

What are your top beauty secrets you have learned?

[Thinks for a second] As none stop, ambitious... and er, probably quite fast talking, [laughs]... yeah... sorry I haven’t had a coffee yet! [laughs]

Weeeell... My top three would be... When you put mascara on to sort of zig zag it at the lashes so it gives volume to the lashes, white eyeliner in your eyes to make them look wider... and I just swear by Dermalogica and Aveda, basically all of their skincare products.

“I definitely look up to successful, daring business men & women, who aren’t afraid to take risks.”

Do you know, I really have no idea what drives me or why I am so ambitious... I think it may potentially be something to do with growing up in Hong Kong and being surrounded by such a sense of energy and wealth, that has just pushed me on to be independent and successful in my own right, erm... so yeah, and MYFLASHTRASH has just been nominated for jewellery retailer of the year at the UK Jewellery Awards. I’ve just launched a new website so that’s coming along really well and yeah, so I’m just trying to juggle everything at once at the moment but I sort of feel like your youth is when you have your most energy and your most drive so I’m sort of just taking advantage of that.

Do you have any role models? I definitely look up to successful, daring business men & women, who aren’t afraid to take risks.

What is it that you admire about them? Just their ruthlessness and their sort of confidence in themselves

Is there a man in your life? Not at the moment.

What do you look for in a guy? Just a sort of self confidence, self belief and a drive to achieve. A sort of passion and then I guess, a sense of humour and good looks.

How would you describe your style? I don’t know! It changes! I’m really fickle with my style, it just depends on what I feel like when I get up. I normally wear trousers or dresses. It’s sort of a big contrast but I don’t know, one day it might be quite bohemian in a maxi-dress and another I might have to go to a lot of meetings, so I like a lot of designers like Markus Lupfer and Helmut Lang which sort of give you that tailored edge but still for my age, as often I find I can’t really pull off some of the older work women looks, so I just try and aim for professional but age appropriate.

I love Bluebird as I think they’ve got great creative designers, Matches and Browns for select investment purchases every now and again and otherwise Zara.

What will you be wearing loads of this summer? I’m really into men’s silk pyjamas, sort of like palazzo pants. Yeah, and then sort of like, some colour blocking, I’m really into corals and pinks, so those colours and some ridiculously high heels.

What’s next for you? What’s next...is reading up about Season 2 of Made in Chelsea but I wouldn’t put that first... def first priority is MYFLASHTRASH moving onto phase two of my websites development, looking for investment for Flash Trash and looking for a showroom, expanding that company and finishing my degree. You know it changes everyday, different things get thrown at me, so I think what’s next is to continue looking for new opportunities and taking advantage of everyday! I’m actually launching my own jewellery collection tomorrow called Monsoon Palace, which is a collection of chokers and ear cuffs. All made out of Rose Gold and Gun Metal Silver so that will be available on MYFLASHTRASH from September and in stores.

GEMMA CAIRNEY ON .. .

MU SI C F E S T I VAL S ! Interview By LAURA SMITH

R

adio 1Xtra presenter Gemma Cairney certainly knows her stuff when it comes to music, fashion and style! As the BBC’s roving reporter for Glastonbury she has guided us through three years of the legendary festival and has also presented alongside the equally stylish Miss Chung on T4’s Frock Me. Outside the studio, she also works as a stylist and has performed her magic on Florence and the Machine and the Pigeon Detectives. Our favourite, Image courtesy of BBC fashionable festival-goer gives us her finest festival moments and her I saw the Strokes three times at tips for surviving them! three different festivals and fell You’ve been the BBC’s roving reporter at Glastonbury for the past few years; what’s it been like working at Glastonbury? Mind-blowing! Glastonbury is the father of British festivals and you can feel that in its air. You feel free to do whatever you please and no one will judge you. Nowhere else in the world does it feel so good to be so dirty (in the muddy sense of course). To be asked to illustrate this magic via the TV is a true honour and the only telly job I’ve felt truly represents everything about my real personality. There, I’ve talked fashion, walked a tight rope, screamed, danced hard with the joker and kissed Florence Welch on the lips all with a camera in my face!

What’s been your most memorable festival experience? Well, all of the above were pretty poignant but I think being unofficially recruited (or so I thought) to be my friend’s backing dancer on the Pyramid stage – one of the main stages – one year at Glastonbury in exchange for a ticket. When she asked me, I really thought she meant just ‘sort of’ jump around in the background whilst

she sang. But before I knew it, in thelead up to the festival I was attending dance rehearsals and getting fitted for a skeleton outfit! I am no trained dancer, but I learned my steps in time. It involved a lot of shuffling and my body shaking with laughter. That was during my many years of ‘The Blag’!

Who has been the best live act you’ve seen perform, and who are your festival favourites? I feel guilty to keep referring to Glasto because many other festivals are dear to my heart, but my favourite is Jay Z, who left me a startled, awe ridden, hip hop obsessive when he performed – amongst the controversy – in 2008. You could feel the crowd’s anticipation: ‘Will it work? Won’t it?’ and despite his presence when you saw his face for the first time on stage you could feel his nerves. He aced it and the excitement was INCREDIBLE! Other festival favourites include Vampire Weekend (my friend cut her lip open last year at Latitude because we were dancing so hard). Florence and the Machine is just illuminating every single time (I think it’s because she’s an actual mythical fairy that lives in a tree). Oh and I had the most amazing summer in 2006 where

utterly in love. Oh and that same year I saw Re- gina Spektor and found her wonderful too … this is a dangerous question; I could go on FOREVER!

Do you have any advice for our readers when it comes to surviving a weekend at a music festival – what are your Do’s and Don’ts? DON’T wear anything too tight and constricting – you’ll want to roll around. DO seek out the alternatives to the headliners that persuaded you to get tickets in the first place. There is a lot to be found in comedy/poetry tents. DON’T believe you’ve fallen in love in two days; it’s likely the ‘free love’ has taken over. DO meet some of your best friends of the future. DON’T shoot your load and get too trashed the first night, I know it’s hard, but the hangover WILL leave you feeling guilty. DO eat some good food. Festivals aren’t talked about because of food, but I’ve got amazing memories of oysters in the woods, amazing Thali, and ostrich burger. Gemma Cairney will be bringing us all the inside action and gossip from Glasto when she reports live from the festival for the BBC this summer and you can catch her show on Radio 1Xtra weekdays from 1-4pm!

TEN Things you didn’t know about

CANDICE ACCOLA

Interview by LEANNE MILLIGAN. Photographer KATE ROMERO. Stylist KATE LAMM

98

My childhood was constantly filled with activities. I was always taking dancing or singing classes after school; I was surprisingly goal-oriented for such a little kid. I came home at 10 years old announcing to my mother that I’d be holding auditions for my girl group at our house later in the week. I’m just grateful that my parents always took my dreams seriously. They never used the word impossible. I was also very fortunate to travel a lot as a kid. Before I’d even graduated high school I’d travelled to France, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Thailand, The Philippines and walked The Great Wall of China. My parents understood the kind of education that could come from experience. I’m thankful that we had the means to be able to travel like that. My parents were always so respectful to me that I’d get too much of a ‘guilt gut’ if I attempted to rebel. I wasn’t the perfect angel, but I never did anything to intentionally piss off my parents. And I don’t think I’ve even been quiet a day in my life.

do I truly enjoy going to work everyday but I’ve had the opportunity to learn and grow so much while working within the kind of scheduling that comes with television. Caroline has given me the chance to build a true foundation that I will have with me throughout my career.

There are a lot of funny moments that happen onset. They are usually pretty simple... fudged lines, tripping, crew members walking in the shot cause they forgot we’re rolling... the usual mishaps that keep long days feeling not so long.

Julie Plec has opened up about Season Three of The Vampire Diaries saying that it will be the season of the originals. To tell you the truth, that’s all I got! We’re just as much in the dark as the viewers. I can say confidently that though a lot has happened on our show in two seasons, the writers have made it clear that they are nowhere near running out of killer material!

Real life fit doesn’t always par up with TV fit so for a girl who loves her wine and bacon, I decided to hire a trainer in Atlanta. She keeps me on my toes and sets a high bar. I always leave my workouts with her feeling ready to conquer the world. I’ve also gotten into bike riding on my days off.

In my free time I spend time with friends. Go to festivals, concerts, spend hours at bookstores and see movies. I do pretty much what people do on the weekends.

What I find exciting about this field of work is that it’s impossible to reach your peak. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow and I expect that the entirety of what’s to come in my career will always feel like I’m still in my “early acting experience.”

I don’t know how to describe my fashion.

What’s funny is I really feel I got the role of Caroline from all the other auditions that I didn’t get. My father would always tell me, “No doesn’t mean never, it just means not yet.” It took a lot of no’s to get my YES but gosh darn it, it was well worth it! Not only

And I’m not “just saying that.”

To stay in shape, I am very aware of what I’m putting into my body.

I’d describe my early acting experiences as educational, humbling and scary with a side of thrilling.

I got the role of Caroline in The Vampire Diaries by simply auditioning, not that the auditioning process was simple by any means!

think I could continue to date him.

I wear whatever makes me feel good. I’m in my hiatus right now and my entire suitcase is basically filled with dresses. Hmmm... I guess you could describe my style as seasonal.

I’d love to take on roles of very strong or very vulnerable women. Women that have a voice and characteristics. I love simple love stories just as much as the next guy, but if I could choose in a perfect world, I want to focus on finding female characters that define what it really means to be a woman sometimes.

If a guy ever bought me jewellery, a bag or shoes, I don’t

“It’s a massive dance music party with the most colourful crowd this side of Studio 54” Interview by LEANNE MILLIGAN

Jodie Harsh is legendary in the nightclub world, hosting club nights across the globe as well as ‘This is Circus’ in London. NOIR chats to Jodie about how she got to where she is today. Jodie is at Lovebox with ‘This Is Circus’ this year and also hosting Room Service in Ibiza every Monday for 11 weeks of the summer.

What made you decide to become Jodie Harsh? I was bored at university so I started wearing make-up and wig and heels and working part time in nightclubs. The name was given to me and I kind of hate it, but it’s stuck.

questioning my very existence. But to be honest, I love what I do and I work hard to maintain it, I wouldn’t change much. You get what you work for.

You came out as gay when you were a teenager. Was it difficult for you to tell your family and friends? What Who or what inspires you? would be your advice for These will all sound like complete other people who are and utter clichés, but...travel, considering ‘coming out’? friends, art, advertising, music, Madonna. Ugh, I am shuddering! But it’s true.

How did Circus come into being? What can people expect from Circus? It’s a massive dance music party with the most colourful crowd this side of Studio 54. It is the coolest club you’ll ever go to, the best soundtrack you’ve ever heard, the best friends you’ve ever had, the most dynamic night out you’ll go to.

I never really had to come out, it was done for me, and that wasn’t great, but you can’t change the past. Take a deep breath, believe in yourself, and just have the balls to be yourself. If people don’t like it, fuck ‘em. Keep it a secret from people if it might cause actual harm but don’t keep it a secret from yourself.

Is there a Mr Harsh on the scene? What type of guy do you look for?

What are the keys to a Jodie I wish! There isn’t though. I love a Latino. Spanish, Brazillian, Italian... Harsh-style great party? bring it on!

In terms of organising something that people like, you have to give the customer what they want. I get feedback every day from people I work with and people who pay to come and experience my music, my parties, my whatever. That is really important to me.

What have been your career highlights so far? Playing Ibiza, organising festivals, meeting music (and actual) royalty...I have done so much, I am very lucky. But I think you make your own luck

Is there a downside to being Jodie Harsh?

How would you describe your look? Where do you usually buy your outfits? I would say I’m quite directional but trend-led - fashion conscious. I love Ashish, Bora Aksu, Ashley Isham, Manjit Deu, Jermey Scott and Unconditional for clothing, and Louis Vuitton, Goyard and Fendi for expensive accessories. But I have more fun in a sparkly find from a vintage flee market than I do in a fucking Givenchy gown sometimes. I do love catwalk fashion but I love dressing up full stop and that doesn’t have to be expensive.

Do you inhabit a different persona when dressing in Masses of make-up creates angry drag or is it a further skin! Nothing that can’t be fixed extension of yourself? with a facial once a month. The heels have messed up my posture and the late nights followed by early flights have often left me

I switch on my work persona, as anyone would when they walk into the office really. My

office is a dance floor and that’s when you see me in my ‘suit’. I’ve been called a bitch before by people who make decisions after experiencing someone for a matter of minutes, but we all know that stands for Babe In Total Control of Herself, right?!

What would we find most surprising about you? My wardrobe, my music and my emails are completely unorganised at the moment. And I like it.

In 10 years time I will be… In a bigger office with a bigger team, and probably taking even less holiday time. In actual fact I will probably live in LA and Ibiza for parts of the year.

JODIE HARSH ON... FASHION: My Style is… Individual, brave, unforgiving. My style icons are… The beautiful and damned of nightlife past and present. MUSIC: When I’m getting ready I always listen to… House music. I cannot get enough of it. I really can’t stand… Dubstep and drum and base. Nothing against it, just not my thing. PARTYING: Five people I would always want at a party… Kate Moss, Madonna, a gaggle of trannies, the DJ Kris Di Angelis, Matthew Williamson Five I wouldn’t want… Hitler, a dubstep DJ, a pair of homophobes, Katie Price My party survival tip would be… Don’t take coke and you’ll have more fun. The songs which always get people on the dancefloor are… Basement Jaxx and Chemical Brothers.

The wire at the front is sitting bang smack against your ribcage and should not sit on your breast or poke out.

Also the wire should then sit at your breast bone at the sides and not on your actual breast or sit too far under your armpits. So if it’s sitting on your breast it is too small a cup, sitting past your breast bone and under your armpit equals too big a cup.

Your breasts should be enclosed in the bra with no wrinkling in the fabric and a smooth line where the bra meets the breast and when you lift your arms your breasts should remain inside the bra. A big sign that you are wearing the wrong size cup is when you have breast spilling over the sides or top (aka four boobs, which means cup is too small).

Boux Avenue on... buying linger ie for your par tner Size Matters: This is the most

obvious sticking point when it comes to lingerie shopping, and also the trickiest to guess - so don’t. Be sneaky, have a little rummage through her lingerie drawer when she isn’t looking (just don’t get caught red handed). Look at more than one style, sometimes us ladies wear different sizes - if this is the case, go for the most popular. Also check her dress size too - handy when buying the matching knickers.

Colour Counts: Once your detective

work has been put to good use getting the right size, next step is colour. If you don’t already, pay attention when she is undressing - what colours does she normally wear? She may wear classic black and white for everyday, but probably won’t want these styles as a gift.

Check out her frocks and try matching her lingerie to her favourite party dress for totally glamorous dressing up.

Fabric for Her: Next time you see her lingerie hanging on the washing line, have a peek at the types of fabrics she prefers to wear next to her skin. It may vary between season, for example some women prefer to wear lighter cotton garments in the summer, but in winter may be enticed by embellished, heavier fabrics. Style Stalker: A little time invested in

thinking about her style won’t go amiss either. How does she like to dress? Is she girly, romantic and feminine, does she go for full voltage glamour and vamp things up? Or is she understated, classic and cool?

Avoid: Control, reducing, enhancing lingerie. Buying these could cause some upset, unless she usually wears said styles. Remember Remember: It’s not for you, it’s for her.

Extra

Brownie Points: When buying lingerie, don’t forget those little finishing touches that make your present all the more perfect. Does the set you have plumped for have matching suspender belt? If so, how about some sexy stockings too? If not, how about a sexy garter or teasing eye mask instead? Easily complete her look, so that she can dress up without going shopping for more.

With a CV that

Here, the talented and captivating woman speaks to Heather B about her amazing career, the ups and downs of fame, and teaching students at her Beauty Queen Workshops.

LO UI SE C ONS TAD Louise, you have what from the outside has been and still is, a phenomenal career! What have been your highlights? I would say that they are more stepping stones. When you first start and you do your first fashion show as Chief Make-up Artist and it’s a success, you think to yourself ‘YES! I can do fashion shows!’ I remember in my mid twenties when I was given my first West End musical and it seemed the most incredible feat to do something that big. It was called

Time and had Cliff Richard and Sir Laurence Olivier in it… I don’t know, it just seemed enormous but I did it and I thought ‘YES! I can do West End musicals!’ So there are lot’s of things along the way. Like Pop Videos, then you do someone famous and you think ‘If I can get through this, that will be it’, but every time you do someone famous or some big thing, it takes you up in your career and people then look up to you, for that. really tough film to get through but because it was such a success, I got known for my work on it and from that I was given the Ads… and doing the ads was the biggest learning curve ever, because suddenly I was ‘in front’ of the camera instead of behind the camera… and suddenly for the first time, I realised how to be a good Make-up Artist! Because when you are in front of the camera you know what it is you need from your Make-up Artist. Whereas before, I used to enjoy

So you feel that this is a big part of being a successful Make-up Artist. Providing support throughout a job?

hie Ellis Bext

p From top: So

Yes. But within reason. You can’t go up to someone and say, ‘God, you were brilliant, you were wonderful’ as that’s the director’s job. You just secure them as far as, ‘Let me study your make-up, no, it’s perfect. You’re looking good.’ It’s none of your business to touch anyone else’s department. You only touch your department.

doing the make-up and enjoy talking to everybody… but being in front of the camera taught me that I wanted to see the Make-up Artists face, I wanted to look at her and her to re-assure me that my make-up was right. So when the make-up was done it’s not about going to chat to everyone, or going over to catering… that’s actually when you start work, being there and being really supportive. I became a different type of Make-up Artist after being in front of the camera.

Well, they were just different things that came back then. The thing is… the more famous you become, the more scared people are to book you. So you lose all your bread & butter money jobs. When you are unknown, people are happy to book you because you are just the Make-up Artist. When you’ve worked on an award winning film, they then book you and think that you are judging them… that you are judging them as a director… so only other awardwinning directors will book you because ordinary directors feel intimidated by you. So at first you think ‘Great I’ve won an award!’ and then suddenly your bookings get quiet…until people forget.

It’s amazing that what you considered to be big jobs, came to you early in your career and now you are doing all the cool stuff that you would have loved to do back then!

When I was on television with the ads my work slowed down because people were scared to book me! Also, as well as feeling judged, people think, ‘Oh, she’ll be too busy, she’s famous now, she won’t want to work with us’. So all of your regular clients get scared and they use your assistants, who you’ve trained up instead. What is it that you love about being a Make-up Artist?

There are lots of aspects that make it good. One of them, the most fabulous thing, is the time off you get. There is no other job that I know of where sometimes you’ll work days, sometimes you’ll work nights, sometimes you’ll work a full week and sometimes you’ll only work two days in a week… even just one day in a week… but then when you are working, it’s so full on that you will end up doing more hours than other people do in a week. My job would be perfect if they started at a reasonable, healthy time and finished at a reasonable healthy time. But unfortunately, every job you get is always that little bit too long and always starts that little bit too early. If you could cut the edges and make it an eight-hour day instead of 14 or 16, I would say it would be the perfect job! Tell me how, when and why you started your career in Make-up?

“When I was on television with the ads my work slowed down because people were scared to book me!”

I didn’t know it was a career move. I didn’t know it was a career! I moved to London and worked in a really trendy fashion boutique and in that trendy fashion boutique there were stylists that came in and borrowed the clothes, I thought that sounded fascinating. One of the stylists let me go out with her as her assistant and when I was watching her, I realized that the Make-up Artist was the best job of all. I then decided that’s what I wanted to do but didn’t know how and she suggested that if I then PA’d for the photographer I would learn

the trade. So I PA’d for a photographer and that confirmed to me that make-up is where I wanted to be but I had no idea if I’d be any good at it, I had no idea what would happen… and it just so happened I was good at it. I guess you must have been creative and artistic though from the beginning? What I had was vision. I was obsessed with fashion pictures, I was very aware of fashion. I dressed trendy, I was trendy, I recognised trendy, I predicted trend. I knew what I wanted to see, I knew what magazines got it right, I knew which ones got it wrong, I just had vision, I just knew where it should go. You can be really talented but if you don’t know what to do, you’re still on base one! What was your aim back then, did you ever visualize being so successful? No, not at all! I said to myself, the day you work for the VOGUE will be the day you have succeeded what you are here for and within the first week of getting an agent, they had me working on VOGUE, Tatler and Harper’s. I was working with Norman Parkingson and Antony Snowden and I had to say to myself, alright, you’ve got to work for them a hundred times before you give in, because I’d basically made my goal within my first week of having my first agent! It’s easier to work with anyone once. It’s when you get a call back that means you’re a good Make-up Artist. Now it seems like everyone wants to be a Make-up Artist… Well you say that but there are much more publications now, much more areas where Make-up Artists are used and more people are using Make-up Artists. Celebs are using Make-up Artists, in the early days they didn’t. Also in the very early days before I started,

in the 60’s and 70’s, models used to do their own make-up and hair. They used to have to take three wigs with them in order to look different, not knowing what was needed. Who inspires you personally now? THE WORLD! I used to be inspired by Linda Cantello, Yvonne Gold but Yvonne retired at an early age and Linda Cantello moved to Paris but if ever I saw a magazine story that made me ‘GASP’ as it’s taken my breath away, I would read the credits and it was always one of those two girls. How did it feel to win the Best International Make-up Artist Award for your work on The English Patient? [LAUGHS] It felt funny! Well, it was great, it was fantastic but as the award was being given out in

Film bug wasn’t for me. I’m a bit of a home bird, I like to be [at home] and also realised it’s where your friends are and The English Patient was six and a half months away from home and away from my friends… and what’s really shocking is that it doesn’t take long for your friends to replace you! So even when you come back after all that time away, there’s no room for you in their lives anymore, cause they’ve replaced you with someone else. I’m sure it would be different now as there is Skype, emails etc. Back then it was just call boxes, so it was the difficulty of making a phone call and it being so expensive that made it difficult to keep in touch. I don’t want to be controlled by a film company by them telling me I’ve got to do this and that. I want to choose where I’m going

NOIR b ea u t y

“I just had vision, I just knew where it should go.” Italy, I was flown to Bologna to do it. The whole thing was just so fantastic! Eating beautiful food but not understanding a word that was said at the awards ceremony! Just suddenly being pushed up and realising it was my turn to go curtsey and say thank-you… but it was all in Italian so it was very difficult.

myself and even though with my work now, I can’t control what happens or where I’m going but it’s only for two to three days, a week at the most. You have to be that sort of person who enjoys giving up his or her life for someone else’s whim and I wasn’t prepared to do that.

Did it feel like a real achievement?

What main advice would you give to Make-up Artists looking to break into the industry?

No, it just felt like me and that they hadn’t really looked at the other people around. I think you are always just yourself aren’t you. So I didn’t think I deserved it… I thought I deserved it for standing six and a half months on a set doing the job! I think everyone deserves a bloody medal for that! You have only worked on two big feature films, Damage and The English Patient, despite your huge success. Tell me the reasons why you didn’t get the film bug and continue along this path?

Say YES to everything! You don’t have any idea where your career is going to lead and you don’t know if you are going to like films, until you’ve done films. You’re not going to know if you like pop or TV, you might like the camaraderie, you might prefer the one to one but you don’t really know if it’s going to like you! You might decide you really want to do editorial but if editorial doesn’t like you, then you’re fucked!

119

NOIR bea u ty For me, my ethics were; I had to earn a living, so it wasn’t about sticking out and only doing what I wanted, it was about making a living. So whatever came my way, I did. So I was just lucky… I don’t know, you see, every job you do, even if it’s a rubbish one, it leads to another job. It leads to meeting someone who says ‘Oh, I worked with this Make-up Artist the other day’. Everything you do leads forward. So if you say ‘No, I don’t want to do that because I want to do editorial’, you’ve just blocked off a whole branch that might have taken you back to editorial but you won’t know quite how it’s blocked you. So I’d say you should just take everything that comes your way.

My favourite face ever, ever, EVER… and it’s not particularly their face, it’s people I like… Julie Andrews was the most wonderful, amazing person in the world! She is Mary Poppins, she is Maria Von Trapp, she is every part she has ever played and she was just wonderful to be with… and scrubs up well too! [Laughs]. She was just absolutely amazing! Tina Turner is amazing; Tina has got something so special about her that you feel honored to be in her company. Then there’s Kristen [Kristen Scott Thomas] and we have a very similar humour, so we became very good friends on set of The English Patient. I mean sometimes you can work Louise with Tina Turner.

Image: UNIVERSAL RECORDS

You have waved your magic wands over many famous faces. Who have been your favorite faces and why?

NOIR b ea u t y alongside an actress for MONTHS and they will NEVER get your humour… that makes for a very dull job. You are responsible for most of Sophie Ellis Bextor’s iconic looks, like the glittery green eye shadow in the “Murder on the dance floor” video, which I have copied on numerous nights out! When on a job like that, do you have any idea of the impact it will have? No, not at all. I had no idea what make-up we were going to do at the time, I mean it was purely done. I had one idea and the director wanted glitter and I was too busy going ‘Glitters gone,

Queens! It’s like the equivalent of Smith! Cheerleaders’ teams named Beauty Queen… millions of things but we’d already marketed it as Beauty Queen. I should have just used Louise Constad [laughs], that would have been far more sensible. What was your motivation for starting ‘Louise Constad’s Beauty Queen Workshops’ and what was your aim? Ok, I was bored of booking assistants who were absolutely crap! So I thought if I opened a school I could teach people what’s really needed. It’s these long schools where the girls come

“Julie Andrews was the most wonderful, amazing person in the world! She is Mary Poppins, she is Maria Von Trapp, she is every part she has ever played and she was just wonderful to be with… that’s so last month glitter, we want to move forward’, and the director said, ‘I want glitter’. So I chose a green glitter to make it look different. I had no idea that it would be so successful and it was! And that was fantastic, watching yourself on a whim just changing the make-up. Where did your nickname ‘Beauty Queen’ come from? It came from my friend Stephanie. My friend Stephanie started my career back in 1979 by getting me a job working for a fashion photographer, who’s the second photographer I PA’d for. He was a magazine photographer, so she got me that and later when I was opening my Make-up school, she said ‘There’s only one name you can call your school and it’s Beauty Queen’. So that’s how it came about and I totally trust her way. Although later when we we’re buying the domain name, I realised it was the worst name we could have chosen because there are just 20 trillion Beauty

out and they take 50 hours to do make-up because they’ve learned to do everything to fill an afternoons lesson and they chat and talk… so they are actually crap when it comes to working on the floor, in the field. You know, I’d say ‘Can you do the nails’ a while later… ‘Have you finished the nails’… ‘I mean NOW!’ They just didn’t get it! So I ended up training people up to what I thought the industry really needed. What workshop/courses do you offer, is it just for aspiring Make-up Artists? I offer ‘one to ones’ for people who want to learn how to do make-up on themselves. Then I do a 2 day course for people who just want to learn make-up for things such as a wedding, maybe just learn how to apply to others to sell make-up, such as an Avon representative, just so they know how to apply it. Then I do a 5 day course which is an extensive, intensive course of

121

NOIR bea u ty how to be a Make-up Artist. And considering I only had two, half hour lessons and decided I was a Make-up Artist, I think a week is plenty of time to learn everything. Having spent time with you on your course, I can honestly say that the education, business savvy and benefit of hindsight that you give your students is like gold dust. Why do you feel this kind of insight is so important to aspiring Make-up Artists? I took years building my career but I took years of getting it wrong. I took years of having an opinion that I didn’t realize at the time was setting me back and I teach people how to not make mistakes. How to get through everything, how NOT to do it wrong. You have your own range of bags and brushes that you have personally designed, what are the benefits of using these products? Well my bags I’ve invented, I’ve had them made so they are light. They are made of cooler bag fabric. Lot’s of Make-up Artists have these big trolley bags that Louise Constad Brushes available from: beautyqueenworkshops.com

Cooler Bag - £37.50 beautyqueenworkshops.com

Cooler Bag Lids (separately) - £5 Medium 1/4 Inner Bag - £23.50

Small 1/8 Inner Bag £17.50

are heavy even when empty, mine weighs nothing, so no excess luggage if you travel, plus you’ve got them on your shoulder. If you can get your make-up fitted in these they are light as a feather and you can easily catch the tube. My bags make you mobile. With my brushes I’ve cut out the middleman, there is no mark up on them, so therefore they are affordable. If you lose one, someone takes one or you give it to someone it doesn’t matter, you can just buy another one. For a lipbrush its only £7, it’s nothing! An eyebrow brush is a fiver… so if you drop it, lose it, it’s really no great shakes whereas if you buy them from the expensive shops, it’s the end of the world if you lose one, it really is. If you had to pick one, which would be your favourite Louise Constad product and why? I think the large inner bags and the main bag because they have see through tops so you can see everything and you can easily show them at the airport. The foundation brush is fantastic, the concealer brush is fantastic, the eyeliner brush is fantastic… oh and the lipbrush is amazing. How do you feel busy women, can instantly make the best of themselves?

122

Any women can make the best of themselves; it’s about wanting to. What’s really interesting is that it’s normally ugly girls who are good with make-up and it’s the

beautiful girls who come to see me at 40 because they don’t know how to put on make-up because they have never had to rely on it before. If you’re a natural beauty, you don’t really need it! So quite often it’s the girls who never needed it in the past. What is your most hated beauty crime? Fake Tans. Spray tans, any form of tangoed tans. They always look patchy, they might look fabulous on day one but by day 2 they look patchy, orange, they look ridiculous. And also, what’s wrong with being the colour you are? What recent projects have you been working on that we should look out for? Well there are so many things that will go in my blog but of course I can’t say until I’m allowed to so… I recently did a Company magazine shoot with the girls from The Only Way Is Essex, that was pretty brilliant. I mean from watching the show to actually meeting them. My job was to change their make-up and make them look NOT from Essex but it was actually pretty difficult because as I tried to remove their make-up it stayed on! Their eyebrows were tattooed on, their lip liner was tattooed, their eyeliner was tattooed and their eyelashes, even though obvious strip lashes were stuck on with permanent glue. So in fact, I couldn’t change them because it was all stuck on.

NOIR bea u ty What are your personal top 3 beauty/Make-up tips? 1) Adding moisturizer into your foundation after you’ve done your make-up. That’s what I do for everyone over a particular age. I put on foundation and then pat moisturizer into it. It really makes the skin look young and it breaks down that block look that make-up gives. 2) Adding lashes in but not too many that they look ridiculous. 3) In real life I like long lasting lipsticks but for work and for TV and films you can’t use those. You can of course use them if you are a real person however.

MAYBELLINE Dream Touch Blush Louise says: This cream texture glides smoothly on the skin with a nice even finish. The nude colour is a great shade for an effortless look whether it be going to work or drinks with friends. A must have ladies! The fact it also smells of lush watermelon adds a point. Rating: 4/5

NARS Eyeshadow Duo (in Dogon) Leanne says: Comes in the iconic NARS compact packaging with mirror. Love the shades – the silver/grey on its own is amazing. Coupled with the charcoal shade and you have a smoky eye to rival Kate Moss. Rating: 5/5

ESTEE LAUDER BG Sea Star Bronzing Blush Leanne says: Everything about this product is divine; the packaging, the bronzer (a light bronzer with a sea star shaped pink blush in the middle) and the results – summer kissed, glowing, shimmering cheeks. Apply to hairline and collarbone also. Rating: 5/5

SMASHBOX Artificial Light Luminizing Lotion Leanne says: It’s great mixed with lotion for an all-over glow but I preferred using a little on my cheeks, brow bones and decollage for an extra catwalk-worthy healthy glow. Rating: 4/5 PAUL & JOE Creamy Powder Compact Foundation Leanne says: Points for the SPF15: making it perfect for a summer foundation. Once again Paul & Joe don’t let us down with their packaging; a blush pink, flower engraved compact which opens up to reveal a dainty mirror to help apply the product – perfect for touch-ups. And that really is where the praise ends. I would not recommend this for dry skin types like myself as it clung to all my dry areas and was patchy. This made for a big disappointment. Rating 1/5

The colours look great as does the packaging however it does not apply well and the glitter of the silver eyeshadow goes everywhere when you apply it. Rating: 1/5 ESTEE LAUDER BG Island Oasis ES Palette Leanne says: Finally an eyeshadow palette which I love! I’m always wary of eyeshadow: paired with my fair skin it can sometimes make me look like an evil clown, but these six shades actually worked really well. In shades of copper, bronze, gold, coral, silver and turquoise, I was left with ultra glam eyes. A must-buy! Rating 5/5 THE BODY SHOP Dreams Unlimited, Eau De Toilette Louise says: New summer range for the Body Shop comes in a beautiful teardrop shaped bottle and reasonably priced to boot. I did feel the scent was a tad overpowering and could not wear it all day. Rating 2/5

LUSH Angels On Bare Skin Cleanser Louise says: Used to improve the texture and health of all skin types, this cleanser smoothes and tones. Mix a small piece of cleanser with warm water and apply to face, simple as that. Although my skin was soft after using, I found the product messy to use and the smell rather unpleasant. Rating 2/5

MAYBELLINE Super Stay 24hr Foundation Joanne says: This foundation does as promised, it stays on all day. The only flaw I found was that you have to use quite a lot of it to to cover your face fully. Once applied however, the foundation looks great and there is no need to reapply. Rating: 4/5

THE BODY SHOP Coconut Body Lotion Leanne says: This body lotion is fabulous. As soon as you apply it you feel as though you are lying on a beach in Bali. It is not one for those who hate glitter as it is rather full on shimmering glitter (which I loved). Loved, loved, loved. Rating: 4/5 DR ORGANIC BIOACTIVE SKINCARE Royal Jelly Cellulite Cream Joanne says: I am not a massive fan of the smell of this cream however after a few days of applying I did feel the benefits of using it. LET ’ S G ET F I T FOR SU MM E R ! By GILDA ORRU

T

he first sun came out a little earlier this year. I put away coats and cashmere cardis, happily thinking about how cool we will look in our summer dresses. But here it comes: the sudden realisation that that

130

skirt or that dress doesn’t fit anymore… Reflective moment: did I go over-board on the berry muffins? Did I forget the way to the local gym? Is my body no longer a temple, but a snack-bar? Is that hour of yoga that I am trying to do “to take

it easy at the beginning” ever so painful? Oh yes, it is time to get fit for the summer. Determined not to take a trip to self-pity and depression, first of all I tell myself that it’s only a few bits I have to drop in order to get my size to fit comfortably. I want to have the pleasure of lifting up the zip of my summer dress without holding my breath or calling the neighbours for help. So if you feel the same way, follow the steps I am taking towards a healthier life and a fitter body.

Set a Goal If you haven’t exercised for a while, it is important to have a will-power boost, something that will make you feel challenged. For my fitness boost, I chose to participate in a 10k race for life against breast cancer in July. And I am doing it with a couple of girlfriends, which always helps you keep your motivation strong. Remember, marathons and races are not just for pros. Whether you decide to go for a short run, a half marathon, a marathon or a simple walk, these are very friendly approaches to a healthier life. Most of these events are charity based, which adds on a selfless deed, as well as a whole lot of love that you are giving to your body by training for them. There is a vast choice of locations you can choose from. Just to mention a few: the Race for Life organised by Tesco and Cancer Research UK offers opportunities all over the UK to run 10k and 5k runs during the whole summer. Although it’s a bit late for the Virg in London marathon, you can still get into the other events that Virgin organises which you can enter with a Charity purpose. For example, the Virgin Half Marathon is a great way of keep fit and, incase you are braving it for next year, prepare for the London

Marathon 2012. Another popular option is to walk the Edinburgh Moon Walk. A very beautiful summer night walk organised by the Walk the Walk against Breast Cancer. They also organise a half marathon in Glasgow and other runs all over Europe. Nike also offers various marathons events for women, which are great if you have a group of fitness buddies to go with. It’s a challenge, a travelling adventure (as most Nike marathons are based in the US) and a charity to raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society. All the websites for these events have downloadable PDF files where you can find the suggested training program for every level of fitness. You’ll be spoiled for choice!

Get that bum to the gym Setting a goal is important, but it is also important to have the right guidance throughout the training. For me a simple six weeks training programme was not enough, as I decided to start getting fit longer before the race. Everyone works and everyone is tired. Look around you, there are many women sitting next to you on

the train to work with their gym kits packed in a rucksack. If they can do it, you can do it. You just have to decide what part of the day you are keener to spend for exercise and where. If you are an early bird, the best option is to pack your work suit and leave home early in order to have a good session at the gym and still have the time to get ready for a new day. Working out releases endorphins: feel-good substances that reduce pain and stress. So don’t think that you’ll be too tired to face the day, you’ll start off in a great mood instead! If rising with the sun is not your thing, exercise is a great way to relax and forget about decision making stress. Aim at an evening work out when you know that you will still have a good two hours of time between your meal and your bed time. In most gyms, it is easy to find a great variety of classes: from yoga to zumba to kick boxing, it is easy to find the exercises that suit you best. But most of all, at the gym a personal trainer will suggest a programme according to your goals, your weight and your experience.Agood combination of twenty minutes cardio exercise, a few weights to tone up and a couple of abs focused exercise is a start that will give you visible results within four weeks - I promise! But don’t be lazy; remember every week to increase the level of your exercise: e.g. run a bit faster, pull a few kilos more, or add some weights to those painful lunges, and don’t be afraid of doing a couple more crunches on the Swiss ball! Also, many people forget, you can make a new appointment with a personal trainer after six weeks, to work on new aims, the new resistance you acquired and a new workout, in order to keep your interest high and your consistency level. We all work better when we know that someone will test us.

Watch your food Food is a very important part of my lifestyle and as long as I am sure that what I eat is genuine, well cooked and not particularly high in fat, I never regret it. This good-food guilt is not a phrase in my vocabulary. The downside is I never

131

NOIR ad vice believe that my extra bits and the half size coming out of my muffin top is related to what I eat. And I am wrong there! Even though I am against diets, I believe that we should keep aware of nutrition in order to know what our body is absorbing when we eat. But we should not punish our body by sacrificing all pleasures that come from food. Food is in fact a great way to lose that bit of extra weight. You only have to discover more about it, getting to know different kind of foods and the way to keep a balance even when eating out. To do this, a book that helps me a lot is The Food Doctor Everyday Diet Cookbook by Ian Marber. The Food Doctor seven days detox diet was a bit too aggressive for me, but the recipes were absolutely scrumptious. So I decided to keep the introductory book and to buy the cookbook. The Food Doctor plan for life is very appropriate for people who are not prepared to give up any food. The philosophy presented in this book is divided into ten principles. Here they are in a nut shell. 1/ Eat protein with complexcarbohydrates. Marber presents very handy charts of foods divided into proteins and carbs. These are classified at preferred, good and adequate, promoting an awareness of choice. You won’t mind oatcakes and rye bread if you know that you can indulge in a bowl of pasta sometimes. 2/ Stay hydrated. Drinking water is essential to get and stay fit: and no, coffees and teas do not count! 3/ Eat a wide variety of food. This is fun part of the book and – if you feel brave- of the diet. Thanks to this book I discovered quinoa, a great variety of seeds; I made my own hummus and my own pesto. Variety is great, especially when you love it all! 4/ Fuel up frequently. The secret of losing weight and keeping the energy to exercise is in fact, my dear ladies, eat frequently but in small portions. I know this can create a lot of problems depending on the job you do, but trying doesn’t hurt. 5/ Eat breakfast. We all leave home in a rush in the morning. However, as

132

“Setting a GOAL is important, but it is ALSO IMPORTANT to have the right GUIDANCE throughout the TRAINING.” we have the time to run to Pret before head-ing to the office or the work place, we would as well have the time to eat some- thing at home. My solution is to use the kitchen area at work to store some cereal and muesli and have breakfast as soon as I get to work. 6/ Avoid sugar. This is not difficult if you don’t have a sweet tooth. Unfortunately, many of us do! The secret that the Food Doctor is trying to teach us is: sugary food brings you cravings for sugar. Avoid sugar and you will need it less and less! 7/ Exercise 8/ Follow the 80:20 rule: If for the 80% of the time you follow the plan, you can save the 20% to treat yourself eating something that you normally wouldn’t. 9/ Make time to eat. Enjoy each mouthful of your food and you will feel fuller and satisfied.

10/ Know your fat! Only avoid saturated fat, all the rest is important for the normal function of our body. Vegetable oils are good for us: there is not just olive oil that can be used in your daily recipes: avocado oil is one of the best oils to be used for salads and sesame oil is great to pan fry meat!

Remember to relax With a busy schedule, it is often easy to lose control of some “you time”. Make sure you save 15 minutes for yourself: meditation, yoga or simply a few moments to dedicate to your thoughts while sipping an infusion will make you feel more focused and relaxed. And last, but not least, never forget to get your beauty sleep: a good night’s sleep will not only make you feel and look better, it is also believed to make you live longer!

C E L E B B E AU T Y S E C R E T S: A n n a b e l l e Wa l l i s Interview By LAURA SMITH, Photographer ERIK IAN

L

uscious, long blonde hair, rosy cheeks, clear and natural complexion and soft blue eyes – ah if only we could look like Annabelle Wallis! The enviably beautiful English actress is best known for her role as Jane Seymour in The Tudors and we’ll soon see her in Madonna’s upcoming W.E. and alongside Christina Ricci in Pan Am. We asked Annabelle to share her secrets to looking naturally gorgeous, her can’t-live-without products and why beauty comes from within.

The best beauty advice I’ve I couldn’t live without ever received is less is more, mascara! I’m a blonde so I have and don’t pluck your eyebrows.

no eyelashes without it!

My beauty regime: I hate The best beauty product ever to travel with too many invented has to be YSL Touch products and I cannot do the routine of toners and cleansers, so I wash my face with Neal’s Yard London Face Wash and moisturize with Doctor Hauschka’s Rose Day Cream - I’m quite a low maintenance woman! I also love Neal’s Yard Rose Day Balm as it can be used both as a night cream and in the bath as a mask; it comes with a muslin cloth so that you can lay back in the bath with the balm and the cloth keeping in the heat and moisture.

Éclat! It’s a godsend for anyone as nomadic as I am. You can get off a flight and head straight to dinner looking fresh as a daisy with lashings of the stuff, and I love that it’s so compact; it fits perfectly in a little make-up bag.

My top beauty tips are try to use organic products that are as natural and untouched as possible, drink lots of water and allow yourself to live – enjoy life and it will show!

My favourite skin care My favourite look: I am all products are anything from for the natural look but as a Neal’s Yard London and Dr. Hauschka. I love any Ayurvedic Indian products that are homeopathic-based.

Red carpet beauty: It takes a while to figure out what make-up looks good on the red carpet – I like to play up the eyes and keep the rest simple.

woman you can’t help but feel so lucky to be able to play with make-up and beauty products. My make-up depends on my mood. My style is a little late-seventies/ rock-n-roll (whatever that means!) so I love to play on the vampish and smouldering at night, leaving the innocence of my natural day look behind!

Essential items in my make-up bag are YSL Mascara, Laura The oddest thing I’ve tried in Mercier Bronzer, Nars blush stick the name of beauty is flat beer and eyeliner, Max Factor lip stain and Nars or Shiseido concealer.

and egg yolk for shiny hair – they use it in India and it works!

I think women are under pressure to look a certain way because we live in such a visually based society. Social media, magazines, internet, television, movies; they all exaggerate and enhance in order to attract a larger audience. With Photoshop and airbrushing, everyday people are made out to look like supermodels. It’s an unfair pressure because it’s in no way real, yet sold as a truth to young girls who then aspire to be like something that doesn’t exist.

I don’t think beauty can be bought because it comes from your spirit.

To me beauty is to be fully comfortable in your own skin. To know and love yourself, to laugh and be a joy to be around is true beauty.

“I’m not afraid to admit I love make-up. Thick, theatrical, drag queen make-up!”

Do you feel pressure to look a certain way as an actress? I think my standing goal is to look like the character I’m playing. I’ve played teenagers and pregnant women and drug addicts and now I’m playing a very put together business woman. All of those characters have different body types. Right now, my character is a bit of a control freak, so having toned arms to make her look more meticulous is my gimmick.

How has your beauty routine changed over the years? I have way more grey hair than a woman my age should. One day I’ll go pure silver. But until then, I’m dumping as many chemicals as I can on my head!

Most women have days when they wake up and just don’t feel attractive. Does this ever Interview By LEANNE MILLIGAN happen to you?

Of course! But here’s the deal……. Men can’t tell the difference. They don’t know when your hair is dirty, or notice when you acquire a new wrinkle. They are the most wonderfully oblivious creatures on the planet and I adore them.

M

ost of you will remember Hilarie Burton as Peyton Sawyer from hit CW show One Tree Hill. Hilarie has also starred in films such as Normal Adolescent Behavior, Provinces of Night, Secret Life of Bees and is currently playing Sara Ellis in the US show White Collar. Here she chats to NOIR about her beauty routine. Who is your beauty icon What is your usual beauty routine? I use Dove bar soap for sensitive skin. I’ve tried every other system on the planet, from drug store stuff to $800 cleansing kits. Nothing works better than a simple bar of Dove Soap and a little moisturizer.

What are the keys to feeling confident and beautiful? Having a life! When you’re bored, you feel dull and ugly. So I’m always trying to keep myself busy, whether it’s doing manual labor in the yard or writing paper mail to my various pen pals.

How do you keep yourself in such great shape?

48 142

I think being an active parent is the best exercise on the planet. But I also indulge in much needed “me-time” by taking the occasional class at BarMethod. Dancers have such amazing bodies. And while I can’t dance at all, I still want a dancer butt!

Are you careful with what you eat? Not really. But I don’t like the American idea of “cleaning your plate” and eating three big meals a day. Meals have always been more of a social event for me, so I go all out when I’m cooking for my family or going out to dinner. But when I’m alone, I graze on bread and cheese and meat.

and why?

My mother. She had 4 kids under the age of 6 when she was my age, and I’m sure she was worn out by our rowdy pack. But all I remember is her doing her hair and make-up before my dad would come home from work, and how glamorous she was with her hair curled by hot rollers and her deep pink lipstick. She has the most exceptional bone structure, and I pray every night that I age as well as she has.

What is the best beauty advice you have ever been given? Water. Sometimes I feel like a human plant, trying to keep myselfwatered. But it really is the key factor in whether I wake up

looking grim or passable.

Can you share some of your own top beauty tips? Stop drinking! I used to have wine with dinner every night. Nothing outrageous. But even a little really affects you! When I stopped, I lost that baby fat bloat I had in my face and that little pouch in my stomach. I slept better and woke up and felt clean. I have an occasional glass on rare occasions, but I don’t really like the feeling of alcohol anymore. Too many cons, not enough pros.

Tell us what’s in your make-up bag? A lot! I’m not afraid to admit I love make-up. Thick, theatrical, drag queen make-up! Jane Iredale pressed powders are my greatest discovery, and Lashgasm mascara by Two Faced is a close second. Illuminare makes a foundation with amazing coverage and a dry finish so you don’t look like your face is gonna slip off.

Do you have a favourite fragrance/perfume? Fracas, by Robert Piguet. It’s dev-astating. And Gucci eau de Parfum if I really feel like getting in trouble.

Finish the sentence: beauty is…nice, but kindness is better. What are your plans for this year? Any projects you can tell us about? White Collar, playing Sara Ellis…….Bloodworth, playing Val Kilmer’s girlfriend Hazel… and spinning wheels with my production company, Southern Gothic Productions (sogopro.com)

enerally speaking, PR people fall into one of a few categories. There is the rare, sullen breed, who barely speak to the attendees of their event, and generally refuse any human contact. Find them glued to their iPhones while Alexa Chung struts past. I’ve never been quite sure if their behaviour is in fact an extension of the brand, and by acting like a teenage boy plagued with existential angst they are somehow conveying a deep statement about the forthcoming collections’ focus on “dark romance”, or if they are merely anti-social, but either way, it does them no favours. There is the overly peppy PR girl (it is a level of zeal unattainable by men) who will rush to pick up every garment at a press preview for you, or introduce you to so many people in the space of a minute you panic that you’re actually in a giant game of Who’s Who. Or as if you’re trying to cram Alexandra Shulman’s address book. On Red Bull. Sweet as they may be, these girls are hella exhausting. Then there is the well meaning but ultimately name forgetting, socially awkward type, who will meet you repeatedly, fail to fully place you, and suddenly ask personal questions. “So how much money do you make from x magazine?” “Exactly how many hits does y site get?” I nearly spat out my bite-size dim sum. Personally, I find these the most frustrating. If you’re not a people person, don’t throw yourself

headlong into a career that demands a good memory for faces and ability to elevate small talk into discussion. And don’t ask awkward questions. Of course, there are the real gems. The outgoing, bubbly ones, who have interesting information about the brand, who process call-in sheets quickly, and who make events so enjoyable that the brand shines brightly in your memory, even when the collection doesn’t. Programmes like The City have made too many people believe that PR is a career that you can excel in by being pretty and well-dressed. I’d say there’s an argument for public relations being one of the most demanding jobs in the game. You have to be a sales person, a negotiator, a networker, a project manager, a brand consultant, have a head for numbers….the list goes on and on. Oh yes, and you have to be able to deal with diva size fits at Fashion Week when an intern over subscribes the front row. I’ll never forget a girl I met working the reception at a well known designer shoe brand’s press preview. She took my coat and signed me in, but she had a look of complete exhaustion under her make up. “Are you alright?” I enquired, concerned by how pale she looked. “Yes…” she breathed “I’m- I’m only an intern! I’ve been here since six am!” I gave her a hug on the way out. To every guy and gal in the PR game, I take my hat off to you. I’m pretty sure us journalists can be unbearable sometimes.
